Mildred Swinnea
1928 - 2004
Mildred Swinnea, 76, of Emory died Wednesday, August 18, at Baylor Health Care System.

Graveside services were held at 11:00 a.m. August 20 at Bright Star Cemetery under the direction of Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home of Emory.

She was born August 7, 1928, in Minnesota. She married Charles Swinnea in Rockwall in 1949. She was retired from Safeway grocery stores, where she worked as a butcher. Mrs. Swinnea was Catholic.

She is survived by her husband of Kadlrik.

R.D. Taylor
1927 - 2004
Services for R.D. Taylor, 77, of Yantis were held at 4:00 p.m. Monday, August 23, at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel in Quitman with Rev. Glenn Bevill officiating.

Burial followed in Salem Cemetery in Wood County. Nephews served as pallbearers.

Mr. Taylor died Saturday, August 21, in Quitman.

He was born February 26, 1927, in Cartwright, and was a lifelong resident of Wood County. He served in the Army in Japan during World War II and was a member of Salem Church of Christ. He retired from Taylor Dairy, owned Taylor Construction and was co-developer of the Taylor Addition of Lake Fork. He was also a former Wood County deputy sheriff and former member of the board of directors of Lake Fork Water Supply Corp.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Taylor in 1991; and son, John David Preston Jr., in 1980.

Survivors include daughters, Bobbie L. Smith of Gilmer and Brenda Bevill of Yantis; brothers, Otis Taylor of Alba and G.W. Taylor of Quitman; sister, Ruth Massey of Quitman; fianceé, Joy Walsh of Winnsboro; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

Terry D. Cornett
1949 - 2004
Memorial services for Terry Dean Cornett, 54, of Alba were held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church, Quitman, with Rev. Jay Jackson officiating under direction of Lowe Funeral Home, Quitman.

Mr. Cornett died August 23 in Alba.

He was born Sept. 24, 1949, in Dallas and lived in Alba since 1991.

Survivors include his wife, Terri Cornett of Alba; son, Troy Cornett of Joshua; and two grandchildren.

Mary Ann Gilby
1927 - 2004

Mary Ann Gilby, 77, of East Tawakoni died Monday, August 23.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 26, at 10:00 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Home, Rockwall, with Rev. Bob Reeves officiating.

Burial was in Rockwall Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Gilby was born August 23, 1927, in Lansing, Mich., to Roland C.S. and Leona (Crauner) Newcomb. She worked as a nurse’s aide prior to her retirement.

Mrs. Gilby is survived by her sons, Don Gilby of Wylie, Roger Gilby and wife Dianne of Merit, Ron Gilby and wife Tina of Mt. Pleasant, Mark Gilby and wife Kelly of Garland and Martin Gilby and wife Sherri of Garland; her daughters, Lori Snyder and husband Ray of Rockwall and Kelli Catchings and husband Matt of Mesquite; daughter-in-law, Marcy Gilby of North Carolina; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and cousin, Jerry Ryder of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey Rodwell Gilby Jr., in November 1994; her parents; a son, Dennis; a sister, Gertrude; and a grandson, Roger Jr.

Mary Louise Henshaw
1924 - 2004
Funeral services for Mary Louise Henshaw, 80, of Fortt Worth were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at Birchman Baptist Church. Entombment was in Greenwood Mausoleum.

Mrs. Henshaw passed away Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004.

Mary Louise was born June 23, 1924, in Hunt County. She married Clyde Jack Henshaw on Oct. 4, 1941, in Lone Oak. The couple moved to Fort Worth in 1942.

Jack, Lou and cousin Troy Hambrick established Cousin’s Cleaners in 1953. The business has been operated by Lou, Jack and their son Howie for the past 51 years.

She retired in 1995 and traveled extensively with Jack and family and friends. She volunteered as a Texas Master Gardener at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens.

She was an active member and Sunday school teacher and past WMU president at Birchman Baptist Church. She also served as the president of the South Hi Mount PTA.

