Ralph Kenneth Rhyne
Retired photo engraver

Ralph Kenneth Rhyne, 70, of Andersonville, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 1997, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mr. Rhyne had retired after working for 32 years as a photo engraver for the Knoxville News-Sentinel.

He was born in Anderson County on Oct. 20, 1926, the son of Herman and Jennie Rhyne. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and had achieved the rank of motor machinist's mate third class.

Mr. Rhyne was a member of South Clinton Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Davis Rhyne; two daughters, Janice Legg and her husband, Edward D., of Andersonville, and Reitha Jameson and her husband, F.H., of Satellite Beach, Fla.; and one son, Kenneth Allen Rhyne and his wife, Sandra, of Andersonville.

Mr. Rhyne is also survived by two sisters, Dorothy Dempsey of Georgia and Carolyn Legg of Clinton; five brothers, Glen Rhyne of Clinton, Elmer R. Rhyne of Knoxville, and Jack Rhyne, Jimmy Rhyne and Danny Rhyne, all of Tazewell; five grandchildren, Scott Legg, Valerie Hull, Joseph Rhyne, Kendra Rhyne and Jonathan Rhyne; one great-grandchild, Madison Hull; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents and a sister, Nancy Lane, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Jim Hunt officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at McCarty Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Claxton.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Blanche White Peterson
Lake City resident

Blanche M. White Peterson, 77, of Lake City, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1997, at her home.

Mrs. Peterson is survived by a son, Jerry Peterson and his wife, Martia, of Bristol; a stepson, Sherwood "Woody" Peterson and his wife, Leila, of La Habra Heights, Calif.; and a sister, Lora Russell of Marlow.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, in the chapel of Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City with the Rev. Tom Byrge officiating.

Burial will follow at Leach cemetery in Lake City.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Douglas T. Ketner
Father of Oak Ridge resident

Douglas Theodore Ketner, 75, of Lady Lake, Fla., formerly of Knoxville, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1997, in Leesburg, Fla.

Mr. Ketner is survived by a daughter, Bridgette K. Ellis, and her husband, Gary, of Oak Ridge; a son, Patrick Alan Ketner, and his wife, Traci, of Franklin; and two sisters, Lola Wynn of Knoxville and Hazel Gaddis and her husband, Norman, of Durham, N.C.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at Highland Memorial cemetery in Knoxville with the Rev. Ron Ingram officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at Mann Heritage Chapel, 6200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 1900 Richmond Road, Lexington, KY 40502.

Pearl Smith Freels
Poplar Creek Baptist member

Pearl Lena Smith Freels, 89, of Marlow, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1997, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Freels was a member of Poplar Creek Baptist Church.

She was born Dec. 14, 1907, in Clinton, the daughter of Lum and Janie Liles Smith. A homemaker, she was known in her neighborhood for the flowers that she grew, her family said.

She was the widow of Charlie Freels, who died Nov. 16, 1956.

Mrs. Freels is survived by four daughters, Carol Ann Lamb and her husband, John, of Oliver Springs, Juanita Hatfield and Geraldine Gallaher and her husband, James, all of Clinton, and Jeanette Giles and her husband, Aaron, of Rocky Mount, Va.

She is also survived by six grandchildren, Scott Rutherford of Oak Ridge, Jon Giles of Nashville, Joel Giles of Richmond, Va., Daniel Rutherford and his wife, Frances, of Clinton, and Michael Gallaher and his wife, Marilyn, and Mark Gallaher and his wife, Tina, all of Knoxville; and four great-grandchildren, Steven, Christopher and Abby Gallaher, all of Knoxville, and Jacob Rutherford of Clinton.

Mrs. Freels' three brothers, Willie Smith, Charlie Smith and Walter Smith, are deceased.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Luke Kidwell officiating.

Burial will be at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary.

Sarah Wagner Burnett
Retired elementary teacher

Sarah Sue Wagner Burnett, a resident of the Oak Ridge Retirement Community, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1997, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She had been in declining health for several months.

