Courtenay O’Bryant

Courtenay O’Bryant, 25, of Huntsville was born Sept. 8, 1980 and passed away June 16, 2006. Funeral services will be held June 24, 2006 at 1 p.m. at Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 426 Highway 190 East, under the direction of Williams and Sons Funeral Home. Elder Terry Cooper will officiate. Interment will follow at Martha Chapel Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Lloyd O’Bryant, Tycoma Willis, Tavarus O’Bryant, Kevin Butler, Quincy Baker, and Jeremy Gage.

Mr. O’Bryant was a truck driver and member of Galilee Church of God in Christ.

He is survived by his father, James Allen of Texas City; mother Helen O’Bryant; sons, Courtenay Jermaine O’Bryant, Jr. of Huntsville and Rahdarius Dewayne-Keith O’Bryant of Bryan; brother, Kelvin Allen of Huntsville; sisters, La Desha O’Bryant of Huntsville, Shanda O’Bryant of Huntsville and Ari Allen of New Orleans, La.; grandparents, O’Neal and Luberta Perry of Huntsville and Verdell Mitchell of Huntsville; uncle, Rickey O’Bryant; aunt, Perronica O’Bryant; 4 nephews, 1 niece, 3 great uncles, 12 great aunts, 1 great-great uncle, 1 great-great aunt and a host of other relatives and friends.

Benjamin Leon Shorter

Benjamin Leon Shorter, 26, passed away June 18, 2006 in Houston, Texas. Funeral services for Mr. Shorter will be Saturday, July 1, 2006 at the First Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1530 10th Street. Burial will follow in the Coldspring Cemetery, in Coldspring, Texas.

Mr. Shorter is survived by his wife, Matrina D. Shorter; mother, Ruby Joyce Harrison; one son, Benjamin Leon Shorter, Jr.; one brother, Eddie Ray Harrison; stepfather, Leonard Bowden, all of Huntsville; grandparents, Connie Johnson and Harris Gaines of Houston and Jimmie Lee Shorter of Coldspring; mother-in-law, Josefina Martinez of Huntsville; father-in-law, Donald Vaughn of Huntsville; god parents, Ruby Jewel and August Wyatt of Point Blank and Billy and Doris Murray of Huntsville and a host of other relatives and friends.

H. L. Moses

H. L. Moses was born Nov. 28, 1925 to Homer Lee and Hester Virginia (Langham) Moses in Huntsville and passed away June 28, 2006 in Montgomery, Texas. He will be remembered for telling jokes and never being at a loss to come up with one on a second’s notice. He joined the US Navy when he was 19 and served in World War II. He worked as a mail carrier but his favorite pastimes were traveling, fishing, trail rides and skiing.

He was an avid family man and he cared for them very much. His survivors include daughter Bonnie Hollis and husband Carl of Huntsville, daughter Linda Ford of Montgomery and daughter Debby Evans and husband Bob of Montgomery; seven grandchildren, Kevin Hollis, Stacey Hollis Fisher, Stevenie Ford Haner, Jennifer Ford Veits, Joshua Ryan Barton, Clayton Stewart and Sherry Evans Alfonso and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wyneita, in March of 2004.

Services will be held in the Chapel of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home of Huntsville Friday June 30, 2006 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Reagan Cooksey officiating. Interment will follow at Mayes Addition of Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home.

Martha McWhirter Wolfe

Martha McWhirter Wolfe was born on July 1, 1918 in Commerce, Texas and passed away peacefully in her home June 29, 2006. She was the daughter of Ruth Grey Benge McWhirter and Joseph Grady McWhirter. Mrs. Wolfe is preceded in death by her husband Dr. James Madison Wolfe, her parents and two brothers who died in childhood.

She is survived by her son, Jim, of Livingston, and daughter Marjean Creager and her husband Rowe Creager of Huntsville, two granddaughters Jamie Kinser and her husband, Paul Kinser, Dusty Wolfe and fiance’ William Meadors of Huntsville, great grandchildren Tiffany and Dalton Kinser and their paternal grandmother Randy Rae Satory of Livingston.

Many nieces and nephews are part of the family. A special niece is Carol Wilder Harrigan of Seattle Wash.

Mrs. Wolfe always valued education. She graduated from high school through East Texas State Teachers College training school program in Commerce, and from Sam Houston State Teachers College for both undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Starting her teaching career in Riverside in 1955, Mrs. Wolfe came to Huntsville in 1957 and taught various levels for eight years before breaking barriers in the education community. In 1965, she transferred to Sam Houston High School, Huntsville’s all black high school to teach remedial reading.

In 1967 she became the reading coordinator for Huntsville ISD before becoming principal of Samuel Houston Elementary. In 1976, she became principal of Stewart Elementary where she stayed until her retirement in 1983.

