She was born October 31, 1916, in Reagan, Texas. Jane was valedictorian of her graduating class at Tivy High School in Kerrville, TX and attended Mary Hardin Baylor College.

She married Earl C. Burge on November 12, 1938, in Grove Hill, Alabama. Jane had a sharp wit, a keen intellect, and a life-long thirst for knowledge, viewing each day for an opportunity to learn. She demanded excellence of herself, and strongly encouraged it in her family and friends. Though not a trained theologian, her depth of knowledge of the Bible, it’s history and context was the envy of many and equaled by few. She used this knowledge extensively, teaching Sunday School and Bible study for many years. She was an active member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Midland until 1999, when she moved to Houston to live nearer her daughter. She found great joy in nature. Bird watching and spring drives to see the wildflowers were favorites of hers.

Jane was a true patriot, even when that was not fashionable. She was proud that all three of her sons chose military careers, and that they had a combined total of over 66 years of service to the Nation. Also deeply religious, Jane took pride in knowing that her daughter found her calling as Director of Christian Education at her church.

Mrs. Burge was preceded in death by her parents, Stanfield S. and Perla Chapman Jones; her husband, Earl C. Burge; a granddaughter, Sharie Burge; and a great-grand daughter, Courtney Renee Conner.

Survivors include three sons: Earl S. (Stan) Burge and wife Irene of Abilene, TX; Pruett W. Burge and wife JoAnn of Warner Robins, GA; and Andrew L. (Andy) Burge and wife Deborah of Comfort, TX; one daughter, Janell Schultz and husband David of Spring, TX; her brother, Frank D. Jones and wife Bernice of Kerville, TX; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one niece.

In lieu of flowers, Jane would have wanted memorials to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, 4801 LoCrosse Ave., Austin, TX 78739-1702. Arrangements under the direction of Klein Funeral Home, 1400 W. Main St., Tomball, Texas 77375, 281-351-7233
