COOKEVILLE -- Graveside services for Joe Scott Anderson, 86, of Cookeville, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 30, at Crest Lawn Memorial cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. today, Thursday, April 29, at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Mr. Anderson died Monday, April 26, 2010, in NHC Healthcare of Cookeville. He was born April 8, 1924, in Peeled Chestnut Community of White County to the late Sam and Maggie Dean Pritle Anderson.Mr. Anderson was a long-time prominent business and civic leader in Cookeville. He was the retired owner/operator of Southern Motel. Many travelers on Hwy. 70N in years past knew him as the man who mowed the yard wearing his suit and tie. He and the late Gil Maxwell were founding partners of Thunderbird Motel and he and his late sister, Myrtle Prater, were the founding partners of Riviera Plaza Inn (currently Executive Inn).

Mr. Anderson was a member of Cookeville First United Methodist Church, and a former longtime member of Cookeville Masonic Lodge 266 F&AM, York Rite Masonic Bodies and Al Menah Shrine Temple.

His family includes a son and daughter-in-law, Jesse and Peggy Anderson of Cookeville; a sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Buddy Green of Murfreesboro; a brother and sister-in-law, T.J. and Martha Anderson of Murfreesboro; two grandchildren, Alison Anderson and husband Grant Lovellette of Watertown, Mass., and Biff and wife Deanna Anderson of Cookeville; and two great-grandchildren, Kyra and Cole Anderson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Louise Hood Anderson; two sisters, Sue Reed and Myrtle Prater; and three brothers, Sam General Anderson, Jesse Anderson and Verble Anderson. Linda Faye Spurlock

COOKEVILLE -- Funeral services for Linda Faye Spurlock, 68, of Cookeville, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17, from the chapel of Whitson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Boiling Springs cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5-9 p.m. today, Tuesday, March 16, and from 7 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Linda died Sunday, March 14, 2010, in Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 27, 1941, in Jackson County to the late Loyd and Ruby Hargis.

Her family includes her husband, Billy Houston Spurlock of Cookeville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Bobby Julian of Baxter and Julie and Donnie Hawkins of Cookeville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Billy Houston Jr. and Celita Spurlock and Larry and Kim Spurlock, all of Cookeville; two sisters, Mary Francis Tucker of Baxter and Glenda Sue Palk of Cookeville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Buddy and Pauline Hargis of Baxter and Wayne and Judy Hargis of Cookeville; a sister-in-law, Jan Hyder of Sparta; a brother-in-law, Roy Spurlock of Cookeville; 12 grandchildren and spouses, Christie and Jason Huddleston, Craig and Misty Julian, Nicole Hawkins, Brandon Tucker, Chris Ealey, Dale Spurlock, Ashley Reynolds, Michelle and Sarah Spurlock, Johnathan and Lacie Rice and Coty Nash; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Freddie Eugene Rice; a brother, James Nathan Hargis; grandparents, Alvin Lee and Daisy Hargis, Cecil and Mattie Burton and Naomie Petry; and a brother-in-law, Claude Hyder.

Pastor Tim Sharp will officiate at the services.

Wonna M. Brown

LIVINGSTON -- Funeral services for Wonna M. Brown, 99, of Clarkville and formerly of Overton County, will be held Thursday, April 15, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Livingston. Burial will be in Overton County Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends today, Wednesday, April 14, from 4-7 p.m. at the church. Mrs. Brown died Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at Alive Hospice in Nashville. She was born Feb. 3, 1911, in Pickett County, the youngest daughter of the late John Abner and Martha Susan Williams.

Mrs. Brown was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church. She was a homemaker and committed to her volunteer work at Livingston Hospital where she amassed over 2,000 plus hours of volunteer work. She was a joyful, uplifting Christian woman who will be greatly missed.The choir of First United Methodist Church in Livingston will sing at her funeral.

