Gertrude Cobble Leinart
Retired TVA employee

Gertrude Cobble Leinart, 83, of Clinton, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Leinart was retired from the Norris operations of the Tennessee Valley Authority.

She was born in Greeneville on March 30, 1915, the daughter of Dellie Homer and Martha Lou Sinda Fox Cobble. She was a graduate of Cedar Creek Academy in Greene County.

Mrs. Leinart was a member of First Baptist Church of Clinton. She was also a member of the Timely Topics Club in Clinton and the Oak Ridge Area Christian Women's Club.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Roy L. "Pete" Leinart; four sisters-in-law, Lois Cobble of Carrollton, Ga., Dorothy Leinart of Powell, and Irene Fox and Lucille Hutchins and her husband, Jack, all of Clinton; and by several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at First Baptist Church of Clinton.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, at Leach cemetery in Lake City.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the church.

The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the church or charity of the donor's choice.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Clyde E. Hammons
Lake City resident

Clyde E. Hammons, 59, of Lake City, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Hammons is survived by his wife, Patsy Hammons; his son, Wayne Hammons of Ohio; three daughters, Theresa Hammons of Caryville, Vivian Smith of Ohio and Esta Hammons of Jacksboro; his brother, Clifton Hammons of Clinton; two sisters, Mary Lou Arthur and Mandy Smith, both of Clinton; and 12 grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, in the chapel of Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City. Burial will follow at Kesterson cemetery in Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, Sept. 30, at the funeral home.

Kenneth Puckett
Brother of Mable Guinn

Kenneth Puckett, 73, of Cookeville, died Saturday evening, Sept. 26, 1998, at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.

Mr. Puckett was the brother of Mable Guinn of Oak Ridge.

He was born Nov. 12, 1924, in Dekalb County, the son of Byrd and Frances Anderson Puckett, who are now deceased.

Mr. Puckett was retired from J & S Construction Co.

He was a member of Algood Church of Christ.

In addition to his sister, he is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ellen Williams Puckett; three daughters, Sandra Lemons of Tucson, Ariz., and Sarah Puckett and Susie Looper, both of Cookeville; and two sons, Kenny Puckett and his wife, Gertha, of Algood, and Jimmy Puckett and his wife, Mary, of Cookeville.

Mr. Puckett is also survived by nine grandchildren, Tullie Jones, Andrea Allen, Clint Looper, Rachael and Kellee Lemons, Amy, Kimberly, Lori Beth and Kenny Pat Puckett; and five great-grandchildren, Hannah Hipple, Avery and Devin Lewis and Sarah and Shae Jones.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Central Time Thursday, Oct. 1, in the Algood Chapel of Hooper & Huddleston Funeral Home, Algood. Ministers Jim Blankenship and Carl Wilmoth will officiate.

Burial will follow at Crest Lawn Memorial cemetery in Cookeville. Pallbearers will be Clyde Allen, Kenny Pat Puckett, Eric Vickers, Juan Chapman, Charlie Allen, John Ford, Bub Stockton and Leroy Jones. Honorary pallbearers are Bob Allen, Scotty Roberts and Vernon Morgan.

The family will receive friends after 4 this afternoon, Sept. 30, at the funeral home.

Barbara Tharpe Unger
Former medical technologist

Barbara LaVone Tharpe Unger, 68, of Oliver Springs, died at 4:35 this morning, Sept. 30, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Unger formerly lived in Oak Ridge, coming here in 1956 as a medical technologist with the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies. She left ORINS in 1960.

She was born in Hart County, Ky., on May 30, 1930, the daughter of Herbert and Callie Puckett Tharpe.

Mrs. Unger was a member of New York Avenue Church of Christ. She enjoyed quilting, her family said.

She is survived by her husband, Otto E. Unger; two daughters, Elaine Pierce and her husband, Mark Pierce, of New York, N.Y., and Janna White and her husband, James C. White, of Austin, Texas; a granddaughter, Marlena Elisabeth Pierce of New York City; three grandsons, Dakota James White, Tristan Garrett White and Colton Laramy White, all of Austin; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Unger's two brothers, W.T. Tharpe and Winfred Tharpe, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with ministers Harold Scott and Mike Allen officiating.

Burial will be at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.

Luetta Freels
Powell resident

Luetta Freels, 58, of Powell, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville.

Miss Freels was a resident of Powell. She was born in Anderson County on April 21, 1939, the daughter of Lillian Irene Freels of Powell and Herbert James Freels, now deceased.

She was a member of Spring Street Baptist Church in Powell.

In addition to her mother, Miss Freels is survived by a sister, Brenda Whitsell and her husband, David, of Heiskell; and five brothers, Roy Freels, Mickey Freels and Danny Freels, all of Powell, Larry Freels and his wife, Betty, of Andersonville, and Glenn Freels and his wife, Virginia, of Woodstock, Ga.

She is also survived by eight nieces, Debra, Cindy, Donna, Sherry, Glenda, Koti, Kati and Choyia; three nephews, Herbert Freels, David Freels and Glen Freels Jr.; and by nine grandnieces and grandnephews, Paul, Eric, Michael, Sherrie, Cheyenne, Savanna, Jessie and Austin.

