Merle Katz
Graveside services for Merle Mayo Katz, 90, were held Oct. 20, 2004, at Shearith Israel Cemetery, Dallas, with Rabbi William G. Gershon officiating.
Katz was born Oct. 11, 1914, on a farm near Mabank to David Jackson Mayo and Alma Summerall Mayo, and died Oct. 19, 2004, after a short illness.
She graduated from Mabank High School in 1933, moved to Dallas, attended the Parkland Hospital School of Nursing and received an R.N. in 1936.
She worked in an infectious disease unit at Parkland where she met an intern, Sol Katz, whom she would marry. His combat service in World War II interrupted their romance and she moved to Austin and the University of Texas, where she received her bachelor of science degree in 1941.
While in Austin, she was appointed by Gov. Lee O'Daniel to the Texas State Commission on Nursing, and became an advocate for university-based education in nursing.
She moved back to Dallas and joined the faculty of the Parkland School of Nursing, serving as the director of nursing education.
In 1946, she received her master's degree in education from Southern Methodist University. Her thesis on the development of collegiate schools of nursing became the template for the nursing curriculum at Texas Women's University after it merged with the Parkland School of Nursing.
She was director of nursing education at Children's Medical Center until she married and retired in 1950.
She then devoted her time to her family and was an enthusiastic volunteer in the Jewish Community in Dallas, serving in leadership positions in various organizations, including the Congregation Shearith Israel Sisterhood and the Dallas Chapter of Hadassah, where she became a life-time member.
In her later years, she was an avid world traveler.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Dr. Sol Katz; children, Sharon and Charles Levin, and Michael and Linnie Katz; sister, Eva Lee Pritchett, Dallas; grandchildren, Adam, David and Daniel Levin, and Charles and Clifford Katz.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Juanita Key
Funeral services for Juanita Key, 84, formerly of Gun Barrel City, and for the past two years a resident of Irving and Dallas, were held in Irving and burial was in Tool.
Key died Oct. 24, 2004, in an Irving hospital after an illness of several weeks.
Survivors include her sons, Burrel Hambrick and wife Mary, Dallas; Johnny Melvin Hambrick and wife Barbara, Gun Barrel City; Bobby Glen Johnson and wife Pat, Springfield, Mo.; Royce Johnson and wife Sandy, Irving; Gary Johnson and wife Genita, Irving; daughter, Juanita Faye Thorne, Laos, N.M.; 16 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; sisters, Faye Hatcher, Irving; Edith McLaughlin, Irving; Maurine Criss, Garland; Ruby Usleton and husband, Ovis, Gun Barrel City.

George A. Cobbs
Services for George A. Cobbs, 82, Mabank, were held Oct. 31, 2004, at the First Baptist Church, Mabank with Dr. James Harms and the Rev. Steve Glosup officiating. Burial was in Elm Grove Cemetery under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home in Mabank.
Cobbs was born Dec. 25, 1921, in Dallas and died Oct. 28, 2004, in Athens. He was preceded in death by his father, Leo David Cobbs, and his mother, Georgia Ann (Swindell) Cobbs.
He was a machinist. Previously of Fairview and Irving, he was a Mabank resident for 16 years. He was a Mason and member of the Roddy Lodge of Mabank.
Survivors include his wife, Mary P. Cobbs, Mabank; sons, Marc Cobbs, Allen; Sam Penny, Houston; and Mark Penny, Mabank; daughters, Cindy Harney, Falls Church, Va.; Brenda Guiterrez, Mabank; 14 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, brother, Dr. Louis Cobbs; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Honorary pallbearers were the Men's Fellowship Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church, Mabank.

Dorothy Lee McLemore
Services for Dorothy Lee McLemore, 75, Kemp, were held Nov. 1, 2004, in the Eubank Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James Renfro and Robert Long officiating. Burial was in Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home in Mabank.
McLemore was born Jan. 11, 1929, in Jasper and died Oct. 30, 2004, in Kemp. She was preceded in death by her mother, Birtha Kelly, and her father, Clarence Swilley.
She was a homemaker and member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Wives of the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II.
Survivors include her husband, John D. McLemore; daughters, Lynda Gayle Hoops, Johnnye Sue Salmons and husband Ralph; and Bertha Eunice Williams and husband Steve; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; other family members and many friends.

Annie Starek
Services of remembrance were held for Annie Starek, 96, Kemp, at Anderson Clayton Bros. Funeral Home in Kemp November 2, 2004, with the Rev. Larry Porch officiating.
Interment followed at the King Cemetery in Henderson County.
She was born in Czechoslovakia, Feb. 28, 1908, to Joseph and Monika Balajka, and died in Corsicana Oct. 30, 2004.
She married Frank Starek, Jr. on Nov. 10, 1926.
They shared 66 years together, living mostly in Ellis and Henderson Counties.
She was a homemaker, loved her gardening and had the prettiest garden around, with lots of flowers.
She loved every kind of flower.
She also loved fishing, If anyone mentioned fishing, she was ready to go. She holds the record in the family for catching the biggest fish at 87 years old, a 55 pound yellow cat, caught in the pond by her home.
She loved to cook and her kitchen always smelled of fresh yeast rolls, donuts and cinnamon rolls.
She enjoyed having friends stop by, always offering them a sweet roll or something. She will be missed by all.
Her husband, Frank, preceded her in death in 1993. Brothers, Paul and Pete Balajka; sisters, Mary Bistricky and Emily Stanek; and 2 granddaughters, Linda Kay Starek Thompson and Rhonda Starek, also preceded her
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Frances and Don Sheppard of Corsicana, Joan and Ray Stewart of Ennis, and Dorothy and Kenneth Baker of Kemp; sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Betty Starek of Kemp, and Richard and Cherris Starek of Mt. Vernon; 16 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren; and 9 great great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Dennis Starek, Tracy Thompson, Larry Joe Starek, Keith Starek, Jamie Starek, and Scott Lamb.
Honorary pallbearers were Dwayne Baker and Timmy Stewart.

