Lela Mae Rumph
Retired from Nettie Lee Shop

Lela Mae Wilson Rumph, 84, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Born in Memphis on Oct. 18, 1913, she was the daughter of Elijah and Cora Frye Wilson.

Mrs. Rumph was retired as a sales clerk with the Nettie Lee Shop, a former women's clothing store in Oak Ridge.

She was a member of Central Baptist Church of Oak Ridge. She was also a member of the National Campers and Hikers Club and of the Mountaineer Retiree Chapter of Oak Ridge.

Among her interests were making hand-crafted items, sewing, growing flowers, cooking and doing things for her friends and neighbors.

She was the widow of Woodrow Thomas Rumph Jr., who died on Nov. 13, 1997.

Mrs. Rumph is survived by her daughter, Lucille Bissell and her husband, Charles, of Henderson, Nev.; three grandchildren, Kimberly Dawn Bissell Harper and her husband, Jay, of Las Vegas, Nev., Jay Rumph of Asheville, N.C., and Julie Rumph, a student at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville; and a great-grandson, Jonathan Harper.

Her son, James E. Rumph, died in 1980.

The funeral was held Sunday, Aug. 9, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary. The Rev. Bob Gray officiated.

A graveside service was to be held at 9 this morning at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the American Diabetes Association, Roane/Anderson Chapter, P.O. Box 7037, Oak Ridge TN 37831.

Mattie Welch Hammonds
Longtime Oliver Springs resident

Mattie Naomi Welch Hammonds, 80, of Oliver Springs, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Hammonds had been a resident of Oliver Springs for the past 33 years.

She was born in LaFollette on March 8, 1917, the daughter of William and Ida Bean Welch. She lived in Harlan, Ky., for 13 years before moving to Oliver Springs.

Mrs. Hammonds was a member of the Mary Helen United Methodist Church of Kentucky. She enjoyed her flower garden and crocheting, the family said.

She is survived by her husband, Owen A. Hammonds Sr.; a daughter, Glenda Dunlap of Oliver Springs; and three sons, Kenneth E. Hammonds of Manchester, Larry Hammonds and his wife, Linda, of Oliver Springs, and Owen A. Hammonds Jr. and his wife, Judy, of Harriman.

Mrs. Hammonds is also survived by two sisters, Bonnie Russell and Mary Farmer, both of Lenoir City; two brothers, Clyde Welch of Lenoir City and Bill Welch of Harriman; and by 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A sister, Lois Wurts, and two brothers, Dewey Welch and Otis Welch, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, Feb. 26, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Tommy Hensley and the Rev. Steve McDonald officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Sidney Daniel Schiffman Jr.
Retired K-25 chemical engineer

Sidney Daniel Schiffman Jr., 89, of 302 Vermont Avenue, died Sunday morning, Feb. 22, 1998, at Windwood Health and Rehabilitation Center in Clinton where he had lived for several years.

Mr. Schiffman had been a resident of Oak Ridge since 1944 when he moved here from Huntsville, Ala. In Huntsville, he was employed with Redstone Army Arsenal. He began employment at Union Carbide Nuclear Division as a chemical engineer in the Technical Division at its K-25 Site, then the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant. He retired in 1970 after 25 years service.

He was credited with development work, which was considered instrumental in at least two patents awarded to Union Carbide under its contract with the Atomic Energy Commission.

Mr. Schiffman was born on April 29, 1908, in Jacksonville, Fla., one of three children of Sidney D. and Ruth Walzer Schiffman. Before employment at Redstone Arsenal, he attended Ohio State University and lived in Charleston, S.C., and Birmingham, Ala., where he was engaged in the design of letterheads and in design and fabrication of neon signs.

He was a member of Temple Beth El in Knoxville.

Mr. Schiffman was a longtime active member of the Oak Ridge Lions Club and will be remembered for chairing the committee working with Dr. Elaine Bunick to screen Oak Ridge children for early detection of diabetes. He also served as editor of the club's district newsletter, 12N News-Views. The Lions Club named Mr. Schiffman Lion of the Decade for his club work from 1980 to 1990.

In addition to his work with the Lions Club, he was active with the Recording for the Blind, and with his wife, Carolyn Gerson Schiffman, served many years as a community volunteer with the American Museum of Science and Energy. His wife, originally from Montgomery, Ala., died earlier.

Mr. Schiffman was an avid artist in many media. He made pen and ink drawings, built objects from plastic resin and was a photographer, with many of his works receiving recognition for artistic content. Following retirement, he chose to pursue photography while he and his wife traveled extensively to Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean.

He is survived by a daughter, Jean S. Rapp and her husband, Karl E. Rapp III, of Knoxville; two granddaughters, Jennifer McClain Swan and her husband, Frank Swan, of Knoxville, and Carolyn "Callie" McClain Pfeifer and her husband, Andrew Todd Pfeifer, of Nashville; and a sister, Dorothy Kottler and her husband, Julian Kottler, of Nashville.

In addition to his wife and parents, a brother, Richard Schiffman of Atlanta, Ga., died earlier.

Mr. Schiffman bequeathed his remains to the University of Tennessee College of Medicine.

A private family service will be held at a later date at St. John's Episcopal Cathedral with the Rev. John C. Ross, dean, presiding.

Lucille Perkins Harris
Retired elementary teacher

Lucille Perkins Harris, 87, of NHC HealthCare Center of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, at the center. She had lived in Oak Ridge for the past five years.

