Selma Maurice Murray Godwin

Oct. 27, 1924 — March 28, 2002

NAVASOTA — Graveside services for Selma Maurice Murray Godwin, 77, of Brewton, Ala., are set for 11 a.m. Monday at the Zion Cemetery in Iola.

The Rev. Scott Jones of the Iola Missionary Baptist Church will officiate.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to the time of services Monday at the cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel in Navasota.

Mrs. Godwin died Thursday in Houston.

She was born in Willis, Texas, and was a Baptist. She was a sales clerk for Woolworth’s.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie Godwin.

Survivors include two sisters, LaVeta McHalek and Evelyn Canady, both of Houston; and a nephew.

D. Ferrell Howard

April 18, 1927 — March 12, 2002

D. Ferrell Howard, 74, of Bryan died March 12 in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mrs. Howard was born in Iowa Park, Texas, and spent her life in Albuquerque, N.M., and Tucson, Ariz. She worked for many years as an office manager.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Kelly and Gloria Howard of Victoria, Texas; three daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Lynn Burlbaw of College Station, Shawn and Bruce DeMers of Aurora, Colo., and Bridget and Ron Austin of Rio Rancho, N.M.; a brother, Marlin Rose of Tucson; a sister and brother-in-law, Laveta and Osa Coats of Gainesville, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Paul ‘Pee Wee’ Martinez Jr.

Oct. 23, 1982 — March 29, 2002

Services for Paul “Pee Wee” Martinez Jr., 19, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bryan.

The Rev. Paul Clogan of St. Joseph Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Bryan City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Monday and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

A Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Paul died Friday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

He was born in Caldwell and was a longtime resident of Bryan. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a student at Bryan High School.

Survivors include his mother, Patsy Martinez of Bryan; a brother, Louis Martinez of Bryan; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Abigail and Juan Lopez and Martina Martinez, all of Bryan.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 600 E. 26th St., Bryan, Texas 77803.

Betty Jo Mauldin

March 9, 1921 — March 30, 2002

CAMERON — Services for Betty Jo Mauldin, 81, of Cameron are set for 11 a.m. Monday in the Kathryn W. Green Chapel of Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Cameron.

The Rev. Glynn Cummings will officiate.

Mrs. Mauldin died Saturday in a Temple hospital.

She was born in Oklahoma and was a longtime Bell County and Milam County resident. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Cameron and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy “Cotton” Mauldin.

Survivors include two sons, Ben Mauldin of Academy, Texas, and Roy “Dusty” Mauldin of Friendswood, Texas; three daughters, Jackie Penn of Oklahoma City, Connie Lester of Rosebud, Texas, and Mona Kirk of Cameron; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Mae Ola May

March 10, 1910 — March 29, 2002

NAVASOTA — Services for Mae Ola May, 92, of Navasota and formerly of Richards are set for 10:30 a.m. Monday at Lindley-Robertson-Holt Funeral Home in Navasota.

The Revs. Reagan Cooksey and Floyd Hoke will officiate. Burial will be in Waller Cemetery near Richards.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mrs. May died Friday in Grimes St. Joseph Health Center.

She was born in Grimes County and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Richards Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas May.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeanine Hereford of Richards; a sister, Ruth Williams of Navasota; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Alda I. Ritchie

July 8, 1927 — March 29, 2002

FRANKLIN — Services for Alda I. Ritchie, 74, of Marquez are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Marquez.

Billy Bob Evans of Marquez will officiate. Burial will be in the William Bethesda Cemetery near Hilltop Lakes in Leon County.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m., and from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the McCauley Funeral Home in Franklin.

Ms. Ritchie died Saturday in Marquez.

She was born in Leon County and lived in Marquez 24 years. She was retired from the Leon Independent School District ,where she was a cafeteria worker. She was a Baptist.

Survivors include three daughters and a son-in-law, Dee Ann Shugart of Thorndale, Tammie Greer of Marquez, and Nelda and Bufford Caldwell of Huffman, Texas; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Alvin and Cecelia Ritchie of Houston, and Kenny Ritchie of New Caney, Texas; two sisters, Alma Montez Stewart of Groesbeck, Texas, and Martha Jean Navarro of Houston; a brother, Buren Noey of Marquez; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Carmen Villarreal Orta

Carmen Villarreal Orta, a native Houstonian, passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at the age of 69 years. Carmen was born March 6, 1941 to the late Jose Maria and Clotida Lopez Villarreal. She attended Sacred Heart and St. Agnes Academy.

Carmen was devoted to serving her community. She was a former board member and served the Houston Metropolitan Transit Authority, the Houston Housing Authority, the Houston Minority Business Council, and the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter of The United Way. She also served with the East End Chamber of Commerce, AAMA, and. the Sisters of Charity.