Mrs. Burnett lived most of her life in the Del Rio community of Cocke County. She was an elementary school teacher for 36 years, from one-room schools to a consolidated elementary school where she taught for many years. Her family said she took pride in recalling the antics and accomplishments of her former students.

She received her education at Mars Hill College and East Tennessee State University.

She was a member of the 20th Century Club and the Cocke County Retired Teachers Association and was a former member of the board of Stokely Memorial Library in Newport. She was also a member of Del Rio Baptist Church.

In addition to her love of teaching, Mrs. Burnett enjoyed the management and upkeep of the ancestral Burnett home and farm in Del Rio until her illness made it necessary for her to move near her daughter in Oak Ridge.

She is survived by two daughters, Ginny Burnett Bowers, who teaches third grade at Willow Brook Elementary School, and her husband, Bob, of Oak Ridge, and Sue Burnett Holt and her husband, Steve, of Florence, Ala.; six grandchildren, Susan Bowers, Stephen Bowers and Sally Bowers, all of Oak Ridge, Chip Kisabeth of Harrisburg, Pa., and Jonathan Holt and Allison Holt of Florence; and two step-grandchildren, Kristin H. Wexler of Nashville and Ashlee Holt of Chattanooga.

Mrs. Burnett is also survived by three sisters, Ruth Stokely of Johnson City, Margaret Hazelwood of Hickory, N.C., and Mell Dillon of Jonesborough.

The funeral was to be held at 2 this afternoon, Oct. 10, in the chapel of Manes Funeral Home, 508 E. Main St., Newport. Burial was to follow at Union cemetery.

Howard Deacon Lloyd
Retired construction worker

Howard Deacon Lloyd, 83, of Clinton, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1997, at his home.

Mr. Lloyd was a retired construction worker and a member of North Clinton Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Lloyd; two daughters, Clesie Lloyd Overton and Cathy Lloyd Coley, both of Knoxville; and two sons and daughters-in-law, Clarence and Hope Lloyd of Knoxville, and Clayton and Nancy Lloyd of Clinton.

He is also survived by three sisters, Kizzie Bulkus of Las Vegas, Nev., Elizabeth Harness of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Comdeith Duncan of Huntsville; two brothers, Marion Lloyd of Norma and James C. Lloyd of Huntsville; three grandchildren, Regina Dawn Overton, William Monroe "Monty" Coley and Marcus Adam Lloyd; and by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, in the chapel of McCarty Woodhaven Funeral Home in Claxton with the Rev. Tony Wilson officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, at McCarty Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Claxton. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home chapel at 1:30.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Jane Bowling Kennerly
Retired TVA accountant

Jane Bowling Kennerly, 55, of Knoxville, died of metastatic breast cancer Monday, Sept. 29, 199, at her home.

Mrs. Kennerly began her employment with the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1979. She worked as a certified public accountant in numerous capacities related to systems, procedures and business management. Due to the cancer, she retired in 1995.

She was active in several professional organizations, including the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Association of Government Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Mrs. Kennerly was active in the Wellness Community of Knoxville, a support organization for victims of cancer and their families. She participated in many other organizations which ministered to the needs of the community and sought to improve the environment, her family said.

She was a native of Harrogate and was the daughter of Dr. Floyd E. "Jack" Bowling of Athens. Her mother, Evelyn Mars Bowling, is deceased.

She attended Tennessee Wesleyan College and the University of Tennessee where she earned bachelor's and master's degrees of art. She was awarded a doctorate of philosophy in English literature from Louisiana State University in 1977. Academic honors included Tau Beta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies and valedictorian of Middlesboro High School in Middlesboro, Ky. She was also a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority at Tennessee Wesleyan.

Early in her career, she taught at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and at UT in Knoxville.

On June 9, 1973, she married John Mauk Kennerly, originally of Washington County. He is employed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Mrs. Kennerly was a member at large of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church. She will be remembered for her humility, spirituality, compassion and caring, her husband said.

