Sergio “Checko” Rosas

Sergio “Checko” Rosas, 54, of Baytown, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2006, at a Houston hospice center. He was born March 5, 1951, to Jesus and Hortencia (Del Fierro) Rosas in Matamoros, Mexico. He married the love of his life, Maria L. (Sanchez) Rosas, in Baytown on March 20, 1974, and they began their family. Sergio was employed by Basic Industries for the past 18 years as a general superintendent. His hobbies included shopping and dancing. Sergio was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and a treasured friend to many. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Gil Rosas and Humberto Rosas; and sister, Clotilde Olivarez. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Maria L. (Sanchez) Rosas; daughters, Sonia Rubio and husband, Juan, Brenda Hernandez and husband, Adolfo and Nancy Rosas; brothers, Jesus Rosas and wife, Josefina, Rolando Rosas, Raul Rosas and wife, Andrea and Humberto Rosas and wife, Amalia; sisters, Guadalupe Rodriguez and husband, Ismael and Hortencia Mungia and husband, Santiago; and grandchildren, Delila Rubio, Juan Rubio, Jr., Adolfo A. Hernandez and Skyla L. Hernandez.

Visitation will be Friday, February 24, 2006, from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm, at the Chapel of Crespo & Jirrels Funeral Home. Service of remembrance will be held Saturday, February 25, 2006, at 10:00 am, at the Chapel of Crespo & Jirrels Funeral Home.

Interment to follow at Cedarcrest cemetery . Arrangements have been entrusted to Crespo & Jirrels Funeral and Cremation Services, 6123 Garth Rd., 281.839.0700.

Peter Joseph Golla

Peter Joseph Golla, 76, of Baytown; passed away to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 18, 2006 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston. He was born July 20, 1929 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was a proud 1952 graduate of Texas A&M University with a degree in Chemical Engineering. As an officer in the USAF, he was selected for involvement in the development of special jet and rocket fuels.

He was world renowned as a specialist in his field while employed for 41 years by Exxon Corporation as a Engineer at the Baytown Refinery. He traveled to most of the Exxon refineries in Europe and the Far East as a consultant, prior to his retirement in 1992. Following retirement, he was highly sought as a consultant for other refineries world-wide.

Pete, a licensed Professional Engineer, was active in the E. Harris County Serra Club, a member of the Knights of Columbus, many committees, and all lay ministries of St. Joseph’s Church. Through the years he was involved with Boy Scouts, helped with science fairs, and science projects for students at St. Joseph Catholic School.

Pete loved being with his family. He freely shared his knowledge and skills, and his love of gardening, fishing, hunting, golf, and many hobbies and interests. He was a generous friend to all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents John T. and Mary Whelan Golla and brother John A. Golla. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Irene Selensky Golla of Baytown, brother Damian Golla and wife Chell Ann of Seguin; sister Rita Kennedy of Dallas; brother Jude Golla and wife Gail of Kingsville. He is survived by seven children, Joseph Golla and wife Kathy, Tom Golla and wife Monica, Cindy McSeveney, Tim Golla and wife Rebecca, James Golla and wife Cheryl, Paul Golla and wife Laura, and Mary McIntyre and husband Scott, and 23 grandchildren, four great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and many, many friends.

Honoring the family as pallbearers are grandsons Wade Golla, Anthony McIntyre, Zach Golla, John Shell, Michael Shell, and nephew John Selensky. Honorary pallbearers are friends Sam Bozich, Perry Simmons, Watty Watkins, Lewis Berniard, Norman Smith, and grandsons Chris Golla, Caleb Golla, and especially grandson Joseph Burrow, who is currently serving in Iraq.

His family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 21, 2006 from 6pm to 8pm at Navarre Funeral Home with the rosary at 7pm. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at 10am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1907 Carolina Ave. in Baytown, where he was a faithful daily communicant, Rev. Dwight M. Canizares and Msgr. Leo Wleczyk, celebrants. Burial will follow at White Cemetery in Highlands.

In lieu of usual remembrances, contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic School, 1811 Carolina Ave., Baytown, TX 77520.

