Dr. Margaret S. Hibbs
Daughter of Roger, Mary Jane Hibbs

Dr. Margaret S. Hibbs, 47, of West Hartford, Conn., died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at her home.

She was born in Oak Ridge, the daughter of Roger and Mary Jane Aland Hibbs, now of Harriman and formerly of Oak Ridge.

Dr. Hibbs was an honors graduate of Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., and a graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Memphis. After completing her internship, residency, fellowship and post-graduate study in rheumatology in Memphis, Dr. Hibbs received a research appointment to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Memphis and joined the faculty of the UT College of Medicine.

Since 1988, she had served in a research capacity at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Newington, Conn., and as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. Dr. Hibbs had published numerous articles and research papers.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by four sisters, Joanne Hibbs and Kathy Buckingham and her husband, John, all of Knoxville, Carrie Stradley and her husband, Scott, of Burleson, Texas, and Mary Beth Sutton and her husband, Mike, of Chattanooga; three brothers, Roger Hibbs and his wife, Kathy, of Atlanta, Ga., David Hibbs and his wife, LeEllen, of Mebane, N.C., and Dan Hibbs and his wife, Tania, of Aspen, Colo.; and by 12 nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 5, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Oak Ridge.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to St. Mary's School, 327 Vermont Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Hazel Martin Riggs
Former YWCA volunteer

Hazel Martin Riggs, 74, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, April 3, 1998, at her home.

At one time, Mrs. Riggs had been active with the YWCA of Oak Ridge, where she taught arts and crafts. Her family said she enjoyed gardening. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension of Knoxville.

She was born in Wallsend, Ky., on April 25, 1923, the daughter of Robert Kara and Amanda Elizabeth Laws Martin.

Mrs. Riggs is survived by her husband, Lester Harold Riggs; a daughter, Patricia Ann Riggs of Knoxville; a son, Randall Lee Riggs and his wife, Donna, of Knoxville; a half-sister, Clara Bea Allen and her husband, Wayne, of Knoxville; and two grandchildren, Logan Alexander Riggs and Alexandra Lee Riggs, also of Knoxville.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, April 6, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Stephen Freeman, chaplain of Covenant Hospice, officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. Gordon Temple, assistant to the rector at the Church of the Ascension, officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the mortuary.

Jackie Gilham Ethridge
Mother of Richard Ethridge

Jackie Gilham Ethridge, 84, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge after a long battle with cancer.

Mrs. Ethridge was born in Dora, Ala., on March 24, 1914, the daughter of Terrance and Mae Cline Gilham.

She was a member of the Mountain Assembly Church of God of Oliver Springs and was also retired as an ordained minister of the Oliver Springs church. She had been a resident of Oak Ridge since 1951 and attended the Oak Ridge Church of God.

Mrs. Ethridge was a former member of Chapter 390 of the Order of Eastern Star in Oak Ridge. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and the outdoors, according to her family, who also said her children and grandchildren were a big part of her life.

She is survived by her husband, Charles C. Ethridge; a daughter, Brenda Demps of Oliver Springs and her special friend, Frank Thursby, of Oak Ridge; three sons, Jackie Carroll Ethridge and his wife, Joanna, of Clinton, James Downing Ethridge and his wife, Eva, of Springboro, Ohio, and Richard Thomas Ethridge and his wife, Sharon, of Oak Ridge; a stepson, Charles C. Ethridge of McCalla, Ala.; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Ethridge of Houston, Texas; and 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

A son, Charles Franklin Ethridge, died on June 6, 1998. Two grandsons also died earlier, Chuck Ethridge in December 1994 and Keith Ethridge in December 1995

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary of Oak Ridge.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oak Ridge Highway, Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.

The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society of Anderson County, in care of Lee Costanzo, 103 Case Lane, Oak Ridge TN 37830.

Robert E. LaCasse
Oak Ridge resident

Robert E. LaCasse, 61, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, Nov. 21, 1997, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

He is survived by his wife, Ute LaCasse; a daughter, Donna Fraumane of Amsterdam, N.Y.; and a son, Christopher LaCasse of Knoxville.

No service will be held.

McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Hubert Miller
Harriman resident

Hubert Miller, 61, of Harriman, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 1997, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Johnson City.

Mr. Miller was born in Union County on Nov. 25, 1935, the son of Frank and Neva Ann Bridges Miller, both now deceased.

His family moved to the Oliver Springs area when he was an infant and he had lived in the Roane County area since that time. He was a Baptist.

Mr. Miller is survived by three brothers, Raymond Miller and his wife, Vina, of New Tazewell, and Clive H. Miller and his wife, Dorothy, and Ova C. Miller and his wife, Wilma, all of Harriman; and by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Kenneth Stubbs officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 27, at New Fairview cemetery in Oliver Springs.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Paul William Shearer
Retired from LMES

Paul William Shearer, 50, of Harriman, died Friday, Nov. 21, 1997, at his home.

Mr. Shearer was retired from Lockheed Martin Center for Continuing Education in Oak Ridge, where he had worked for 27 years.

He was born in Stoughton, Mass., on Aug. 30, 1947, the son of Dorothy Pentz Shearer and of Paul Kirkham Shearer, now deceased. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, he served in the U.S. Army and with the 807th MASH Reserve Unit.