Carmen was an active volunteer and served with the San Jacinto Council of the Girl Scouts of America, the Northside Redevelopment Corp., and the American Diabetes Association. She was a former board member of the Greater Houston Convention and Visitor Bureau, chaired La Rosa Family Services, and was past President of the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Carmen was also the recipient of the Willie Velasquez Lifetime Achievement Award and received an HCC Honorary Associates Degree. Carmen was voted US. Hispanic Businesswoman of the Year in 1988 and was inducted into the Hispanic Women Hall of Fame.

Preceded in death by her parents, Carmen is survived by a loving family; her husband of 43 years, Roy; three sons, Ramiro Orta, David Bustillos, and Roy Steven Orta; brother, Joe Villarreal; sister, Paula Cabrera; mother-in-law, Beatrice Andrado; four generations of nieces and nephews, numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

The family will receive friends from 5pm to 7pm, and will hold a vigil service at 7pm, Friday, June 25th, at Saint Patrick Catholic Church, 4918 Cochran St., Houston. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10am Saturday, June 26th, at Saint Patrick Catholic Church. Rite of committal will follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. For those desiring, memorials may be made in Carmen’s honor to the American Diabetes Association.

Dorothy Garcia Canales

Dorothy Garcia Canales, a resident of Houston, passed away Sunday, June 20, 2010 at the age of 84 years. Mrs. Canales was born September 25, 1925 in Bastrop, Texas to the late Benito and Isabel Rodriguez Garcia.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at Niday Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, June 23, 2010, in the Chapel of Niday Funeral Home with Pastor Juan Morales officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery, in Webster.

Antonio Saenz “Tony” Camposano

Antonio S. “Tony” Camposano, a longtime resident of Houston, passed away Sunday, June 20, 2010 at the age of 71 years. Tony was born October 8, 1938 in New Braunfels, Texas to the late Mauro and Herlinda Saenz Campozano.

In addition to his parents, Tony is preceded in death by two brothers, Mauro, Jr. and Gilbert Campozano, and a son, Gregory Camposano. He is survived by a loving family; his wife of 46 years, Janie; four children, Delores Creamer and her husband, Blaise, Antonio J. Camposano, Mary Camposano, and Manuel Camposano; sister, Dora Melendez and her husband, Clay; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; cousin, Rachael Saucedo; numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, June 24, 2010, at Niday Funeral Home, where a vigil will be offered at 7:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at 7:00 PM Friday, June 25, 2010, in the Chapel of Niday Funeral Home with Deacon Merce Leal officiating.

Myrtle Louise Stark

Myrtle Louise Stark, born August 3, 1930 passed away on June 17, 2010 at the age of 79.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years A.J. Stark, Sr. She is survived by three sons and four daughters: John Chaney, Frank Chaney, Barbara Chaney, Mary Joannides and husband Peter, Linda Hollingsworth, Carrie Lowe and husband Helmut, and A.J. Stark, Jr. She is also survived by ten grandchildren: Anthony Chaney, Anna and Brandon Chaney, Cory Hollingsworth, Sean Lowe and wife Sabrina, Cassie and Blake Myers, Candace, Sophie and Peter Joannides, and four great grandchildren: Jacob Young, Benjamin Lowe, Alexis and Andrew Chaney, and two sisters Minnie Davis and Elois Kittman.

Myrtle held a deep pride for her country and its armed services and was a long time member of the Eastern Stars. She was strong in her faith and an active member at Sagemont Church. Myrtle furthered her studies and expressed the love of her faith with her friends in Soul Survivors.

Myrtle’s greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Her radiant smile, insight and friendship will be missed by all who had the joy of knowing her.

Her warmth and light will reside in the hearts of all those she has touched throughout her life.

The family wishes to express extreme gratitude to the church and to the members of Soul Survivors for their love and unending support.

To the many friends who prayed diligently for her well-being and comfort, we thank you.

Your outpouring of love and prayer was, and continues to be, our greatest source of strength.

The family will receive friends from 6:00pm-8:00pm Tuesday, June 22nd, and the service celebrating Myrtle’s life will be at 11:00am Wednesday, June 23rd, all held at Niday Funeral Home, with interment will follow at Houston National Cemetery at 1:00pm.

In lieu of usual remembrances, the family suggests memorial contributions in Myrtle’s name be made to the Living Proof Project of Sagemont Church, 11300 S. Sam Houston Pkwy. E., Houston 77089, or www.sagemontchurch.org.

Albina Elsie Arlen

Albina Elsie Arlen, born in Taylor, Texas January 25, 1919, passed away June 15, 2010 at the age of 91.

Mrs. Arlen was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Richard (Curly) Arlen, and three of her brothers, Albert, Raymond, and Willy Zamorsky.

She is survived by two sons, Richard Arlen Jr. and his wife Mary Ann, and Billy Arlen and his wife Sonia; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; her sister Evelyn; and two brothers, Eugene and Benny Zamorsky.

Known as “Al” by her friends and co-workers at Princes’ and Stuarts’ Drive-In, she was named “Best Waitress” in 1952.

Mrs. Arlen continued working well into her seventies.

The family wishes to thank Vista Continuing Care for their concern, care, and support of our loved one.