In addition to her husband and father, Mrs. Kennerly is survived by her brother, Dr. J. Michael Bowling and his wife, Dr. Markita Price Bowling, and their two sons, Alex and Eric, all of Columbia, Mo.; and by several other family members.

A reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 tonight, Oct. 2, in the chapel of Berry Funeral Home, 3704 Chapman Highway, Knoxville. A memorial service will follow at 7:30 with Dr. George Odle officiating.

William Bodell III, John Crittenden, Gary Gitschlag, William Greer, David Mauk, James Montgomery, George Roettger and Mark Roettger will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the Wellness Community, 1844 Terrace Ave., Knoxville, TN 37916; the American Cancer Society, 871 Weisgarber Road, Knoxville, TN 37909; or to the Bowling Mathematics Laboratory, Tennessee Wesleyan College, Athens, TN 37303.

John Russell Rutherford
Retired AC teacher

John Russell Rutherford, 97, of Clinton, died Monday, Sept. 15, 1997, at his home.

Mr. Rutherford was formerly a schoolteacher who retired after 42 years with the Anderson County school system. He started out at the former Clear Creek Elementary School in 1921 and also taught at Riverview, Andersonville, Melborne, Belmont, Fairview and Glen Alpine elementary schools, teaching at Glen Alpine from 1948 until he retired in May 1966.

He was born in Anderson County on Sept. 6, 1900, to Charles and Margaret Worthington Rutherford and had attended Carson-Newman College.

Mr. Rutherford was a member of Bethel Baptist Church of Clinton, where he was a Sunday school superintendent, teacher and deacon.

His wife, Cora Rutherford, and three brothers, Roy Rutherford, Virgil Rutherford and James Rutherford, are deceased.

He is survived by a daughter, Christine Wallace, and her husband, Kenneth "Reese" Wallace, of Clinton; three sons, Ray M. Rutherford and his wife, Barbara Rutherford, Dr. Kyle O. Rutherford and his wife, Ramona Rutherford, all of Knoxville, and Ben M. Rutherford and his wife, Peggy Rutherford, of Clinton; and by 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 8:30 tonight, Sept. 16, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Mark Keith officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Norris Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Building Fund at Bethel Baptist Church, 610 Bethel Road, Clinton, TN 37716.

Josephine S. Elliott
Mother of Oak Ridge resident

Josephine S. Elliott, 98, of South Knoxville, died Friday, July 24, 1998, at Asbury Acres Health Center in Knoxville.

Mrs. Elliott is survived by a daughter, Ann E. Watson of Oak Ridge; and two sons, Dick Elliott and John Elliott, both of Knoxville.

A graveside service was held Sunday, July 26, at Woodlawn cemetery, Knoxville, with the Rev. Mark Knisley officiating.

Dotson Funeral Home in Maryville handled arrangements.

Virginia C. Hopkin
Clinton resident

Virginia C. Hopkin, 61, of Clinton, died Sunday, June 21, 1998, at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville following a long illness with cancer.

She formerly worked at the Pentagon and had attained the rank of Sp-5 in the U.S. Army.

While living abroad with her husband, she was affiliated with many government officials. Her family described her as a devoted and well-respected wife, mother and grandmother who greatly loved humanity and her country.

She also contributed to cancer research at Einstein Medical Research Center in New York.

Survivors include her husband, Morem Elenbaby of Cairo, Egypt; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Heba Elenbaby and Tarek Murad, all of Cairo, and their three children, and Dr. Nivine Alenbaby and Dr. M. Sidiki of Paris, France, and their two children; and a brother, George Morrene of West Virginia and his children.

No services were held, as Mrs. Hopkin had requested.

The family asks that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the Vanderbilt Cancer Center Development Office, Suite 301, 2100 Pierce Ave., Nashville, TN 37212, attn: Linda Sack.

McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
