Kenneth W. Jennings
Lake City resident

Kenneth W. Jennings, 77, of Lake City, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

He is survived by his wife, Nevaline Vowell Jennings; a son and daughter-in-law, Benny and Helen Jennings of Caryville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Robert Hendren and Vicki and Richard Massey, all of Caryville; two brothers, Howard Jennings and Charlie Jennings of Clinton; three sisters, Lena Toress of California, Bernice Reynolds of Kansas and Reba Griffith of Clinton; and by eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral was to be held at 2 this afternoon at Fratersville Baptist Church with the Rev. David Riggs, the Rev. Howard Robbins and the Rev. Les Arwood officiating.

Burial was to follow at Leach cemetery in Lake City.

Cox-Martin Funeral Home of Lake City handled arrangements.

Morris Phillips

Morris Phillips, 85, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is handling arrangements, which were incomplete this morning.

Elmer Berkley

Elmer Berkley, 77, of Oak Ridge died this morning, Jan. 5, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of arrangements, which were incomplete this morning.

Simon Peter Hawkins
Lake City resident

Simon Peter Hawkins, 77, of Lake City, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 1997, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Hawkins is survived by his wife, Ellen Seiber Hawkins; three daughters, Mary Patterson and Bernice Foster, both of Clinton, and Pauline Bray of Knoxville; and two sons, Albert Hawkins and B.I. Hawkins, both of Lake City.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at Gravehill cemetery in New River.

The body was taken to the home of Shirley Seiber, 330 Johnson Gap Road, Clinton, where the family will receive friends tonight, Oct. 22.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lewis Emil Wernink
Oak Ridge resident

Lewis Emil Wernink, 51, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Wernink is survived by his wife, Sybil Mooney Wernink; a stepdaughter, Ann Wade of Columbia, S.C.; a sister and her husband, Jacqueline and Dean Harper of Orlando, Fla.; and a brother and his wife, Gene and Mamie Wernink of Crane, Mo.

A memorial service was to be held at noon today, Sept. 22, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Woods officiating.

Burial will be at a later date at Williston cemetery in Williston, S.C.

The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the American Cancer Society, Anderson County Unit, in care of Lee Costanzo, 103 Case Lane, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Charles Warren Presley
Retired optician

Charles Warren Presley, 77, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Presley and his wife, Charlcie Matheney Presley, owned and operated the Presley Optical Dispensary in Oak Ridge from 1971 to 1983. During this time, Mr. Presley served the state of Tennessee as a member of the board for Licensing Dispensing Opticians for several terms, and in 1983, was named Optician of the Year by the Tennessee Dispensing Opticians.

From 1944 to 1961, he was a medical technologist for Union Carbide Nuclear Division at the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant. He later managed Christenberry Optical Dispensary in Knoxville for 10 years.

A native of Putnam County, he was the son of Robert Denton and Jeanie Mae Gentry Presley of Bloomington Springs, now both deceased.

Mr. Presley served with the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1938 to 1940, assigned at Cumberland Mountain State Park. The family said he was very proud to have assisted in the building of the bridge into the park which still stands today. From 1940 to 1942, he served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant in the 181st Artillery Division.

He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. As a member of the Oak Ridge Lions Club, he assisted in providing glasses for patients with a need. When his sons were younger, he became active in the Boy Scouts of America organizations in both Oak Ridge and Clinton.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Presley is survived by two sons and their wives, Robert Winton and Louise Presley of Clinton and David Warren and Fran Presley of Germantown; and a granddaughter, Brooke Presley Ownby and her husband, Kevin, of Sevierville.

He is also survived by a sister, Jean Presley Watts; and two brothers and their wives, C. Ray and Grace Presley and Willard H. and Vivian Presley, all of Baxter.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David W. Hall officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 190 Manhattan Ave., or to the Methodist Hospital Foundation, Chaplain's Fund, 990 Oak Ridge Turnpike, both Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Juanita 'Wanda' McCord
First Assembly founding member

Juanita "Wanda" Mathes McCord, 75, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at her home after a brief illness.

An Oak Ridge resident since 1944, Mrs. McCord was a founding member of First Assembly of God.

She was born Sept. 25, 1921, in Knoxville. Mrs. McCord worked with the Knoxville Rescue Mission for many years. She enjoyed bowling, the family said.

She was the widow of Paul McCord, whom she married in 1945.

Mrs. McCord is survived by two daughters, Barbara J. Ward and Kathy L. Mabry and her husband, Tom, all of Oak Ridge; five grandchildren, Kimberly Woods and her husband, Fred, Elizabeth Ward, Kenneth Trentham, Lisa Trentham, Crystal McDaniel and her husband, John; and nine great-grandchildren, Roger Reed, Chris Reed, Samantha Elkins, Andrew Trentham, Ashley Woods, Amber McDaniel, Brittaney McDaniel, David Carr and Randell Ward.

Don Smith, Sondra Oldham, Steven Richards, Tommy Compton, Geoff Moore and I.A. Ward were considered special friends.

