Shelby Max Smith, 50, a native of Lincoln County, died suddenly in his home Sunday (Dec. 12, 2010). He made his home in Indianapolis, Ind., was an electrician and did home restoration. He was a former member of the West End Baptist Church. He is survived by and beloved by three sisters and one brother, Kathie (Bob), Kaye, Terry (Kim), Jeana (Kolan); two nephews; and five nieces, Bryan (Anne), Brandi (Jessie), Megan (Nathan), Tonya (Randy), Melissa, Ken and Brooke; three great-nieces, Cassie, Karla and Brooke. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Stateline cemetery with Kenneth Hobbs officiating. Higgins Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Leon W. Sullenger, 82, of Petersburg, died Wednesday (Dec. 15, 2010) at his residence. He was a native of Lincoln County, the son of the late Calvin Sullenger and Vesta Ward Sullenger Norman Mann. He was a die setter and foreman at Amana and a veteran of the United States Army. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Iva Frances Brewer, and sister, Susie Green. Survivors include daughters, Carolyn Limbaugh and Billie Sullenger, both of Lynchburg, Christy Johnson of Murfreesboro; sister, Calvina Little of Albertville, Ala.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and special friend, Lynette Mitchell. Memorial services will be conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the Gallant-Riverview Funeral Home with the Rev. Sonny Moore officiating. Doris Thrasher, 72, a resident of Fayetteville, died Thursday (Dec. 16, 2010) at Huntsville Hospital. She was a native of Lincoln County, the daughter of the late Johnny and Linda Ruth Medley Daniel. She was a correction officer for the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandsons, Wade Allen Casey and Daniel Wayne Phillips. Survivors include her husband, Jerry Thrasher of Fayetteville; daughters, Faye and Bobby Poteete, Terrie Lynn and Roark Phillips, all of Fayetteville; son, Jerry Wayne and Donna Thrasher of Fayetteville; grandchildren, B.J. & Anna Casey and Brandi Phillips; great-grandchildren, Victoria Casey, Bryson Casey, Cody Casey and Carver Phillips. Funeral services were conducted Monday morning in the chapel of the Gallant-Riverview Funeral Home with Bro. Willard Medley and Bro. Don Schultz officiating. Lorene "Mama Rene" Walker, 93, of the Walnut Grove Community, New Market, Ala., died Sunday (Dec. 12, 2010) at the Donalson Care Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at the Hazel Green Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at the Concord cemetery. Hazel Green Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

JoAnn Pruitt Williams, 74, a resident of Murfreesboro, formerly of Fayetteville, died Sunday (Dec. 19, 2010) at her residence. She was the daughter of the late William Theo and Neva Mae Shelton and a member of the Christ Community Church. She was preceded in death by sons, Terry and Troy Roberts; brothers, Kenneth, Gene, Charles, Chester and Elvis Pruitt; and one sister, Vernell Pogue. Survivors include a daughter, Lana Bradford of Murfreesboro; grandchildren, Austin Bradford of Murfreesboro, Clint and Kurt Roberts, both of Fayetteville; sister, Dorothy Enoch of Mayfield, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 12 noon at Higgins Funeral Home with Bro. Harold Miller and the Rev. Kirk Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Lincoln cemetery. Judy Young Wolkowski, 61, a resident of Fayetteville, died Saturday morning (Dec. 18, 2010) at Lincoln Medical Center. A daughter of the late Foy D. Reeves Young and Thomas L. Young, who survives, she was a native of Lincoln County and employed with Fayetteville Medical Associates. Survivors, in addition to her father, include her daughter, Jennifer C. Buchanan of Fayetteville, and grandchildren, Chase and Chance Hernandez. Funeral services were conducted at Higgins Funeral Home on Monday evening with the Rev. Ennis Hyman officiating. Virginia Bafford, 85, of Toney, Ala., died Thursday (Dec. 23, 2010) at a local hospital. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Hazel Green Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mike Clark officiating. Burial followed in Stateline cemetery. Kenneth Lee Carver, 74, of Fayetteville, died Sunday morning (Dec. 26, 2010) at Lincoln Medical Center. A son of the late Hulen L. and Edith Brown Carver, he was a native of Carroll County, formerly employed as a body shop manager with Hansen Chrysler and a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Stevenson Carver of Fayetteville; daughters, Brenda Carver and Debbie Ann Carver; two grandchildren; sisters, June Storie of Nashville, Debbie Mamula of Hammond, Ind., and Anna Long of Calumet City, Ill.; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Nashville. There will be no visitation at the funeral home prior to services. Clay Cross, 75, a resident of Fayetteville, died Friday evening (Dec. 24, 2010) at Lincoln Medical Center. A son of the late Morris and Pearl Lewter Cross, he was a native of Lincoln County. He lived most of his adult life in Aberdeen, MS where he was a retired medical technologist with Aberdeen Monroe County Hospital. Mr. Cross was an Air Force veteran and a member of the Church of God. