Dr. Jack Hayes
April 28, 1937-Dec. 20, 2002

On December 20, 2002, the angels came to take Jack home to his Lord in heaven after a courageous battle against cancer. Jack was born on April 28, 1937 in Findlay, Ohio to Ted and Barbara Hayes. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe in '55-'56 and returned to the US to earn his Master's Degree at Southern Illinois University. He married the former Janice Vaughn of Harrisburg, Illinois on December 19, 1964.

In 1968, Jack and Jan moved to Houston, Texas where he earned his Ph.D. in Medical Entomology. He received an appointment to the faculty of the Medical School at Texas Tech University in 1973. He was a professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine for 20 years. While in Lubbock, Dr. Hayes was instrumental in establishing the Presbyterian Medical Center, one of the nation's first clinics to combine church and federal funding to hire physicians to provide health care services for the community. During his tenure at Texas Tech, Jack developed a consulting business, working with international corporations doing health risk assessments. He traveled throughout Central and South America, Africa and the Middle East.

Dr. Hayes took a sabbatical from teaching at Texas Tech to do Research at INPA, an international research center in the Brazilian Amazon. His wife and two young children lived with him in Manaus, Brazil during his two-year leave.

After retiring from Texas Tech, Jack and Jan moved to Boerne, Texas in 1993 where Jack was a professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health in San Antonio, Texas. One year after arriving in Boerne, on Christmas day 1994, Jack was blessed with the gift of a life-saving liver transplant at the University Hospital in San Antonio. A consummate scientist, Jack used his transplant to further forensic science research by using his own liver in a study which further expanded the list of sources of DNA evidence by showing that mtDNA analysis may potentially be used to associate a maggot with a human corpse.

He retired from the UTHSC at San Antonio in December 1999 to develop vector-ecology consultation work with the cities of Brownsville and McAllen. His research concentrated on Dengue Fever and West Nile Virus. The city of McAllen honored him for his work with the Texas A & M School of Rural Health in McAllen, for the establishment of a vector control program for the city McAllen and the surrounding communities, and for his time, effort and support for public health for all individuals by declaring November 22, 2002
as "Dr. Jack Hayes Day" in McAllen, Texas.

Preceding him in death were his father Ted(1953) and his mother Barbara(December 24, 2001). He is survived by his brother, Robert L. Hayes, of Monument, Colorado; his three oldest children from a previous marriage: Tamblyn Rae Hayes Mileski of Marquette, Michigan; Jack Kevin Hayes of Lubbock, Texas; and Tiffany Dianne Hayes Moore of Findlay, Ohio; his wife Jan of Boerne, Texas, and their two children: Jodi Lynn Hayes Spoor of San Antonio, Texas; and Jarrod deMeillon Hayes of Houston, Texas. Jack was especially devoted to his grandchildren who affectionately called him "Daddy Jack": Dillon Hayes Ybarra, Jacklyn Montana Hayes, Emma Christiana and Eileen Walker Spoor, Jillian Elaine and Jenna Elisabeth Hayes.

Jack was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Boerne. Friends and loved ones are invited to celebrate his life at a memorial service being held at the church on Friday, December 27, 2002 at 11:00A.M.