The funeral will be at 8 tonight, Sept. 22, in the chapel of McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. John Wiseman and the Rev. David Snodderly officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Tennessee State Veterans cemetery, Lyonsview Pike, Knoxville.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Johnny Edward Gann
Heiskell resident

Johnny Edward Gann, 65, of Heiskell, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Gann is survived by his wife, Louise Mullins Gann; a daughter, Deanna Galloway of Heiskell; two sons, Ronnie Gann of Nashville and Robin Gann and his wife, Zina, of White Bluff; five sisters, Dorothy LaTour of Southfield, Mich., Patricia Lawson and Nancy Vaughn, both of Kingston Springs, Brenda Ammons of Franklin and Linda Hollis of Nashville; and two brothers, Jack Gann of Heiskell and Harold Gann of Branson, Mo.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Ed Nelson and the Rev. Ed Clark officiating.

Burial will follow with full military honors at Oak Grove cemetery in Lake City.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the funeral home.

Mildred Mae Batchelor
Former Oak Ridge resident

Mildred Mae Batchelor, 77, of Cleveland, died Sunday morning, Sept. 21, 1997, at a Knoxville hospital.

Mrs. Batchelor was a former resident of Oak Ridge and worked on the Manhattan Project from 1944 to 1945.

She was a graduate of Tennessee Technological University and the daughter of Jobe and Peggy Morgan, both now deceased.

Mrs. Batchelor was past president of the Bradley County Medical Auxiliary and past president of the state of Tennessee Medical Auxiliary. She was also past chairman of the Bradley County Library Board, past chairman of Community Concert Series and a member of Beta Sigma Phi, Laurete Chapter. She was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church in Cleveland.

She was a retired office manager for her husband, Dr. Marvin R. Batchelor, who survives her.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Batchelor is survived by two sons, Dr. Donald B. Batchelor and his wife, Elizabeth, of Oak Ridge, and Dr. Doug Batchelor and his wife, Elaine, of Knoxville; five grandchildren, Betsy Hondorf, Drew Batchelor, Justina Batchelor, Brooke Batchelor and Tessa Batchelor; a great-grandson, Loki Hondorf; and a niece and a nephew, Barbara Jane Morgan and Joe Morgan.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Cleveland with the Rev. Jackson P. Weikel officiating.

Burial will follow at Hilcrest Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Lars Hondorf, Hal Carter, Joe Moore, Dr. William R. Proffitt, Sam Fair and Sonny Batchelor. Honorary pallbearers are Doug Fuller, Gus Lippard, Flavis Casson and Tom Hopper.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 tonight, Sept. 22, at Grissom Funeral Home, 3010 N. Ocoee St., Cleveland.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Children's Missions Program at Broad Street United Methodist Church or to Friends of the Library.

John Burgess Lingerfelt
Retired DOE nuclear engineer

John Burgess Lingerfelt, 72, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, May 19, 1998, at home following a long illness.

Mr. Lingerfelt, a licensed professional engineer, retired in 1985 from the Department of Energy. He had been a safety engineer with DOE and its predecessor agencies since 1964.

He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and the Georgia Institute of Technology. He was a commissioned naval aviator during and after World War II.

He was born in Elizabethton on Sept. 29, 1925, the son of Edmund Richard and Bertie Vesta Adams Lingerfelt.

Mr. Lingerfelt was the senior design engineer on the first nuclear submarines built by Westinghouse Corp. and was the on-site Westinghouse engineer at the shipyard during the final testing and commissioning of the first three nuclear submarines.

He was the electrical and control systems supervisor responsible for the flight systems installed in the first booster stage of the Saturn V rocket used for the United States' first moon flights.

Mr. Lingerfelt had been an avid gardener and pilot, having owned several small aircraft over the years. He was an amateur radio operator and always enjoyed his friends in the Oak Ridge Amateur Radio Club, his family said.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara Kidd Lingerfelt; a son, Paul Neil Lingerfelt; three sisters, Elizabeth Williams, Helen Benson and Shirley Reichenbach; and several nieces and nephews.

His elder son, Eric Scott Lingerfelt, and a sister, Marybelle Jackson, died earlier.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at Anderson County Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

Friends may call at the family home at their convenience.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Boys Club of Oak Ridge, P.O. Box 4021, Oak Ridge, TN 37831, or to the Oak Ridge Public Library, 1401 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Joyce Kelly Hamric
Retired Linden, Woodland teacher

Joyce Kelly Hamric, 77, of Lebanon, Tenn., died Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, at Baptist Hospital in Nashville.

Mrs. Hamric was an Oak Ridge resident for 52 years. She taught for 40 years, 39 in Oak Ridge, beginning at Linden School and retiring in 1986 from Woodland School. She was active in the Oak Ridge Retired Teachers Association for several years.

She was born in Pikeville, Tenn., on Jan. 5, 1921, the daughter of Harry A. and Juanita Chisam Kelly. Mrs. Hamric grew up in Bridgeport, Ala. Her formal education included Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

She was a violinist and was one of the first members of the Oak Ridge Symphony. She and her husband, Sam Hamric, were charter members of Kern Memorial United Methodist Church. Later, she joined First United Methodist Church.

Her husband died April 14, 1981. Mrs. Hamric had made her home in Lebanon since 1995 and was a member of First United Methodist Church there.

She is survived by a daughter, Judy Wyatt, and her husband, James, of Lebanon, Tenn.; a son, Kelly Hamric and his wife, Betsy, of Germantown; a brother, Harry Lynn Kelly and his wife, Mary, of Crossville; grandchildren, Tracy Wyatt and his wife, Sarah, Joseph Wyatt and April, Dana and Todd Hamric; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Ken Henderlight officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 tonight, Feb. 24, at the mortuary.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 4669, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-4669.