Among numerous awards Mrs. Wolfe received the honor of Outstanding Elementary Principal for Region VI Service Center in 1983 and in May 2005 Huntsville ISD recognized her 26 years as Huntsville ISD educator by re-naming Stewart Elementary Library the Martha Wolfe Library and Education Center.

She and her family have been long time members of the First Christian Church where she recently researched and helped write a history of the church.

Mrs. Wolfe loved children, gardening and the company of good friends, but the brightest light of her life was her family.

Mrs. Wolfe was known by all as a generous spirit and a loving friend. She influenced countless lives through her regard for children and her respect for the dignity of all. Her smile and optimism are the legacies she leaves for us.

A service in celebration of her life will be at 10 a.m. Monday July 3 at the First Christian Church in Huntsville, Texas under the direction of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home. Family visitation will be Sunday July 2, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home. Donations in her name may be made to The First Christian Church, 1800 Avenue R, Huntsville, Texas.

Frank Hollman

Frank Hollman, 73 of Riverside, was born Sept. 24, 1932 and passed away June 27, 2006. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 1, 2006 at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church on Geneva Road at 1 p.m. under the direction of Williams and Sons Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Gospel Hill Cemetery. Pastor Dwyan Taylor will officiate. Pallbearers will be Raymond Beechum Jr., Jeffery Andrews, Jesse Hollman, Jr., Jerome Avery, Anual Kelly and Jeffery Andrews, Jr.

Mr. Hollman was a truck driver for Kroger and a member of Gospel Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Rose M. Hollman of Riverside; stepsons, Raymond Beechum, Jr. of Houston, Jeffery Andrews of Pine Bluff, Ark., Calvin Martin of Louisiana, James Martin of Orlando, Fla.; stepdaughters, Keshia Avery of Houston and Raymonda Beechum of Houston; brother Jesse James Hollman of Spring; Margaret Kelly of Huntsville, Lucille Jenkins of Huntsville; 13 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Karen Nina Oswald

Karen Nina Oswald was born June 8, 1935 and passed away July 4, 2006. A mass will be held Friday, July 7, 2006 at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen Catholic Church of Point Blank. Interment will be Monday, July 10, 2006 at Houston National Cemetery at 10:30 a.m.

Anita F. Williams

Anita F. Williams, 38, was born Nov. 1, 1967 and passed away July 4, 2006. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 8, 2006 at Bowen Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church under the direction of Williams and Sons Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Trinity Community Cemetery. Rev. Robert Thomas will officiate. Mrs. Williams was a certified nurse’s assistant. She will lie in state from noon to 1 p.m. at Bowen Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday.

Survivors include husband, Robert Williams of Houston; mother, Cecelia Rogers of Houston; maternal grandmother, Helen M. Henson of Missouri City; sons Andre Gee, Jr. of Houston and Andrew Gee of Trinity; daughters Emeakia Henson of Houston, Tiffany Henson of Trinity, and Ashley Gee of Trinity; grandsons Xaiver Henson and Davonte’ Henson; granddaughter, Otisa Cunningham; four uncles, seven aunts, three great-uncles and one great-aunt.

Cora Lee Johnson

Mrs. Cora Lee Johnson, 91, of Dodge was born April 21, 1915 and passed away June 29, 2006. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 7, 2006 at St. Mary’s Baptist Church under the direction of Williams and Sons Funeral Home. Rev. Dwyan Taylor will officiate. Burial will follow at Jeff Smith Cemetery. Pallbearers include Jeff Johnson, Jr., Ronnie Davis, Robert Earl Johnson, Charlie Massey, David Johnson and Aton Terry.

Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and member of St. Mary’s Baptist Church.

She is survived by sons James Jenkins, Cornelius Jenkins both of Huntsville, and Ezzard C. Johnson of Dodge; brother A.C. Johnson of Houston, brother Frank Johnson of Dodge, brother Jeff Johnson of Huntsville; sisters Hattie B. Massey and Virginia Moten of Dodge; 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Karen Nina Oswald

Following a brief illness, God came and took her by the hand, and they walked back to Paradise together. Karen Oswald, beloved wife, sister-in-law, aunt passed away July 4, 2006 in Conroe Regional Medical Center surrounded by her family.

Karen was born June 8, 1935, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to the late Harlan and Ella Ruth King. She married John H. Oswald June 25, 1955. Karen traveled with her husband throughout his 20 year U. S. Military Air Force career. Upon John’s retirement, in 1976, they settled in Waterwood, Texas where she was an active member of the Waterwood Women’s League and served in many capacities including President.

