Garza
Jesus Garza, 79, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, following a long illness. Mr. Garza was born in George West. He retired from Harkins Company as a heavy equipment operator.
A prayer service was held Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. at the Templo El Sacrificio Church in Alice. The funeral was held Friday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. at the same location. Burial followed at the Collins Cemetery.
Mr. Garza was preceded in death by his wife, Rita, and a son, Abelardo Garza.
Survivors include five sons, Alejandro (Nellie) Garza and Jose Abel (Mary Jane) Garza, all of Alice, Enrique (Teru) Garza and Henry Garza, all of Pleasanton, and Jesus (Cheva) Garza Jr. of Dallas; three daughters, Gloria (Melvin) Schumacher and Elfida (David) Garcia, all of Alice, and Aurora “Gogie” (Robert) Garcia of Dallas; one brother, Victoriano Garza of Edinburg; five sisters, Eva Muñoz, Tila Cantu and Martha Lopez, all of Edinburg, Petra Garza of Alvin and Ciprana Negrite of Rosenburg; 28 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren.
Roberson Funeral Home, Alice

Hermes
Ida Marie Hermes, 91, of Pleasanton died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, in Pleasanton. She was born March 4, 1911, in Hickory, Okla., to B.O. and Olive Ann (Shaw) Edwards. Mrs. Hermes was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Hermes; and three sons, Clarence “Bud” Hermes, George Hermes and James Hermes.
Survivors include two sons, Henry H. (Jo) Hermes and F. Paul (Clara) Hermes of Pleasanton; a daughter, Jean Brown of Dilley; two daughters-in-law, Peggy (Hermes) Gilmore of George West and Edna Hermes of Henderson, Ky.; 28 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 4 to 7 p.m. at Peters Funeral Home in Cotulla.
A graveside service will be held Thursday (tomorrow) at 1 p.m. at the Dilley Cemetery with Pastor Evelyn Glazener-Cooney officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Peters Funeral Home, Cotulla.

Sliva
Boyce Sliva, 63, of Devine died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in San Antonio.
He was preceded in death by his father, Eddie Edward Sliva Sr. (killed in World War II); his mother, Erna Sliva; and a brother, Eddie Edward Sliva Jr. (killed in the Korean War).
Survivors include his wife, Collie Sliva of Devine; sons, Dick (Twyla) McGee of San Antonio and Dwayne Eddie and April Sliva of Premont; a daughter, Shana Thompson of Devine; a brother, Royce Sliva of Three Rivers; a sister, Ernell Meyer of Three Rivers; and eight grandchildren.
Visitation was held Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home in Devine. The funeral was conducted Friday in the chapel of the Hurley Funeral Home with the Rev. Craig Sturm officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to VNA Hospice Inpatient Center, 9303 Cinnamon Hill, San Antonio, TX 78217.

Stewart
Sue Terry Stewart, 96, of George West died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at Live Oak Nursing Center.
Visitation will be held tomorrow (Thursday) from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Galloway Funeral Home chapel in George West.
The funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in George West, with the Rev. Mel Hazlewood officiating. Burial will follow at the George West Cemetery.
Mrs. Stewart was born on Nov. 28, 1905, to George W. and Martha (Terry) Terry in Odessa. She married Luther Hampton Stewart in Beeville on May 4, 1931. She was a retired bookkeeper at First National Bank in George West and was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Live Oak Study Club as well as several other Live Oak County organizations.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband on April 23, 1993.
Survivors include a daughter, Margie Stewart George and husband Joe of Goliad; two sons, James Stewart and wife Elizabeth and Lonnie Stewart and wife Addie, all of George West; seven grandchildren, Susan Hilsman of Warrenton, Mo., Kay Merkel of Merrill, Wis., Stephen Stewart of George West, Melissa Hall of Beeville and Crystal, Kenneth and Kayla Stewart, all of George West; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.

Verastegui
Martina Verastegui, 95, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at her residence. She was born in Oakville on Oct. 22, 1906, to Santos and Catarina (Bustos) Nerios. She was a housewife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.
Mrs. Verastegui was preceded in death by her husband; three sons; her parents; and one granddaughter.
Survivors include three daughters, Petra Verastegui and Florentina Moya of George West and Dominga V. Perez of Lamesa; one brother, Nicolas Nerios of Mathis; one sister, Guadalupe Chaves of Lamesa; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Rosary was recited Friday at 8 p.m. at St. George Catholic Church in George West. Funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. George.
Interment followed at the George West Cemetery.

