Manuel Akin

Nov. 22, 1902 — Jan. 1, 2002

Services for Manuel Akin, 99, of Bryan are set for 10:30 a.m. Monday at Central Baptist Church in Bryan.

The Rev. Tim Skaggs of Central Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Bryan City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan and from 9:30 a.m. to the time of services Monday at the church.

Mr. Akin died Tuesday in Dallas.

He was born in Madison County and lived in Bryan since 1929. He was the owner of Akin’s Menswear for 50 years and served as a volunteer parole officer for 17 years. He was nominated for the Governor’s Award for his volunteer service. He was a member of Central Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, Sunday school teacher and was church treasurer for 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virgie Batson Akin.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmie and Patsy Akin of Bryan; three daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Jane and Dr. M. Dee Ogden, Kathleen Akin and Martha Hatcher, all of Dallas; a sister, Burnice Walsh of Houston; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mable Lou Brown

Feb. 15, 1910 — Jan. 3, 2002

HEARNE — Graveside services for Mable Lou Brown, 91, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Norwood Cemetery in Hearne.

The Rev. Nona Taylor of Grace United Methodist Church in Hearne will officiate.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Heartfield Funeral Home in Hearne.

Mrs. Brown died Thursday at the Grand Court Retirement Home in Bryan.

She was born in Hearne and lived in Bryan 13 years. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she was retired as the church secretary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rhuel Brown.

Survivors include a son, Rhuel Brown Jr. of Houston; two sisters, Pauline Barker of Bryan and Irene Martin of Louisville, Ky.; and four grandchildren.

Ocie Mae Goodrum Oppermann

March 30, 1934 — Jan. 3, 2002

MADISONVILLE — Services for Ocie Mae Goodrum Oppermann, 67, of Spring and formerly of Madisonville are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the J.M. Day Funeral Home Chapel in Madisonville.

Arnold Foster will officiate. Burial will be in Jozye Cemetery.

Mrs. Oppermann died Thursday at her home.

She was born in Madisonville and was a clerk with the Hutcherson Tile Company. She was a Lutheran.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Rickey Alan and Brenda Sherman of Spring, Texas; a daughter, Debbie Fowler of Dickerson, Texas; five brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Lorine Goodrum of Georgia, Dude and Joyce Goodrum, Herbert and Belinda Goodrum and Wayne and Carmelita Goodrum, all of Madisonville, and Kenneth and Genine Goodrum of San Antonio; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Jo Wordrip, Belle Thrash, Blanche Shaw and Mozelle and Raymond Hutcherson, all of Houston; and six grandchildren.

Verna Natalie Wasik

Sept. 22, 1917 — Jan. 3, 2002

Memorial services for Verna Natalie Wasik, 84, of Bryan are set for 1 p.m. Sunday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bryan.

Monsignor John McCaffrey of St. Joseph Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Bremond Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mrs. Wasik died Thursday at her home.

She was born in Bremond and lived in Bryan 23 years. She was retired as a receptionist for Foley’s and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She sang with the Yukes of Walden at the Grand Court.

Survivors include her husband, John Wasik of Bryan; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Leonard and Priscilla Bashinski of Richmond, Va., Gene and Brenda Wasik of College Station and Michael Wasik of Dallas; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Bernadine and Aldo Bredolo of Columbus, Ohio, Ray Jean and Rex Flanagan of Willis, Texas, and Marcie and Dennis Martin and Joan Wasik, all of College Station; a sister, Florine Napiercoski of Houston; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley, 205 E. 29th Street, Bryan, Texas 77802.

Alice Elizabeth Wimberly

Oct. 25, 1914 — Dec. 30, 2001

FRANKLIN — Graveside services for Alice Elizabeth Wimberly, 87, of Franklin are set for 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 4 to 6 p.m., at the McCauley Funeral Home in Franklin.

Mrs. Wimberly died Sunday in Bryan.

She was born in Grand Saline, Texas, and lived in Franklin for seven years. She was retired as postmaster at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio and also formerly lived in Austin. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Franklin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Mack Wimberly.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Alice Wimberly Ruane and Tom Ruane of Ovilla; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby Mack and Georgeanne Wimberly of Curitiba, Brazil, and Claude Warren and Sharon Wimberly of Coppell; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Ruby Jeannie Eastep

SANTA FE, Texas — Graveside services for Ruby Jeannie Eastep, 62, of Santa Fe are set for 11 a.m. Monday at Mainland Memorial Cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas.