Karen is survived by her beloved husband John of fifty-one years, sister-in-law Joan Lansing and husband Dean, of San Antonio; brother-in-law, Robert Oswald and wife Maria of Houston; four nephews, of San Antonio and numerous great nieces and nephews

Services will be held at 11 a.m.in the St. Stephen Catholic Church in Point Blank on Friday July 7, 2006. Interment to follow Monday, July 10 at 10:30 a.m. in the Houston National Cemetery. A Rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home on Thursday July 6, 2006. The family will receive friends beginning at 6:30 p.m. before the Rosary.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

Roy Martin Steely

Roy Martin Steely was born Jan. 21, 1925 and passed away July 5, 2006. Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 9, 2006 in the Chapel of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Black Jack Cemetery.

Mr. Steely will lie in state Saturday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

H. J. Lemma

‘The Deer Man’

H.J. Lemma was born May 15, 1926 ,in Phelps, Texas, and passed away in Huntsville, Texas, July 7, 2006. He had been married to Lois Lemma for 60 years. H.J. served in the U.S. Navy and Merchant Marines during World War II. He was a tailgunner in the Navy Air Corp. He retired from the city of Houston after 34 years of service as an electrical supervisor. He designed and installed the microwave tower for the Houston Fire Department. He was a Past Master at John Sims Lodge No. 458 in New Waverly and belonged to the Arabian Temple. He was a huge supporter of the Huntsville Hornets and he broke and held Hornet football records in l942. He was known by many as the “Deer Man” because a large herd of up to 30 head of deer came by every day for his personal feeding of corn to them.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Lemma; son, Ronald James Lemma of Pasadena; daughter and husband, Pamela Jean McCoy and Standley, of Deer Park; sister-in-law, Kathrin Lemma of Baytown; grandson and wife, Wayne McCoy and Melissa; grandson, Tray McCoy, granddaughter and fiancé, Angela McCoy Cate and Mike Istre; great-granddaughter, Alexandria McCoy Cate; niece, Sandy Ford; nephew and wife, Butch Hyde and Penny; nephew and wife, Junior Hyde and Eileen and beloved pet Criket.

He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Edna Little Lemma; father, Orbain Normal Lemma; sister and brother-in-law, Murl and O.G. Hill; brother, Orbain “Son” Lemma; sister, Dorthy Lemma; brother, Alfred Lemma; best loving friends and brother and sister-in-law, Milton and Marcella Hyde; grandparents, Hannibal James Lemma and Ella Perry Lemma.

Services will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 10, 2006, in the chapel of the Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home with The Rev. James Featherstone officiating. Interment will follow at Black Jack Cemetery with Masonic graveside rites by John Sims Lodge No. 458, New Waverly. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday, July 9, 2006, from 5 to 8 p.m.

George Clifford Bryant

George Clifford Bryant, 95, born Oct. 16, 1910, to James E. and Suzie Davis Bryant, in Praque, Okla. on the Sac and Fox Reservation, passed away on July 9, 2006 at his home in Huntsville. Mr. Bryant worked most of his life as a machinist, loved fishing, and was a member of Lodge #225 Odd Fellows in Houston. He is preceded in death by his parents; a son, James E. Bryant; three sisters, Mae Ladre, Pearl Breshier, and Ida Mae Dickey; and three brothers, John Bryant, Bill Bryant, and Earl Bryant. Mr. Bryant leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 62 years, Dorothy Bryant; son, Reagan Bryant and wife Peggy; a granddaughter, Judy Meyers and husband Perry; great-granddaughters, Rachelle Norman and husband Shaun, Mellisa Arredondo and Jennifer Myers; four great-grandsons, and a nephew, Clifford Lee Bryant and wife Shirley. Mr. Bryant will lay in state throughout the day on Tuesday, July 11,2006 with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at the Huntsville Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Kirby officiating. Pallbearers will be Clifford Lee Bryant, Ed Autherholt, David Autherholt, Willie Bell, Bud Sconce, and Steven Myers. Honorary pallbearers will be David Provost and Terry Henderson. Interment will follow in Falba cemetery in Huntsville under the direction of Huntsville Funeral Home.

Miladeen Baisdon

Funeral services for Miladeen Baisdon, 76, of Beaumont will be held Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at 1p.m. at Sabine Tabernacle with Rev. James Boykin officiating. Interment will follow at 5 p.m. in Clines Prairie Cemetery in Huntsville. Visitation will begin Tuesday, at 5 and last until 8 p.m. at Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Baisdon was born Jan. 5, 1930 in Warren, Texas and passed away July 10, 2006 at her residence. She was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother and a longtime member of the Sabine Tabernacle.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, James Aaron Baisdon of Beaumont; sons, Larry Baisdon and wife, Kathy of Pagosa Springs, Colo. and Randy Baisdon and wife, Sabrina of Beaumont; grandchildren, Travis Baisdon, Hannah Baisdon and Sarah Baisdon; sisters, Alyce Poe and Ola Vee Proellochs and husband, Arnold; sister-in-law, Dolores Nolen.

Serving as pallbearers will be Cliff Poe, Dewayne Poe, Eric Proellochs, David Winn, James K. Williams and Terry Fulgham.