Betty F. Mariner

On Feb. 17, 2006, the good Lord decided to take his greatest creation home with to him. Betty F. Mariner passed away at the Conroe Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 21, 1945, Betty was raised in Batesville, MS and moved to Texas after graduating high school. She truly was a gift to this world, touching countless lives and leaving a positive impression on anyone who came in contact with her. She will most certainly be missed, but thought of for many years to come.

She is survived by her only true love and soulmate, her husband Clinton Mariner. She leaves behind her greatest and proudest accomplishments, her children Audra and Hiram Mariner. She also is survived by her mother Mable C. Gillan, her sisters Linda Theobald and Barbara Brumfield, her brothers Don and Henry Austin, her father-in-law Homer Mariner, her sisters-in-law Karen Elliott, Linda Reams, Robin Mariner, and Patti Austin, her brothers-in-law Dwayne Elliott and George Theobald, her nephews Joshua and Kameron Mulkey, Eric Austin, and David and Daniel Brumfield, her nieces Leigh Ann Harrelson, Lindsey Boutin, Sandy Miller, and Barbie Brown, and the many others whose lives were enriched by merely knowing her.

The Mariner family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the doctors and nursing staff of Conroe Regional Medical Center, more especially to Dr. DeWitz, Scott and Nancy. Your care, compassion, and professionalism are greatly appreciated.

Her family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Monday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The celebration of her life will be held at Navarre Funeral Home on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Keenan Smith. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.

William “Bill” Alvoid Layton, III.

William “Bill” Alvoid Layton, III, 53, of Baytown, passed away Friday, February 17, 2006 in a Houston hospital. Bill was born in St. Louis, Missouri on January 3, 1953 to William A. Layton, Jr., and Mary A. Little Layton. He was a 1972 graduate of Huffman High School, and member of Sterling Wood Baptist Church in Houston. He was a carpenter by trade, though there was very little he couldn’t do, always busy building things for his church, family and friends. He enjoyed working on cars, watching drag racing, working out and watching his nephew play baseball and football.

Preceded in death by his father, Bill; is survived by his loving wife of 14 years, Melodie (Mitchell) Layton of Baytown; daughter, Angela K. Rose and husband, Stephen of Orlando, Florida; mother, Mary A. Layton of Liberty; sister Mary C. Layton and life partner, Karen Goings of Liberty, TX; and numerous other relatives and friends.

His family will receive friends Monday, February 20, 2006, from noon to 2 p.m. at Crespo & Jirrels Funeral Home. Service of remembrance will be at 2 p.m., Monday at the chapel of Crespo & Jirrels, Pastor Dale Jones officiating. Interment will follow at White Cemetery.

