Barbara Underwood Smith
Former Oak Ridge resident

Barbara Underwood Smith, 67, of Bothell Way, Wash., died Saturday, April 25, 1998, in Washington after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Smith was born in North Carolina in 1932, the daughter of Thomas and Erma Underwood, both now deceased. She was a 1949 graduate of Oak Ridge High School and had lived in Washington for many years.

She is survived by a daughter, Judy Miller, and a son, Michael Good, both of Washington; and by several brothers and sisters, Roger Underwood, Diane Nipper and her husband, Paul, Baxter Underwood and his wife, Janis, and Linda Grady and her husband, Timothy, all of Oak Ridge, Sara Hughes and her husband, Ralph, of Oliver Springs, and Ronnie Underwood and his wife, Jennie, of Clinton; and by four grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Richard Smith, died Monday, May 4, 1998, in Washington after a lengthy illness. A brother, Thomas E. Underwood, died in April 1945.

Services were held in Bothell.

Elizabeth Cagley Green
Knoxville resident

Elizabeth Cagley Green, 70, of Knoxville, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mrs. Green is survived by her husband, Homer Elden Green; three daughters, Karen Elizabeth "Kay" Smith, Vivian Spradlen and Judith Tyl and her husband, Edward; a sister, Effie Allison and her husband, Malcolm; and two brothers, Earl Cagley and Tommy Cagley and his wife, Carolyn.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, Nov. 26, at McCarty-Weaver Cumberland Chapel, 5815 Western Ave., Knoxville. The Rev. Randy Tinch and the Rev. J.B. Caylor will officiate.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 28, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight and 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 27, at the funeral home.

Thelma Valentine Hutchins
Health care volunteer

Thelma Valentine Davis Hutchins, 87, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at her home.

Mrs. Hutchins worked as a nurse's aide at a hospital in Decatur, Ind., from 1955 to 1965, when she moved to Oak Ridge. Here, she did volunteer work at Westmall and the Oak Ridge Health Care Center.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church and was involved in the church's visitation program to members who are shut-ins. She was also active with the Stephen Ministry at the church. She was considered a "people person," her family said.

Mrs. Hutchins was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, No. 390 in Oak Ridge, and in 1974 held the office of worthy matron.

She was born in Van Wert County, Ohio, on Feb. 14, 1910, the daughter of Franklin and Nancy Foley Davis.

Her first husband, Joseph Henry Pence, died on Feb. 14, 1961, and her second husband, Andrew Hutchins, died on July 29, 1981.

Mrs. Hutchins is survived by two daughters, Joan Nicholson and her husband, John, of Oak Ridge, and Janet R. Davis and her husband, Larry, of Wren, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Nancy Morgan and her husband, Robert, of St. Louis, Mo.; a stepson, Charles Hutchins Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, of Fairfax, Va.; and two sisters, Mae Lee of Adrian, Mich., and Marguerite Culliton of Saline, Mich.

She is also survived by six grandchildren, Jeffry Davis of Drain, Ore., Jack Davis, James Davis and Laura Davis, all of Wren, and Patricia Miller and Stephen Nicholson, both of Oak Ridge; four step-grandchildren, Jon Morgan of Massachusetts, Thomas Morgan of St. Louis and Brad Hutchins and Brian Hutchins of Fairfax; and by 13 great-grandchildren.

Betty Hubbard of Oak Ridge was considered a special friend.

The funeral will be held at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Ken Henderlight officiating.

Burial will be in Convoy, Ohio, at the IOOF cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to First United Methodist Church, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Clayton Luther Wilson
Husband of former Oak Ridger

Clayton Luther "Clay" Wilson, 51, of Burns, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 1997, at Horizon Medical Center in Dickson of an apparent heart attack.

Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Katy Barton Wilson, formerly of Oak Ridge; a daughter, Kate Wilson of Burns; two sons, Clay Wilson Jr. of Burns and Greg Wilson of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Tracy Holmes of Fort Worth, Texas, and Lavender Berry of Georgia; and by three brothers, Steven Wilson, Pete Geren and Charlie Geren, all of Fort Worth.

The funeral was held at Taylor Funeral Home in Dickson with the Rev. Bill Barger officiating. Burial was at Dickson Union cemetery.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Tennessee Conservation League, 300 Orlando Ave., Nashville, TN 37209-3200.

Janet Baker Zachry
Woman has local relatives

Janet Yvonne Baker Zachry, 39, of Franklin, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Zachry was the daughter-in-law of David and Deannie Zachry of Oak Ridge. She was the wife of D. Spencer Zachry of Franklin.