Her family includes a daughter, JoAnn Weakley of Southside; a son, Millard M. Brown Jr. of Hermitage; a granddaughter, Amy L. Clark; and a great-grandson, Christopher Brown.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, Millard M. Brown in 1968; and siblings, Charlotte Kuykendall, Estil and Webster Williams, Posie Williams, Roxye Wynn, Dona Wilborn and Rubye Littrell. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Pallbearers will be Christopher Brown, Lucian L. Wyatt, Wade and Wayne Ellis Williams, James Kuykendall Jr. and Troy Stuart.

Rev. Craig Green will officiate the services. Speck Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edwin (Big Ed) Smith

GEORGIA -- Memorial Services for Edwin (Big Ed) Smith, 53, of Oxford, Ga., will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 24, from the chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home. Mr. Smith died Friday, April 16, 2010. His family includes his wife, Devra Smith; a daughter and son-in-law, Kateri and Danny Worthington of Social Circle; son and daughter-in-law, Dominic and Angela Cooper of Covington, Ga.; a brother, Richard D. Smith of Covington; eight grandchildren, Dawson, Kobi, Cameron, Gavin, Zack, Tyler, Aaron and Dillon; and nieces and nephews, Shannon Brock, Ken Smith and Wanda Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry V. Smith and Cledith Smith McCulloch. Pastor Paul Ficarrotta will officiate at the services. Claudine Flatt

COOKEVILLE -- Funeral services for Claudine Flatt, 74, of Cookeville, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, from the chapel of Whitson Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Fox cemetery in Jackson County. The family will receive friends from 3-9 p.m. today, Tuesday, April 27, and from noon until time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Flatt died Monday, April 26, 2010, in Bethesda Health Care Center. She was born July 1, 1935, in Jackson County to the late Frank Cheatham and Dorothy Bennett Rhoten. Mrs. Flatt was a homemaker and a member of Holladay Church of Christ.

Her family includes two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Annette Flatt and Mike and Judy Flatt, all of Cookeville; a daughter, Teresa Flatt Clark of West Monroe, La.; a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Opal and Virgil Medlin of Cookeville; four stepsons and daughters-in-law, Eldon J. and Pearl Flatt, James D. and Reba Flatt and Paul and Brenda Flatt, all of Cookeville, and Willie and Jean Flatt of Alexandria, La.; five grandchildren, Freddy Clark and Christie Clark, both of West Monroe, Justin Flatt and fiancee Nocona Canady of Knoxville and Bryan and Joshua Flatt, both of Cookeville; a great-granddaughter, Briley Flatt (daughter of Bryan Flatt and Brittany Knight); 13 stepgrandchildren; 13 stepgreat-grandchildren; one stepgreat-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert B. Flatt; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Hollie T. and Neal Ward Flatt; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Lovell Long and Lottie and Claude E. Smith; two brothers, Clarence and Jesse Rhoten; and a stepgrandson, Randy J. Flatt. Pallbearers will be grandsons and family. Honorary pallbearers will be nurses and staff of Bethesda Health Care Center. Bros. Johnny Fox and Denton Ramsey will officiate at the services.

Dr. Gary C. Pickett

COOKEVILLE -- Funeral services for Dr. Gary C. Pickett, 64, of Cookeville, will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 28, at Crest Lawn Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Crest Lawn Memorial cemetery, with full military honors provided by the Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. today, Tuesday, April 27, at the funeral home. Dr. Pickett died Sunday, April 25, 2010, in Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was born Sept. 11, 1945, in Wilmington, N.C., to the late Carmel C. and Maudie C. Clark Pickett.

Dr. Pickett served in the Air Force as a SSGT during the Vietnam War from April 1967 through January 1971, receiving the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Dr. Pickett was a professor of the College of Business at Tennessee Tech University for 33 years, beginning from 1977 to the present. He was the interim chairman of the Management, Marketing and Economics Department from January through September of 1988. In September, 1988, he became head of the Department of Decision Sciences and Management. From 1997 through 1999, he was Assistant Dean of the College of Business. In 1999, he became Associate Dean of the College of Business until he stepped down in 2007 to become a full-time professor.