Andrea Latrice Taylor

On May 29, 1968 Albert Roy and Rose Lewis Taylor received an inheritance from the Lord. They were blessed with their first child, a baby girl, Andrea Latrice Taylor. At an early age, she was blessed and dedicated to the Lord at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Henery Thomas. In 1987 while attending University of Texas at Austin, Andrea united with the Church of Christ and was baptized. Andrea was born and raised in Baytown, Texas. She graduated from Ross Sterling High School on 1986. During her high school years, Andrea excelled in many endeavors and was considered a high achiever among all who knew her. In 1985- 1986, she achieved rank on Colonel of the Ross S. Sterling Stars. After completing her education, she entered the University of Texas at Austin. During the summer of 1990, she completed a summer internship with McNeil Pharmaceutical Company in Springhouse, Pennsylvania. she received the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Texas at Austin in 1991. She completed an accredited Association for the Society of Health Systems Pharmacists hospital pharmacy residency at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio in 1992. She entered the University of Illinois at Chicago for graduate work after her residency where she received the degree of Master of Science in Pharmacy in 1995. During her tenure at the University of Illinois, she practiced as a staff pharmacist at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center. She completed the graduate program in Pharmacy Administration at the University of Texas Austin, and on July 11. 2002 received her Ph.D. in Pharmacy while practicing as both a hospital and retail pharmacist. Andrea began work at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston in September 2000 in the Department of Pharmacoeconomics as a Research Specialist. She was also the CO-chair for the Education Subcommittee of the Medication Adherence special interest group in the International Society for Pharmaceconomics and Outcomes Research. She provided community education regularly for the speaker’s bureau at MDACC. She served on the Community Advisory Board for the African American Nutrition for life project with the Center for Minority Research at MD Anderson. Her past research has involved evaluating women’s decision-making about hormone replacement therapy and menopause. Andrea was responsible for developing programs and projects to evaluate the outcomes and economic value of pharmaceutical products and services. Her most recent research interests included pharmacists as educators, community-based research with theoretically based inventions, HRT, bone health, and depression in oncology. In November 1997, she married her highschool sweetheart Rick Adamus and moved back home to Houston while continuing her graduate studies. After returning to Houston, Andrea and Rick later became active members of Garden Oaks Church of Christ. Andrea was an enthusiastic servant in the Emergency React Committee and Service Committee. She was also actively involved with the Social Committee and the Baptismal Committee. She is preceded in death by her father, Albert Roy Taylor, and her grandparents Alfred and Mary Lewis and Labor and Eula Taylor. Andrea leaves to cherish and honor her memory: her husband, Rick Adamus; her mother, Rose Lewis Taylor of Baytown, Tx; sister Marsha Deniae Taylor of Baytown, Tx and her “sister” Anissa Derina Brown of Los Angeles, CA; her daughter Alann Adamus of Baytown, Tx; and a host of relatives, friends and colleges. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2006 form 6:00pm to 7:00pm. Funeral Services will follow beginning at 7:00pm at Garden Oaks Church of Christ, 4926 N. Shepard Drive, Houston, Tx, 77018, 713-694-2349 with Algie Armstead officiating. Burial will be Friday, February 24, 2006 at 11:00am at San Jacinto Memorial Cemetery, 14659- I-10 East, Houston TX. in lieu of usual remembrances, donations may be made to the Sclerodoma Foundation. Sarah Lena Savage

Sarah Lena Savage, of San Marcos, Texas, formerly of Baytown, was called to her eternal home on Friday, February 17, 2006. She was born to Henry and Mary Woody McGrew on December 8, 1915 in New Iberia, LA.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, Johnnie Savage Jr., two sisters and two brothers.

Sarah is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Fred Huey of Fischer, Daughter and son-in-law Janiece and Sonny Ellisor of Baytown, daughter Janette Wakler and the late son-in-law Don Walker of Baytown, son and daughter-in-law Johnny and Eileen Savage of Fostoria, and daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Larkin Smith of San Marcos. Eleven grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren also survived Sarah. She was lovingly nicknamed “Lolly.”

Sarah graduated from Dayton, Tx. and attended a business school in Houston for 2 years. She eloped and married Johnnie in 1936 in Corpus Christi. They moved to Baytown from Ingleside where Johnnie continued to work for the Humble Oil and Refining Company. She worked in sales at J.C. Penney and Sears. Her 59 years as a Baytown resident were filled with many activities, most of them revolved around Memorial Baptist Church where she was a member. She and Johnnie were a team. They participated in the Singing Saints senior adult choir, worked with the youth program sponsoring many youth choir and Sunday school trips, and enjoyed mission trips to south Texas and Mexico. They lived in Aruba for 11/2 years while Johnnie worked for the Exxon Sero Lago refinery. They had a love for the game of “42”. Sarah faithfully watched the Astros play baseball on television. Her hobbies included needlepoint, yard work, and supporting her children.

Sarah resided in San Marcos the last 11 years of her life. She had many friends and caregivers from Ye Olde Colony Apartments, Stonebrook Apartments, Redwood Springs, Hays Nursing Rehab Center and First Baptist Church in San Marcos.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, February 20, 2006 at Earthman Funeral Home, 3919 Garth Road in Baytown. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at 10 a.m. at Earthman Funeral Homewith Rev. Billy Joe Tate officiating. Burial will follow at Sterling/White Cemetery in Highlands.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Codie Smith, Robbie Smith, Steven Ochoa, Kenneth Brown, Flynt Huey, Jaret Huey, Bill Nitschmann, Gordan Schutze, Jeffery Thayne and Jimmy Spahn.

Kathy Samora

Kathy Samora passed away February 16, 2006. Kathy was a member of St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church of Highlands.

