George Allen Surgenor, Jr.
Kingsport - George Allen Surgenor, Jr., 60, of Kingsport went home to be with Jesus at 12:36 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, 2006 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Kingsport. George was a graduate of Ketron High School in 1965. He served with the US Army National Guard achieving the rank of Sergeant. George Surgenor, Jr. was a former employee of the Kingsport City Police Department before retiring with the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department in 1999 with 32 years of service. He was an enthusiast for street rods. George was a member of Gravely Baptist Church in Kingsport.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Allen Surgenor, Sr. & Hazel Wright Surgenor; and his father-in-law & mother-in-law, Mack & Flora Rhoton.
George Allen Surgenor, Jr. is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Nola Rhoton Surgenor; his two daughters, Valerie Medlin & her husband, Gary, Vicki Leftwich & her husband, Jackie (both of Kingsport); his four grandchildren, Courtney Smith, Meghan Medlin, Austin Leftwich & Matthew Medlin; three sisters, Evelyn White & Jim Birchfield (Asheville, NC), Mary Alice Kinsler & her husband, Larry (Kingsport), Argelene Barnette & her husband, Keith (Blountville, TN); two brothers, Steve Surgenor & his wife, Maxine (Blountville, TN) & Michael Surgenor & his wife, Frankie (Kingsport) along with several nieces and nephews.
George Allen Surgenor, Jr. will lie in state with a Sullivan County Sheriff Department Honor Guard from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, 2006 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport or you may call any time at the residence. A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, June 24, 2006 at 8 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor David Salley & Rev. Guy Tilley officiating. Law & Order will provide the music.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 25, 2006 at Oak Hill cemetery with Dwain Hittinger, Lawrence Hittinger, Don Ray Hittinger, Paul Davis, Lee White, Kenny Qualls, Bill Chapman & Daniel Galloway serving as pallbearers.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gravely Baptist Church Building Fund, 500 Gravely Road, Kingsport, TN 37660.

Robena Shelton Lane
Kingsport - Robena Shelton Lane, 66, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Friday morning, June 23, 2006, at Indian Path Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
Born in Kingsport, Robena lived here all of her life and was a member of Lynn Garden Chapel.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William McKinley and Roxie Pearl Wilkerson Shelton and a brother, Bob Shelton.
Surviving are her husband, M. Rocky Lane of the home, two daughters, Debbie Watts and husband Tommy and Kim Weaver and husband Jay all of Kingsport; two grandsons, Josh Watts and Andrew Watts, both of Kingsport; four brothers, Willis Shelton and wife Irene of Richmond, VA, Gerald Shelton of Kingsport, Doug Shelton of Michigan and Audie Shelton and wife Lynne of Myrtle Beach, SC; sister-in-law, Ann Shelton of Hammond, IN along with several nieces, nephews and many wonderful friends.
Calling hours are from 5-7 pm on Sunday, June 25, 2006 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm on Monday, June 26, 2006 in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Eddie McAmis and Pastor Herby Powers, officiating. Music will be provided by Praise Trio and Sounds of Praise.
Graveside services will follow at the Tri-Cities Memory Gardens, Blountville. Pallbearers will be her family and friends.