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Peggy Yarbrough, Frank Wendell Cross, Thomas Cross and Shields Cross. Survivors include his wife, Ginger Nell Cross; daughters, Lawanna Hale and husband, John, Cindy Miles and husband, Mike, and Kim Cross; son, Eric Cross; grandchildren Heather McCormick and husband, Jason, Andrea Chiaudano and husband, Deston, Rachel Hale, Destiny, Mary, Maddux and Tyler Cross; great-grandchildren, Cailyn and Reed McCormick; and siblings Joyce Smith of Ardmore, Faye Mann of Fayetteville, Billy Cross of Hamilton, MS, Joe Cross of Perkin, Ill., Charlie Cross of Maryville, Ind., Geneva Edwards of Roan Mountain, Ruth Caudill of Louisville, Ky., and Martha Nell Black of Lima, Ohio. John Everett, 84, a resident of Hazel Green, Ala., died Wednesday (Dec. 22, 2010) at a local hospital. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday from 5 until 7 p.m. at Hazel Green Funeral Chapel with the funeral service to follow at 7 p.m. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Highland cemetery in Ft. Ruth I. Hall, 81, of Kelso, died Saturday morning (Dec. 25, 2010) at her residence. A native of Newbern and the daughter of the late Jess and Maude Todd Dunivant, she was employed by Zayre & Woolworth. Survivors include her daughters, Mary Cunningham and husband, John, of Kelso and Linda Wilkerson of Smyrna, and four grandchildren. Graveside funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at Higgins Cedar Hills Memorial Gardens with Bro. Craig Clemons officiating. She was buried beside her husband, J.B. Hall. Mabel Owen Kidd Hambrick, 94, of Fayetteville, died Monday (Dec. 20, 2010) at Donalson Care Center. She was a native of Lincoln County and the daughter of the late Carl Marcus and Carrie Lou Harris Owen. She was a former employee of Serbin Fashions and a member of the Methodist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Locker and husband, Loyd, Helen Cothren and Owena Kidd, all of Fayetteville; 16 grandchildren, Cindy Britton, Vickie Nixon, Eddie Smith, Tammy McAnally, Natalie Norwood, Anthony Cothren, Lana Mason, Rebecca Hudson, Dana Ertler, Lynn Cothren and Kristy Smith; 16 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Emily Sowell. James H. Mason, 74, of Hazel Green, Ala., died Wednesday (Dec. 22, 2010) at his residence. Mr. Mason was a native of Madison County, Ala., the son of the late Joe and Lillie Mae Rogers Mason. He was a carpenter and cabinetmaker, a Navy veteran and a member of the Friendship Stateline Freewill Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Myrtis Mason of Hazel Green; daughters, Debbie and Roger Teague of Taft, Donna and Curtis Dycus of Hazel Green; sons, Charles Wayne Mason, James and Jovonda Brannon, Dennis Brannon, all of Hazel Green; aunts, Elsie Rogers of Huntsville and Ailene Jones of Fayetteville; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several cousins. James L. McKinney, 83, of Fayetteville, died Saturday evening (Dec. 11, 2010) surrounded by his family at Lincoln Care Center. A son of the late James O. and Ruth Towry McKinney, he was a native of Fayetteville, a retired airline pilot and a veteran of the US Army. Survivors include his wife, Norma McKinney of Fayetteville; daughters, Ann Marie Nobes and husband, Brian, of Kingston Springs, and Linda Archer and husband, Billy, of Panama City Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, James Cole Archer and wife, Mallory, of Panama City, Fla., Alicia Jimenez and husband, Derek, of Jacksonville, Fla., Chris Nobes, Derek Nobes, Ethan Nobes and Jared Nobes, all of Kingston Springs; great-grandson, James Avery Archer of Panama City; niece, Vickie Hines of Nashville; and nephew, Larry Hines of Smyrna. