SCOTT, ROBERT W. (BOB), JR., a native of Fayetteville and resident of Gray, died Monday (Oct. 23, 2006) after an extended illness. He was 67. Mr. Scott was a salesman with Sears Inc. for 35 years. During his working years and after his retirement, he held a number of varied and unique jobs including grocer, meat cutter, cast member of Bob Barker’s "Price is Right" traveling show, dairy products entrepreneur, parking lot artist, newspaper deliverer and restaurant entrepreneur. At 16 years of age, he enlisted in the Tennessee National Guard. He served his country for 43 years, three months and 19 days in active and reserve duty. Based upon available records, this is the longest tenure of service for a soldier in the Tennessee National Guard. Mr. Scott was also a member of the Johnson City/Washington County Commission and the Washington County Planning Commission. Funeral services were held Friday in the sanctuary of Boones Creek Christian Church with David Clark and Tom Stokes officiating. He was buried in Mountain Home National cemetery. WILSON, CLARA GILL, of Fayetteville, died Wednesday (Oct. 25, 2006) at Donalson Care Center. She was 92. Mrs. Wilson worked as a spinner in a textile factory for several years before her retirement. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by her daughter, Ann Wilson Pigg. She is survived by her son, Tommy (Eva) Wilson of Fayetteville; son-in-law, Joe Mack Pigg; grandchildren, John Mark Pigg of Fayetteville, Stephen Pigg and Glenda Smith of Murfreesboro; and six great-grandchildren. Graveside services for Mrs. Wilson were Friday afternoon at the Mulberry cemetery. Lynchburg Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

YOUNG, FLOYD, of Fayetteville died Saturday morning (Oct. 28, 2006) in the Huntsville Hospital. He was 81. A native of Lincoln County, he was the son of the late Franklin and Alice Scott Young. Mr. Young was retired from Redstone Arsenal, an Army veteran of World War II and a former member of the Prospect Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Melba Jo Williamson Young; two daughters, Sherri Lynn Womack and Myra Dickey, both of Fayetteville; one sister, Ruth Vaughn of Fayetteville; two brothers, Thomas L. Young and the Rev. Johnny T. Young, both of Fayetteville; four grandchildren, Hayley Evans, Patrick Harwell, Clint Dickey and Jordan Dickey; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Young were conducted Monday afternoon at Higgins Funeral Home with the Revs. Charles Hammons and Barney Rickman officiating. Burial followed in the Prospect cemetery. BEENE, WILLIAM M., 85 a resident of Athens, Ala., died Tuesday (October 17, 2006) at his residence. Graveside services were held Thursday at Gatlin cemetery. Ardmore Memorial Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

BROWN, LETHA HENDERSON, 87, of North High, Petersburg, died Tuesday night (Oct. 17, 2006) in Huntsville Hospital. She was a native of Lincoln County and the daughter of the late Holbert and Nanny Moorehead Henderson. Mrs. Brown was a dedicated mother, homemaker and seamstress. She was a member of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters, Debbie (Jack) Richardson of Petersburg and Nancy (Bobby) Phelps of Kelso; three sons, Joey (Nellie) Brown of Athens, Ala., Jim (Charlotte) Brown of the Lincoln Community and Randy (Bridget) Brown of the Park City Community; sister, Laura McKin of W. Palm Beach, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers, Leman, Melvin and Bealie Henderson; sisters, Stella Osborne and Lurlene King. FERGUSON, BARBARA JEAN HOWELL, age 65, of Lincoln Road, died Saturday morning (Oct. 21, 2006) at her residence. She was a native of Lincoln County and a daughter of the late Thomas Marion and Ruby Flynt Howell. She was employed as a LPN and pharmacy tech and was a member of the Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband, William D. Ferguson of Fayetteville; a daughter, Mary Lisa Zendler of Huntsville; a son, Gregory Alan Ferguson of Winchester; three grandchildren; two sisters, Sue and Joan Howell, both of Fayetteville; and three brothers, Randy, Barry and Kirt Howell, all of Fayetteville. NICHOLS, JOYCE KOONCE, age 68, of Rebecca West Road, died Friday afternoon (Oct. 20, 2006) in Lincoln Medical Center. She was a native of Lincoln County and a daughter of the late Claude Lewis and Flora Mae Davis Koonce. She was a farmer and a horse groomer and a member of Kirkland Baptist Church. She is survived by three sons, John Nichols of Fayetteville, "Pete" Bates of Fayetteville and Pat Bates of Fayetteville; a sister, Rosie Lee Frame of Fayetteville; a brother, Lewis Wilburn Koonce of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren, Dejay, Rebecca and Tamra Bates, Mackenzie, Adam, Ali, and RJ Brislin, all of Fayetteville. REESE, SARAH H., 69, a resident of Morgan Street, Lynchburg, died Saturday (Oct. 21, 2006) at Bedford County Nursing Home. She was a native of Franklin County. SKIPPER, WALLACE E., of Ashton Circle, Fayetteville, died Wednesday (Oct. 18, 