Maudie Lee Woods Comfort

Feb. 11, 1914 — Dec. 7, 2001

SOMERVILLE — Services for Maudie Lee Woods Comfort, 87, of Pickton are set for 11 a.m. Monday at Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville.

Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Comfort died Friday in Presbyterian Hospital in Winnsboro.

She was born in Somerville and lived in Pickton since 1991. Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a clerk at the Skillern Drug Company of Dallas. While a resident of Lorena for 20 years, she was a member of the Lorena Women’s Club, the Lorena Cemetery Association and was a charter member of the Lorena Senior Citizens’ Association. She was a member of the Pickton Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Thomas Dodson of Pickton; a son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Irma Comfort of Dallas; a sister and brother-in-law, Vera and Lloyd Willliamson of Crystal City; a brother and sister-in-law, W.P. and Wanda Woods of Eddy; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Annie Lois Denson

Nov. 14, 1915 — Dec. 7, 2001

NORMANGEE — Services for Annie Lois Denson, 86, of Hilltop Lakes are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hilltop Lakes Chapel.

Bro. Chuck Isbell of Hilltop Lakes Chapel will officiate. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery.

Mrs. Denson died Friday at her daughter’s home in College Station.

She was born in Creek, Texas, and lived in Hilltop Lakes 27 years. She was a retired homemaker and was a member of Hilltop Lakes Chapel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Selwyn Denson.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Ettabel and Bob Connell of College Station and Shirley Jean and Waylon Pierce of Richardson; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Vernon and Lydia Maples of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Carl T. and Annie Lee Maples of Humble; a sister, Geneva Stewart of Houston; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley or the American Cancer Society.

Harlie Darrell Ballenger Sr.

Nov. 18, 1937 — Dec. 7, 2001

Services for Harlie Darrell Ballenger Sr., 64, of College Station are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hillier Funeral Home.

Burial will be in College Station Cemetery.

Mr. Ballenger died Friday at his home.

He was born in Harrison, Ark., and lived in College Station for 24 years. He served in the U.S. Navy and was employed by 911 of Brazos County.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Ballenger of College Station; a son, Harlie Darrell Ballenger Jr. of Millican; a daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Douglas Bradley of Bastrop; a brother, Steve Ballenger of Harrisburg, S.D.; two sisters, Shelly Kojetin of Great Falls, Mont., and Sandy Pohlman of Harrisburg, S.D.; his mother, Lela McCaleb Budwine of Lake Jackson, Texas; and a grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley, 205 East 29th Street, Bryan, Texas 77803-6906.

Reba F. Blake

Jan. 1, 1918 — Nov. 9, 2001

HEARNE — Services for Reba F. Blake, 83, of Hearne are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Hearne.

The Revs. Bill Agee and Larry Blackman will officiate. Burial will be in Norwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at Memorial Funeral Home in Hearne.

Mrs. Blake died Sunday in Shady Oaks Nursing Home in Bryan.

She was born in Franklin and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hearne.

Survivors include a son, Donald D. Denny of Bently, La.

Maudie Lee Woods Comfort

Louis Gibson

Jan. 29, 1910 — Dec. 5, 2001

CALVERT — Services for Louis Gibson, 91, of Calvert are set for 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel Baptist Church in Calvert.

Burial will be in Beauty Rest Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Paul Funeral Home in Marlin.

Mr. Gibson died Wednesday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.

Survivors include his wife, Aletha Gibson of Calvert; three daughters, Pauline Druery and Sandra Gibson, both of Calvert, and Kara Brown of Mesquite, Texas; three sons, Louis Gibson Jr. of Calvert, Michael Gibson of Hearne and Elvis Gibson of Kansas City, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Mary Louise Belveal

Jan. 4, 1922 — Dec. 9, 2001

NAVASOTA — Services for Mary Louise Belveal, 79, of Navasota are set for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Forest Park Westheimer in Houston.

The Rev. Donald Kasper of Trinity Lutheran Church in Navasota will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m., at Nobles Funeral Chapel in Navasota.

A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Belveal died Sunday in Methodist Hospital in Houston.

She was born in Washington County and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a licensed vocational nurse.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Albert Belveal.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Milton A. Jr. and Shirley Belveal, and Sherwin Wayne Belveal, all of Katy, Texas; a sister, Margaret Carl of Spring, Texas; and a grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.

James Patrick ‘Pat’ Dodds

June 21, 1969 — Dec. 9, 2001

FRANKLIN — Services for James Patrick “Pat” Dodds, 32, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the New Baden Baptist Church in New Baden.

The Rev. Jimmy Sanders of Gause will officiate. Burial will be in the New Baden Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at McCauley Funeral Home in Franklin.

Mr. Dodds died Sunday in Bryan.

He was born in Bryan and was a graduate of Franklin High School and attended Blinn College, Sam Houston State University and Texas A&M University. He was employed by Earthgrains in Bryan as a route sales representative for three years.

Survivors include his wife, Melissa Dodds of Bryan; three daughters, Kaylee Rose Dodds, Meagan Kimberly Dodds and Madison Clarabeth Dodds, all of Bryan; his father, R.L. Dodds of Franklin; a sister, Kimberly Lingren of Bryan; a brother, Michael Dodds of Bryan; and his father-in-law, Jimmy Waldrep of Franklin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to an account for the benefit of Kaylee, Meagan and Madison Dodds at First American Bank, 1660 Briarcrest, Bryan, Texas 77802.

Odell Huseman Kettler

July 23, 1925 — Dec. 9, 2001

BRENHAM — Services for Odell Huseman Kettler, 76, of Brenham are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of William Penn.

The Rev. Eldor Harmann will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham.

Mrs. Kettler died Sunday in Bryan.

She was born in William Penn and was a homemaker. She was educated in the William Penn schools and was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, St. Jude Hospital Auxiliary and the Extension Homemakers of Washington County.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Kay Kettler.

Survivors include her husband, Wilbert Kettler of Brenham; three sons and daughters-in-law, John Lane and Lisa Kettler, Mark and Julie Kettler and Marcus “Biddy” and Linda Kettler, all of Brenham; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Johnnie Mae and Harold “Pete” Luekemeyer and Ruby and Gus Seeker, all of Brenham; four brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law, Edwin and Leona Kettler of Navasota, Herbert Kettler, Raymond and Pauline Kettler, Laura Ashorn and Lorine Schroeder, all of Brenham, and Erna and Harold Guetzlaff of Kerrville; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the youth program at Bethlehem Lutheran Church or to a charity of choice.

Verna Oleta McCarter

Feb. 28, 1915 — Dec. 10, 2001

MADISONVILLE — Services for Verna Oleta McCarter, 86, of Normangee are set for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Normangee.

The Rev. Bill Lanigan of the First United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hopewell Cemetery near Corsicana.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Madisonville Funeral Home.

Mrs. McCarter died Monday in Madison St. Joseph Health Center.

She was born in Tom Green County and lived in Normangee since 1977. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Normangee and worked as a food service manager for the Spring Branch Independent School District.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Shelton McCarter.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Herbert and Ross Ann McCarter of Normangee; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joy Lavoyce and Jimmy Phillips of Corpus Christi and Joyce Delora and Leslie Jones of Franklin; a sister, Willie Mae Long of Lake Jackson, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
