Edward "Ed" Bowman, 75
CHURCH HILL - Aud Edward "Ed" Bowman, 75, passed away Tuesday, (March 13, 2007) at the Church Hill Health Care & Rehab Center following an extended illness.
Mr. Bowman was a native of Johnson City and was a retired carpenter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Aud Edward Bowman and Rutha Mae Loudy Bowman Boswell, his step father, Richard Boswell; sisters, Sylvia Murr and Mary Virginia Henry Sayles; brother, Herman Bowman.
He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Brenda H. Messer, Karen M. Pennington, Lorrie M. Williams, Katherine Sue Kellam, Helen Frazier, Margaret Avery, Linda Nicholson, Rose Marie Nelson, David Murr, Rick Murr, Roger Murr, Jeff Murr, Andy Murr, Charles Henry, Dan Henry, Jim Henry, Harry Henry, Doug Henry; special cousins, Gertrude Calloway and Ted Williams; several great nieces and nephews.
The family extends special thanks to the staff and management of Church Hill Health Care & Rehab Center for their exemplary care and service.
Calling hours are from 5:00 to 6:00 P. M. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home and anytime at the home of Karen Pennington, 814 Mountain View Road, Church Hill.
Services will be conducted Sunday at 6:00 P.M. in the funeral home chapel with Marty Murr officiating.
Graveside services with military honors conducted by the Hawkins County Color and Tennessee National Guard will be conducted Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Mountain Home National cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Chuck Pennington, Gene Messer, Rick Murr and Jeff Murr.

Fred L. Painter, 80
CHURCH HILL - Fred L. Painter, 80, passed away Saturday (March 17, 2007) at Brookhaven Manor Nursing Home following complications from an automobile accident.
Mr. Painter was born November 10, 1926 in Kansas City, Missouri and resided in Delaware 42 years prior to coming to Church Hill in 1999. He was of the Baptist faith and was a retired employee of Daimler Chrysler with 32 years service. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the US Army.
Mr. Painter was an antique car enthusiast and was a member of the Antique Car Club. He enjoyed golfing and bowling.
He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Pearl Bailey Painter; brother, Ray Painter and sister, Grace Overbay.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Verda Jo Turner Painter, Church Hill; one brother, Harry Painter, Knoxville; one sister, Vena Kelly, Georgia; a very special niece, JoAnn Smith and husband, Allan and several other nieces and nephews.
A special thanks to Adventa Hospice and Brookhaven Manor for their wonderful care.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Johnson Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted Monday at 7:00 P.M. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Gary Gerhardt officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Zion cemetery in Baileyton.
Pallbearers will be, David C. Painter, Bill Carpenter, James Hamby, Bob Stohler, Allan Smith and Chris Smith.
Honorary bearers will be Bob Hubble, Bill Carter, Troy Alley, Percy Wininger and Howard Price.
The family request those desiring may make memorial contributions to the charity of choice.

Bessie W. Ward, 95
Mrs. Bessie W. Ward, age 95, of 209 Kay Ave., Church Hill passed away Thursday, March 22, 2007 at her home following an extended illness.
Mrs. Ward was a life long resident of Hawkins County and was a member of the Grassy Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
Mrs. Ward is preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Ward in 1998. Grandchildren, Dennis Alen Ward and Shari Lyn Ward. Her parents and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Roy “Arlon” I Ward and Joyce Ward of Leesburg, Fla. Sister, Mrs. Vada Ward of Rogersville. Several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Saturday at the Johnson Funeral Home and anytime at the residence.
Funeral services will be conducted 8:00 pm Saturday at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Teddy Webb officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted 1:00 pm Sunday at the Grassy Creek Freewill Baptist Church cemetery.
The Ward family would like to thank Mrs. Iva Dell Patterson and Mrs. O’Dell Thompson for the there help and special care for Mrs. Ward.