The funeral will be at 8 tonight, Jan. 15, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Dexter Merritt officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Helen Virginia Burdette
First United Methodist member

Helen Virginia Bundrant Burdette, 75, of Lakeland, Fla., died Tuesday morning, Jan. 19, 1998, at her home. She had been incapacitated by a stroke 13 years ago.

Mrs. Burdette was a member of First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge.

She was born in Imboden, Va., on May 5, 1922, the daughter of Lena Bray Bundrant and Charles Andrew Bundrant.

Mrs. Burdette was a homemaker. She loved to read, garden and play bridge and golf. She and her husband moved frequently during his career, the family said.

Mrs. Burdette is survived by her husband of 52 years, Earl William Burdette; a daughter, Teresa Burdette Oberhausen of Lakeland; a son, Thomas Earl Burdette and his wife, Margaret Anderson Burdette, of Knoxville; a sister, Ruth Grogan of Appalachia, Va.; and two brothers, William E. Bundrant of Kingsport and James D. Bundrant of Big Stone Gap, Va.

She is also survived by a granddaughter, Mary Helen Dean and her husband, Kevin Dean; three grandsons, Clay William Oberhausen, Chad Thomas Oberhausen and Thomas Scott Burdette; and one great-great-granddaughter, Kayla Marie Dean.

In addition to her parents, a stepsister, Rosalie Bundrant Felts, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, in the chapel of McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home.

Burial will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at the funeral home.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Keystone Elder Day Care, in care of First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 4669, Oak Ridge, TN 37831.

Eula Hawkins
Lake City resident

Eula Hawkins, 85, of Lake City, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Hawkins is survived by four daughters, Mary Carden and her husband, Lee, and Lula Ann Poore, all of Lake City, Pauline Solomon and her husband, Ivan, of Mooresburg, and Linda Huckaby and her husband, Paul, of Claxton; and by three sisters, Magdalene Foust of Clinton, Cora Cox of Lake City and Jeannette Adkins of Caryville.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, in the chapel of Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City with the Rev. Kenneth Bean officiating. Burial will follow at Leach cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, Jan. 21, at the funeral home.

Mattie Cooper Lucas
Clinton Church of Christ member

Mattie Cooper Lucas, 77, of Clinton Towers, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mrs. Lucas was a member of Clinton Church of Christ. She enjoyed going to church and being with her family and friends, the family said.

She was born in Anderson County on July 18, 1920, the daughter of James and Eliza Cooper. She was the widow of the Rev. George W. Lucas.

Mrs. Lucas is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Lucas Martin of Clinton; two sons, George W. Lucas Jr. and his wife, Margaret, of Knoxville, and Darrell Edward Lucas and his wife, Lyn, of Halls; a sister, Mary Herrell of Claxton; a brother, Calvin Cooper of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and by nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 8:30 tonight, Jan. 21, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. David Pharr and the Rev. Charles Harness officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Pallbearers are the grandsons, Tony, Eddie and Kevin Martin, and Rickey, Jaycen and Nick Lucas.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

M.F. Phillips
Retired ORNL physicist

Morris Florin "M.F." Phillips, 85, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Phillips was a retired physicist from the Physics Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

He was a native of Rockwood and a member of First United Methodist Church. He had been active with Boy Scout Troop 223 of the church in the early 1960s.

Mr. Phillips is survived by two sons, Thomas M. Phillips and his wife, Dianne, of Madison, Fla., and Don L. Phillips and his wife, Angela, of Fairfax, Va.; one granddaughter, Stephanie Phillips of Fairfax; and two grandsons, Scott Phillips and Todd Phillips, both of Madison.

He is also survived by two brothers, Tom T. Phillips of Kingston and Morgan K. Phillips of Maryville.

His wife, Aileen Phillips, died earlier. The couple had been married 57 years at the time of her death.

A private graveside service was held at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 4669, Oak Ridge, TN 37831.

McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Shelby Jean Richards
Retired Kmart office manager

Shelby Jean Richards, 57, of Clinton, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Richards retired in October 1997 as office manager of the Oak Ridge Kmart, where she had worked for 19 years.

She was born in Blackwater, Va., on June 4, 1940. She enjoyed traveling. The family said she often went fishing with her husband even though she didn't like it, but went anyway because he liked it.

Mrs. Richards attended Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Ridge.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Paul G. Richards; two daughters, Anna Waldroup and her husband, Greg, and Paula Headrick and her husband, Greg, all of Clinton; four grandchildren, Kristin Headrick, Lauren Headrick, Bradley Ray and Deanna Waldroup, all of Clinton; and her mother and stepfather, Ruby and Vernard Rayfield, also of Clinton.

Mrs. Richards is also survived by two aunts she considered special, Berta Muncy of Clinton and Ruth Jones of Kingsport.

Hazel Campbell and Jewel Nuchols were special friends.

Her father, Floyd Johnson, a sister, Sylvia Johnson, and a brother, James Johnson, died earlier.

The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Steve McDonald and the Rev. Ronald Guthrie officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at McCarty-Woodhaven Memorial Garden in Claxton.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.