Cecil Owen
Services for Cecil "Bubba" Owen, 49, Eustace, were held at Eubank Memorial Chapel, Nov. 5, 2004, with the Rev. Dave Davis officiating.
Interment was in Grove Hill Memorial Park under the direction off Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home in Mabank.
Owen was born Aug. 14, 1955, in Dallas and died Nov. 1, 2004, in Gun Barrel City.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Peggy Ann (Siebert) Owen and father, Luther Denman Owen.
He was an electrician and lived in Eustace for 10 years. Previously of Dallas, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army and member of American Legion Post No. 310.
Survivors include his daughters, Paula Owen, Basking Ridge, N.J.; and Tiphani Connolly and husband, Paul, Kilgore; three grandchildren; brother, Paul Denman Owen, and wife, Kim, Quinlan; sister, Kimberly Owen, The Colony; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Nettie Pearl Trammell
Services for Nettie Pearl Trammell, 90, Eustace, were held Nov. 4, 2004, in the First Baptist Church of Eustace with the Rev. Paul McKinney officiating.
Interment was in Payne Springs Cemetery under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home in Mabank.
Trammell was born Nov. 10, 1913, in Henderson County and died Nov. 2, 2004, in Athens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Trammell; daughter, Lavern McLendon; four sisters, three brothers, mother, Annie Jane (Griffith) Huddleston; and father, George Huddleston.
She was a homemaker and a lifetime resident of Eustace.
Survivors include her niece, Rosemary Abbott and husband, Jack, Eustace; grandchildren, Jimmie and JoLynn Trammell; great-grandchild, Robert Blake Trammell; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Pallbearers were Harold Griffith, Royce Mosley, Colton Walker, Bill Arnold, Robert Pickle and Sonny Hodge.

Georgia Mayfield
Services for Georgia Ellon Mayfield, 83, Trinidad, were held Dec. 11, 2004, at the Cedar Creek Lake United Methodist Church in Tool with Chuck Webber officiating. Burial was in the Little Bethel Cemetery in Duncanville under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home of Seven Points.
Mayfield was born Nov. 17, 1921, in Greenville to Mason and Isabell Funderburg, and died Dec. 7, 2004, in Tyler.
She was an active member of the Cedar Creek Lake United Methodist Church serving with the UMW and working in the office.
Survivors include her daughter, Joan Staggs, Trinidad; brother, Morris Funderburg, Winona; sister Pat Hassell, Richardson; grandchildren, Sherry Frevele, Kenneth L. Staggs Jr., Kevin Lee Staggs; and Troy Lane Staggs; great-grandchildren, Sarah Stewart, Jessica Staggs, Zachary Staggs and Erin Staggs; great-great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Spencer, Anthony Stewart and Isabella Stewart.

William Beatte Sr.
Services for William "Bill" Beatte Sr., 76, Mabank, were held Dec. 11, 2004, in the Eubank Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Denny Gorena officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home of Mabank.
Beatte was born July 25, 1928, in Oshkosh, Neb., and died Dec. 3, 2004, in Gun Barrel City. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Beatte and mother, Eula Irene (Hampton) Beatte.
He was employed in maintenance and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Previously of Dallas, he lived in Mabank for 10 years.
Survivors include his sons, Jay Dee Beatte, Mabank; Mark Beatte and wife, Candy, Allen; Larry Beatte and wife, Crystal, Quinlan; Clint Beatte and wife, Roseanne, Philadelphia, Pa.; daughters, Cathy Beatte, Philadelphia, Pa.; JoAnn Elam and husband, Kirk, Oregon; Susan Pinson and husband, Floyd, Red Oak; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other family members and a host of friends.

Norma P. Minyard
Services for Norma P. "Polly" Minyard, 81, Tyler, were held Dec. 8, 2004, at Oaklawn Cemetery with Pastor Elwood Stetson officiating.
Arrangements were under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home of Mabank.
Minyard was born May 7, 1923, in Beaver Falls, Pa., and died Dec. 7, 2004, in Tyler, She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Minyard Jr. in 1977; and parents, Paul Stanley and Etha Stanley.
She was a bookkeeper and veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II as an airplane mechanic.
Previously of Dallas, she lived in Tyler for 7 years. She was a volunteer worker at ETMC and had many friends at the Atria Willow Park Retirement Center in Tyler.
Survivors include her sons, Bill Minyard and wife, Deborah, Whitehouse; Jon David Minyard and wife, Nancy, Dallas; daughter, Paula Sneed and husband, Everett, Fort Davis; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other family members and a host of friends.

Margie Rawlinson
Services for Margie L. Rawlinson, 73, Gun Barrel City, were held Dec. 15, 2004, at Oaklawn Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Hensley officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home of Mabank.
Rawlinson was born May 1, 1931, in Amarillo and died Dec. 11, 2004, in Gun Barrel City. She was preceded in death by her father, Selmer Robert Watson and mother, Margie Dove (Todd) Watson.
Previously of Dallas, she lived in Gun Barrel City for 14 years. She was a loving and caring wife and mother, and a loving friend to all who knew her.
Survivors include her husband, Travis Rawlinson, Gun Barrel City; son, Robert Crowe and wife, Debbie, Gun Barrel City; daughter, Patti Smith and husband, Bill, Alvarado; stepsons, Travis Rawlinson Jr., and Robert Rawlinson, Irving; stepdaughter, Bettina Farrow, Irving; daughter-in-law, Debra Newton, Gun Barrel City; seven grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Violet Bradley, Ruidoso, N.M.