His family includes his wife of 44 1/2 years, Zarita (Cita) Rogers Pickett (whom he married in October, 1966, in Winston-Salem, N.C.); two daughters and sons-in-law, Beth P. and Joseph Jones of Huntsville, Ala., and Becky and Frank Tittle of Cookeville; a grandson, Matthew D. Jones of Huntsville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Shirley and George Pierson of New Jersey and Patricia Stevens of Michigan; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jay W. and Kathy Duke of Salisbury, N.C., and Gene and Elinor Duke of California; his father-in-law, Gaines Rogers of Cookeville; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Liza and Barry Killough. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Betty P. Rogers.

Pallbearers will be Donald Weinrauch, Stuart Wells, Curtis Armstrong, Bob Bell, Rodney Carlson and Jack Matson. Honorary pallbearers will be the College of Business faculty and staff from the university. Memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Care Fund, c/o Cookeville Regional Medical Center, 142 West 5th Street, Cookeville, TN 38501. Bro. Charlie Hutchinson will officiate at the services.

Bedford (Tom) Madewell

COOKEVILLE -- Funeral services for Bedford (Tom) Madewell, 73, of Cookeville, will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 29, from the chapel of Dyer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Crest Lawn Memorial cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, at the funeral home. Mr. Madewell died Monday, April 26, 2010, in Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was born March 28, 1937, in Putnam County to the late William (Bill) and Anna Phy Madewell. Mr. Madewell was a retired cafeteria supervisor from Tennessee Tech University. He was a member of Colonial Heights Church of Christ.

His family includes his wife, Rachel Bumbalough Madewell of Cookeville; a son, Tommy Madewell of Cookeville; a daughter and son-in-law, Amy and David Copeland of Cookeville; a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Willie Huddleston of Cookeville; four grandchildren, Tyler, Jeremiah, Heather and Lydia Copeland; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa Ann Madewell; a sister, Willie Mae White; and a brother, Edward Madewell. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Memorial donations may be made to the family to cover medical expenses. Bro. Rodney Pitts and Dennis Oliver will officiate at the services.

Marion Theresa Ryan

COOKEVILLE -- Memorial services and internment for Marion Theresa Ryan, 82, of Cookeville, will be held July 26, at Arlington National cemetery. Mrs. Ryan died Monday, April 26, 2010, at NHC of Cookeville. She was born Dec. 28, 1927, in New York, N.Y., to the late Thomas and Anna Bolger Murphy. Mrs. Ryan was retired from the St. John's Hospital in Queens, N.Y., where she worked as a medical administrator.

Her family includes a son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Connie Trisdale Ryan of Cookeville; a daughter and son-in-law, Robin and John Nowinski of Walden, N.Y.; a sister, Doris Murphy of Huntinton, W.Va., three grandchildren, Bill and Collen Ryan of Cookeville and John Nowinski of Walden; and a nephew, Edward Manos of Huntington. The family extends appreciation for the caring attention to her medical needs in recent months by the staff at NHC Nursing Home and Heritage Pointe Assisted Living Community. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Ryan was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Ryan; three brothers, Thomas, William and Michael Murphy; and a sister, Kathleen Manos. Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MAMIE BRUCE

Funeral services for Mamie J. Bruce, 81 of Baxter were Saturday, Dec. 20 at 11 A.M. from the BAXTER CHAPEL of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home with burial in Crest Lawn Memorial cemetery.

Mrs. Bruce died Thursday, December 18, 2003 at Bethesda Health Care Center in Cookeville.

She was born September 11, 1922 in Warren County, TN. to the late Jimmy Randolph and Almedia Frances Hensley Ramsey. She was a retired molder operator with McCord's Corp. of Cookeville. Her husband the late Bernice Ralph Bruce was elected Putnam County Trustee in 1960, he died suddenly while in office on December 5, 1964 and she served as Trustee completing his term, serving to 1966.