She is survived by husband Clyde “Jack” Vernon Henshaw Sr. of Fort Worth; sister, Bettye Stokes and husband John of Austin; sons, Dr. Clyde Henshaw Jr. and Robert Howie Henshaw and wife Melanie of Fort Worth; daughter, Linda Tucker and husband Jim of Choctaw, Okla.; grandchildren, Michelle Duke and husband Warren of Lewisville, Eve Shields and husband Steve of Grapevine, B.J. Mathias and wife Wendy of Newberg, Ore., Max Henshaw of Fort Worth, Jeff Tucker of Oklahoma City, Okla; great-grandchildren, Chip Duke, KayLyn Duke, and Kyra Shields, and a number of nieces, nephews and many friends and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, James F. and Lottie Partridge; ten siblings; and granddaughter, Natalie Diane Henshaw.

Memorials may be made to Birchman Baptist Church Helping Hands Ministry or the Osteopathic Health Foundation Rehabilitation Center.

Greenwood Funeral Home of Fort Worth was in charge of arrangements.

Irene Horton
1913 -2004
Funeral services for Irene Horton of Quitman were held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, August 27, at Woosley Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Smith officiating.

Burial was in Woosley Cemetery. Pallbearers were Johnny Paul Oler, Jackie Don Oler, Ronnie Horton, Chuck Horton, Roy Blagburn, Jim Horton, Burric Hickman and Burr Hickman.

Mrs. Horton died Tuesday, August 24, in Quitman.

She was born in Dallas on March 17, 1913, to Bonnie Claude and Nora Criswell Tatum.

She married Roy Horton on March 29, 1929, in Dallas. She was a seamstress and member of the Woosley Baptist Church.

She is survived by: Linda and William Blagburn of Point; Tim Blagburn Norlin and Kellie of Arkansas; Henry Blagburn and Kathy of Greenville; Roy Blagburn and Tonya of Point; Brenda and Pete Blake of West Tawakoni; Burr Hickman and Brady of Balch Springs; David Hickman of Quinlan; Leann and Jason Glidewell of Quinlan; Alfred and Judy Harvey of Point; Kathy and Pryor Gowins, Alice Harvey Sanchez, David and Denise Harvey, Clay Harvey, Tim Harvey, and Mark Harvey all of Emory; and Wesley Harvey of Tyler; 11 great-grandchildren; 29 step-great-grandchildren; 13-step-great-great-grandchildren; and a great number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Horton; father Bonnie Claude Tatum; mother, Nora Criswell Tatum; three brothers, Buster Tatum, Buddy Tatum, and Ceil Tatum; and daughter, Billie Ray Harvey.

Jami Renee Liles
1966 - 2004
Services for Jami Renee Liles, 38, of Alba were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 28, at the church of Christ in Emory with David Baker and Hartley Simmons officiating.

Burial was in Colony Cemetery, Alba, under the direction of Wilson-Bartley Funeral Home, Alba.

Miss Liles died August 26 in a Grand Saline hospital. She was born July 6, 1966, in Mineola and was a longtime resident of Alba. She was a certified nurse’s aide at Green Acres Nursing Home in Emory. She was a member of the church of Christ in Emory.

Survivors include her parents, James Kenneth and Sandra Jean Eads Liles of Alba; brother, Toby Liles of Alba; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Keith Mitchell
Funeral services for Keith Mitchell were held Friday, Aug. 20, at 2:00 p.m. at Quinlan Funeral Chapel with Rev. Roger Thompson officiating. Burial followed in Brigham Cemetery.

Mr. Mitchell died Tuesday, Aug. 17, in Greenville.

He was the son of Lloyd James and Loy May McDaniel Mitchell. He worked as a plumber and was a member of the Baptist church.

Mr. Mitchell is survived by two daughters. Brenda Fox and husband Eddy of Point and Sandy Davis of Campbell; a son, Johnny Scroggins of Lone Oak; his mother, Loy Mae McDaniel of West Virginia; three sisters, Pat Robb and husband, J.D. of West Virginia, Frances White of West Virginia and Kay Wenzell of Waxahachie; and 12 grandchildren.

His father and a brother preceded him in death.

Joel A. Rabb
1921 - 2004
Funeral services for Joel A. Rabb, 83, of Commerce will be held at Mt. Carmel Cemetery Chapel in Wolfe City at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 31, with Rev. Lisa Greenwood-Wolcott officiating.