She was born in Nashville and graduated from Cohn High School and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. At the time of her death, she was the director of admissions at Harpeth Academy where she had been a key member of the administrative staff since 1993.

Mrs. Zachry also served as a student adviser and mentor to groups of fifth- and sixth-grade students. She created the monthly Exploratory Program for sixth-grade students which included service projects such as Meals on Wheels, as well as exposing the students to varied life experiences, the family said. She also initiated the school's financial aid program.

Prior to this position, she served as legal secretary at Baker, Campbell and Parsons and as a secretary at Arcata Corp. and First Presbyterian Church in Franklin.

Mrs. Zachry was a member of Historic Franklin Presbyterian Church where she served as elder, clerk of the session, Junior and Senior High Youth Group leader, Presbyterian Women circle leader, flutist, and choir and bell choir member.

In addition to her local relatives and her husband, she is survived by two sons, Davis Baker Zachry and Edward Taylor Zachry, both of Franklin; her parents, C.A. and Evonne Baker of Goodlettsville; a sister, Judy Haury of Nashville; two brothers, Larry Baker and Gary Baker, also of Nashville; and by several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins in Waverly.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Central Standard Time, at Historic Franklin Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Sally Hughes officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church's Memorial Hall following the service.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Janet Baker Zachry Memorial Educational Fund, in care of Franklin National Bank, Attn: John Walker, 210 E. Main St., Franklin, TN 37064.

Williamson Memorial Funeral Home in Franklin is handling arrangements.

Hilda S. Batty
Mother of Oak Ridge resident

Hilda S. Batty, 102, of Harahan, La., died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, in Olympia, Wash.

Mrs. Batty was the mother of Sal Smith of 103 Walton Lane.

She was born in New Orleans and lived there most of her life except for a few years during her early married years.

After high school, she attended Spencer Business College. She then worked for Southern Pine Association as an accountant until her marriage to Reginald W. Batty Sr. She had a great aptitude for working with figures and keeping books, her daughter said.

She and her husband were married 74 years at the time of his death in 1996 at the age of 101. They were frequent visitors to Oak Ridge and particularly liked to come to view the fall colors.

In addition to her local daughter and her daughter's husband, Harold Smith, Mrs. Batty is survived by two other daughters, Dixie Ngheim of Olympia, Wash., and Shirley Asfour of Zurich, Switzerland; a son, R.W. Batty Jr., of Port Neches, Texas; and by 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Burial was at the historic New Orleans Metairie cemetery.

Turner Monroe Sampley
Oak Ridge resident

Turner Monroe Sampley, 86, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at Briarcliff Health Care Center.

Mr. Sampley is survived by a daughter, Anne Manning-Bigelow of Florida.

The body was cremated. No services will be held per Mr. Sampley's wishes.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the American Cancer Society, Anderson County Unit, in care of Lee Costanzo, 103 Case Lane, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Weatherford Mortuary handled arrangements.

John M. Henry
Former Oak Ridge resident

John M. Henry, 61, of Grand Bay, Ala., died Friday, April 24, 1998, at his home.

Mr. Henry grew up in Oak Ridge after moving here with his family in February 1944. He had lived in Grand Bay for the past 23 years.

He was born in Jellico on Feb. 14, 1937, the son of Nelle Hardie and William T. Henry, both now deceased.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran and worked for the Corning Glass Co., in Pascagoula, Miss., for 13 years.

Mr. Henry loved fishing at Dauphin Island and in the bay near his home, his family said.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Delories Henry; two daughters, Allison Lawrence and her husband, David, of Mobile, Ala., and Andrea Swann and her husband, Rodney, of Slidell, La.; and a son, Matthew Henry of Grand Bay.

Mr. Henry is also survived by two brothers, William T. Henry of Oak Ridge and Thomas P. Henry of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Juanell Byrd of Pioneer and Nedra Potts of Gallatin; two grandsons, Jordan Tyler Swann and Nicholas Swann; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim and Vel Berry of Palmetto, Ga., were considered special friends.

A brother, Jim Henry, and a sister, Atha Henry, died earlier.

The funeral was held in the chapel of Serenity Funeral Home in Mobile, Ala.

Burial was at Serenity Memorial Gardens in Mobile.

Valentine

Stuart Valentine, 88, of Clinton, died at 1:03 this morning, Nov. 25, 1997, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is in charge of arrangements, which were incomplete this morning.