John C. Dotson
Kingsport - John C. "Jay" Dotson, 90, of Kingsport, passed away late Saturday night, June 24, 2006, at Bristol Hospice House.
He was born in Church Hill but had spent the majority of his life in Kingsport. He attended Church Hill High School. He was a Scout Master with the form Boy Scout Troop #53, Mt. Carmel, for many years. He retired from Eastman Kodak in the research department as a machinist with over 44 years of service. He was the current owner/operator of Electro Plating Services in Kingsport, which is now located in the old Patton Store on Netherland Inn Road. His trademark has been left in many homes and businesses in the Tri-Cities and Southwest Virginia area. He was the oldest active member of the Church Hill Clay Masonic Lodge #386 and Kingsport Masonic Lodge #688. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Mt. Carmel for over 60 years, where he served as a Deacon for many years and taught the Sr. Adult Mens class, was a choir memeber, served on numerous pulpit committees and was on a mission committee which established the Carters Valley Baptist Church which is now known as Ridgeview Baptist Church. John was also a former volunteer for several years for Meals on Wheel in Mt Carmel, at Bays Mountain in the Steadman House and also served on the Tennessee Baptist Executive Board, in Brentwood, TN as well as a host of other responsibilities with the Holston Valley Baptist Association.
John was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Hall Dotson; a great granddaughter, Emily Elise Ailshie and one brother, June Dotson.
Surviving are his wife, Edna Marsh Dotson of the home; three daughters, Shirley Ruth Dotson of Kingsport, Sondra Carol Bridwell of Kingsport and Diana Fleming and husband Donnie of Piney Flats; one son, John C. Dotson, III and wife Susan of Carmel, CA; a step-daughter, Shirley Marsh Waters of Mt. Carmel; step-son, Larry Marsh and wife Connie of Kingsport ; 9 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 4 step great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Edna Larkin of Church Hill, Tudy Barrett of Kingsport and Sis Alley and husband Toddy of Church Hill; one brother, Edsel Dotson and wife Ann of Church Hill along with several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 5 - 8 pm on Tuesday, June 27, 2006 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 a the Oak Grove Baptist Church, 311 Cypress Street, Mt. Carmel, TN 37645 with Pastor Richard Harris, Pastor Steve Tilley and Pastor Bruce Hullette, officiating. Mr. Dotson will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the service.
The Clay Lodge #386 F & AM will perform Masonic Services prior to the Entombment at Oak Hill Mausoleum, Kingsport. Pallbearers will be David Holcomb,George Bridwell, Richard Easterling, Jason Price, Kevin Lane, Bart Walker, Wes Barrett, Shorty Alley, Bryce Ailshie, Tyler Ailshie, and Carter Bridwell.
Memorial contributions may be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 311 Cypress Street, Mt. Carmel, TN 37645 or to Bristol Hospice House, 280 Steele's Road, Bristol, TN 37620

Shannie Hawkins
Kingsport - Shannie "Janie" Hawkins, 95, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 23, 2006, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Born in Floyd, VA, Mrs. Hawkins had been a resident of Kingsport since 1952. She attended First Christian Church, Kingsport.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Lee Hawkins; three sisters and one brother.
Surviving are her two daughters, Nancy Honaker and Lynda Lovin both of Kingsport; two sons, Bill Jannie and wife Doris of Claymont, DE and Walter Hawkins of Kingsport; ten grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mildred Hawkins Light of Kingsport along with several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 5 -7 pm on Friday, June 30, 2006 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport. Graveside services will be held at 11 am on Saturday, July 1, 2006 at Boones Creek Christian Church cemetery, Johnson City, TN. It is requested that family and friends meet at the cemetery at 10:55 am.

George Richard Knight
KINGSPORT - George Richard "Dick" Knight, of Fleetwood Drive in Kingsport, passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2006 , at his residence. Mr. Knight, the son of Robert Jackson Knight, Jr. and Marguerite Wooddell Knight, was born on September 13, 1928 in Clearwater, FL. He graduated from Clearwater High School in 1946 and the University of Florida in 1954. He retired in 1993, after 38 years of service, from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Agriculture Statistics Service where he served as the Statistician-in-Charge of the Mississippi Field Office in Jackson, Mississippi. He served in the United States Air Force, both active duty and reserve, and retired as Lieutenant Colonel in 1982.
He is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Ann Hertz Knight, daughter, Leslie Knight May and husband Byron C. of Kingsport, son, John Richard Knight and wife Rhonda Lynn of Colorado Springs, CO, grandchildren, Bennett Richard May, Sydney Ann May and Jackson Makemie May all of Kingsport, Whitney Nichole Knight, Heather Leigh Knight, Julianna Marie Knight and Robert Jackson Knight, IV all of Colorado Springs, CO, brothers, Robert Jackson Knight, III of Homestead, FL and Francis Makemie Knight of Tarpon Springs, FL.
Services will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Saturday June 24, 2006 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport, with Dr. Marvin Cameron officiating. Eulogies will be given by John Knight, Byron May and Dennis Findley. Following the servie there will be a flag presentation by the VFW Post # 3382. The family will receive friends, at the funeral home, immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of George R. Knight, The National WWII Museum, Attn: Craig Hall, 945 Magazine Street, New Orleans, LA 70130 or to the Salvation Army 505 Dale Street, Kingsport, TN 37660.