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Sharon Frundle, and sister, Juell Hines. Billy Joe Rich, 69, of Ardmore, Ala., died Wednesday (Dec. 22, 2010) at his home in Ardmore, Ala. H.L. Smith, Jr., 79, of Ardmore, Ala., died Sunday (Dec. 26, 2010) at Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville, Ala. Charlene Bonner, 56, of Fayetteville, died Monday (Jan 3, 2011) at Lincoln Medical Center. Mrs. Bonner was a native of Lincoln County, the daughter of the late Raymond "Bud" Brown and Opal Lee Pullen Howard, Jr. She was a homemaker and a member of the St. Paul AME Church. Survivors include her husband, Randy Bonner of Fayetteville; daughters, Sarah Kirby and Kathlene Fox, both of Fayetteville; sons, William (Sonya) T. Fox, Jr., and Thomas Rashon Fox, both of Fayetteville; sisters, Ruby Thomison of Fayetteville and Cherry Ann Kibble of St. Louis, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; devoted friend, Kenneth "Feet" Jones; and devoted auntie/mother, Fannie Buchanan. Charles F. Dickey of Springfield died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2011) at his residence. He was 75. A native of Lincoln County, he was the son of the late John Albert and Ruth Jane Nix Dickey. He was a truck driver and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Funeral services were conducted Saturday morning in the chapel of the Gallant-Riverview Funeral Home. Burial followed in Kelso cemetery. Levoid Edmonson of Lewisburg died Saturday (Jan. 1, 2011) at the Lincoln Care Center. He was 40. Mr. Edmonson was a native of Lincoln Co., and the son of Barbara Edmonson, who survives, and the late Thomas March. He worked for Goodman and was a member of the St. Paul AME Church. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Sandy Edmonson; daughter, Amya Edmonson; sisters, Zennis March, Toi March, Natasha Edmonson, and Lucynthia Powell; brother, Thomas March, Jr.; and nephews, Tavis Malone, Tyler Edmonson and Shaun Powell; father-in-law, Charlie B. Allen; mother-in-law, Jane Allen; brother-in-law, Lee Allen, and a host of other family and friends. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at the St. Paul A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Anthony Thomas officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant View cemetery. Family and friends gathered Friday evening for a meal and visitation at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Arthur Clair (Trip) Elder, III, a native of Fayetteville, victoriously and peacefully left this life on Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2011). Tripp was a soul winner and a true servant of Christ. As a young man, he was an Eagle Scout and received the God and Country Award. He graduated in 1970 from the University of Tennessee with a degree in marketing management. He accepted Christ as his Savior in 1974 at First Baptist Church in Ft. Smith, Ark. Tripp served on the staff at First Baptist as business administrator for 11 years. Tripp spent the remainder of his career working in marketing. He is survived by his wife, Carolynn Poythress Elder, and two daughters, Amanda Elder Silvers and Jessica Elder Millard, and his mother, Norma Carr McKinney of Fayetteville. He loved his sons-in-law, Kevin Silvers and Jeff Millard. He has four grandchildren who love and served their Papa - Neely Elizabeth and Emma Clair Millard, and Ava Clair and Elijah Creed Silvers. He leaves behind precious family, friends, and many he led to Christ. A tribute to honor Tripp was held Saturday afternoon at East Rogersville Baptist Church. In honor of his servant's heart, contributions can be made in memory to Rogersville First United Methodist Church Manna Kitchen, East Rogersville Baptist Church Awana program, the Hawkins County Board of Education Family Resource Center, or the Baptist Men of First Baptist Church. Woodrow Wilson Fanning, 93, a resident of Cleveland, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2011) following a brief illness. Born in Fayetteville to the late William and Ellie Jeffries Fanning, he was the youngest of 14 children. After retirement, he moved to Cleveland, where he resided with his wife until his death. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Irene Reynolds Fanning; three children, Sarah Fanning of Sedona, Ariz., Dr. David Fanning of Memphis and Dianne Jeffries of Kingsport; three grandchildren, Alaina Fanning, Alex Willey and Aaron Willey; and many nieces and nephews. Ettie Lucille Cash Haney of the Lincoln County died Thursday evening (Jan. 6, 2011) at Lincoln Medical Center. She was 89. The daughter of the late Jessie Dean and Ettie Viola Stevenson Cash, she was a native of Lincoln County, a homemaker, and a member of the Grace Falls Church. Survivors include daughters Brenda Cowell and husband Tommy of Nashville, Denise Ogburn of Fayetteville, son Darrell Haney and wife Tammy of Fayetteville, sister Ruth Tucker, grandchildren Kim Scott and husband Kevin, Dee Moss and husband Scotty, Brent Ogburn, Aja Murray, Christy Haney, Matt Haney and wife Christi, great-grandchildren Dylan and Grayson Scott, Passion Rumbaugh, Anna and Olivia Ogburn, Hunter and Kaelinn Trom, and Carson Haney, and sister-in-law Carol Cash. