Dallas Faye Phillips
Clinton resident

Dallas Faye Phillips, 59, of Clinton, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Phillips is survived by her husband, R.C. Phillips; two daughters, Jennifer Phillips of Clinton and Donna Schwartz and her husband, Michael, of Richmond, Va.; a son, Lee Roy Phillips and his wife, Norma, of Clinton; a sister and two brothers, Gail Fortune, George Brummitt and Carvel Brummitt, all of Clinton; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, April 25, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at Sunset cemetery in Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Donald L. Cox
Lake City resident

Donald L. Cox, 59, of Lake City, died Monday, May 4, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Cox is survived by his wife, Mary Poore Cox; two daughters, Donna Stallings and her husband, Jason Stallings, of Lake City, and Paula Sprouse and her husband, Willard Sprouse Jr., of Clinton; two sons, Ricky Cox and his wife, Robin Cox, of Heiskell, and Tim Cox and his wife, Libby Cox, of Bremen, Ga.; his mother, Marie Cox of Lake City; four sisters, Geraldine Cox, Betty Powers and Gertrude Smith, all of Clinton, and Linda Huling of LaFollette; a brother, James Cox of Lake City; and eight grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 7, in the chapel of Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City with the Rev. Jack Taylor officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 8, at Disney Family cemetery in Lake City.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Nancy Della Haney
Batley Baptist member

Nancy Della Haney, 81, of Clinton, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Haney was a member of Batley Baptist Church in the Batley community.

She was born in Morgan County on Sept. 28, 1916, the daughter of Balium and Francis Applebee Davis.

Mrs. Haney enjoyed her family, her church and gardening, the family said.

She was the widow of Oscar Haney.

Mrs. Haney is survived by four daughters, Margaret Nance and her husband, Shirley, and Marlene Tinker and her husband, Steve, all of Clinton, Anna Hunsaker and her husband, Gary, of Eaton, Ohio, and Linda Cook and her husband, Carl, of Oak Ridge; and two sons, Noah Haney and his wife, Gracie, and Clayton Haney and his wife, Sandra, all of Clinton.

She is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Another son, Freeman Jennings, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at Batley Baptist Church. The Rev. David Coffman, the Rev. W.L. Moore and the Rev. Luke Kidwell will officiate.

Burial will follow at Batley cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 29, at Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs.

Audrey M. Ward
Oak Ridge resident

Audrey M. Ward, 76, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Ward was a homemaker.

She was born in Calumet City, Ill., on Dec. 7, 1921, the daughter of Royal and Lillian Kick Smith.

Mrs. Ward is survived by her husband, Robert H. Ward; two daughters, Carol Ward of Lancing, Ill., and Roberta Jones and her husband, Bill, of Loudon; a son, Royal Ward and his wife, Donna, of Albion, Mich.; a sister, Arlite Marquardt and her husband, Walter, of Laguna Hills, Calif.; and a brother, Atwood E. Smith of Hammond, Ind.

She is also survived by two grandchildren, Laura McDowell and her husband, Tim, of Albion, and Courtney Ward of Philadelphia, Pa.; and one great-grandchild, Austin McDowell of Albion.

It was Mrs. Ward's wish to be cremated. There will be no services.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the American Cancer Society, Anderson County Unit, in care of Lee Costanzo, 103 Case Lane, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Weatherford Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Wilbur W. Landay
Brother of Oak Ridger

Wilbur W. Landay, 84, of Washington, Pa., died June 15, 1998, following a lengthy illness.

He was the brother of Nathan N. Landay of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Landay had been in the jewelry business in Washington for 51 years.

He was born in Washington on Feb. 10, 1914, the son of Abraham and Annetta H. Samolsky Landay.

He was a lifelong member of Beth Israel Congregation, of which his great-grandfather, Nathan Samuels, was a founder in 1880.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Landay served in the 61st Air Service Squadron, 45th Service Group, from 1942 to 1945. He earned the rank of technical sergeant and received the Good Conduct Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal with two Bronze Stars and the Victory Medal.

Mr. Landay also was a member of LOOM 22, Washington Masonic Lodge No. 164, F&AM, and B'nai B'rith.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Greenberg Landay; his son Dr. Alan Landay and his sons, Benjamin and Nathan; and his son David Landay, an attorney, and his daughters, Kara and Paige.

Mr. Landay's sister, Edith Reith, died in childhood.

Joseph Edward O'Berry
Retired pipefitter, welder

Joseph Edward O'Berry, 82, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at Briarcliff Health Care Center.

Mr. O'Berry was retired from Bechtel Corp., in Midland, Mich., where he was a pipefitter and welder. He had been a resident of Oak Ridge for the past five years.

He had been a member of the Shriners for 52 years and was a member of Blue Lodge, Landrum No. 48, in Savannah, Ga., and a member of Shriners Kerbela temples in both Knoxville and Savannah.

He was born in Florida on Aug. 6, 1915, the son of Henry Edward and Pearl O'Berry.

Mr. O'Berry loved to fish, garden and read his Bible, the family said. He was a Baptist.

His wife, Irene Leslie O'Berry, died Sept. 26, 1966.

