Robert “Ray” Armstrong
1935 - 2009
A private family service for Robert “Ray” Armstrong, 74, of Coke and formerly of Emory, was held December 24, 2009, at Liberty Cemetery in Hawkins.

Mr. Armstrong died December 13, 2009, at Trinity Mission Nursing Home in Winnsboro following a long illness. He was born August 12, 1935, in Saltillo. He married Jett Armstrong in 1978 and they lived in Emory until 2004 when they moved to Coke.

He dedicated the latter part of his life to taking care of Jett until she passed away in 2005.

Mr. Armstrong was a commercial construction superintendent for many years. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson, smoking his pipe, leather tooling, and playing poker on the computer. He passed away only 15 minutes after Jett’s birthday which would have been on December 12.

Survivors include daughters, Kristi Armstrong Ryan and husband Jeff of Lerna, Illinois, Kim White and husband Hubert of Edgewood; Kelly Roberts and husband Jeff of Coke, Tina Armstrong of Irving; son, Alton Armstrong of Allen; grandchildren, Kourtney Haas of Findlay, Illinois, Levi Laningham of Emory, Cee Jay Roberts of Coke, Joey Haas of Findlay, Illinois, Kinley Roberts of Coke; great-grandson, Cameron Brown of Findlay, Illinois; and Crystal, Jett and Ray’s canine companion of many years.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 27 years, Jett Armstrong.

Rev. Cinton Clark Rabb
1949 - 2010
Funeral services for Rev. Clinton Clark Rabb, 60, were held January 23 in the University United Methodist Church of Austin.

Rev. Rabb passed away January 17, 2010, in North Broward Medical Center in Florida as a result of injuries and trauma received during the earthquake that hit Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on January 12.

Rev. Rabb was born in Nyack, New York, on July 22, 1949. He lived in Point as a youth while his father Joe Rabb was superintendent of the Point ISD. He was raised in Wolfe City and graduated from Austin College in 1971. He received his Master’s Degree from Trinity University and a Master of Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1974. He was ordained as a United Methodist pastor in 1975.

He worked at the General Board of Global Ministries for 15 years. Prior to his appointment to the GBGM, he served as pastor in many Texas towns and communities.

Survivors include his wife Suzanne Field-Rabb; daughter, Maury Rabb of Austin; son, Tyler Rabb of San Antonio; step-children, Jennylene Scheuch and husband Gary of Missoula, Montana, Travis Payne of Greenville, South Carolina, Rev. Andrew Payne and wife Sonja of Texas City, Daniel Payne and wife Jennifer of Dallas, Matthew Payne of Austin, Claire Payne of Missoula, Montana; grandchildren, Emma and Kate Scheuch and Cooper Payne; brother, Joel Rabb of Columbus, Ohio, Robert Rabb of Campbell; sister, Della Ging of Woodbridge, California; and a multitude of relatives, friends and colleagues.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Clinton Clark Rabb Charity at www.clintonclarkrabbcharity.org.

Arrangements were under the direction of Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home in Austin.

Colleen Sue Griffith
1935 - 2010
Funeral services for Colleen Sue Griffith, 74, of East Tawakoni were held February 19 at the Emory Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Perkins officiating.

Burial followed in the Lynch Cemetery. Pallbearers were Walt Bauer, Harold Chandler, Walter Bauer, Nick Hood, G.W. Sasser, Brandon Medders, Tristan Hood and Dylan Hood.

Mrs. Griffith died February 16, 2010, at her residence. She was born in Barnsdall, Oklahoma, on July 7, 1935, to James Russell and Stasha Mae (Pasley) McCauley.

She married Raymond Griffith on December 18, 1954, in Barnsdall, Oklahoma. She was a secretary for the Texas Rehabilitation Commission and a faithful member of the Emory Baptist Church where she was president of the Fidelis Sunday School class.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond of East Tawakoni; daughters, Regina Chandler and husband Harold, and Tina Bauer and husband Walt, all of East Tawakoni; son, Jim Griffith of Royse City; grandchildren, Nick Hood, Meagan Bauer, Walter Bauer; great-grandchildren, Tristan Hood, Dylan Hood, Darren Toliver; numerous nieces and nephews; and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Russell McCauley; and grandson Jeremy Hood in 2006.