Mr. Shearer was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and formerly served on the Vestry.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Kathie Canfield Shearer; two daughters, Nicole Shearer and her fiancé, Ronnie Jones, of Harriman, and Shannon Stewart and her husband, Gerry, of Staffordsville, Ky.; and two sons, Paul Steele Shearer and his wife, Claire, of Metropolis, Ill., and Todd Douglas Shearer and his wife, Donna, of Killeen, Texas.

Mr. Shearer is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kassie and Charles Paul Shearer of Carrsville, Ky., Kaitlyn and Nathaniel Shearer of Killeen, Rachel and Lucas Stewart of Staffordsville and Matthew Jones of Harriman; four sisters, Audrey Farnsley, Joyce Johnson and her husband, Randy, all of Paducah, Ky., Jean Cambra of Taunton, Mass., and Leslie Bell of Brockton, Mass.; and two brothers, Freddie Shearer and his wife, Sue, of Berea, Ohio, and Larry Shearer and his wife, Teresa, of Brockton, Mass.

Also surviving are his mother- and father-in-law, Bill and Alma Canfield of Paducah; two sisters-in-law, Lori Canfield of Lexington, Ky., and Betsy Akerly and her husband, Marvin, of Erie, Pa.; a brother-in-law, Bill Canfield and his wife, Adele, of Farmingdale, N.Y.; and by several nieces and nephews.

Fred and Carmen Myer, Phillip and Cecile Marcum and Ewing and Kim Fiers were considered special friends.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Stephen Freeman officiating.

Following the service, the family will receive friends in the Parish Hall.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Covenant Home and Hospice Care, 2497 S. Roane St., Suite 210, Harriman, TN 37748; or to the Serenity Club of Oak Ridge, P.O. Box 5286, Oak Ridge, TN 37831; or to a charity of the donor's choice.

McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Billy Joe Taylor
Harriman resident

Billy Joe Taylor, 37, of Harriman, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997, in Nashville.

Mr. Taylor was born in Roane County on Feb. 27, 1960. He attended Oliver Springs High School and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Mr. Taylor is survived by his mother, Laura Tuck Taylor of Harriman; five sisters, Mary Morgan of Oliver Springs, Shirley Taylor of Oakland, Calif., and Helen Daugherty, Peggy Underwood and Ruth Scarbrough, all of Harriman; six brothers, William Thomas "Red" Taylor, Jerry Wayne Taylor, Charles Phillips Jr. and David L. Phillips, all of Harriman, Larry David Taylor of Washburn and Charles Leonard Taylor of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and by several nieces and nephews.

His father, Gomaze Taylor Sr., and another brother, Gomaze Taylor Jr., are deceased.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, Nov. 25, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Ellis Patterson officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, at Dyllis cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Ruby Clara Holder
Moran Baptist Church member

Ruby Clara Taylor Holder, 87, of Marlow, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Holder was a member of Moran Baptist Church in Clinton. She was a homemaker.

Born in Anderson County on June 24, 1910, she was the daughter of William and Nancy Margaret Taylor.

She was the widow of Willie Holder.

Mrs. Holder is survived by four daughters, Udine Williams and her husband, Alvin, of Knoxville, Betty Bean and her husband, Kenneth Bean, of Lake City, Rosalie Duncan and her husband, Paul, and Judy Taylor, all of Oak Ridge; and two sons, James Taylor of Clinton and Willie Holder and his wife, Mary, of Powell.

She is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Ruby Hampton of Clinton was considered a special friend.

Another daughter, Virginia Garner, and two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, died earlier.

The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Moran Baptist Church in Clinton with the Rev. Luke Kidwell and the Rev. Bill Dawson officiating.

Burial will be Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Poplar Creek cemetery in Clinton with the grandsons serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of arrangements.

Eugene M. Jones
Lake City resident

Eugene M. Jones, 74, of Lake City, died at 8:35 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Anna Bea Jones; a daughter, Ann Long of Clinton; two sons, Terry Jones of Knoxville and Harold Jones of Indiana; a sister, Levetta Andrews of Pennsylvania; two brothers, Harvey Jones and his wife, Irene, of Lake City and Frank Jones and his wife, Helen, of Michigan; and by seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, Feb. 3, in the chapel of Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City with the Rev. Brian Courtney officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at McCarty Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Claxton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Edith M. Kesterson
Clinton grocery worker

Edith M. Kesterson, 52, of Clinton, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mrs. Kesterson was employed by Wholesale Food Outlet in Clinton as a scan coordinator. She had also worked at Proffitt's Department Store in Oak Ridge.

She was born in Knoxville on Dec. 16, 1945.

Mrs. Kesterson is survived by her husband, Bill Kesterson; her daughter, Tangelia Kesterson, stationed with the U.S. Air Force in Charleston, S.C.; her son, Bryan Kesterson of Clinton; her mother, Lucille Hunley of Andersonville; her sister, Bernice Hammock of Seymour; two brothers, Gene Hunley of Heiskell and Edgar Hunley of Andersonville; and by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her father, Lester D. Hunley, is deceased.

Darrell Sirmans of Kingston was considered a special friend.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, Feb. 3, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Clinton. Pallbearers will be Todd Hunley, Jimmy Hammock, Matt Sirmans, Larry Smith, Randell Williams and Tony Lester.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