Survivors are Son & Daughter-in-law Nelson & Gail Bruce of Baxter, Adopted Son Edward Keaton Bruce of San Antonio, Texas, Sister Dimple Cumby of Cookeville, Granddaughter & husband Tammy & Richard Burchett, 2 Great-Grandsons Brandon & Channing Burchett all of Baxter, several nieces & nephews. Family received friends after 4 P.M. Friday, Dec. 19 at the funeral home. Active Pallbearers were Terry Cumby, James Rice, Rick Ramsey, Richard Ashworth, Calbert, Bobby & Tommy D. Bruce. Bro. Dorris Ray Bruce officiated.

CHARLES FLATT

Funeral Services for Charles A. Flatt, 68 of Cookeville were Sunday, Dec. 21 at 2 P.M. from the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home with burial in Cookeville City cemetery. Mr. Flatt died Thursday, December 18, 2003 at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, TN.

He was born November 1, 1935 in Jackson County to the late Marion Oplis and Vina Ethel Fox Flatt. He was a farmer and had received numerous awards by the Putnam County Soil Conservation Board including, Farm Family of the Year, Pasture Farmer of the Year, and Master Farmer of the Year.

He was an active member of Smyrna Church of Christ. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Ava Nell Pippin; and a brother Hubert Flatt.

Survivors are wife of 47 years, Katrina Gentry Flatt (Whom he married Feb. 17, 1956 in Gainesboro, Tn.); Daughter & Son-in-law Tena & Wayne Mayberry of Old Hickory, Tn., 1 Son & Daughter-in-law Michael & Jennifer Flatt of Mt. Juliet, Tn.; three grandchildren, Andy Flatt, Holly Flatt, and Katelyn Mayberry; Sister Dorothy Chaffin of Cookeville, Brother W.T. Flatt of Cookeville. Bro. Sammy Webb, Bro. Dan Jones, and Bro. Joey Davis officiated.

Family received friends Saturday, Dec. 20 from 3 to 8 P.M. and Sunday 11am until service time at the funeral home. Family & Friends served as pallbearers.

Bonnie Raines Bowman

COOKEVILLE -- Graveside services for Bonnie Raines Bowman, 89, of Baxter, will be held Friday, Nov. 16, at 4 p.m. at Cookeville cemetery.

Mrs. Bowman died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 6, 1918, in Jackson County to the late Logan and Avo Netherton Raines.

Mrs. Bowman was a co-owner with her daughter of Gift Gallery in Cookeville for 21 years.

She was a member of Bloomington Springs Church of Christ.

Her family includes a daughter and son-in-law, Katherine Austin (C.L.) McDonald; a sister, Lois Ralnes Bostic of Baxter; a granddaughter, Benni Rice and husband Jim Ed Jr. of Nashville; and two great-grandchildren, Andrea and Jim Ed Rice III, both of Nashville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jess E. Bowman; three brothers, Logan Jr., Mark and Marshall Raines; and two sisters, Genia Raines Vaughn and Myrtle Malone.

Bro. Paul Fox will officiate the services.

Whitson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ever Marie (Evelyn) Smith

MONTEREY -- Funeral services for Ever Marie (Evelyn) Smith, 79, of Rickman will be held Friday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Eckels cemetery in Rickman.

Family will receive friends today, Thursday, Nov. 15, from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Smith died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007, at Standing Stone Care and Rehabilitation Center in Monterey.

She was born June 9, 1928, in Gallatin to the late Richie and Pearl Abston Bohannon.

Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and factory worker.

Her family includes a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Baxter Wilson III of Loudon; a son and daughter-in-law, Johnny (Butch) and Kathy Smith of Livingston; a brother, Claude Bohannon of Crossville; three sisters, Essie Mae Webb of Overton County, Jessie Stewart of Bristol and Joyce Dyer of Baxter; a grandson, David Melton and wife Brandy of Rickman; a special great-granddaughter, Dixie Marie Melton; and a host of family and friends.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond McCoy Smith, and five brothers, Robert, James Alvin, Willis, Jack and Raymond Bohannon.

Bro. Danny Simpson will officiate the services.
