Lawler at a USO dance and married on November 11, 1946. They traveled with the military until settling down to raise a family in La Porte, Texas in 1947. The hard-working couple started businesses which continue to this day. As a distinguished lady, she was an individual who cared for others. “Mama Lou” will be remembered not only for her unconditional love but also her encouraging letters and notes that impacted lives throughout the years. Besides being a caring and trusting friend, others knew her as a tireless civic leader with a keen sense if humor and quick wit. She worked with the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Red Cross, Air National Guard, Rehabilitation Foundation for East Harris County, Salvation Army, and numerous other groups. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, charter of Beta Sigma Phi Master Chapter, Texas Life Member in PTO, and served as an election judge for more than 25 years. The landscape of the La Porte community has been enhanced by her leadership. A multi-faceted, energetic lady of “firsts”, Lou was one of the first women to ride the Salt Grass Trail Ride with her beautiful white horse, Buttermilk. As a prominent business woman, Lou served as the first female director of La Porte State Bank. She was the first woman to be elected chairman of the board of the La Porte/Bayshore Chamber of Commerce. During this time, she became aware of the needs of seafarers who entered the Port of Houston at the Barbour’s Cut Terminal. In the early 1980’s she began working with the Houston International Seafarers Center Board. As a visionary and momentum builder, she led the fundraising campaign to construct a million dollar facility that now serves as a home away from home for the thousands of seafarers who sail around the world. Trained as one of the first non-clerical ecumenical port chaplains, Lou was invited to Rome in 1992 to participate in the “Apostleship of the Sea” world conference, receiving special recognition from the Vatican and a medal from Pope John Paul II for her ministry to seafarers. In Toronto, Canada, in 1995, the North American Maritime Ministry Association elected Lou to the board of directors. In 1996, she was honored when the Barbour’s Cut Seafarers Center in Morgan’s Point, Texas was named the Lou Lawler Seafarers Center in recognition of her ministry. In 1990, she was nominated for an outstanding volunteer service award by Texas Governor Bill Clements. In 1982, U.S. Congressman Mike Andrews appointed her to his Environmental Task Force. U.S. Congressman Ken Bentsen entered her name in the Congressional Record in Washington D.C. for outstanding civic contributions as a result of her energy and dedication. Her distinctions continued throughout her lifetime, including being recently name Volunteer of the Year for the Neighborhood Center of La Porte, recipient of the Steel Magnolia award for the South East Harris County, and recipient of the Gus Groos Humanitarian Award from the La Porte/Bayshore communities. In response to her passing, Senator Mike Jackson and Representative Wayne Smith of the Texas House and Senate are both preparing proclamations honoring Lou’s lifetime civic achievements to be entered into the record of the 2007 Texas Legislative session.
