Nellon D. Fox
Lake City resident

Nellon D. Fox, 92, of Lake City, died Sunday, July 26, 1998, at Lake City Health Care Center.

Mrs. Fox is survived by a daughter, Marinetha White of Lake City; and two sons, Bobby Fox and James Willie Fox, both of Lake City.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, in the chapel of Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City with the Rev. T.D. Hooker and the Rev. Jeff Calloway officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 29, at McCarty Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Claxton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Bertis Everet Capehart
Former OR schools superintendent

Bertis Everet Capehart, 84, of Lakewood, N.J., died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at Harrogate Life Care Center in Lakewood.

Mr. Capehart attracted national attention in 1955 while serving as superintendent of Oak Ridge schools when the city schools were among the first in the nation to become desegregated. Prior to that time, he had served for 20 years as a teacher and counselor and in various administrative positions in the public schools in Indiana, Illinois and Ohio.

He was born in Shawneetown, Ill., in 1913. Mr. Capehart received a bachelor's degree in 1935 from DePauw University and a master's degree in education from the University of Illinois in 1950. He received his doctorate from the University of Tennessee in 1953.

Mr. Capehart taught at the University of Tennessee, Butler University, McMaster University, New York University, Hunter College, Miami University of Ohio and Florida State University.

In 1956, he was appointed associate director of the Education Department of Hill and Knowlton Inc. in New York City. From 1963 until his retirement in 1977, he was the director of the Education Department of the American Iron and Steel Institute in Washington, D.C. In his capacity there he served as a consultant to more than 50 colleges, universities and school systems.

Through his teaching career, Mr. Capehart was a frequent contributor to professional journals. He was a member of numerous educational, professional and technical associations., including the Cosmos Club of Washington, D.C. He was listed in "American Men of Science," "Leaders in Education," "Who's Who in the South and Southwest" as well as in other professional biographical directories.

Mr. Capehart's first wife, Ida Mae, died in 1964, and his second wife, Susan, died in 1997.

He is survived by his children, Suzanne Warren of Chehalis, Wash., Dianne Anderson of Mineral Wells, W.Va., Mark Geannette of Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J., and Dawn Geannette-Cordo of West Paterson, N.J., and by six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

D'Elia Funeral Home in Lakewood handled arrangements.

James A. Galloway Sr.
Former local builder

James A. "Jim" Galloway Sr., 72, of Silver Star, Mont., died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at St. Peter's Hospital of Helena, Mont., after a long illness with kidney disease.

Mr. Galloway worked as a private building contractor in Oak Ridge until he retired in 1971. He was previously employed with the former Roane-Anderson company and the former Management Services Inc. in Oak Ridge.

After retirement, he moved to Grant, Mont., and two years later moved to Silver Star.

He was born in Transylvania County, N.C., on March 23, 1925, the son of Arden S. and Delia C. Stepp Galloway. He attended schools in North Carolina and served in both World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Galloway and his wife, Emily Taylor Galloway, who survives him, were married on Feb. 16, 1945, in Greenville, S.C.

In 1954, he became a member of Jehovah's Witnesses.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Galloway is survived by two daughters, Linda Dills and her husband, Bill, of LaFollette, and Marie Tumidajski and her husband, Hank, of Fairfield, Conn.; a son, James A. Galloway Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Butte, Mont.; two brothers, Wade Galloway of Clinton and Alfred Galloway of Vancouver, Wash.; and by three granddaughters.

His parents, three brothers, a sister and two grandsons died earlier.

The funeral was held Sunday, Sept. 28, in the chapel of K&L Mortuary in Twin Bridges, Mont., with Howard Mills officiating. Burial was at Sheridan cemetery in Sheridan, Mont.

Dorothia S. Randolph
Retired K-25 employee

Dorothia S. Randolph, 74, of Oak Ridge, formerly of Knoxville, died Monday afternoon, Oct. 6, 1997, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Randolph was employed for approximately 30 years with Union Carbide Nuclear Division before her retirement. She was a laboratory technician at the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant, later named K-25 Site.

She was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during World War II and in Korea where she was an aircraft instrument specialist.