Maggie Blackburn (Melvin) Bailey
Rock Hill, SC - Maggie Blackburn (Melvin) Bailey, 86, of McConnell Highway, Rock Hill, SC, died on Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at her daughters residence in Kingsport, TN.
A native of Bland, VA, Mrs. Bailey was the daughter of the late Arthur and Maggie Stanley Melvin. She was a member of the Woodland United Methodist Church and a member of the Susanna Wesley Circle. Mrs. Bailey was retired from Celanese Corporation.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy M. Bailey and her son, Kenneth Bailey.
Surviving are her two daughters, Barbara Sue B. Chase of Kingsport and Debra "Debbie" Anne B. Bostic of Rock Hill, SC; one brother, Roy Vance Melvin of Bland, Va; seven sisters, Burnette Updike of Huntington, W. Va, Georgia Eaton of Winston Salem, NC, Sally Murray and Joan Donaghy both of Benton, TN, Ethel Mae Jones of Bealeton, VA, Ellen Sue Harner of Bland, VA and Nellie Hale of Manassas, VA along with seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 - 7:30 pm on Thursday, June 15, 2006 at the Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Rd, Rock Hill, SC and at other times at her daughter, Debbie Bostic's home, 317 Carly Lane, Rock Hills, SC.
Services will be held at 1 pm on Friday, June 16, 2006 in the Greene Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dr. Larry Parker, officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Park, Rock Hill, SC

Grace Leeper Mayo
Kingsport - Grace Leeper Mayo, 81, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at Indian Path Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
Born in Hawkins Co., TN, Grace had been a resident of Kingsport for most of her life, but had recently been a resident of Church Hill Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Russell Mayo; one son, James E. Mayo; and her parents, William Henry Leeper and Flora Elizabeth Bowen Leeper.
Surviving are her two sons, John Mayo and wife Sandra and Robert H. Mayo all of Kingsport; three grandchildren, Patricia Roberts, Sandy Williams and husband Hal, and Robert "Tiger" Mayo and wife Amy; eight great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Gwenda Mayo of Kingsport; four sisters-in-law, Ruth Bowery, Mabel Leeper, Sallie Mayo and Kate Mayo.
Calling hours are from 5 - 7 pm on Thursday, June 15, 2006 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 7 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ralph Crawford, officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 11 am on Friday, June 16, 2006 at Oak Hill cemetery, Kingsport. It is requested that family and friends meet at the cemetery by 10:55 am.

John H. Jacob
Johnson City - John H. Jacob, 78, of Johnson City, passed away after an extended illness on Sunday, June 11, 2006, at North Side Hospital.
He was born in Battle Creek, Michigan and moved to Johnson City in March 1994. John served in the US Army for over 20 years, having served during the Korean conflict earning the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Commendations, National Defense Service Medal (1st OLC), and the Good Conduct Medal (5th Award). He was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a great friend to anyone in need. John was of the Christian faith.
He was preceded in Death by his parents, John H., Jr. and Ruth M. Worth Jacob.
Surviving are his two daughters, Teresa Powers and husband Steve of Kingsport and Vinita J. Chen and husband Enoch of Blountville; two step-daughters, Rebekha Grigsby and husband Dan of Thorton, Colorado and Johanna Tilbury of Hawaii; son, Richard Hamm and wife Karen of Gettysburg, PA; two step-sons, Robert Tilbury of Ohio and James Tilbury of Iowa; 9 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, Rebecca and Maggie; one brother, James G. Jacob and wife Marjorie of Palatka, FL, along with many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Calling hours are from 5-7 pm on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport. Friends may call anytime at the residence of his daughter, Teresa Powers. A service will follow at 7 pm in the funeral home chapel with a eulogy by Richard Hamm.
Military Graveside services will be held at 10 am Friday, June 16, 2006 at Glen Forest cemetery, Yellow Springs, Ohio. Pallbearers will be the Military Honor Guard.