Burial will be at Mt. Carmel Cemetery at Wolfe City. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Mr. Rabb died Saturday, August 28, at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital in Sulphur Springs.

He was born in Point on May 31, 1921, to Basil Barney (B. B.) Rabb and Daisy Morris Rabb. He married Margaret (Peggy) Wood on December 25, 1944, in Boling Field, Washington, D.C.

Mr. Rabb was a retired veteran of the Army Air Corp and was also retired from Henington Publishing Co. and Wal-Mart. He was a member of Rabb Bros. American Legion Post 156 in Rains County and the National Audubon Society. He graduated from East Texas State Teachers College, received his Master’s degree from Teachers College of Columbus University, was the principal of Wylie High School, and served as superintendent of schools in Point. Mr. Rabb was a member of First United Methodist Church in Wolfe City.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Della and Steve Ging of Lodi, Calif.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Joel and Beth Rabb of Columbus, Ohio, Clinton and Suzanne Rabb of Austin, and Robert and Tina Rabb of Commerce; two sisters, Mary Beth Tuck of Commerce and Bobbye Areen of Vandalia, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and three brothers.

Elmer Sparks
1924 - 2004
A graveside service for Elmer Sparks, 80, of Emory was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 29, at Dougherty Cemetery with Rev. Earl Kernes officiating.

Mr. Sparks passed away at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, August 26, at Paris Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Rains County on April 4, 1924, to Buster and Rosa Lee Lunceford Sparks. He was a retired farmer and a member of Daugherty Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Velma Holley of North Carolina and Thelma Lindsey of New York; two brothers, Fred Sparks of Fort Worth and Carl Sparks of Mineola, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and six brothers.

Arrangements were under the direction of Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home.

Jimmie D. Varnon Sr.
1940 - 2004
Funeral services for Jimmie D. Varnon Sr., 64, of Rowlett were held at Emory Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m., August 30 with Rev. Leo Trimble and Rev. Billy Smith officiating.

Burial was in Emory City Cemetery under the direction of Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Bobby Medders, Henry Potts, Robert Sisk, Don Gowin, Robert Kile, Arthur Glen Scott, Ray Kile and Bobby Kile. Honorary pallbearers were Ruddy Lee, Finis Gordon and L. V. Lucket.

Mr. Varnon died August 24 at V.A. Health Care System.

He was born July 13, 1940, in Emory to Claude Varnon and Eva Schultz. After graduating from Emory High School, he married Virginia Mae Mitchell of Carrollton in 1959. She preceded him in death in 1986.

In 1958 he joined the U.S. Navy serving at bases throughout California, Hawaii and Midway Island. While in the Navy, he and Virginia had two sons.

After his discharge from the Navy in 1967, he established Commercial Color Corporation, a photographic development lab, and served as co-president and chief operating officer.

A lifelong animal advocate, Mr. Varnon previously held a position on the board of the Dallas chapter of the ASPCA. In the 1980s he was active in the U.S. Border Collie Handlers Association (USBCHA) – the sanctioning body for sheepdog trials throughout the United States and Canada. As a sheepdog handler, his border collies won several USBCHA Open National competitions. Jim and his border collies were also featured on the front cover of Scene Magazine, a nationally syndicated supplement to several major newspapers.

An author and publisher, Mr. Varnon wrote All About Eve, one of the first border collie working sheepdog training books. Additionally, he submitted regular contributions to printed and online publications. In the 1980s, he also wrote and published a quarterly newsletter for the USBCHA.

He married Linda Castillo in Dallas on January 15, 1993. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a retired advertising salesman. Mr. Varnon was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife of Dallas; mother, Edith Varnon of Wichita, Kan.; sons, Jimmie Varnon Jr. of Rowlett and Tony Varnon of New York, N.Y.; sister and brother-in-law, Claudette and Joe Donaldson of Wichita, Kan.; four grandchildren, Evan, Virginia Lynn, Candice and Marcus; aunt, Bettie Jane Garrett of Dallas; uncle, Truman Varnon of Dallas; nephew, Larry Donaldson of Wichita, Kan.; numerous cousins; and a host of friends.