Mrs. Randolph had been a longtime member of Thorngrove Baptist Church in Knoxville until recently when she moved her membership to Glenwood Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sisters, Lucille Randolph Scott and Reba LaForge, both of Knoxville; two brothers, John L. Randolph and his wife, Louise, and Zenith Randolph, all of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews.

Ophylene Cantrell and Ruth Lassiter, both of Oak Ridge, were considered special friends.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gentry-Griffey Funeral Chapel with Dr. Charles Clark officiating.

Burial will be at Thorngrove cemetery in Knoxville with full military honors conducted by the East Tennessee State Volunteer Honor Guard. Her nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at their convenience at the funeral home, 5301 Fountain Drive, Knoxville.

Julie Tucker Williamson
Native of Oak Ridge

Julie Ellen Tucker Williamson, 35, of West Knoxville, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1997, at her home after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Williamson, a native of Oak Ridge, was the daughter of Thomas and Carolyn Tucker of Solway, formerly of Oak Ridge. She was an American Field Service exchange student to Chile in 1979.

She attended the Virginia Institute of Technology and State University and in 1985 graduated from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor's degree in zoology.

Mrs. Williamson was an active member of First Farragut United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was active in the choir. She was a member of Bible Study Fellowship for many years.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, David Williamson; a son and a daughter, Benjamin and Erin, both of Knoxville; a sister, Sara Wellman and her husband, Jeffrey, of Brockport, N.Y.; two brothers, Bruce Tucker of Knoxville and Brian Tucker and his wife, Lorraine, of Marietta, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Kim Snyder of Boulder, Colo.; and by many other family members.

A private graveside service was to be held at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

A memorial service was planned for 3 this afternoon, Oct. 9, at First Farragut United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Edwards officiating. The family was to receive friends following the service at the church.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Missions Fund at First Farragut United Methodist Church, 11915 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37922; or to the American Cancer Society, 871 Weisgarber Road, Knoxville, TN 37923.

Douglas Glenn Dykes
ORHS graduate, welder

Douglas Glenn Dykes, 31, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 5, 1997, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Mr. Dykes was a 1986 Oak Ridge High School graduate. He was employed as a welder at Aqua-Chem in Knoxville for the past eight years.

He was born in Johnson City on April 24, 1966. He was the son of Carol Luethke and her husband, Steve, of Oak Ridge, and J.B. Dykes and his wife, Maryanne, of Daytona Beach, Fla.

He was a member of West Village Christian Church. According to the family, he enjoyed riding motorcycles and ATVs (all terrain vehicles) and camping.

In addition to his parents and step-parents, Mr. Dykes is survived by his wife, Angela Michelle Bass Dykes; two daughters, Samantha Michelle Dykes, a student at Glenwood Elementary, and Brooke Glenn Dykes, a student at Oak Ridge Preschool; two brothers, Donald Ray Dykes and his wife, Rhesa, of Johnson City, and Mark Hampton Dykes and his wife, Kimberly, of Lenoir City; his paternal grandmother, Erma Dykes of Elizabethton; and by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Noel Kirk officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at McCarty Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Claxton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to West Village Christian Church, 637 Robertsville Road, Oak Ridge, 37830, or to Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Grace Browder Scoggins
Mother of Oak Ridge resident

Grace Browder Scoggins, 89, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Scoggins was the mother of Linda S. Varnell of Oak Ridge. She had lived with her daughter and son-in-law, William A. Varnell, since the death of her husband, Allen F. Scoggins, in 1994.

She was a native of Bradley County and had lived in the Chattanooga area most of her life. She was a graduate of Bradley County High School and of Carson-Newman College.

Mrs. Scoggins was the daughter of Joseph Chester and Mary M. Nolie Browder of Cleveland. She was a teacher for more than 40 years in Chattanooga area school systems. She was active until her later years in the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Order of Eastern Star.

In addition to her local daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Scoggins is survived by a son, Larry B. Scoggins and his wife, Karen T., of Signal Mountain; two brothers, Dr. E.A. Browder of Stevenson, Ala., and Dr. J. Kenneth Browder of Scottsboro, Ala.; and five grandchildren, Jennifer and Cindy Scoggins and Mary, Daniel and James Varnell.