Glenna Mae Willis Hall
1913 - 2010
Funeral service for Glenna Mae Willis Hall, 97, of Emory were held February 20 at the Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel with David Baker and Michael Harris officiating.

Burial followed in the Emory City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mike Willis, Mike Harris, Chris Tombrello, Stephen Watson and Alan Harris.

Mrs. Hall died February 16, 2010, at her residence. She was born January 7, 1913, in Campbell to Marvin Earley and Frankie Shephard Willis.

She married Harry Reaves Hall on October 15, 1932, at Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage before his death. She was a retail clerk for Foley’s Department Store and a member of the Church of Christ in Emory.

Survivors include daughters, Sara Jeanne Hall Harris of Houston and Ann Hall Lieberman and husband Sheldon of Emory; son, James Lawrence Hall of Lufkin; sister, Billy Jeanne Lewis and husband Glenn of Seabrook and Emory; grandchildren, Michael Eugene Harris and wife Carol of Temple, David Wayne Harris of Houston, Karen Elizabeth Burgess and husband Timothy of Pasadena, California, Susan Elaine Tombrello and husband Richard of Huntington Beach, California, and Christopher Thomas Tombrello of Omaha, Nebraska; great-grandchildren, Lindsey Harris Watson and husband Stephen, Laura Harris, Alan Harris, Leslie Harris, Haley Burgess, Kinsey Burgess, Sasha Kaiser, Gena Kaiser and Alex Tombrello; and great-great-grandchild, Abigail Watson.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers, Gloy Willis, Junior Willis, and Gerald Willis; grandparents, Archibald Anon and Lucy Elizabeth Yancey Willis, residents of Emory for most of their lives; and son-in-law, Harrel Gene Harris of Houston.

Verna Oleta Noland
1940 - 2010
Graveside services for Verna Oleta Noland, 69, of Emory were held February 20 at the Emory City Cemetery with Rev. Dennis Maloy officiating.

Pallbearers were Virgil Noland, Ron Hall, Jerry Gordon, Marshall Noland, John Lunghoffer Jr., and Jason Noland. Honorary pallbearers were Kenny Wainwright and James Lytle.

Mrs. Noland died February 16, 2010, at her residence. She was born on June 6, 1940, in McAlester, Oklahoma, to Virgil Eugene and Mary Pernica Ramsay Marshall.

She married Junior Ray Noland on March 28, 1953, in Durant, Oklahoma. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include daughters, Darlene Noland of Emory and Penny Hall and husband Ron of Bonifay, Florida; son, Virgil Noland and wife Cyndi of West Tawakoni; sisters, Marketta Maloy of Brashear and Juanita Wilson of McAlester, Oklahoma; mother, Mary Marshall of Emory and McAlester, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Jennifer, Sharon, Sabrina, Lacy, Drenda, John, Jason, Marshall, Chelsey, Megan, and Cheyenne; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1991; husband in 2000; daughter Ivy Spence in 2006; son Jerry Noland in 1990; and granddaughter Patricia Spence in 2006.

Janis Lee Old
1942 - 2010
Funeral services for Janis Lee Old, 67, will be held Wednesday, February 24, at 11:00 a.m. at Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel in Emory with Rev. John A. Work officiating.

Burial will follow at Smyr-na Cemetery. Pallbearers are Toby Furrh, Clint Hogue, Chad Hogue, Lake Hogue and Benjamin Hogue.

Mrs. Old died February 20, 2010, at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Tyler. She was born December 20, 1942, in Emory to Truman and Murline Harrell Hogue.

She graduated from Rains High School in 1961. She spent many years with her classmates and considered them as close as brothers and sisters.

She married John D. Old on October 25, 1986, in Mineola. She was a homemaker and raised bulldogs, including a rather rare white bulldog.

She belonged to the Friendship Baptist Church in Gladewater.

Survivors include her husband, John Old of Winona; daughter, Radonna Davis (Richie) of Wills Point; sons, Rodney Paul Thompson of Los Angeles, California, Ritchie Don Thompson of Winona; mother, Murline Hogue of Emory; sister, Sherline Furrh (Wendell) of Ben Wheeler; brothers, Preston Hogue of Morton Valley, Windell Hogue (Joy) of Gladewater, Joe Paul Hogue (Lou Ann) of Mineola; sister-in-law, Pam Hogue of Gilmer; grandchildren, Ryan Davis, Renay Davis, Richie Thompson, and Rickie Thompson; extended family, Burt Sanborn, David Elliott, and Pam Thompson; numerous other family; and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1984; and brother Clois Hogue in 1991.

