Kirkland - Stephens (2004-06-01)
The colors of love take many forms for Katie Kirkland and her fiancee, Keith Stephens.
Kirkland wrote, "The Russian painter Marc Chagall once remarked, `In our life there is a single color, as on an artist's palette, which provides the meaning of life and art. It is the color of love.' We begin with the love of family, find our romantic love and share in God's eternal love. There can be no greater influence in one's life than these stages and colors of love."
The first love is the true blue love of family.
"`True blue' denotes the fact that our families' love for us is steadfast and unconditional," Kirkland explained. "Although Keith and I are both from families of divorce, we keep in close contact with each side.
"My grandmother has served as my mother figure," she wrote. "Keith has an older brother and sister. I am the oldest of my siblings with two sisters and a brother. A family's love encompasses you all the days of your life."
A sweetheart's love, Kirkland wrote, is often characterized by the color red, as in the opening lines of the poem by Robert Burns: "O, my love is like a red, red rose/that's newly sprung in June." Kirkland also quoted John Milton's "Paradise Lost," in which he wrote, "Celestial rosy red" is "love's proper hue."
The color chosen for their wedding is purple, Kirkland wrote, because it is her favorite color.
The ultimate love is the one that binds all other types of love together, Kirkland wrote.
"God's love is a pure white love. It is without blemish. It is everlasting and free to all," she wrote. "Keith and I were both raised in church and now attend East Maryville Baptist. God's love gives us grace for today and strength and hope for each tomorrow."
The couple's love story began two years ago after Stephens' cousin introduced them. Their subsequent first date was to see a movie, "Double Jeopardy," and have dinner at TGI Friday's. They became engaged at a softball tournament in Orlando, Kirkland recalled. June 26 is the day they have chosen for their wedding.
"Whether it is the true blue love of family, the ardent red love of the betrothed or the pure white love of God, there is no doubt that the colors of love highlight our everyday lives," Kirkland wrote. "On June 26, 2004, all of these colors will unite to create the palette of our new life as husband and wife."
Katie Kirkland of Maryville, daughter of Robby and Penny Kirkland of Maryville and Jacque Raines of Murfreesboro, is engaged to marry Keith Stephens of Alcoa, son of Connie Giles of Alcoa and Frank Stephens of Friendsville, at 5 p.m. June 26 at East Maryville Baptist Church. Eric Stitts will officiate.
Diane Swaney of Maryville will be maid of honor. Bridesmaids will be Kelli Swaney, Kristi Carpenter and Lisa Kidd, all of Maryville, Brandy Bledsoe of Alcoa and Tami Kirkland of Knoxville.
Dyron Bledsoe of Alcoa will serve as best man. Groomsmen will be Josh Stevens of Maryville, Rick Hess of Alcoa, Jon Snyder of Maryville, Derek Bledsoe of Alcoa and Josh Wade of Maryville.
A reception will be held at the church following the ceremony.
A surprise wedding trip has been planned by the bridegroom-elect.
The future bride is a 1997 graduate of Heritage High School and received a master's degree in education in 2002 from the University of Tennessee. She is a teacher at William Blount Middle School.
