Huge shoes to fill left vacant with the passing of one of Pasadena’s finest, Mickey Powell. Mickey was born October 7, 1953 to Gessner Powell and Esther Stafford Powell of White Springs, Florida. He moved to this area as a teenager and began his life’s journey, to support and uplift those around him. Mickey gave pancreatic cancer a good fight, but passed peacefully on December 10, 2007, with family and friends at his side.
Mickey’s legacy will be one of generosity and of family. His family knew no labels. There were no steps, no exes, and no in-laws, just family.
Preceded in death by parents, and brother Randall Greggory Powell “Bubba” of White Springs, Florida. survived by his loving wife, Jackie Nash Powell, who serves this area as San Jacinto College Foundation Board Member and by sons; Anthony Powell, and wife Jennifer, and Sean Powell. Left behind are legions of friends. Friends who each stand as a living tribute to Mickey’s generosity and spirit. Friends who call him “ god’s angel here on earth”. Mickey believed in giving according to the grace received and his generosity was legendary. The depths of his giving would be reflected in stories told by those friends he supported and uplifted, from funerals he paid for because families had no funds, small business owners with a dream who came to Mickey for support, friends in need, communities in need. It wasn’t just charity; Mickey gave people their dignity back and restored their faith in themselves and others.
Mickey was the owner of Best American Iron and Metal, established in 1986. He was a rarity in the industry, leading with dignity and honesty, and the community soon realized that his word was his bond. He became one of the most respected owners in the business. He was beloved by his employees and through them, Mickey’s legacy will live on through the endowment they funded themselves through the San Jacinto College Foundation.