She loved rock and roll music especially The Beatles. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and loved to decorate anything. Kathy loved being with her children and grandchildren. Kathy loved her special cat, Precious.She was preceded in death by her parents: Santiago and Pascualita Perez; grandparents: Abundio and Panfilta Ruiz Morales and Melesio and Juanita Torres Perez. She is survived by her husband: John Samora Jr. of Baytown, TX; children: Sara E. Samora of Baytown, TX. And Victoria k. Samora of Pasadena, TX; step-daughter: Janie E. Norton and husband Rocco of Montecito, CA; brother: Guillermo Perez and wife Blanca of Monterrey, N.L., Mexico; sisters: Juana Maria Perez of Baytown, TX, Esther Molina and husband Jose Abraham of Monterrey NL, Mexico and Maria Elena Perez Morales and husband Severiano of Monterrey NL, Mexico; grandchildren: Caleb Norton and Chloe Norton; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Hilario Torres Jr.

Hilario Torres Jr., 21 passed away Tuesday February 14, 2006. As the result of a car accident in Ypsilanti. Michigan. Hilario was born in Baytown, Texas on February 23, 1984 to Dorothy Tobias and Hilario G Torres Sr. Both of Baytown. Hilario was a loving son, brother and friend. He will be truly missed by all who knew him. Hilario moved to Colorado at age 18. He resided there 2 years then moved on to Indiana, his last residence. He was preceded in death by his maternal Grandmother Josephine Tobias and two cousins Gustavo Garcia Jr. and Arnold Gonzales. Hilario is survived by his loving parents Dorothy Tobias and Hilario G. Torres Sr.: 2 sisters Dora Ann Torres, Faustina and husband Manuel Herrera and their three loving children Manuel Anjel, Abel Isiah and Alejandra Yanette Herrera. Also survived by numerous of aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends. Hilario loved his family dearly. His hobby was cooking. He was an excellent cook. He had extreme pride in his cooking. His specialty was homemade spaghetti. His dream was opening a chain of franchise restaurants. His favorite T.V. show was Emeril “Bam”. His favorite saying was “Chale” and he loved to go see the “Duckies.” Pallbearers: Jose Quiroga, Danny Vasquez, Mathew Murray, Nameth Contreras, Nickolas and Ildefonso Lucatero. Honorary Pallbearers; Manuel Anjel and Abel Isiah Herrera. Visitation will be Sunday February 19, 2006. From 3-9pm. with Rosary at 7:00 pm. Funeral mass service will recite at Our Lady Of Guadalupe Church, on Monday, February 20, 2006 at 11:00am. Leaving in a procession at 10:30am. from Guillen-Baytown Funeral Home. Interment will follow after mass at Hill Of rest Cemetery in Baytown, Texas.

Ruby Mae Batson

Ruby Mae Smith Batson passed away February 16, 2006 in Baytown, Texas. She was born June 21, 1910 in George, Texas to Charlie and Carrie Smith, and had been a resident o Baytown for 41 years. Ruby was a life long member of Sand Prairie Baptist Church of George, Texas.She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years: Doyle Batson.

Wilbert Moeller

Wilbert Greg Moeller of Baytown passed away Thursday afternoon at his parents home in Hardin, Texas.

Greg was born November 2, 1962, in Houston, to Frankie and Ailleen (Bryan) Moeller. He was a Registered Nurse at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston and enjoyed gardening.

Greg was preceded in death by his grandmother, Maude Bryan, aunt, Kittie Marie (Sister) Owens, and cousin, Bryan Owens.

Alma Kathleen Brooks

Alma Kathleen Nix Brooks born in Paris, Texas April 2, 1905, passed away February 13, 2006 in her home at Baytown, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Elmer Brooks, son, Edward Larry Brook, and four siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Iris Anne Frazier; grandchildren, Candace Anne Lewis and her husband Carroll Lewis, Lanham Frazier, Donna Smith and her husband Gerald, Rhonda Armer and her husband Ronnie, and Shelly Chavers and her husband Ray; great grandchildren Brooke Mouton, Jason Mouton, Tonya Smita and Laura Bryant; seven great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
