Alphonse 'Al' Pippert
Tuesday, Mar 2, 2004

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Centerville United Methodist Church with Tom Smith and John Vaughan officiating.

He was the son of the late Emma Powitzky and William Pippert. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He was retired as a chief operator for the gas company.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen Melvina Pippert of Centerville; a daughter, Nancy Mercer of Hendersonville; a brother, two sisters and one granddaughter.

McDonald Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Belle Bates

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at McDonald Funeral Home with E. Claude Gardner officiating. Visitation will be held from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Swiss Cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late Etta Howell and William A. Horner. She was a retired teacher.

Survivors include a daughter, Rebecca Palmer of Lewisburg; a brother, Floyd Horner of Lobelville; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Frank E. Murray

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dalton Funeral Home in Germantown, Ohio, with the Rev. Dave Kepple officiating. Burial will be in Germantown Cemetery. The family will visit with friends from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Prebble County, Ohio, native was the son of the late Pearl Murray and Maude McKee Murray. He was married to Jenice Collins Murray who preceded him in death. Mr. Murray was a 48-year member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church in Germantown, Ohio.

Survivors include one daughter, Mendy (Rodney) Shaw of Columbia; one granddaughter, Peggy (Jerry) Varney of Springboro, Ohio; one great-grandson, Jason (Clariza) Varney of Stone Park, Ill.; one brother, Elmer Murray of Germantown, Ohio; one sister, Lorene Puls of Farmersville, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Frances Bridge.

Mrs. Alta Powers
Tuesday, Mar 2, 2004

Services for Mrs. Powers will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with the Rev. Phillip Wright officiating.

Visitation with the family will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery.

The Maury County native was the daughter of the late Herschel Reams Nowlin and the late Annie Potts Nowlin and was the widow of O.B. Powers who died in 1978.

She was a 1934 graduate of Hay Long High School. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant.

She is survived by a daughter, Sally (John) Matlack of Columbia; a son, Richard R. (Pat) Powers of Mt. Pleasant; one granddaughter, Stephanie A. Powers of Mt. Pleasant; three grandsons, Michael J. (Margaret) Matlack of Dallas, Texas, Matthew P. (Shannon) Matlack of Columbia, Mo., Dr. R. Reams Powers (Carey) of Columbia; three great-grandchildren, Betsy Matlack and Sam Matlack, both of Dallas, Texas, and Margaret Patton Powers of Columbia.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 202 S. Main St., Mt. Pleasant, TN 38474.

Pallbearers will be Jim Lindsey, Willie Boyd, Walter Locke, Paul Sands, Tom Hardin, Wally Couch, Roger Gilliam, Vace Brummal and Jerry Kennedy.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant and the nurses and staff at NHC, Columbia.

Janain Mullins

PULASKI - Mrs. Ellen Janain Cannon Mullins, 54, resident of Lewisburg Highway in Pulaski, died Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Silver Hills Cemetery in Frostproof, Fla., with the Rev. Darrol Hood officiating.

Marion Nelson Funeral Home of Frostproof is in charge of arrangements. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

The Miami, Fla., native was the daughter of Christine Anderson Cannon Colbourne of Babson Park, Fla., and the late Eddie Cannon. She was a homemaker and member of the Baptist faith.

Survivors in addition to her mother include her husband, Dannie Paul Mullins of Pulaski; one daughter, Tammy Hutto of Chapel Hill; one grandson, Matthew Hutto of Chapel Hill; one sister, Teresa Norris of Babson Park, Fla.; and one brother, Mike Cannon of Frostproof, Fla.

She was preceded in death by one son, Thomas E. Crews in 1976.

Ms. Beatrice E. Cathey

WILLIAMSPORT - Ms. Beatrice E. Cathey, 79, of Williamsport, died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Arrow Rock Church of Christ with Bro. Henry Clay Webster officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church. Burial will be in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.

She was the fifth of nine children born to the late Brooks and Sadie Cathey. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. She attended the public schools of Hickman County and Maury County. She was a retiree of the Maury County Impact Centers, Inc. She was a member of Arrow Rock Church of Christ.

Survivors include her brothers, Lonnie (Georgia) Cathey of Columbia, Brooks Cathey of Chicago, Ill., and Ed (Janice) Cathey of Nashville; sisters, Alexine (Ulesser) Bills of Nashville and Else M. McLaughlin of Chicago, Ill.; a devoted nephew, James Henry (Almeta) Cathey of Chicago, Ill.; an aunt, Edmonia Penn of Chicago, Ill.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Roundtree, Napier & Ogilvies Columbia Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Robert Forrest Lowder

ALBERMARLE, N.C. - Mr. Robert Forrest Lowder, 77, of Albermarle, N.C., died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at his residence.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Stony Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Leslee Wray. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday and the body will lie in state at Stanly Funeral Home, Inc. in Albermarle, N.C., until 30 minutes prior to service. Burial will be in Stanly Gardens of Memory.

