Lucretia Cappiello Galloway
ORHS graduate, former nurse
Lucretia Cappiello Galloway, 45, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Galloway was born in Oak Ridge on Aug. 2, 1953. She was a 1971 graduate of Oak Ridge High School and attended the University of Tennessee. A licensed practical nurse, she graduated in 1974 from the practical nursing program at Oak Ridge hospital. She was last employed at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center.
She was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Mrs. Galloway is survived by her daughter, Capricia Angela Galloway of Oak Ridge; her mother, Norma June Miller Cappiello of Oak Ridge; two brothers, Robert Lee Remine and his wife, Rose, of Oak Ridge and Steve Cappiello and his wife, Rosa, of Homestead, Fla.; and her sister, Tina Marie Johnston and her husband, Timothy, of Oak Ridge.
Mrs. Galloway is also survived by several nieces and nephews, Christy Zanoni of Knoxville, Rocky Remine and Matthew Johnston, both of Oak Ridge, and Steve Cappiello, Beth Cappiello and Jennifer Cappiello, all of Homestead; and by several aunts and uncles she considered special.
Her father, Michael J. Cappiello, died in 1981.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. David Hall officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, Sept. 1, at Weatherford Mortuary.
Elsie Lee Higgins
Trinity Methodist member
Elsie Lee Shubert Higgins of Oak Ridge died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mrs. Higgins was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
She was born in Loudon, the daughter of Joe and Lula Ricker Shubert.
Mrs. Higgins enjoyed playing bridge, bowling, going to flea markets, playing bingo, and vegetable gardening, her family said.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Ted S. Higgins; two daughters, Barbara Kay Perry and her husband, Ron, and Patricia Lynn Higgins, all of Oak Ridge; and two grandchildren, Marlee K. Malone and Matthew B. Malone.
Jean Perry, Marg Stevenson and Rosalie Cross were considered special friends.
The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Michael Johnson officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
Ola May Hunter
Native of Devonia
Ola May Hunter, 89, of Oliver Springs, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mrs. Hunter was born in Devonia on Feb. 22, 1909, the daughter of Adam and Sylvania Patterson Daugherty.
She had lived in the Oliver Springs area for the past 35 years and was the widow of Howard Hunter. She was a Baptist.
Mrs. Hunter is survived by five children, Zola Keathley, Earl Foster and Adam Foster, all of Coalfield, Barbara West of Oliver Springs and John Foster and his wife, Daphene, of Devonia; and by 41 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Three other children, James William Patterson, Verdie Foster and Dola Foster, died earlier, as did two sisters, Leota Daugherty and Zola Daugherty, and her parents.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Shiloh Baptist Church in New River with the Rev. Don Daugherty officiating.
Burial will follow at the Brey cemetery in New River.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, Sept. 1, at Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs.
Janice Demarest Staley
Avid gardener, musician
Janice Demarest Staley of Oak Ridge, formerly of Tampa, Fla., and Maryville, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mrs. Staley was an avid gardener and an accomplished musician, her family said. She was a member of the DeSoto Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and she was a Methodist.
She was the daughter of Eva H. and Garrett Z. Demarest, who are now deceased. She was the widow of Joseph Henry Staley.
Mrs. Staley is survived by two daughters, Deborah D. Trostle and her husband, Jeffrey Trostle, of Tallahassee, Fla., and Janice Dee Cole and her husband, William Cliff Cole, of Harriman; her twin sister, Joyce D. Saunders of San Antonio, Texas; and her brother, Garrett Demarest and his wife, Ruth, of San Orego, Calif.
She is also survived by several grandchildren, Cliff and Colleen Cole, Clay and Seleena Cole, Andrew Trostle and Jennifer Trostle; and two great-grandchildren, Zach Cole and Whitley Cole.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at Tennessee Veterans cemetery with the Rev. Gail Brown officiating.

