James Burton ‘J.B.’ Ross
July 13, 1913 — Dec. 17, 2002

Services for James Burton “J.B.” Ross, 89, of Normangee are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Madisonville Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Church President Roy Ross will officiate. Burial will be in the Jozye Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 12:30 p.m. until the time of services Saturday at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of J.M. Day Funeral Home in Madisonville.

Mr. Ross died Tuesday at his home.

He was born in Scrapping Valley. He was a member of the Madisonville Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Park Place Masonic Lodge of Houston.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Nancy Janie Foster Ross.

Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Roy and Barbara Ross of Normangee, James and Sue Ross of Deer Park and Patrick Ross of Edna; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Joe Worley of Houston; a sister, Ora Mae Richards of Silsbee; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many other friends and relatives.

Donald Gene Douget
Nov. 4, 1940 — Dec. 16, 2002

CENTERVILLE — Memorial services for Donald Gene Douget, 62, of Centerville are set for 3 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Centerville.

The Revs. Larry Ashley, pastor of the First Baptist Church, and Michael Barone will officiate. A private interment will follow at a later date.

A rosary will be recited at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Walters Funeral Home in Centerville.

Mr. Douget died Monday at his home.

He was born in Beaver, La. He was a firefighter for the Houston Fire Department and served in Cut and Shoot as mayor and on the City Council.

He was a member of the Cut and Shoot Volunteer Fire Department, the Conroe Knights of Columbus and was the organizational leader of the Cut and Shoot 4-H Club.

His family moved to Centerville In 1986 and in 1992 he retired from the Houston Fire Department after 28 years. He began substitute teaching at Centerville ISD and was later elected Leon County judge for two terms.

Survivors include his wife, Becky Douget of Centerville; his mother-in-law, Verna Young of Dayton; a son and daughter-in-law, Donald Gene Jr. and Carolyn Douget of Anderson; a daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Chad Clossin of Centerville; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Daniel Wade and Sherry Douget of Madisonville and Joe LaFleur of Houston; three brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law, Bill and Ruth Young of Houston, Randy and Gayle Young of Channelview, Robbi and Woody Orr of Houston and Kathy Young of Houston; and five grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Leon County Welfare Board, c/o Kathy Pierce, 5846 F.M. 1119, Centerville, Texas 75833; the Centerville Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 340, Centerville, Texas 75833; the Leon County Heritage Society, P.O. Box 400, Centerville, Texas 75833; or Elmer and Jewel Ward Library, P.O. Box 567, Centerville, Texas 75833.

Julia Mae ‘Judy’ Mahan
July 26, 1922 — Dec. 15, 2002

CORPUS CHRISTI — Services for Julia Mae “Judy” Mahan, 80, of Corpus Christi are set for 10 a.m. Thursday at Nobles Funeral Chapel in Navasota.

The Rev. Bill Churchwell of Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mahan died Sunday in Corpus Christi.

She was born in Gadston, Ala. She was a homemaker and member of Ladies Auxiliary No. 4006.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Mahan.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Teresa Tate of McAlister, Okla., and Charles Lloyd and Priscella Tate of Corpus Christi; four daughters and a son-in-law, Dorothy Merle McNally and Hazel Pauline Simmons, both of Corpus Christi, Jeanette Kay Benefield of Doniphan, Mo., and Lillie Jane and Fred Bage of Bellville; 19 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

August A. Lenert, Jr.
Lt. Col., U.S.A.F., Retired

August A. Lenert, Jr., 80, of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida died Sunday, December 15, 2002 in a local hospital. He was born on April 21, 1922 in

Bryan, Texas to Dr. August A. and Isobel Vaughn Lenert, Sr. He was an Aeronautical Engineer, and graduated from Texas A&M University. He was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Ft. Walton Beach, and retired from the United States Air Force and Civil Service. He lived in Ft. Walton Beach since 1943, and was one of the first individuals of the original group of ordained deacons at the First Baptist Church. He served both as Sunday School Superintendent and church training director for a number of years.

Mr. Lenert was also actively involved in the Choctaw Baptist Association, having served as Associational Moderator as well as Annuity Advisor. He was a member of the Ft. Walton Beach Lions Club where he served as past president. He was honored by the club for his 40 years as Secretary and Treasurer, and was awarded the Melvin Jones Award by the Lions International Club. He held membership in the Playground Mutual Concert Association, serving as president for several years. He was active in the organizational years of the Guidance Clinic, now known as Bridgeway Center. Growth of Camellias was a special interest to him and he served as president of show chairman at various times of the Camellias Society. He was a veteran of WWII, and Korea.