The North Carolina native was the son of William Pemberton and Maude Forrest Lowder. He was a retired store manager with Belk. He worked at Belk Stores in Columbia, Monroe, N.C., Shelby, N.C., Forest City, N.C., and Sumter, S.C.

He was a member of Stony Hill United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a former member of Albemarle Optimist Club and other Optimist Clubs. He was the former president of Merchants Association in Sumter, S.C., and a member of the Administrative Board at Stony Hill UMC. He was preceded in death in 2002 by a brother, Hoyle Lowder.

Survivors include his wife, Hettie Sikes Lowder; two sons, Phillip W. Lowder of Albermarle, N.C., and Kevin F. Lowder of Conway, S.C. ; three sisters, Alberta Boggan of Albemarle, N.C., Vernie Forrester of Charlotte, N.C., and Eileen Birmingham of Charlotte, N.C.

Mr. Ruskin A. Vest

MT. PLEASANT - Mr. Ruskin A. Vest ,85, a resident of Canaan Road near Mt. Pleasant, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at his home.

Services for Mr. Vest will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Dr. Bill Thrasher and Randy Kersey officiating. Burial will be in the Arlington Cemetery. The family will visit with friends from 4-8 p.m. Friday and from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

The Mt. Pleasant native was the son of the late Solomon Alexander and Emma Bailey Vest. He was a graduate of Hay Long High School and attended Georgia Institute of Technology for two years before entering the Army Air Corps in 1941 where he was a navigational instructor.

In 1945, he left the army as a lieutenant to return to work in Mt. Pleasant at Victor Chemical Works. He married Melba Robinette on May 24, 1947. Later he and Will C. Robinette purchased Thompson Dairy in Mt. Pleasant which they operated until 1958 merging into Jersey Pride Creamery. He then went to work at Industrial Products Company, Inc., a rockwool manufacturer and fiberglass distributor, where he was eventually president and owner. He remained active in the business. He was also owner of Southeastern Shirt in Mt. Pleasant and Southeastern Pant in Centerville.

He was a cattle farmer and an avid outdoorsman. Being active in community affairs, he served as a director on the Maury County Hospital Board and Director for the Middle Tennessee Bank. He served as city commissioner for Mt. Pleasant, was president of First Utility Gas Company in Mt. Pleasant and served on the Maury County Airport Board. He was a member of the Main Street Church of Christ.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Eleanor (John Ball) Howard of Edisto Island, S.C.; a son, Ruskin A. "Rusty" (Karen) Vest Jr. of Columbia; a sister, Sarah Wilhite of Bolivar; five grandchildren, Ruskin A. "Zan" Vest III, Rachel Elizabeth Vest and Margaret Anne Vest, all of Columbia, and Sarah Ethel Howard and John Ball Howard Jr., both of Edisto Island, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William Lewis Vest.

Pallbearers will be Hunter Robinette, Justin Robinette, Richard E. Wilhite, Larry Wilhite, Dr. Jerry Wilhite, Harold Wilhite, Dr. Frank Wilhite, Kenneth Weiss and Earl Bentz.

Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Industrial Products, Inc.

The family wishes to express special thanks to Dr. Janice Vinson and Cardiology Unit at Maury Regional Hospital, staff of Maury Regional Hospital, Dr. Robert Bain, Dr. James Barr and Dr. Jim Marshall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Columbia Academy, 1101 West 7th St., Columbia, TN 38401 or Hospice of Highland Rim, 2014 Elmer Pogue Drive, Columbia, TN 38401.

Donald Mark 'Don' Lewis

Mr. Donald Mark "Don" Lewis, 64 years old, has finally won his battle with lung cancer, as he rests in peace in the loving arms of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Services for Mr. Lewis will be conducted Friday evening, at 6 p.m. at the Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with the Rev. Price Keller officiating. The family will visit with friends from 3-6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

The Detroit, Mich., native was the son of the late Mark and Jennie McLellan Lewis and husband of Sandra "Sandy" Buckholz Lewis. He was a resident of Iris Drive in Mt. Pleasant and op-tech for the Saturn Corporation. He was a communicant of St. Catherine Catholic Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Peggy L. (Spencer) Lutz of South Bend, Ind., and Donna (Harry "Spoon") Symlar of Columbia; six grandchildren, Ashley Lutz, Taylor Lutz, Ryan Lutz and Drew Lutz, all of South Bend, Ind., and Devin Symlar and Byce Symlar; two nieces and five nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Peggy Durf and Kay Wickline; and one brother, Ronald Lewis.

Honorary pallbearers will Dr. C. Houston Jameson III and the staff of Maury regional Hospital Oncology Unit.
