Robert L. Cole Jr.

Oct. 15, 1909 — Feb. 16, 2002

Robert L. Cole Jr., a native Houstonian, was born October 15, 1909 to Robert L. and Dena Kuypers Cole and died February 16, 2002. An attorney from a family of attorneys, Mr. Cole was the son of the late Robert L. Cole, a Houston attorney from 1905 until his death in 1948; brother of the late Richard Ray Cole, Houston attorney from 1939 to 1960; nephew of the late John F. Cole, Houston attorney from 1907 to 1933; and grandson of Robert Pollack Cole, attorney in Paris, Tennessee, from 1872 to 1903. Mr. Cole graduated from the University of Texas with BA and LLB Degrees in 1933, and practiced law in Houston until 1995 when he retired and moved to Bryan, Texas.

He was a Veteran and served in the Trial Judge Advocate and Legal Affairs Office of the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of the State Bar of Texas, Houston Bar Association and was elected a Fellow of the Houston Bar Foundation. From 1966-70 he served as Judge of Bellaire Municipal Court. During the Roosevelt era he was president of the Young Democrats of Harris County and was a member of the committee that appeared before the Texas Legislature in the interest of the adoption of the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Mr. Cole was raised a Mason on October 12, 1937 in Houston Lodge No. 1189 and soon became a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, member of Arabia Temple Shrine and Arabia Temple Patrol, which he served as president in 1967. In 1968 he was a member of the State and National Championship Patrol Drill Team. He was elected in 1965 as a member of the Royal Order of Jesters.

Initiated into the Delta Theta Phi International Law Fraternity in 1930, for the next 32 years Mr. Cole held many local, state and national offices and was responsible for much of the phenomenal growth of the fraternity in Texas during that time. His last official position was as president of Delta Theta Phi Educational Foundation, which accomplished the building of a fraternity house at the University of Texas.

A member of the American Legion and 40 & 8, he served as Commander of Post 52 in 1950 and during his administration a new Post Home was acquired and an additional building was built.

Acting being his hobby, Mr. Cole appeared on stage during his high school and college years and was elected to The Curtain Club at the University of Texas. With the exception of a brief stint while he was in the Air Corps, he did not again pursue his hobby until 1972. During the next 15 years, from 1972 to 1987 he handled major roles at most of the Community Theaters in the Houston area, his favorite role being that of Norman in On Golden Pond.

Travel was another strong interest of Mr. Cole — first, driving trips with his wife and children through most of the U.S. Later at least 19 sight-seeing trips with his wife outside the U.S., to far-flung places, many seldom visited by tourists.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bryan and the Men’s Bible Class, a former member of Bellaire, St. Mark’s and Grace Methodist churches. At St. Mark’s he served on its Board of Stewards, and as attorney for the church, guided it through “troubled waters” while the new Sanctuary was being built at 600 Pecore, Houston. A man of great integrity, fairness, kindness and compassion, his concern was always the best interest of others.
He is survived by wife, Frances Cole of Bryan; one son and daughter-in-law, Ralph William and Janice K. Cole of Bryan; one daughter and son-in-law, Cathy C. Reneker and Ron Reneker of Dallas, TX; four grandchildren, Ash Reneker and Tori Reneker of Dallas and Melissa Cole of Bryan and Kristin Cole of Richardson, TX; and one sister and brother-in-law, Rosemary and Carl Fenity of Kemah, TX.
