Laverne McGinty Gilkey
April 30, 1916 — Feb. 15, 2003

Services for Laverne McGinty Gilkey, 86, of Tampa, Fla., and formerly of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

The Rev. J.W. Kornegay of the First Baptist Church of Bryan will officiate. Burial will be in the Bryan City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Gilkey died Saturday in Tampa.

She was born in Navasota and lived in Bryan from 1935 to 2001. She was retired as office manager at Brazos County Abstract and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bryan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Jack Gilkey.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Tom Gilkey and Pat Eaton of Temple Terrace, Fla.; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Allene Billeaud of Bay City, Dalgus Clark of Houston and Joyce and Otto Wisofsky of El Campo; and a grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the Development Department of LifePath Hospice, 3010 West Azeele St., Tampa, Fla. 33609.

Curtiss Leonard Lanham
Feb. 19, 1928 — Feb. 14, 2003

CAMERON — Services for Curtiss Leonard Lanham, 74, of the Sharp community are set for 10 a.m. Monday in the Kathryn W. Green Chapel of Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Cameron.

Gene Van Noord will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Hopewell Cemetery in Normangee.

Mr. Lanham died Friday at his home.

He was born in Normangee and was retired from Dow Chemical in Houston, where he worked in electrical design. He was an amateur radio operator for 42 years and was a member of the Cameron Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Billie Louise Lanham of the Sharp community; two sons, Curtiss Lynn Lanham of Houston and Bruce Alan Lanham of Nacogdoches; a sister, Joy Faye Winstead of Bullard; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Vista Care Hospice Foundation, 819 South 5th Street, Temple, Texas 76504 or the Cameron Church of Christ Building Fund, P.O. Box 203, Cameron, Texas 76520.

Maria Magdalena Zipse
May 29, 1943 — Feb. 14, 2003

CAMERON — Services for Maria Magdalena Zipse, 59, of Cameron are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Kathryn W. Green Chapel of Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Cameron.

The Rev. Billy Crow will officiate. Burial will be in the Hernandez Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Zipse died Friday in a Temple hospital.

She was born in Houston and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Klaus Richard Zipse.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas Munoz of Houston; Heinrich Zipse and Oscar Alvarez, both of Cameron; three daughters, Mary A. Leyva of Houston, Terry Munoz and Elizabeth Munoz, both of Humble; two sisters, Beatrice Avalos of Lorraine, Ohio, and Mary Longoria of Tomball; and seven grandchildren.

Mattie Jane Washington Carey
Nov. 9, 1910 — Feb. 13, 2003

Services for Mattie Jane Washington Carey, 92, of Lyons are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Christian Church in Lyons.

Elder Walter Nix Sr. of St. James Christian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Countyline Cemetery in the Centerline Community.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Jones-Washington Mortuary in Bryan.

Mrs. Carey died Thursday at her home.

She was a lifelong resident of Lyons. She was a member of St. James Christian Church where she was president of the mission, served on the usher board and sang in the choir.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Carey Jr.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, William “Biddie” and Walterene Carey of Lyons and Eddie Charles and Frederice Carey of Oak Grove, Ky.; two daughters, Dora Holliday of Lyons and Martha Yancey of San Diego; two brothers and a sister-in-law, John W. Washington Sr. and William H. and Verlene Washington, all of Lyons; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Carrie Johnson of Dallas, Cornola Moore of Lyons and Florine and William Griggs of Tampa, Fla.; 26 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Grady Coldiron
Nov. 1, 1932 — Feb. 16, 2003

ROCKDALE — Graveside services for Grady Coldiron, 70, of Milano are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Sand Grove Cemetery near Milano.

The Rev. Doug Springer of the Rockdale Full Gospel Church will officiate.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

Mr. Coldiron died Sunday at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Temple.

He was born in Milano and lived there for the past 33 years. He was an oilfield worker for Heartland Resources. He also worked as a muleskinner and served in the military during the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Coldiron of Milano; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Grady Jr. and Darlene Coldiron of Gause, Rodney and Lisa Coldiron and Ricky Lee Coldiron, all of Milano, and Andy Wayne Coldiron of Galveston; his mother, Maudie Fay Coldiron of Milano; four sisters, Teresa Smith of Bedias, Audrey Lewis, Nellie Ryan and Frankie Hibbeler, all of Milano; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Route 3 Box 21, Rockdale, Texas 76567.

Lendon Cody Locklin
July 12, 1945 — Feb. 14, 2003

ROCKDALE — Services for Lendon Cody Locklin, 57, of Houston are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

The Rev. Doug Springer of the Rockdale Full Gospel Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Locklin Cemetery in San Gabriel.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Locklin died Friday at Park Plaza Hospital in Houston.

He was born in Refugio, was raised in Thorndale and has lived in Houston since serving in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War. He attended Houston Community College and worked at Johnson Space Center and NASA Mission Control during the Apollo missions. He worked 25 years in the international travel business, first with Pan American and later with American Express Travel. As a teenager, he played the saxophone and traveled with a band called the Sonics.

Survivors include his mother, Frances Hardin Locklin of Port Alto; five sisters, Jane Ann King of Port Alto, Linda Jo Maddox and Debbie Marie Gryder, both of Houston, Mary Ellen Thornton of Austin and Donna Beth Richardson of Deland, Fla.; three nieces; four nephews; two great-nephews; and two cousins.

Margaret H. Richards
June 27, 1906 — Feb. 16, 2003

Graveside services for Margaret H. Richards, 96, of College Station and formerly of Flossmoor, Ill., are set for 11 a.m. March 7 at Homewood Memorial Gardens in Homewood, Ill.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ryan Funeral Home in Homewood.

Local arrangements are under the direction of Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mrs. Richards died Sunday at Bryton Inn.

She was born in Milwaukee and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Flossmoor Country Club and Flossmoor Community Church. She was a Protestant.

Survivors include two sons, John M. Richards Jr. of Wichita, Kan., and Thomas Howell Richards of Winnetke, Ill.; a daughter, Mary Jane Crandell of College Station; a brother, Roger Howell of Red Bluff, Calif.; a sister, Elizabeth Goletz of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Columbus Sullivan
March 8, 1919 — Feb. 14, 2003

HEARNE — Services for Columbus Sullivan, 83, of Hearne are set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel AME Church in Hearne.

The Rev. Allen Edwards will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Funeral Home in Hearne.

Mr. Sullivan died Friday in the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Temple.

He was born in Port Sullivan.

Survivors include four brothers and two sisters-in-law, L.C. and Bertha Sullivan and A.R. Sullivan, all of Dallas, W.L. and Gloria Sullivan of Branchville and Johnnie B. Sullivan of Houston; eight sisters, Dorothy Garrett and Everlena Herford, both of Dallas, Millie Ann Lewis, Ella Mack and Oza Lee Lockett Excel Burns, all of Houston, Elnora Sullivan, Rosie Lee Steamer and Doris Steamer, all of Temple; 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Viola L. Webb
Jan. 29, 1914 — Feb. 17, 2003

Services for Viola L. Webb, 89, of Bryan will be at the First Baptist Church in Electra at a later date.

Local arrangements are under the direction of Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mrs. Webb died Monday at Sherwood Health Care Center.

She was born in Erath County and lived in Bryan two years, having previously lived in Electra. She worked many years for the school cafeteria and was a member of the senior citizen’s group and Meals on Wheels.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Electra and was a retired homemaker. She was a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Raymond J. Jinkins and Lewis S. Webb.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Jane Weldon of Bryan; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