Claude James Cumbie Sr.
Retired Y-12 Plant machinist
Claude James Cumbie Sr., 80, of Ten Mile, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Cumbie was a former resident of Oak Ridge who retired in 1979 from Union Carbide Nuclear Division. He had worked as a machinist at the Y-12 Plant.
He was born in Greenville, Ala., on March 20, 1918, the son of Henry Herbert Cumbie and Minnie Mabel Reeves Cumbie.
Mr. Cumbie's hobby was restoring old cars, the family said.
He was a Baptist.
He is survived by two sons, Buddy Cumbie and his wife, Debra, of Jefferson City, and Claude Cumbie Jr., and his wife, Kym, of Kingston; his brother, Robert Cumbie of Greenville, Ala.; a granddaughter, Jennifer Cumbie; four grandsons, Steven Cumbie, Jimmy Alexander, Sam Alexander and Andy Alexander; and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service was held Sunday, Sept. 6, at McCarty-Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton with the Rev. Clay Mulford officiating.
The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the American Cancer Society, Anderson County Unit, in care of Lee Costanzo, 103 Case Lane, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Virginia Madeline Key

Virginia Madeline Key, 81, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Key was a member of Robertsville Baptist Church.
She was a homemaker and the widow of Clifford E. Key, who died Nov. 27, 1993.
Born Feb. 27, 1917, in Dickerson County, Va., she was the daughter of James Monroe Smith and Sarah Holbrook Smith.
Mrs. Key is survived by her daughter, Sarah Faye Key of Oak Ridge; two brothers, James Lee Smith of Festus, Mo., and Sam I. Smith of Savannah, Ga.; three sisters, Dorothy S. Talley of Kingsport, Paula Inskeep of Cawker City, Kan., and Betty Jane Bowman of Johnson City; and by several nieces and nephews.
Two children she considered special are Bryan and Dana Lynn.
The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Michael Prince officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.

Jennie M. Martin, 86, of Clinton, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, at her home.
Mrs. Martin was a member of Pine Ridge Baptist Church in Clinton. Her family said she loved her church and attended every time she could.
She was born in Anderson County on April 16, 1912, the daughter of Ed and Myrtle Leinart Martin. She was the widow of Fletcher Martin.
Mrs. Martin is survived by two sons, Conda Martin and his wife, Jane, of Dyer, Ind., and Tom Martin and his wife, Hettie, of Clinton; and five daughters, Mayzie Tucker and her husband, Wendell, of Hammond, Ind., Reba Lowe and Willis Hall of Kingston, Myrtle Smith and her husband, Bill, and Viola Phillips, all of Clinton, and Harriett Massengill and her husband, Ronnie, of Morristown.
She is also survived by three sisters, Mae Foust of Clinton, Lillian Simpson of Spring City and Pearl Woods of Oliver Springs; five brothers, John L. Martin of Detroit, Mich., Earl Martin of Jacksboro, Lonas Martin of Clinton, and Howard Martin and Jim Martin, both of Hammond, Ind.; and by 25 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Two sisters and two brothers, Edna Martin, Alice Martin, Charles Martin and Clayton Martin, died earlier.
The funeral was held at 11 this morning, Sept. 7, at Pine Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Clifford Fraker and the Rev. Verlin Langford officiating.
Burial followed at Blowing Springs cemetery.

Kenneth E. Alexander

Kenneth E. Alexander, 58, of Sevierville, died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at his home.
He was the son of Mildred Alexander of Oak Ridge. His father, Gentry Alexander, is deceased.
Mr. Alexander was a member of First Baptist Church of Pigeon Forge. He was employed at The Track in Pigeon Forge.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Christy Butt of Maryville; a son, Michael Alexander of Sevierville; three sisters, Betty Hopson, Mavis Stanley and Judy Alexander; a brother, Jimmy Alexander; two stepchildren, Donna Marmolejo and Danny Jeffers; and three step-grandchildren, Jenny, Kelly and Mason.
Mary Alexander was his former wife.
The funeral was held Sunday, March 8, in the chapel of McCarty Woodhaven Funeral Home in Claxton with the Rev. Wayne Cook officiating.
Burial followed at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens.
Edwin Harness
Oliver Springs carpenter
Edwin Harness, 51, of Oliver Springs, died Friday, March 6, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Harness was a carpenter.
He was born in Anderson County on Oct. 14, 1946, the son of John and Della Harness, both now deceased. He was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church of Briceville.
Mr. Harness is survived by his wife, Wanda Patterson Harness; two sons, Roy E. Harness and his wife, Sandra, of Dutch Valley, and Norris Harness and his wife, Anna, of Oliver Springs; six brothers, Kenneth Harness and W.C. Harness and his wife, Janie, all of Briceville, and the Rev. John Harness and his wife, May, Randy Harness and his wife, Nancey, Neil Harness and his wife, Cledia, and Mac Harness and his wife, Cindy, all of Oliver Springs.
He is also survived by four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Ernest Neal of Oliver Springs was considered a special friend.
A sister, Jerry Mullins, died earlier.
The funeral was held Sunday, March 8, at Laurel Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Sheldon officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.