Other survivors include Mrs. Martin Ragsdale of Cleveland, Viola Ruth of Chattanooga, Nellie Peters of Live Oak, Fla., and several nieces and nephews, including Celia McKee, and Amelia, Judith and Jessica Browder of Stevenson, and Bobby Joe Browder of Scottsboro.

The Al Levines, the Charles Johnson family, Betty Bushey, Candy Metcalf, E.M. Spencer and T. Reo Hobson were considered special friends during Mrs. Scoggins' stay in Oak Ridge.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Vernon Samsom of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Oak Ridge and the Rev. Richard Childress of Signal Mountain Baptist Church officiating.

Burial will be at Hillcrest cemetery in Cleveland.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, Jan. 6, at the funeral home.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge with the Rev. Mr. Samsom officiating.

Shirley Hurt Kirkwood
Former ORNL secretary

Shirley Hurt Kirkwood, 62, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Kirkwood worked as a secretary at Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1955 to 1969. In 1969, she and her husband, Charles E. Kirkwood, who survives her, moved to Saudi Arabia. There she was employed with the Saudi Aramco Oil Co., from which she retired in 1984.

A 1953 graduate of Oak Ridge High School, she was named Miss Oak Ridge High School and was a cheerleader for three years.

She was born in Chapel Hill, Tenn., on June 6, 1935. She and her husband were married on July 17, 1954, at First United Methodist Church.

She was very sports-minded, her husband said. Both were avid bowlers, and Mrs. Kirkwood also enjoyed gardening, sewing and crafts. She was a Methodist.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Kimberley Kirkwood Knox and her husband, Wayne, of Concord, N.C.; a son, David Charles Kirkwood and his wife, Leigh Ann, of Knoxville; her mother, Polly Cromer Hurt of Norris; a brother, Bobby Hurt of Knoxville; and three grandchildren, Justin Wayne Knox, Shea Marie Knox and Callie Blake Kirkwood.

Her father, David S. Hurt, is deceased.

The funeral will be held at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 28, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Roy Zinn officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 29, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the American Cancer Society, Anderson County Unit, in care of Lee Costanzo, 103 Case Lane, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

William Harry Henry Sr.
Former Oak Ridge, Clinton resident

William Harry Henry Sr., 70, of Royal Trail, Manchester, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Murfreesboro.

Before moving to Manchester, Mr. Henry had lived in Clinton, Oak Ridge and Gifford, Ill.

He had worked as a maintenance supervisor at St. Mary's School and with the Clinton city schools. Mr. Henry had also worked as a sales clerk at Downtown Hardware in Oak Ridge. Before moving to Anderson County, he worked as a local law officer and as a sales clerk in Rademacher's Hardware in Gifford.

He was the son of Edward H. and Bessie Y. Henry, both now deceased. Mr. Henry was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War who retired as a technical sergeant after 28 years of service.

He was a Lions Club member for approximately 40 years, in clubs in Gifford, Oak Ridge and Clinton.

Mr. Henry was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church of Manchester. He had previously been a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge and of Sinking Springs United Methodist Church of Clinton.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Donihe Henry; seven daughters, Beverly Henry of Winter Haven, Fla., Judy Stonestreet and her husband, Terry, of Rantoul, Ill., Nancy O'Rourke and her husband, Lawrence, of Oak Ridge, Sue Washegesic and her husband, Ron, and Barbara A. Henry, all of South Haven, Mich., Mary Mills and her husband, Kirt, of Manchester, and Lorra Fields and her husband, Dennis, of Kingsport; and three sons, David Henry and his wife, Patricia, of Rantoul, Craig Henry and his wife, Suzanne, of Houston, Texas, and David Donihe and his wife, Roseann, of Waterford, Conn.

Mr. Henry is also survived by a sister, Bette Allers of South Haven; four brothers, Harold Henry of Morristown and Neal Henry, Jack Henry and Tommy Henry, all of South Haven; 13 grandchildren; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

His first wife, Dorothy Henry, a son, William Harry Henry Jr., and a brother, Jim Henry, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Catherine Nance, the Rev. Bob Edmunds and the Rev. Mike Johnson officiating.

A graveside service including military rites with full honors will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is handling arrangements.