2006) at his residence. A native of Huntingdon County, Pa., he was the son of the late Sylvia Leona Dell and Martin L. Skipper and the husband of Dauna Louise Leonard Skipper, who survives. Mr. Skipper was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Army. In addition to his wife, Mr. Skipper is survived by two daughters, Vickie L. Stubblefield of Huntsville, Ala., and Robin E. Harned of Tallahassee, Fla.; one son, Michael B. Skipper of Okeechobee, Fla.; two sisters, Irene Brungard of Huntingdon County, Pa., and Delores Bruce of Akron, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. THOMPSON, JIMMY M., age 73, of Clayton Acres Circle, died Saturday evening (Oct. 21, 2006) at Lincoln Medical Center. He was a native of Eastland County, Texas, son of the late Newton O. and Mille Elzie Seaborne Thompson. He was employed as a painting and repair contractor and retired from the USPS. He was a member of the VFW and Elks. Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Susan Thompson of Fayetteville; two brothers, L.O. Thompson of Abilene, Texas, and Lawton Thompson of Shelbyville, Texas; a sister, Wanda Thomas of Eastland, Texas; a nephew, James Thompson of Longview, Texas; and several other nieces and nephews. CHEATHAM, NELDA K., 82, of South Fishing Ford Road, Petersburg, died Sunday morning (Nov. 26, 2006) in Lincoln Skill Care. She was a native of Giles County, a daughter of the late David Hollins and Grace Collins Kaiser. Mrs. Cheatham was employed as a teacher in Giles County and was a member of the Church of Christ, attending both Robertson Fork in Lynnville/Blue Creek and East Hill in Pulaski. Survivors include a son, Terry Kaiser Cheatham of Petersburg; a grandson, Robert Keath Brown of Orlando; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Allen Cheatham, who passed away in 1987; a son, Ted Cheatham, who passed away in 2001; and a grandson, Richard F. Brown, who passed away in 2001. RAYBON, NELLIE OREVA, 71, of Molino Road, Fayetteville, died Tuesday (Nov. 21, 2006) at her residence. She was a native of Lincoln County and the daughter of the late Henry and Gladys Fennel Hardin. Mrs. Raybon retired after 30 years of service as a dietary technician at Lincoln Medical Center. She was a member of the St. John AME Church at Mulberry. She is survived by five daughters, Donna Raybon of Fayetteville, Alethea and Patrick Shirley and Sonya Mastin of Huntsville Ala., Sherry and Shawn Mastin of Chattanooga, Tonya and Collier Mastin Jr., of Nashville; brothers, William Edward and Ruth Hardin, M.C. and Emma Hardin of Fayetteville, Walter and Zorella Hardin of Dayton, Ohio and James and Frances Moorehead of Mulberry; seven grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. ROBERTS, MARY LOU ARRICK, 86, of Huntland, died Sunday (Nov. 19, 2006) at her daughter�s home in Florida. She was the daughter of the late Harrison and Edna Robertson Roberts and was a cosmetology instructor at the Fayetteville Beauty School. Survivors include one daughter, Maneline Smith and husband, Bill, of Destin, Fla.; one brother, Arnold Arrick and wife, Ruby, of Huntland; three grandchildren, Richard Joseph Smith of Birmingham, Cassandra Darlene Smith of Fairfax, Va., and Sybil Dawn Smith of Palo Alto, Calif.; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. YOUNG, DR. RICHARD WILSON, age 73, of Louisville, formerly of Fayetteville, died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2006) in Mitchell-Hollingsworth Nursing Home In Florence, Ala. He was a native of Lincoln County and the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Richard Wilson Young, Sr. Dr. Young was a retired orthopedic surgeon, veteran of the U. S. Navy and a member of the Church of Christ. Priscilla Christine Deal Ashby, 81, of Fayetteville, died Sunday (Feb. 15, 2009) at Lincoln Care Center. She was a native of Moore County and the daughter of the late Oscar Andrew and Susie Fanning Deal. Mrs. Ashby was a homemaker and a member of the North Side Church of Christ. Survivors include her husband, William C. Ashby of Fayetteville; daughter, Jo Ann Purvis and husband, John, of LaBelle, Fla.; two sisters, Alline Groce of Fayetteville and Peggy Luna of Alabama; one brother, Joe Deal and wife, Brenda, of Huntsville, Ala.; grandchildren, Deirdre Purvis and husband, Doug, of LaBelle and Timothy E. Charlie Hoyt Bell, 81, of Fayetteville, died Sunday morning (Feb. 15, 2009) at Lincoln Medical Center. A son of the late Tommy Washington and Martha Grizzle Bell, he was a native of Hill County, Texas, owned several restaurants throughout his life and was a member of Park City Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Sallie Captola Rivers Bell; sons, Ron Bell and wife, Rhonda, of Alma, AR, A. Roy Bell of Bentonville, AR, and Bill Armstrong and wife, Theresa, of Huntsville; daughter, Delores Wadley and husband, Bill, of Lewisburg; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. There will be no formal services or visitation at the funeral home. Higgins Funeral Home is serving the family.