Visitation will be held Tuesday evening, February 23, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel.

Curtis Cosby
1939-2010
Curtis died at East Texas Medical Center of Tyler on Monday, August 9, 2010. He was born October 16, 1939 in Ennis to Oran Sibley and Lola Faye Allen. He grew up in Ennis and graduated from Ennis High School in 1958. Curtis lived in Ennis, Rockwall and Alba.

Mr. Cosby owned Cosby Garbage in Rockwall for over 29 years. After his retirement in 1999, he moved to Alba. He was a member of Lake Fork Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge in Rockwall.

He is survived by his wife, Elwanda Cosby of Alba: two sons, Curtis Wade Cosby and wife Diane of Royse City and Kyle Ray Cosby and wife Jennifer of Sulphur Springs; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carolyn Jo Cosby on April 12, 2009; and son, Mark Allen Cosby on February 12, 2010.

David Michael “Mike” Couch
1956 - 2010
Burial followed in Hooker Cemetery.

Mr. Couch died August 10, 2010, at a Greenville hospital. He was born September 29, 1956, in Kaufman to David Paul and Mattie Lene Butler Couch. He was a Baptist by faith.

Survivors include his mother of Point; brothers, Garry Lyn Couch and wife Dannette of Caddo Mills and Tommy Loyd Couch and wife Tammy of Shreveport; and nephews, Brandon and Justin Couch.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Betty Jean Sykes
1931 - 2010
Memorial services for Betty Jean Dement Sykes, 79, of Quitman were held Thursday, August 12, at the First Baptist Church of Quitman under the direction of the church and family with Bro. James Nickell officiating.

Burial will be in Willow Springs Cemetery, Emory, at a later date. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Wilson-Bartley Funeral Home of Alba.

Mrs. Sykes died Sunday, August 8, 2010, in a Tyler hospice facility.

She was born January 5, 1931, in Dallas to the late James Loomis and Maggie Bell Hutchins Dement. She had lived in Wood County for 40 years and was a member of First Baptist Church and Ruth Sunday School Class of Quitman. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include son, Paul Sykes of Quitman; daughters and husbands, Kay and Sam Cole of Longview, Pam and Tom Felt of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Cathy and Scott Faulkner of Euless; brother, Lew Dement of Springfield, Va; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, C.E. Sykes Jr.; three sisters; and two brothers.

Memorials may be made to the Willow Springs/Turner Cemetery Assoc., c/o Betty Potts, 10349 FM 514, Emory, TX 75440, or Hospice of East Texas Homeplace, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler, TX, 75701.

Margie Hooks
1928 - 2010
Burial followed in New Hope Cemetery near Mineola. Pallbearers were Kenneth Lee, Jerry Ray Tredway, David Gilmore, Jake Hooks, Thomas Strickland and Derrick Wagoner. Honorary pallbearers were Scott Tredway and John Atkins.

Mrs. Hooks died October 13, 2010, at Senior Suite Care and Rehab in Emory. She was born November 8, 1928, in Sulphur Springs to Urbane Vannie and Margie Lorine (Ashby) Chance. She married S.N. Hooks on March 4, 1950, in Dallas.

Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Hooks was employed as a seamstress in a drapery factory. She was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Point, a member of the Point Ladies Civic Club and several other organizations.

Survivors include her husband, S.N. Hooks; daughter, Lynn Hooks; and son, Allen Hooks, all of Point; sister, Nadine Tredway of Garland; grandchildren, Morgan, Michael, Jaxon, Madylyn, Preston, Arianna, Summer, Cheyenne and Jared; and numerous other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her biological mother; her father; and her beloved mother, Buena May Chance; daughter, Kay Atkins; son, Larry Hooks; grandsons, Nathan James and Keith Atkins; and sister, Pat Gilmore.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Point, Ladies Bible Class, P.O. Box ll7, Point, TX 75472.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Point Funeral Home.
