Ralph Mills
KINGSPORT - Ralph Willard Mills returned to the realm whence he came Tuesday, 28, November 2006 at Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness. Ralph's departure follows that of, in his immediate family, his mother Nervine Brewer Mills, father Riley Mills, brother Eugene Mills, wife of 58 years, Jeanne L. Johnson Mills (in December 2003) and granddaughter Dharma Hlynn Vlauren Mills (in December 1998).
Remaining are his son, Larry V. Mills, daughter-in-law Vicky Lynn Clingenpeel, and granddaughter, Prajna Ruh Alaya Mills.
Ralph was born in Hancock County 9 July 1921, attended Hancock County High School, and learned the trade of auto bodyshop work as well as helping tend the farm. He enlisted in the navy during the second world war, serving in the Pacific Theatre as a SeaBee (Construction Battalion). Soon after his discharge and return to Tennessee, he married the love of his life, Jeanne Louella Johnson on 30 October 1945. After short stays in Knoxville and Hancock County, Ralph accepted the position of police officer for the then still young, still vigorously growing city of Kingsport, a position from which he retired in 1979 after thirty years service.
His active years also included association with professional and fraternal organizations such as the Fraternal Order of Police, Police Benevolent Association, Shriners, and, in particular, he maintained a longterm membership with the Eagles. He was a skilled hanyman and spent many enjoyable hours constructing projects for Jeanne and his beloved granddaughters, upon whom he especially doted.
During his latter years Ralph's ability to get around was limited by a plethora of infirmities, through which he soldiered stoically while maintaining an interest in current events. His renowned sense of humor did not abandoned him. He missed being able to socialize with his many longtime friends, but Ralph's courage in the face of physical and emotional pain has served as an inspiration to those close to him and his presents will be sorely missed by those who loved him.
A private graveside service will be conducted at Tri-Cities Memory Gardens on Monday, 4 December 2006 at 1400.