Mr. O'Berry is survived by a daughter, Doris Crabtree of Freeland, Mich.; a sister, Mary Ruth Cooper of Tampa, Fla.; and a brother, George O'Berry, of Philadelphia, Miss.

He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Hope Edwardson of Knoxville, Robin Mobley of Saginaw, Mich., and Cindy Catron, Michael Moses, Greg Moses, Leslie Moses and Stacy Moses, all of Oak Ridge; and by nine great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, a daughter, Joanne Moses, died Nov. 4, 1990, and a 10-day-old son, Jimmy Leon O'Berry, also died earlier.

The funeral was held Sunday night, Jan. 11, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Steve McDonald officiating. A Masonic service followed the funeral.

A graveside service was scheduled for 1 today, Jan. 12, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

Bobby Dean Phillips
New River merchant

Bobby Dean Phillips, 61, of Lake City, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Phillips owned and operated Phillips Coal Co., Phillips Trucking Co. and Phillips Grocery, all in the New River area. He also owned and operated Phillips Bus Lines in Lake City.

He was born in Anderson County on April 12, 1936, the son of Lonas and Eva Phillips, both now deceased.

Mr. Phillips enjoyed the outdoors and loved fishing and coon hunting, the family said. He was a member of Lake City Christian Fellowship Church.

He is survived by his wife, Becky Burnette Phillips; a daughter, Myra Phillips Bullock, and her husband, Roger, of Lake City; a stepdaughter and a stepson, Vickie Harmon and Joe Noe Jr., both of Lake City; a brother, Ernest Franklin Phillips of Clinton; two grandchildren, Robert and Rachel Bullock of Lake City; three step-grandchildren, Cody, Ryan and Jonathan; and by several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

A daughter, Virgie Ann Phillips, and a son, Franklin Leon Phillips, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, Nov. 20, at Lake City Christian Fellowship Church with the Rev. Justin Phillips and the Rev. Wayne Phillips officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at Grave Hill Baptist Church cemetery in New River.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the church.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Lake City Christian Fellowship Church, P.O. Box 939, Lake City, TN 37769.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of arrangements.

Stella Brock Karnes
Knoxville resident

Stella Brock Karnes, 75, of Knoxville, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mrs. Karnes is survived by three daughters, Brenda Vandever and her husband, Joe, of Kingston, Vicky Ratcliff and her husband, Greg, of Knoxville, and Gayle Barker and her husband, Tom, of Powell; a son, Tony Karnes; and two brothers, Lynn Brock and Everett Brock.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at Greenwood cemetery in Knoxville with the Rev. Steve Hill officiating.

Friends may call at their convenience at Mynatt Funeral Home, 2829 Rennoc Road, Knoxville.

Joyce 'Tootie' Cobb
Lake City resident

Joyce Ann "Tootie" Cobb, 56, of Lake City, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997, at her home.

Mrs. Cobb is survived by two sons, Bobby Ray Cobb and Douglas Cobb, both of Lake City; her mother, Eula Hawkins of Lake City; and three sisters, Lula Ann Poore and Mary Carden and her husband, Lee, all of Lake City, and Pauline Soloman and her husband, Ivan, of Hawkins County.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997, in the chapel of Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City with the Rev. David Walker officiating.

Burial will follow at Leach cemetery in Lake City.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at the funeral home.

Martha Browning
Longtime civic volunteer

Martha Browning, 76, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Browning was a longtime civic volunteer and gave a lifetime of work to a city she loved, her family said. She became active in the League of Women Voters in the early 1950s and served as president, both of the Oak Ridge chapter and at the state level.

She was instrumental in bringing voting machines to Oak Ridge and worked for years on reapportionment issues. Her children described her as a woman who was not afraid to speak out on controversial topics and as one who cared deeply about Oak Ridge while following the city's maturation through the decades.

Mrs. Browning was also one of the founders of the Oak Ridge Art Center, driving the family station wagon to galleries around Tennessee to bring works of art for exhibition in Oak Ridge. She supported the Oak Ridge Community Playhouse, the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra and the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association.

She was a charter member of the Oak Ridge Dance Club and helped form the Atomic City Aquatic Club. She was a volunteer at the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge and at Recording for the Blind. She was also an avid supporter of the former Crippled Children's Foundation for many years.

Mrs. Browning was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, completing requirements for a bachelor of science degree at the age of 51. After graduating, she worked for the Oak Ridge schools and at the biology library at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Her family said those who met her in later life and learned of her accomplishments only recently will remember her as a woman whose indomitable spirit allowed her to make a difference. Her keen interest in the city she loved and her avid reading of The Oak Ridger brought her great pleasure, they said.

She was the widow of Robert Kenton Browning Sr., who died in 1976.

Mrs. Browning is survived by her three children, Bentley Marane and her husband, Ken Miller, of Atlanta, Ann Dickey and her husband, Jonathan Lyttle, of McLean, Va., and Robert Kenton "Ken" Browning Jr. and his wife, Suzie, of Nashville; and three grandchildren, Caitlin and Tayler Lyttle of McLean and Andrew Kenton Marane and his wife, Elizabeth, of Atlanta.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Stephen Freeman officiating.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic, 205 Badger Road, Oak Ridge, TN 37830; to the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge, 461 West Outer Drive, Oak Ridge, TN 37830; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