Mrs. Harris was an elementary school teacher in Lebanon, in Wilson County, for 46 years.

She was a member of First Methodist Church in Lebanon and was active in the Girl Scouts.

Mrs. Harris was a world traveler. She loved to play bridge and read, and was a great seamstress, her family said, adding that she also enjoyed the arts and was a family-oriented person.

She is survived by her son, Ray Harris and his wife, Mary Sue, of Oak Ridge; two sisters, Maurice Maggart and Ruby Lee Price, both of Lebanon; and four grandchildren, Laura Miner of Center Sandwich, N.H., Suzette Harris of Seattle, Wash., Raymond Michael Harris of Mount Juliet, and Melinda Harris of Philadelphia, Pa.

The funeral was held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, in the chapel of Partlow Funeral Home in Lebanon with the Rev. Gerald Noffsinger officiating.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to First Methodist Church, West Main Street, Lebanon, TN 37087.

Floyd Hipshire Sr.
Retired ORNL employee

Floyd Hipshire Sr., 86, of Knoxville, died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mr. Hipshire retired in 1978 from Union Carbide Nuclear Division. He had worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for 35 years.

He was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Karns.

Mr. Hipshire is survived by a son, Floyd Hipshire Jr., and his wife, Joann; seven grandchildren, Mark Hipshire and his wife, Elaine, Kenneth Hipshire and his wife, Teresa, Traci Duncan and her husband, Rick, Elaine Hobson and her husband, Steve, Steve Jones and his wife, Mona, Bobby Jones and his wife, Rhonda, and Terri Woods and her husband, Mike; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by two sisters, Carrie Rickett and Alta Bowling; and by several nieces and nephews.

Vivian Gordon was considered a special friend.

His wife, Annie Kate Hipshire, and his daughter, Faye Hipshire Jones, both died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8:30 tonight, Jan. 7, at McCarty Weaver Cumberland Memorial Chapel, 5815 Western Ave., Knoxville. The Rev. Ronald Stewart will officiate.

Family and friends will meet at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 8, at the funeral home to go in procession to Oak Ridge Memorial Park for an 11 a.m. graveside service. Mr. Hipshire's grandsons and his great-grandson Randy will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Grace Baptist Church Building Fund, 7171 Oak Ridge Highway, Knoxville, TN 37931.

Walter Alvin Fox
Retired automobile dealer

Walter Alvin Fox, 72, of Clinton died Wednesday, July 8, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Fox was a retired automobile dealer.

He was born in Oliver Springs on Aug. 12, 1926, the son of Joseph Benjamin and Mima Hoskins Fox. He was a graduate of Oliver Springs High School and served in the military in Germany for several years.

Mr. Fox was a member of First Baptist Church of Clinton. He was also a member of Coal Creek Lodge No. 492, a Scottish Rite 32nd degree Mason and a Shrine member of Kerbela Temple.

After retiring as an automobile dealer, he enjoyed raising cattle on his farm in Dutch Valley.

Mr. Fox is survived by his wife, Irene Leinart Fox, retired from Oak Ridge schools as a music teacher; a daughter, Karen Fox Barreira and her husband, Deninson G. Barreira, of Clinton; a son, Thomas Dale Fox and his wife, Meschelle D. Fox, of Knoxville; two granddaughters, Rosanna Barreira Giles and her husband, Michael N. Giles, of Maryville, and; Yolanda G. Barreira of Clinton; and two grandsons, Mark Anthony Barreira and his fiancee, Cynthia A. Beets, of Johnson City, and Joschuwa S. Baines of Jacksonville, Fla.

He is also survived by a great-grandson, Andrew Austin Giles of Maryville; and brothers and sisters, R.C. "Clyde" Fox and Charlie Fox, both of Oliver Springs, Lester Fox and Ruth Fox Worthington, both of Clinton, and Myra Fox Hackworth and Mattie Fox Stringfield, both of Knoxville; and by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 8:30 tonight, July 10, at First Baptist Church of Clinton with the Rev. Sam Dean officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 11, at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the donor's church or favorite charity.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is handling arrangements.

Nelle A. Jones
Former Oak Ridge resident

Nelle Arthur Jones, 79, of Madison, Wis., died Tuesday, June 2, 1998, in Madison.

Mrs. Jones and her husband, Mark F. Jones, were former residents of Oak Ridge. Mark Jones was employed by the Atomic Energy Commission when they lived here. He has since died.

She was born in North Carolina on Aug. 31, 1918, the daughter of George G. and Berta Halyburton Arthur, both now deceased.

Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and according to her family was devoted to her husband and children. She had spent the last year and a half living with her daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Ramon Sanna, in Madison.

In addition to her daughter and son-in-law, she is survived by grandchildren Deb Bargman and her husband, Todd, and Jen and Andy; and her daughter-in-law, Thirza Jones and her daughter, Gretchen, all of Knoxville.

Besides her husband and parents, Mrs. Jones' son, Mark Jones, died earlier.

The funeral was held Thursday morning, June 4, at St. Andrew Episcopal Church in Madison with the Rev. Patrick Raymond officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. Gail Brown officiating.

Cress Funeral Service, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, Wis., is handling arrangements.

William Harold Leach
Lake City resident

William Harold Leach, 89, of Lake City, died at 12:25 p.m. Sunday, May 31, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Leach is survived by a sister, Thelma E. Moore of Lake City.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, June 2, in the chapel of Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City with the Rev. George DeLozier officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, at Leach cemetery in Lake City.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