Survivors include his wife Cleota Lenert, of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; daughter Earl Ann Bumpus and her husband Dr. Mark Bumpus of Mineral Wells, TX; sister Mary Frances Swatzell of Graham, TX. He is also survived by grandchildren Katy and Marshall Bumpus of Mineral Wells, TX and several nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rosemary Anderson.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 - 6:00 pm Wednesday at McLaughlin Mortuary. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm Thursday, December 19, 2002 in the First Baptist Church, with Dr. Howard Gates, and Dr. Mark Bumpus officiating. Burial will be in the Brooks Cemetery with full Military Honors. Honorary Pallbearers will be Lions Club members and deacons of the First Baptist Church. Flowers are welcomed, or memorials may be made to The Lions Club Foundation for the Blind, or the First Baptist Church of Ft. Walton Beach, FL. McLaughlin Mortuary, 17 Chestnut Ave., Ft. Walton Beach, FL has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.

Melvin R. “Shorty” Sheffield
Sept. 6, 1928 – Dec. 16, 2002

Melvin R. “Shorty” Sheffield, 74, passed away on December 16, 2002 in Bryan, Texas. Mr. Sheffield was born on September 6, 1928 in Normangee, Texas.

He served as Corporal in the United States Army during the Korean War. In 1960, he moved his family to Houston and retired from Brown & Root after over twenty years of service. In 1986 he went to work for the MSC Bookstore and retired from Texas A&M after ten years.

Mr. Sheffield is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jean Sheffield of Bryan, son & daughter-in-law, Larry & Nary Ann Sheffield of Austin, two Grandchildren, Joseph and Jason Sheffield of Bryan, sister & brother-in-law, Glynora & Pete Pachall and Maurine West all of Bryan, brother & sister-in-law, Vivian C. “Skip” & Lucille L. Sheffield of Houston and sister-in-law, Corena Sheffield of Bryan, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation is scheduled from 5-9pm Wednesday in the Hillier Funeral Home, Bryan, Texas and from 12:30-1:30pm Thursday in the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Deanville. Funeral Services will be at 1:30pm Thursday in the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Deanville with Reverend Terry Bage officiating. Interment will be at 3:30pm Thursday in the Vogelsang Cemetery in Milam County. Hillier Funeral Home Bryan, Texas

Dora Stegemueller Zschappel
Aug. 2, 1904 — Dec. 17, 2002

BRENHAM — Services for Dora Stegemueller Zschappel, 98, of Brenham are set for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham.

Pastor Kim Little-Brooks will officiate. Burial will be in the Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Mrs. Zschappel died Tuesday in Brenham. She was born in Washington County and was a homemaker. She was a member of the St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Tri-Community Home Demonstration Club and did volunteer work with the Washington County Fair.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry C. Fischer, and her second husband, Herman L. Zschappel.

Survivors include two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the radio and television ministry at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 305 Third St., Brenham, Texas 77833.

Olga Stephens Zalmanek
March 11, 1929 — Dec. 11, 2002

Services for Olga Stephens Zalmanek, 73, of Bryan and formerly of Iola are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Concord Chapel on F.M. 1696 in Grimes County.

The Rev. Gerald Brown will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

Mrs. Zalmanek died at her home. She was born in Iola in Grimes County and lived in Bryan for the past 30 years. She was a homemaker and a retired secretary for the Coca Cola Bottling Co. in Bryan and belonged to the Missionary Baptist Church in Iola.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry H. and Lou Stephens of Iola; a sister, Bobbie Warren of Iola; and several nieces and nehews.

Memorials may be made to the Concord Cemetery Associaton in Grimes County.

Audrey Swann
June 11, 1957 — Dec. 15, 2002

Services for Audrey Swann, 45, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Caldwell.

The Rev. Cecil Lang will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

Mrs. Swann died Sunday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

She was born in Houston and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Jerome Ciolino of Bryan; a daughter, Christy Clark of Humble; two sons, Ian Velarde of Fort Worth and Grant Velarde of Bryan; and two sisters, Sheila Mills and Sherly Eaton of Bryan.

Frank J. Sparkman
March 4, 1926 — Dec. 17, 2002

Services for Frank J. Sparkman, 76, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home Chapel in Woodville.

The Rev. Bob Fosburgh will officiate. Burial wil be in the Village Mills Cemetery.  Mr. Sparkman died Tuesday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

Mr. Sparkman was born in Desdemona. He was a former resident of Warren and Houston. Mr. Sparkman was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran, USLST Associaton No. 580 from World War II.

He was a life member of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, a member of the Harris County Fair Associaton, a board member of the Brazos County Senior Citizen Associaon, a member of First Baptist Church of Freer, a member of Government Wells Lodge No. 1275 of Freer and a life member of Brazos County VFW Post No. 4692.

Survivors include his wife, Louise V. Sparkman of Bryan; a brother, Glenn Sparkman of May; and an extended family of children, grandchildren, an aunt, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 105 N. Pecan, Woodville, Texas 75979 or the Alzheimer’s Association, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1100, Chicago, Ill. 60611-1676.
