Dorothy M. Shelton
May 14, 1923 - April 21, 2009

Dorothy M. Shelton, 85, a resident of Benton, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2009. She was a member of the Old Ocoee Baptist Church in Benton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Shelton; parents, Luther and Sallie Stephens Lawson; sister, Emma Lawson; Mae Goins; and brother, James Lawson.

She is survived by grandchildren, Christy Hardin and husband, John and Chad Prueitt; great-grandchildren, Victoria and Emma Hardin and Cambree Prueitt, all of Benton; sister, Juanita Howard of Rosewell, MI; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 7:00 in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home with Reverend W. L. Shipman officiating. Interment icon will be held Friday, April 24, 2009 at 11:00 at Zion Baptist cemetery. The service will conclude with a White Dove Release Ceremony.

Her family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 on Thursday, April 23 at the funeral home.

Her family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 6221 Shallowford Road, Chattanooga TN 37421.

Susan Ann Pruett

COOKEVILLE -- Funeral services for Susan Ann Lewis Pruett, 60, of Sparta, will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25, from the chapel of Crest Lawn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Crest Lawn Memorial cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3-8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, and from noon until time of services on Sunday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Pruett died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, in Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 27, 1948, in Houston, Texas, to the late Robert Charles and Mary Alice Roach Lewis.

Mrs. Pruett was a devoted wife and mother and a member of Cookeville Church of The Nazarene. She worked as vice president at Net-Alert Monitoring Corporation for 12 years.

Her family includes her husband, Carl E. Pruett of Cookeville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Laurie and Jeff Phifer of Olive Branch, Miss., and Sara Pruett of Sparta; a son and daughter-in-law, Andy and Debbie Pruett of Olive Branch; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Caroljean and Harley Towler of Ocala, Fla., and Kathleen and Ron Swann of Memphis; her mother-in-law, Annabelle Pruett of Sparta; four granddaughters, Paige and Skylar Pruett and Kayla and Lauryn Phifer, all of Olive Branch; and two grandsons, Justin and Jakob Phifer, both of Olive Branch.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two aunts, Louanna and Daphane Roach.

Pallbearers will be Michael Mayfield, Gene Underwood, Daryll Church, Clay Padgett, Rick Maynard and Scott Proffit.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Pastor Kevin Thomas will officiate at the services.

Mattie Sue Cooper

COOKEVILLE -- Faith, family and Tennessee Technological University -- Mattie Sue Cooper defined her life in terms of her Christian faith, her love of family and her loyalty to the university where she served as a much beloved librarian, first as an assistant, then as Head Reference librarian, from 1945 till 1979.

Born in Overton County, June 15, 1914, she played basketball at Rickman High School, beginning a lifelong love of sport. In 1938 she took her B.S. in history from then TPI, all the while teaching at Pond Ridge Grammar and Rickman High Schools to pay for her education and her B.L.S. from George Peabody College in 1941. She was librarian of Livingston Academy before serving as a librarian at Camp Georgia, a civilian employee of the U.S. Army.

During her long tenure at Tech, service to the university was her watchword: teaching library science, American history and mathematics, sponsoring the Pep Club for seven years, sophomore, junior and senior classes for 10 years, the Christian Assoc. for 10 years, and three honorary societies: Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Kappa Delta and Phi Alpha Theta. But it was the Pinkerton Debate Society where she shone with her quick wit, logical analysis and persistence in making a point. She was, in 2002, given the Outstanding Service Award and in 1979, Unit B of the Women's Residence Hall was named for her and stands to this day as M.S. Cooper Hall on N. Dixie Avenue.

A beloved aunt, known for generous gifts of books, she is survived by many nieces and nephews and grand-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Mary Belle Eldridge Cooper; brother, Herman; sisters, Sally, Ofa, Thelma, Lola Dean and Emogene.

A devoted Methodist whose father built the church at Oak Hill, she was a lifelong member and supporter of Rickman Methodist Church, where she served as Sunday School superintendent and teacher, and First United Methodist Church of Cookeville.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 5, at 5 p.m. (CST) at First United Methodist Church in Cookeville. Rev. Drew Shelley will officiate. Interment icon will follow in the Eldridge Family cemetery in the Rickman Community of Overton County. Visitation at First United Methodist Church in Cookeville will be Friday from noon till service time.

Memorials may be sent to Rickman Methodist Church and the Friends of the Library, TTU Development Office, Box 5047, Cookeville, TN 38505.