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at Higgins Funeral Home with Darrell Haney and Ryan Tate officiating. Burial followed in Lincoln cemetery beside her late husband, Earl Haney. The Rev. Aubrey Lee Knois Sr., of Lewisburg, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2011) in Lewisburg. He was 80. Rev. Knois was born in Bedford County and was a son of the late Wilkie D. and Alta Mai Wilson Knois. He was a master sergeant in the U.S. Army, having retired after 21 years of serving in both the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War and being stationed in Germany. After service, he became an electrical design engineer and later entered the ministry. Rev. Knois was presently the senior minister at Berean Baptist Church in Lewisburg, and during his 32 years in the ministry pastored in Marshall and Lincoln counties. In addition to his parents, Rev. Knois was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Wilkie Knois, who died in 1958, a sister and four brothers. Rev. Knois is survived by his wife, Mary Evelyn Knois of Lewisburg; three sons, Aubrey Lee (Lisa) Knois Jr. of Murfreesboro, Michael (Cindy) Knois of Lewisburg, Steve (Kim) Knois of Lewisburg; daughter, Debbie (Jason) Petty of Lewisburg; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Saturday morning from the chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Lucas and the Rev. Willis Pope officiating. Nephews served as pallbearers. David Jackson Leftwich of Fayetteville died Wednesday (Dec. 29, 2010) in Lynchburg Care Center. He was 69. Mr. Leftwich was born June 23, 1941 in Fayetteville and was the son of the late Jackson H. Leftwich and Lottie Smith Leftwich who survives. Survivors in addition to his mother include his wife of 47 years, Ann Taylor Leftwich of Fayetteville, two daughters, Leeann and husband Kevin Zajas of Kingston, New Hampshire, and Sarah Beth and husband Brett Spray of Fayetteville and one grandson Jackson Taylor Spray. Mr. Leftwich was preceded in death by his sister, Carol Leftwich Blackwelder. Mr. Leftwich was a member of the Church of Christ and a retired employee of Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg. Memorial services were conducted Friday morning at the Howell Church of Christ with Bro. Don Hudson officiating. Jessie Viola McGee, 91, of New Hermon Community, died Wednesday morning (Jan. 5, 2011) at the Christian Care Center after an extended illness. A native of Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Jack Brown and Laura Brown and was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Laddie Ross McGee back in December 1981. She was a lifelong homemaker and worked alongside her husband on their family farm and was a longtime member of the Baptist Church in the Charity Community. Survivors include her daughter, Frances Marie (Charlie) Frizzell of Shelbyville; son, Harold (Frances) McGee of New Hermon Community; grandson, Ricky McGee of Mt. Juliet; granddaughter, Janet (Terry) Moorelock of Murfreesboro; great-grandchildren, Sarah Presley, Audrey Moorelock, Alaina Moorelock and Austin Moorelock; brother, J.B. Brown of Fayetteville. Funeral services were held Friday in the chapel of Doak-Howell Funeral Home with Bro. Mark Pierce officiating. Burial followed in the Willow Mount cemetery. Clara Ozell Rodgers, 97, a resident of Athens, Ala., died Monday (Jan. 3, 2011) at Decatur General Hospital in Decatur, Ala. Graveside funeral services were conducted Thursday morning at Elkton cemetery in Elkton with Bro. William Suddarth officiating. Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Betty Mary Olsen Schweitzer, 85, of Fayetteville, died Thursday morning (Jan. 6, 2011) in Donalson Care Center. Mrs. Schweitzer was a native of Waterbury, Conn., and was the daughter of the late Fredrick and Charlotte Hamilton Olsen. She was a retired head bookkeeper at the Union National Bank and a member of the St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church. She was a member of the DAR for 32 years, the Eastern Star for 62 years and enjoyed her hobbies of sewing, knitting and quilting. Survivors include her husband, Thomas E. Schweitzer of Fayetteville; sister, Ruth Olsen of Fayetteville; and several cousins in Watertown, Waterbury and Bethlehem, Conn. Funeral services were conducted Saturday morning at St. Mary's Episcopal Church with the Revs. Jim Rogers, Tom Wilson and Julie Anna Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Watertown at a later date.