Martin
Mrs. Luceil (Blackmon) Martin, 95, of George West died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Live Oak Nursing Center. Mrs. Martin was born Sept. 29, 1907, in Dinero to William David and Orie (Pugh) Blackmon. She married June Travis Martin on Oct. 19, 1929, in George West. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of The Good Shepherd.
The funeral was held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of The Good Shepherd in George West, with the Rev. Ben Wright officiating. Burial followed in the Gussettville Cemetery in Gussettville.
Pallbearers were David Altenhoff, Dwight Altenhoff, Terry Cole, Paul Dirks, Josef Martin and Robert Odin McWilliams.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, June Travis Martin, on Nov. 21, 1975.
Survivors include a son, Travis (Dita) Martin of George West; two daughters, Marjorie (Darvin) Altenhoff of Gruene and Billie June (Robert) Dirks of George West; two sisters, Bula Barry and Ann Fair, both of George West; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Contributions may be made to The Episcopal Church of The Good Shepherd Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 1582, George West, TX 78022.

Carvajal
Florinda Carvajal, 42, of George West died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at a San Antonio hospital. Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Galloway & Sons Chapel in George West, followed by a Rosary this evening at 8 o'clock at St. George Catholic Church. The funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. George Church, with Father Joseph Olikkara officiating. Burial will follow at the George West Cemetery.
Mrs. Carvajal was born Feb. 5, 1960, in McAllen to Juan and Nina (Dominguez) Colunga of George West. She married David Carvajal on Oct. 18, 1976 in George West. She was a homemaker and member of St. George Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jacob David Carvajal; a grandson, Gabriel Isaiah Valadez; a granddaughter, Jasmine Nicole Valadez; and a brother, Juan Colunga Jr.
Survivors include her husband, David Carvajal; two daughters, Rhonda Jean Carvajal and Nina Marie Carvajal; three sisters, Catherine Colunga, Maria Zuniga and Delma Gutierrez; her parents, Juan and Nina Colunga; and two brothers, Jose Colunga and Rosendo Colunga, all of George West.

Hughes
Tula Mae (Holland) Hughes, 70, of Kingsbury died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Nov. 8.
Visitation was held Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Goetz Funeral Home in Seguin. Interment was Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Clegg Cemetery in Clegg with the Rev. David Eikenburg and Pastors Layne and Pamela Dietz officiating.
Mrs. Hughes was born Feb. 4, 1932, in Clegg to Delonia and Emma Mae (Birkett) Holland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Troy Hughes; brothers, D.L. Holland and Elmore Holland; sisters, Agnes Work, Jewell Holland and Opal Holland; and a grandson, Davy Dubose.
Survivors include three daughters, Sharon Mae (David) Dubose of Kingsbury, Brenda Joyce (Kenneth) Uhr and Patricia Powell, all of Seguin; two sisters, Ethel (Wyatt) Rouse of Alvin and Bennie Hedrick of Arkansas; two brothers, Eugene (Teresa) Holland and James (Louise) Holland, all of Beeville; five grandchildren, Eric Uhr, Chelsie Uhr, Kimberly Dubose, J.D. Powell and Crystal Powell; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Arrangements were under the direction of Goetz Funeral Home, Seguin.

Moser
Johnny S. Moser, 66, a six-year resident of Bulverde, went to join his wife, Mary Alice, on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002. He was born in Three Rivers on Dec. 24, 1935, to Henry and Monika (Pfau) Moser. A former resident of San Antonio, and a teacher for the NISD, he had opened and taught at Holmes High School for more than 30 years. Mr. Moser was also a veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2001 Survivors include his daughters, Lynda Lawrence and her husband, Russell, and Cynthia Laljer and her husband, Charles, all of San Antonio; grandchildren, Ashlea Lawrence, Matthew Lawrence, Whitney Lawrence, Candice Laljer and Christopher Laljer; a brother, Henry Moser and his wife, Carol of Boerne; a sister, Anna Marie Bernsen and her husband, Leon of Robstown; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held Monday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m. with the recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. at Vaughan's Funeral Home. The funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Three Rivers, with Father Peter Gajda as celebrant. Burial followed in the Three Rivers Cemetery.