The Rev. Bill Teel will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Carnes Brothers Funeral Home in Galveston.

Ms. Eastep died Monday in John Sealy Hospital in Galveston.

Gloria Ann Lee

Sept. 23, 1951 — Jan. 4, 2002

NAVASOTA — Services for Gloria Ann Lee, 50, of Navasota are set for 11 a.m. Monday at the Greater New Hope Baptist Church in Navasota.

The Rev. Jim Nelms of the Greater New Hope Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Mason Cemetery in Anderson.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Jones Funeral Home in Navasota.

Ms. Lee died Friday in the St. Joseph Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Grimes County and was a homemaker. She was a member of Greater New Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors include her mother, Vesta M. Lee of Navasota; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Adam and Beronica Lee and Raymond and Linda Lee, all of Courtney, Texas, and the Rev. L.C. Jr. and Christine Lee of Navasota; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Vernice M. Lee of Navasota and Ulanda and LaVander Franks of Brenham.

Mason Doyle McCoy

Jan. 3, 2002 — Jan. 3, 2002

ROCKDALE — Graveside services for Mason Doyle McCoy, infant, are set for 11 a.m. Monday at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rockdale.

The Revs. Doug Springer and Calvin Springer of the Rockdale Full Gospel Church will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

Mason died Thursday in the Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

Survivors include his parents, Ron and Misty McCoy of Rockdale; grandparents, Donald McCoy, Margie and Walter Little and Donnie Praesel, all of Rockdale, and Barbara Praesel of Taylor. Texas; great-grandparents, Estelle Praesel and Bill and Adelpha Davis, all of Rockdale; four uncles; two aunts; and numerous cousins.

Jeffrey Alan Nelson

July 30, 1948 — Jan. 4, 2002

Memorial services for Jeffrey Alan Nelson, 53, of College Station are set for 2 p.m. Monday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

The Rev. Tim Skaggs of Central Baptist Church in Bryan will officiate.

Mr. Nelson died Friday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

He was born in Waco and lived in the Bryan-College Station area for five years. He worked for Decision One as a technical support analyst and previously worked in sales for Palm Harbor Homes. He graduated from Paschal High School in Fort Worth and Tarrant County Junior College. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include his mother, Alice Nelson of College Station; a brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Laura Nelson of Bryan; and three nieces.

Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph Regional Health Center Foundation, 3030 East 29th St., Suite 112, Bryan, Texas 77802.

Alma Avery
Aug. 9, 1918 — Jan. 5, 2002

NAVASOTA — Services for Alma Avery, 83, of Navasota took place at 3 p.m. Sunday at Salem Lutheran Church in White Hall.

The Rev. Wayne E. Schumpe of Salem Lutheran Church officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel in Navasota.

Mrs. Avery died Saturday in Grimes St. Joseph Health Center.

She was born in Anderson and was a homemaker. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Avery.

Survivors include a brother-in-law, Will G. Finke of Navasota; and a nephew.

Memorials may be made to Salem Lutheran Church in White Hall.

Anna Marie Cleland
Aug. 9, 1908 — Jan. 3, 2002

Services for Anna Marie Cleland, 93, of College Station are set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the A&M United Methodist Church in College Station.

The Revs. Bob Waters and Jerry Neff will officiate. Burial will be in the College Station Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mrs. Cleland died Thursday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

She was born in Major County, Okla., and lived in College Station since 1941. She was a 1928 graduate of Oklahoma State College with a degree in English and History. She was a retired teacher and taught fourth grade at College Hills Elementary in College Station for many years. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Pan American Round Table, OPAS Guild, Texas A&M University Women’s Club Fine Arts Group and the TAMU Book Club. She was also a member of the A&M United Methodist Church, where she was in the United Methodist Women and the Susanna Wesley Circle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Miles Cleland.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Julaine Cleland of Heathsville, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann Elizabeth and Milburn Atkins of Bartlesville, Okla., and Cathryn Garcia-Cleland and Juan Alfonso Garcia-Trinchet of Madrid, Spain; a sister, Hazel Ward Adcock of Falls Church, Va.; three grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to the Wesley Foundation, c/o A&M United Methodist Church or KAMU Public Television.
