Mary 'Babe' Edwards
Holiday Bureau, community worker

Mary "Babe" Edwards, 89, of the Frost Bottom community of Oliver Springs, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Edwards had worked with the Holiday Bureau since its inception, approximately 35 years ago. She often expressed her satisfaction in volunteer work and said that each year she looked forward to signing up low-income families in the county for aid at Christmas -- food baskets for families and toys for the children.

She served on the former Anderson County Welfare Advisory Board, the predecessor to the Anderson County Community Action Commission. During the mid-1970s, while on the board, she organized the geriatric-aide training courses for recipients of Aid to Families with Dependent Children. Mrs. Edwards was still a representative on the ACCAC board at the time of her death.

In 1993, she was the recipient of the Children's Hero Award, an award presented by the Atomic City Kiwanis Club. She was chosen out of 34 nominees from Anderson County. She received a special plaque and a bouquet of roses during the awards ceremony held at the Garden Plaza Hotel.

Mrs. Edwards had lived in the Frost Bottom community for the past 40 years and took an interest in the area around her. At one time, she sponsored a cleanup contest for neighbors to keep their yards clean.

In 1968, she petitioned County Executive David Bolling and the Anderson County Commission to complete Frost Bottom Road so that elementary students could have an easier route to Norwood schools. She said the area was impassable during bad weather. The county school board wanted to move elementary children from Frost Bottom to Marlow.

Mrs. Edwards attended numerous meetings and spearheaded several protests to get the attention of county and state officials to finish the road. After a meeting with the Appalachian Regional Commission, the funds for the road came in September 1968 and the new Frost Bottom Road was completed in 1970.

In an interview with The Oak Ridger in 1993, Mrs. Edwards said she had she lost a car in flood waters of 1990 that also devastated several areas of Frost Bottom. In 1993, another flood filled her yard with mud, ruining her riding mower and washing away most of the gravel of a newly graveled driveway. She mounted a new protest and petitioned county officials for road improvements, complaining that trees and other debris had washed down from a nearby mining site and that a double culvert prevented the debris from washing away. The culvert had been built when the road was built in 1970.

Mrs. Edwards became a familiar face at county meetings. She organized motorcades around the Courthouse and she headed protest meetings, often held at Frost Bottom Church. Several times, Cox Funeral Home in Lake City provided transportation for her to travel to Nashville and lobby for the road improvements.

She is included in a recent book, "Circling Windrock Mountain" by Augusta Bell, a former Oak Ridge resident now living in North Carolina.

She was born in Staten Island, N.Y., on Aug. 3, 1909, the daughter of James and Katie Wall Pembroke. She was the widow of Leonard Edwards Sr.

Mrs. Edwards is survived by three children, Julia Lucas of Richmond, Va., Frank Prevo and his wife, Portia, of Raleigh, N.C., and Leonard Edwards Jr. and his wife, Edna, of Oliver Springs; and by 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Another daughter, Frances Stimmell, died earlier.
