Mabel B. Charles
Aug. 14, 1903 — March 21, 2003

ROCKDALE — Services for Mabel B. Charles, 99, of Rockdale are set for 3 p.m. Monday at the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

The Rev. Vicki Averett of Trinity United Methodist Church in Thorndale will officiate. Burial will be in the Sharp Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Charles died Friday at the Renaissance Villa Nursing Home in Rockdale.

She was born in the Tracy community near Rockdale and lived in Rockdale 17 years. She was a homemaker and was a former member of the Tracy Methodist Church and was a member of the Friendship United Methodist Church. She received a 50-year certificate of membership in the Home Demonstration Association in 1977. She was also a member of the Garden Club and the Live & Like It Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis James Charles.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Merle and John Culp of Sharp and Nelda and David Pope of Horseshoe Bay; two sisters, Mary Alice Donald of Lubbock and Doris Lawson of Taylor; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 4829, Austin, Texas 78765 or to a charity of choice.

Abraham Orozco
March 16, 1930 — March 22, 2003

Services for Abraham Orozco, 73, of Bryan are set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bryan.

Monsignor John McCaffrey of St. Joseph Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church and from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the church.

Mr. Orozco died Saturday at Sheridan on Anderson.

He was born in Washington County and lived in Bryan 45 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, was ordained a deacon in the Austin Diocese in July 1984 and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an independent contractor, owning and operating the A.O. Orozco Fencing Company.

Survivors include his wife, Aurelia Orozco of Bryan; four sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph A. and Joanne Orozco and Carl A. and Christine Orozco, all of Bryan, John Edward and Pearl Orozco of Hilo, Hawaii, and James C. and Lori Orozco of Round Rock; a daughter, Mary O. Vallejo of Bryan; three brothers, Lorenzo Orozco of Austin and Ben Orozco and Mike Orozco, both of Bryan; five sisters, Marcos Beva of Snook, Lupe Arrendo and Marcilinia Maldonado, both of Somerville, Domitila Portales of College Station and Mary Robeldo of Austin; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph Church Building Fund or to St. Joseph Catholic School.

Carlos Nava Jr.
Dec. 30, 1922 — March 21, 2003

Services for Carlos Nava Jr., 80, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Teresa Catholic Church in Bryan.

The Rev. Ruiz of St. Teresa Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Nava died Friday at his home.

He was born in Laredo and was a lifelong resident of Bryan. He was retired as a construction superintendent and was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines and was a member of LULAC.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Amparo Nava.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Arthur and Pearl Nava of Bryan; two daughters and a son-in-law, Terry Marie Torres of Bryan and Sylvia and Mike Villanueva of San Antonio; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Oscar Nava of Bryan and Pete and Lucha Nava of San Antonio; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Juan Gonzales and Belia and Ignacio Carrion, all of Corpus Christi; 18 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

Judy Carol Pickens
April 29, 1944 — March 21, 2003

BUFFALO — Memorial services for Judy Carol Pickens, 58, of Buffalo are set for 10 a.m. Monday at the Miracle Christian Center in Buffalo.

The Revs. Lloyd Lane, Rodney Box, Duncan Graham and Paul Ward will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Buffalo Funeral Home.

Mrs. Pickens died Friday at her home.

She was born in Fort Worth and lived in Leon County most of her life. She helped in the founding of the Upper Room Church and was a member for 20 years. She was a homemaker and was a retired cosmetologist.

Survivors include her husband, Dick Pickens of Buffalo; a son and daughter-in-law, Kurt and Shannon Pickens of Buffalo; a daughter and son-in-law, Nedra and Chris Brown of Buffalo; two brothers and a sister-in-law, John Boykin of Buffalo and Jim and Glenda Boykin of McAllen; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Andrew John Vavra Sr.
April 22, 1925 — March 22, 2003

Services for Andrew John Vavra Sr., 77, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Monday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

Burial will be in the Bryan City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Vavra died Saturday at his home.

He was born in Burleson County and lived in Bryan many years. He was a retired truck driver and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the SPJST, where he was district director for 10 years, and was president of the New Tabor SPJST. He was also a lifelong member of the VFW.

Survivors include his wife, Lola Vavra of Bryan; two sons and daughters-in-law, Andrew J. Jr. and Pat Vavra and Alvin and Sally Vavra, all of Houston; two daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara and Tom Miller of College Station and Florence Wilder of Bryan; a sister, Lillian Barta of San Antonio; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Cirildo Rios Jr.
Nov. 27, 1971 — March 22, 2003

Services for Cirildo Rios Jr., 31, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Bryan.

The Rev. Kirby Garner of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 8 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Rios died Saturday in Bryan.

He was born in Phoenix, Ariz., and lived in Bryan 13 years. He owned and operated Mustang Dump Truck and was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include his parents, Cirildo Sr. and Guadalupe Rios of Bryan; two brothers, Daniel Rios and Ricardo Rios, both of Bryan; and a sister, Juanita Hernandez of Bryan.

Claude D. Robinson
Dec. 3, 1917 — March 21, 2003

ROCKDALE — Services for Claude D. Robinson, 85, of Rockdale are set for 11 a.m. Monday at the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

The Rev. Greg Nicoles of the First Christian Church in Lexington will officiate. Burial will be in the Rockdale I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Robinson died Friday in the Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

He was born in Milam County and lived in Rockdale since 1951, formerly living in Galveston. He was a munitions inspector for the Department of the Army. He was a member and elder at the First Christian Church in Rockdale and served as an elder for the Rockdale Christian Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Rockdale VFD and American Legion and was a former member of the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Department. He worked for the Rockdale Reporter in the circulation department.

Survivors include his wife, Bessie M. Robinson of Rockdale; a son and daughter-in-law, Errol Bernard and Dale Robinson of Spring; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra Kay and Ken Becker of Temple; a half sister, Claudelle Raymond of Cameron; a sister-in-law, Willard Carver of Cameron; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Sally A. Dockal
May 14, 1931 — March 20, 2003

SOMERVILLE — Sally A. Dockal, 71, of Somerville and formerly of Houston died Thursday in the College Station Medical Center.

Her cremains will be buried at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville.

Mrs. Dockal was born in Cherokee County and was a graduate of Stephen F. Austin University, receiving a degree in education. She taught special education classes in Houston prior to her retirement.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Elroy Dockal and Chester Cowart.

Survivors include two sisters and brothers-in-law, Janelle C. and Watson “Mack” McCreary Jr. of Joaquin and Betty Jo and Kenneth Dudley of Nacogdoches; a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas Joe and Theressa Cole of Waxahachie; a granddaughter, two nieces, two nephews, two great-nieces and four great-nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s Indian School, Chamberlain, S.D. 57326, Oaklawn Cemetery Association or to a charity of choice.
