William Horace Griffin

March 22, 1949 — Jan. 24, 2002

PLANO — Services for William Horace Griffin, 52, of Plano are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cedar Crest Place Funeral Home Chapel in Plano.

Mr. Griffin died Thursday.

He was born in Bryan and was a 1967 graduate of E.A. Kemp High School in Bryan.

Survivors include a son, Justin Griffin; his mother, Naomi Griffin; three sisters, Pansy Dorsey of Dallas, Ruby Green of Plano and Shirley Chambers of Bryan; a brother, Damu Sudi Alii; and a host of relatives and friends.

Donald Putnam Cole

Nov. 20, 1908 — Jan. 26, 2002

Graveside services for Donald Putnam Cole, 93, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bryan City Cemetery.

Dr. Philip McLarty of First Presbyterian Church of Bryan will officiate. Burial will be in the Bryan City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hillier Funeral Home.

Mr. Cole died Saturday in Baytown.

He was a lifelong resident of Brazos County. Mr. Cole was a rancher, real estate agent and had retired from the fiscal department of Texas A&M University after 30 years of service. Mr. Cole served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Bryan.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Lee Cole.

Survivors include his son, Donald Powell Cole of Cairo, Egypt, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Bryan, 1100 Carter Creek Parkway, Bryan, Texas 77802.

May Marsh Hemming

Feb. 9, 1924 — Jan. 28, 2002

A memorial service for May Marsh Hemming, 77, of Bryan is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

The Rev. Rusty Goodwin of Northview Baptist Church will officiate.

Mrs. Hemming died Monday at her home.

Born in Bolton, Lancshire, England, she was a retired caterer and the owner of other businesses. She was a member of the Church of England. During World War II, she served with the Royal Air Force of England.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James William Hemming.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Harold White of Bryan; a brother and sister-in-law, Brian and Pam Marsh of England; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley.

Cecil R. Langley

Aug. 9, 1931 — Jan. 28, 2002

GREENVILLE, Texas — Services for Cecil R. Langley, 70, of Greenville are set for 11 a.m. Thursday at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home in Greenville. Ken Camp will officiate. Burial will be in the Prairie Valley Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Langley died Monday.

She was born in Greenville. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Survivors include her husband, James Langley of Greenville; a son, Jimmy Don Langley of College Station; four brothers, Wallace Marlar and Forrest Marlar, both of Garland, and Douglas Marlar and Curtis Marlar, both of Greenville; a sister, Gladys Arnwine of Greenville; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Dixie Gates Utsey

June 21, 1936 — Jan. 29, 2002

Services for Dixie Gates Utsey, 65, of College Station and formerly of Fort Worth are set for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Travis Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Worth. Burial will be in the Moore Gardens in Arlington.

Local arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mrs. Utsey died Tuesday.

She was born in Ada, Okla., and attended the University of Texas-El Paso. Mrs. Utsey was a realtor and was active in Bible Study Fellowship, the Travis Avenue Baptist church and the Hospice Volunteer program.

Survivors include her husband, John Utsey of Fort Worth; her sons, Chris Hardin of College Station and Chip Hardin of Dallas; two daughters-in-law, Lynn Hardin and Nancy Scheinost-Hardin; two brothers-in-law, Ross Porter and James Utsey; a sister, Linda Porter of Calabasas Park, Calif.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Bill Morgan Sunday school class of Travis Avenue Baptist Church, Fort Worth.

Richard Edwin Vrooman

March 8, 1920 - January 29, 2002

Services for Dik Vrooman, 81, of College Station, will take place at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of McGee Memorial Chapel Mortuary in Santa Fe, N.M.

Mr. Vrooman died Tuesday in Santa Fe, N.M.

Mr. Vrooman was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and was a graduate of both Oberlin College and Western Reserve University in Ohio. He received his master’s degree in architecture from Texas A&M University in 1952. He taught architecture at Texas A&M University for 45 years. Early in his career Mr. Vrooman designed the existing All Faiths Chapel for the main campus of the university. He was a fellow of the American Institute of Architects and professor emeritus of the College of Architecture at Texas A&M.

Mr. Vrooman spent seven years of his teaching career in the 1960s in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) as part of a U.S. Agency for International Development contract with Texas A&M. There he established the first school of architecture and city planning for a country that had no trained architects. He was the author of a number of textbooks, including The Secrets of Ancient Design. His knowledge of the pyramids, Stonehenge and stone circles of Easter Island led him to be named the Texas A&M University Faculty Lecturer in 1976.

Mr. Vrooman served as a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and participated in the invasions of Africa and Italy.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kelley Vrooman.

Survivors include a brother, Clare Vrooman, of Florida; a son, Chuck Vrooman of College Station; a daughter, Vikki Vrooman, of Washington, D. C.; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Texas A&M Foundation (Please send them to the Texas A&M College of Architecture) for the “Kelley and Dik Vrooman Endowed Scholarship” in the College of Architecture.

Brandon L’Shawn

Jan. 2, 2002 - Jan. 28, 2002

CLAY — Services for Brandon L’Shawn, infant, of Clay are set for 11 a.m. Friday at St. James Christian Church in Centerline, Texas. The Rev. Walter Nix will officiate. Burial will be in the Clay Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Jones-Washington Mortuary in Bryan.

Brandon died Monday in Temple.

He was born in Bryan. Survivors include a brother, Michael Pacay of Clay; two sisters, Daphne and Jasmine Carter, both of Clay; his parents, Hezekiah Carter III and Michelle Pacay of Clay; his grandparents, Daphne Deering, Hezekiah Carter Jr. and Sheryl Carter and Glenda Welday and Carl Welday, all of Houston; his great-grandparents, Lois Nix of Somerville, Barbara Carter and Hezekiah Carter Sr. of Clay and Agnes Muller of Houston.

Mitzi LaRue Harris

June 3, 1935 - Jan. 27, 2002

ALVIN — Graveside services for Mitzi LaRue Harris, 66, of Alvin are set for 11 a.m. Friday at College Station Cemetery. Col. Fred Dollar will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mrs. Harris died Sunday at Clear Lake Regional Health Center. She was born in LaPorte, Texas, and was a longtime College Station resident. Mrs. Harris worked for Texas A&M University for 19 years before retiring as restaurant manager in the food service department.

Survivors include a son, Richard “Ricky” Harris of Houston; and a sister, Ila Rosser of Nevada City, Calif.

John Will Stewart

Feb. 27, 1911 - Jan. 30, 2002

Services for John Will Stewart, 90, of College Station and formerly of Crosbyton, Texas, are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Crosbyton. Burial will be in the Crosbyton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station.

Mr. Stewart died Wednesday at Colton Inn. He was born in Belton, Texas, and lived for most of his life in Crosbyton, where he farmed, ranched and was in the farm equipment and car business.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Lennie Polvadore Stewart of College Station; two daughters and sons-in-law, Eugenia and Paul Williams of College Station and Shirley and Dale Largent of Alvin, Texas; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Crosbyton, P.O. Box 476, Crosbyton, Texas 79322.