James (Bubby/Bubba) Burgess, 22, of New Market, Ala., died Sunday (Feb. 8, 2009) at his residence. Mr. Burgess was a mechanic. Vivian Henderson Hodge, 80, of Fayetteville, died Wednesday (Feb. 11, 2009) in Lincoln Medical Center. She was a native of Lincoln County and the daughter of the late Vernon and Nellie Scruggs Henderson. Mrs. Hodge was a realtor and a member of the Highland United Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Donna Lewter and Rhonda Lowman, both of Fayetteville; two granddaughters, Jennifer Lewter Jenkins of Ardmore, Ala., and Carla Lineberger of Fayetteville; one grandson, Jeff Dugger of Fayetteville; and one sister, Carol Tunstill of Fayetteville. Miss Margaret Catherine Jennings, age 100, of Fayetteville, died Sunday (Feb. 15, 2009) at Lincoln Medical Center. She was a native of Lincoln County and the daughter of the late Claude C. and Belle Pickett Jennings. Miss Jennings was a retired school teacher and a member of the Washington Street Church of Christ. Survivors include two nieces, Charlotte Forrester of Fayetteville and Betty Lou Talley of Marshall County, and several great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Albin Jennings. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at Higgins Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Rose Hill cemetery. Nira June Hall Moorehead, 75, of Elora, died Thursday evening (Feb. 12, 2009) at Lincoln Medical Center. She was a native of Lincoln County and the daughter of the late Edward and Ina Bryant Hall. Mrs. Moorehead was retired from Lee Manufacturing and was a member of the Elora Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Delilah Dunn of Tullahoma and Rhonda Mines of Whitwell; two sons, Dwain Moorehead of Murfreesboro and Martie Moorehead of Elora; one brother, Ronnie Hall of Huntland; 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at Higgins Funeral Home with Bro. Ray West officiating. Burial followed in Elora cemetery beside her husband, James Elbert Moorehead. Nancy Marie (Honey) Shears, 70, of Howell Hill Road, Flintville, died Tuesday evening (Feb. 10, 2009) in the Lincoln Medical Center. Mrs. Shears was a native of Lincoln County, the daughter of the late James Odie and Nancy Ellen Hensley Honey, Sr. She was a retired Certified Nursing Tech. She worked for Donalson Care Center for 25 years. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Shears was preceded in death by a daughter, Terry Lavone Shears; three sisters, Mary Smith, Kathleen Williams and Betty Jennings. She is survived by her husband, Dwain P. Shears, Sr., of Flintville; three daughters, Vicki Kight and husband, Michael of Unionville, Darlene Locke and husband, Terry, of Fayetteville and Melissa Flowe and husband, Curtis of Kelso; a son, Dwain P. Shears, Jr., of Unionville; two sisters, Nadine Rozar of Fayetteville and Doris Jennings of Indiana; a brother, James Odie Honey, Jr., of Taft; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Thursday in the chapel of the Gallant-Riverview Funeral Home with Bro. Johnny Clardy officiating. Burial will follow at a later date. Dane Wiser, 47, a resident of Fayetteville, died Friday morning (Feb. 13, 2009) in Huntsville Hospital. A native of Lewisburg and longtime resident of Fayetteville, he was the son of Thomas "Tom" Edward and Reba Richardson Wiser, who survive. He owned Volunteer Machine and Tool where he was a machinist. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Anna Ophelia Wiser, and grandparents, William Loyd and Tommie Edna Richardson. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Brenda Wiser of Fayetteville; daughters, Amanda Marie Sawyers and husband, Brian, of Fort Hood, Texas, Crystal Leann Hollis, Dana Rose Ables and husband, Terry, and Reba Janel Wiser, all of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Thomas Bradley Sanders, Kevin Dee Hollis, III, and Ryan Cole Ables, all of Fayetteville; brothers, Kipp Patrick Wiser and wife, Judy, and Edward Bret Wiser, all of Fayetteville; sister, Abbe Wynn Walden of Flintville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at Higgins Funeral Home with the Rev. Milton Martin and Bobby Bankston officiating. Interment icon followed in Macedonia cemetery. Pallbearers were Phillip Sanders, Andy Cline, Bobby Bankston, Glen Leavers, Ricky Jones and Jeff Cates. Higgins Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Jerry C. Adams, 65, of Toney, Ala., died Friday (Feb. 12, 2010) at his residence. A memorial service will be announced later. Hazel Green Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mary Lorene Blakely, 93, of Toney, Ala., died Sunday (Feb. 14, 2010) at Athens-Limestone Hospital in Athens, Ala. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home with interment icon in Gatlin cemetery, Ardmore, Ala. Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Phillip Lee Brown, 59, of Hazel Green, Ala., died Monday (Feb. 8, 2010) at his residence. Funeral services were held Monday in Thayer, Mo. Burial was in Thayer cemetery. Hazel Green Funeral Home assisted the family.