Mary Ann Anderson Human

WEST HILLS -- Mary Ann Anderson Human, 81, of West Hills, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008.

A native of Putnam County, she was the daughter of the late James M. and Mary Jane Brock Anderson. Mrs. Human was a graduate of the University of Tennessee in 1949, and worked as a primary hostess on Southern Railway luxury trains "The Tennessean" and "The Southerner." Following marriage to the late Fred H. Human Jr., she lived in Germany while Mr. Human served in the Army. For a number of years she worked in interior design and as volunteer coordinator for the Community Action Committee. Mrs. Human was a member of Laurel Church of Christ.

Her family includes three sons, Fred H. III, William and James Human, and six grandchildren.

Jane Ray Scott

CHATANOOGA -- Funeral services for Jane Ray Scott, 81, of Signal Mountain, will be held Friday, Sept. 5, at 10 a.m. from the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home in Chattanooga.

Burial will be in Whittaker cemetery in Monterey.

Family will receive friends Thursday, Sept. 4, from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Scott died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was the daughter of Andrew and Christine Ray Horn.

Mrs. Scott was a 48-year resident of Signal Mountain and member of Signal Crest United Methodist Church, where she was an active member of the choir and avid Bible student and taught Bible studies, teaching Precept Ministries Studies. She was a member of Signal Mountain Glee Club for many years.

Her family includes her husband, Robert G. Scott Sr.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert G. Jr. and Nissa White Scott of Cumming, Ga., and William Ray Scott of Estes Park, Colo.; four grandchildren, Robert G. Scott III, James William Johnson Scott, Ashton Day Scott and Mollie Ray Scott; and two nephews, Howard and Sherod Wilson.

Memorial donations may be made to Signal Crest United Methodist Church.

Revs. Mark Gooden and Lew Kiser will officiate the services.

Eula Mason

COOKEVILLE -- Funeral services for Eula Mason, 69, will be held Thursday, Sept. 4, at 10 a.m. from the chapel of Cookeville Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Pleasant View cemetery.

Family will receive friends today, Wednesday, Sept. 3, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mason died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

She was born March 30, 1939, in Rockwood to the late William Smith and Pearlie Mae Ryans Rayburn.

Mrs. Mason was a homemaker and member of Double Springs Community Church.

Her family includes her husband of 36 years, John (Buster) Mason of Cookeville; two daughters, Tia Moore of Jackson and Jill Webb of Knoxville; her stepmother, Geneva Sneed; four stepsons and a stepdaughter-in-law, Randal Mason and wife Pam and Tim and Kenny Mason, all of Gordonsville, and Steve Mason of Antioch; one stepdaughter, Becky Mason of Lebanon; two grandsons, Ryan Price and Kory Webb; one great-grandson, Skyler Lee Price; one brother, Bill Rayburn of Rockwood; four other granddaughters; three other grandsons; and five other great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Mason was preceded in death by a son, Tony Sneed.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Bro. Frank Rodgers will officiate the services.

Irene Irby

COOKEVILLE -- Funeral services for Irene Irby, 85, of Cookeville, will be held Friday, Sept. 5, at 1 p.m. from the Cookeville chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Crest Lawn cemetery.

Family will receive friends Thursday, Sept. 4, from 5-7:30 p.m. and Friday, Sept. 5, from noon until time of services at the funeral home.

Mrs. Irby died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 20, 1922, in Putnam County to the late John Eldridge and Altie Smith.

Mrs. Irby was a member of Wrights Chapel Methodist Church.

Her family includes a son and daughter-in-law, Morris and Linda Irby; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Edith Irby and Mae and Charles Carr, all of Cookeville; four sisters, Eddie Mae Smith and Nina Carver, both of Cookeville, and Dorothy Mullins and Elizabeth Bohannon, both of Algood; five grandchildren, Jacqueline Lankford, Harold, Eric and Robin Smith and Jerome Cummings; five great-grandchildren; and a very special friend, Marion Prigmore.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Irby was preceded in death by her husband, Morris Irby Sr.; two sons, Harry Gray Smith and David Lee Irby; four sisters, Francis Apple, Roberta West, Maggie Smith and Verbie Lee Mullins; two brothers, Joe and John Lewis Eldridge; and a daughter-in-law, Gladys Gardenhire Smith.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Revs. Gary Wilson and Robert Utley will officiate the services.