Helen Elizabeth Mitchell, 94
Proverbs 31-28 “Her children arise and call her blessed”
CHURCH HILL – Helen Elizabeth Mitchell, 94, of 914 Holliston Mills Road, went home to be with the Lord, Monday (May 12, 2008) following an extended illness.
Mrs. Mitchell was a native of Osaka, Virginia but had spent most of her adult life in Hawkins County. She was a very dedicated member of Fudges Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Tank Mitchell; sons, Billy Mitchell, Jimmy Mitchell and Jerry Mitchell; daughters, Lena Cox and Phyllis Leeper.
She is survived by three daughters, Inez Slemp, Surgoinsville; Bobbie Fairall, Savage, MD; Linda Manriquez, Laurel, MD; 16 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren; two sons-in-law, John Cox and Kenneth Leeper; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson Funeral Home and anytime at the residence.
Services will be conducted Wednesday at 7:00 P.M. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Charlie Eberhart officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted Thursday at 11:00 A.M. at Fudges Chapel cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Rick Leeper, Scott Leeper, Mark Fairall, Bill Mitchell, Mitch Cox, Robbie Lee and Chad Lee.
Honorary bearers will be Greg Fletcher, Darrell Thacker, Bo Lee, Earl Taylor, Leo Conant, Lyons Hurd and Dale Bennett.

Dorothy Alice Mullins, 92
MOUNT CARMEL - Dorothy Alice Mullins, 92, passed away Tuesday (May 13, 2008) at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital & Medical Center following a brief illness.
Mrs. Mullins was a life long resident of Hawkins County and was a member of Goshen Valley Church of God and attended Oak Gove Baptist Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Pershing Mullins in 1983; her parents, Byrd English and Katherine Wagner Marshall; brothers, William Marshall, Ralph Marshall, Fred Marshall and Clayton Marshall; sisters, Mabel Stroupe and Fannie Cradic.
She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Edward Tipton Mullins, Mount Carmel; Benny Allen and Alice Mullins, Kingston, TN; one daughter, Susan Booker, Mount Carmel; 6 grandchildren, Tyler Mullins, Preston Mullins, Ryan Mullins, Rachel Mullins, Matthew Booker and Avery Booker; 2 great grandchildren, Lane Mullins and Morgan Mullins; sister-in-law, Nadine Marshall; special nieces, Marjorie Harless, Janie Smithson and husband, Jim and several other nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 P.M. at Johnson Funeral Home and anytime at the residence.
Services will be conducted Thursday at 7:00 P.M. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Randy Presnell and the Rev. Brandon Holly officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted Friday at 11:00 A.M. at Goshen Valley cemetery.

John Lee Wagner, 23
CHURCH HILL - John Lee Wagner, 23, of 960 River Road, was DOA Sunday (May 18, 2008) at Hawkins County Wellmont Hospital from injuries received in a automobile accident.
John was a life long resident of Hawkins County and was employed by Hurd Landscaping.
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Billy Carter, paternal grandmother, Ruby Wagner.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Rita Ann and Joe Sindon, Church Hill; his father, Terry Lee Wagner, Johnson City; one brother, Tony Smith, Kingsport; two half brothers, Bobby Joe Wagner and Keith Wagner, both of Oklahoma; one half sister, Christina Wagner, Oklahoma; several cousins.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home and anytime at the residence of Billy Carter, 238 Hickory Hills Road, Church Hill.
Services will be conducted Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Daniel Phillips officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Valley View cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Daniel Carter, Dwayne Way, Dusty Ramey, Paul Hunley, Bobby Carter and Shonna Huckaby.

Joshua Wayne Wallen, 22
CHURCH HILL - Joshua Wayne Wallen, 22, of 154 Wallen Town Road, was DOA Sunday (May 18, 2008) at Wellmont Hawkins County Memorial Hospital from injuries received in a automobile accident.
Joshua was a life long resident of Church Hill.
He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Eckel and Diana Wallen, maternal grandfather, Billy Carter.
He is survived by his parents, Earl Wallen and Patricia Carter, Church Hill; one brother, Jermy Wayne Wallen, Church Hill; maternal grandmother, Carolyn Carter, Kingsport; several cousins.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home and anytime at the residence of Billy Carter, 238 Hickory Hills Road, Church Hill.
Services will be conducted Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Daniel Phillips officiating.