Gary Cole, 72, a resident of Fayetteville, died Tuesday (Jan. 26, 20100) at the Centennial Medical Center. Mr. Cole was a native of Glassport, Pa., the son of the late Ralph and Nettie Bush Cole. He worked for the Copperweld Corporation for 42 years and before retirement was materials manager there. He was an active member of the Fayetteville Kiwanis and a member of the Stephen Bayard Lodge #526 of the Order of the Masons. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lyle Cole, and a sister, Betty Waugh. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Cole of Fayetteville; daughter, Tracy Smotherman of Shelbyville; son, Gregory Cole of Gallatin; grandchildren, Garret, Jesse, Cole Smotherman; sisters, Nancy Jacobs of Port Vuew, Pa., Donna Civello of Fredericksburg, Va., Doris Fornel of Port Vuew, Pa.; brothers, Clayton Cole of McKeesport, Pa., John Cole of State College, Pa., and Theodore Cole of Scottsdale, Ariz. Funeral services were conducted Friday (Jan. 29, 2010) in the chapel of the Gallant-Riverview Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Ward officiating. Carl Duke Copeland, 97, a long-time resident of Lynchburg, died on Thursday (Feb. 11, 2010) at Harton Medical Center in Tullahoma. He was born in the Smithland community of Lincoln County and was a lifelong resident of Lincoln and Moore counties. He was a retired local merchant and owned and operated Copeland's Dry Goods store on the north side of the square in Lynchburg for thirty-eight years. Carl was very active in both his community and church and had a long history of service. His life story and genealogy have been featured in the Moore County Review. He was a long-time active member of the Lynchburg First United Methodist Church. One of his main hobbies was fishing at which he was very successful and enjoyed well into his latter years of life. A picture of him along with a neighbor, each holding a string of fish caught below Pickwick Dam, appeared in the 1963 Sports Afield Fishing Annual. A copy of this picture hangs today inside and above the entrance of the Nashville Bass Pro Shop. He was the oldest member of the Copeland family and one of the oldest men in Moore County. He enjoyed his later years at the Moore County Senior Citizens Center associating with his many friends and playing Rook. Carl was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Evelyn Welsh Copeland; his parents, Lon and Victoria Ann Copeland of Flintville; five brothers; four sisters; daughter-in-law, Sue (Tom) Copeland; and many friends, relatives, and former fishing partners. He is survived by one son, Tom, of Murfreesboro; one daughter, Betty (Nelson) Walker, of Niceville, Fla.; two grandchildren, Connie (David) Richardson of Niceville, Fla., and Cathy (Tim) Ellison of Geneva, Ala.; five great-grandsons, Dillon, Dalton and D.J. Richardson and Eli and Keith Ellison; and one great-granddaughter, Loretta Ellison. Funeral services were conducted in the Jennings Moore-Cortner Chapel Sunday afternoon and officiated by the Rev. Bill Mulroy of the Lynchburg First United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Lynchburg cemetery. Pallbearers were Tim Ellison, David Richardson, John T. Bobo, Bob Bobo, Richard Bobo and David Bobo. Honorary pallbearers were Ray Benderman, E.C. Keel and Ray McEwen. Jennings Moore-Cortner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

James G. Daves, 88, of Murfreesboro, died Sunday (Feb. 14, 2010) at Middle Tennessee Medical Center. He was born in Petersburg to the late Benjamin Floyd and Sarah Goggins Smythe Daves and was a member of the Petersburg First Baptist Church. He worked with the Tennessee DOT and was a WWII veteran of the United States Navy and crew of LST 681. Mr. Daves is survived by his wife, Sara Daves; son, James Daves of Golden, Okla.; daughter, Carolyn Hix of Murfreesboro; brother, John Daves of Nashville; five grandchildren, Stephen Daves, Tracy McKee, Jeffrey Hix, Michael McRorie and Jacob Daves; four great-grandchildren. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday from 10 am to noon at Murfreesboro Funeral Home. Graveside service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Old Orchard cemetery in Petersburg.
