DARBY, Katherine Ann Thompson: 1941 – 2011

Former Quanah resident Katherine Ann Thompson Darby, 70, of Duke, Okla., died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011. Graveside services were held Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Altus City Cemetery with the Rev. Ralph Chapman and the Rev. Scott Gramling officiating. A memorial service followed in Duke First Baptist Church. Services were under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.

She was born Aug. 29, 1941, in Duncan, Okla., a daughter of the late Robert G. (R.G.) and Zoel Wheeler Thompson. She was a graduate of Duncan High School and attended the University of Oklahoma, where she met and married Jon David Darby on June 1, 1962. The couple finished their schooling at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, where she received a degree in elementary education. They lived in Altus and Eldorado before moving to Quanah, where she taught first grade. In 1970, they moved to Duke to join the family business. She taught in Duke and Mangum and then spent 28 years teaching in Altus, helping to start the first special education program there. She was a member of the Duke First Baptist Church, the Towne and Country Club, and the Duke Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Kristin Medders of Altus, Okla.; two sons, Blake Darby of Altus and David K. Darby of Oklahoma City; a sister, Sharon Sue Quick of Nashville, Tenn.; and six grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Duke First Baptist Church Youth; to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, Texas 75265-0309; the Alzheimer’s Association, 6465 South Yale, Suite 312, Tulsa, Okla. 74136-7810; or to a favorite charity.

HAMILTON, Martha Deane: 1936 – 2011

Martha Deane Hamilton, 75, of Yukon, Okla., died Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011, in Oklahoma City.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, in Yukon’s First Baptist Church. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at Odell Baptist Church in Odell, with the Rev. Wallace Clay officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Brad Cemetery, under the direction of Smith Chapel of Chillicothe.

She was born Jan. 10, 1936, in Lubbock, a daughter of the late Fred Morrison and the late Wilma Moore Morrison. She married Robert Guthrie (Bob) Hamilton on Aug. 15, 1955, in Morton. He preceded her in death on May 29, 2002. She had lived in Chillicothe since 1989, moving to Yukon in 2005. She was a graduate of Morton High School and attended Texas Tech University. She was a member of Yukon First Baptist Church and was a former member of Odell Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and a Tupperware manager for over 40 years.

Survivors include a son, Robert Guthrie Hamilton III, of Oklahoma City; two daughters, Kim Smid of Yukon, Okla., and Traci Deane Goldstein of Oklahoma City; a brother, Tommy Morrison of Vernon; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Smith Chapel in Chillicothe.
Memorials may be made to Odell Baptist Church.

McDANIEL, Bearl: 1918 – 2011

Bearl McDaniel, 93, of Quanah, died Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, in Quanah.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, in Smith Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Monte Lumpkin, pastor of Goodlett Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Quanah Memorial Park under the direction of Smith Funeral Home of Quanah.

He was born Sept. 3, 1918, in Gould, Okla., a son of the late Paul and Sally Patrick McDaniel. A graduate of Gould High School, he served in the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II. He and Virginia Chambliss were married on Aug. 22, 1947, in Quanah. He was a longtime resident of Quanah and a farmer and rancher. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, of Quanah; two sons, Galen McDaniel and Lannis McDaniel, both of Quanah; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

BROWN, Doyle Wayne (D.W.): 1949 – 2011

Former Quanah resident Doyle Wayne (D.W.) Brown, 62, died of lung cancer at his home in Cedar Creek on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at Cook-Walden Forest Oaks Funeral Home, 6300 W. William Cannon Dr., in Austin. Arrangements are by Cook-Walden Forest Oaks Funeral Home.

He was born Sept. 14, 1949, in Dumas, the youngest of Maudie Victoria King Brown and Oliver Harrison Brown’s five children. During the Vietnam era, Brown served as a nuclear power instructor in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and a machinist mate on the nuclear-powered submarine the U.S.S. Gurnard, but was never on direct duty in the Vietnam Theater itself. He was honorably discharged after eight years in the U.S. Navy. After military service, Brown worked as final test supervisor and instructor at Eaton Corporation on the ion beam implanters. He then moved to Sematech/SVTC as a mechanical engineer on the ion beam implanters and other equipment. He served as a volunteer on the Flood Plain Task Force in Austin and as a water quality monitor for Colorado River Authority and at McKinney Falls State Park, where he was the driving force in getting swimming allowed again.

Brown loved to design and build and delighted in sharing his knowledge with others. He designed and built his present home with the help of his wife, son, and brothers. He also designed and built a cedar chest, multiple Bible boxes, kitchen cabinets, and all of the desk and furniture in his home computer room. At the time of his death, he was working on a stained glass carousel horse and an intarsa carousel horse.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by a sister, Pat.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Ethel Butts; a son, Jeff Brown; two brothers, Richard Earl and Carl Brown; a sister, Linda Brown; two grandchildren; and two foster grandchildren.

LEWIS, Orvazine: 1920 – 2011

Orvazine Lewis, 91, of Quanah, died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011, in Vernon. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, in Smith Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joseph Jones, pastor of First Baptist Church in Quanah, officiating. Interment followed in Quanah Memorial Park under the direction of Smith Funeral Home of Quanah.

She was born March 25, 1920, in Eastland, a daughter of the late Robert William and Fannie Taylor Brown. A longtime resident of Quanah, she married Elbert “Monk” Lewis on July 16, 1937, in Quanah. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church. She was formerly an activity director of the Quanah Nursing Home, a former member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of the Bonanza Belles Birthday Club for more than 50 years.

She was preceded in death by eight brothers; a son, Robert Lewis; and two grandchildren, Tiffany Mason and Don Lee.

Survivors include two daughters, Jean Inks and Carolyn Hughes, both of Vernon; a son, Billy Lewis of Vernon; a sister, Opal Williams of Weatherford; seven grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

LEWIS, Mollie L.: 1918 – 2011

Mollie L. Lewis, 92, of Quanah, died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011, in Vernon. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Larry DeLong, minister of the Quanah Church of Christ, officiating, assisted by Jerry Brewer. Interment followed in Quanah Memorial Park under the direction of Smith Funeral Home.

She was born Dec. 30, 1918, in Bone Cave, Tenn., a daughter of the late Andrew and Mattie Mae Johnson Davis. She married William Clopton Lewis in August of 1940 in Quanah. He preceded her in death on April 17, 2002. A longtime resident of Hardeman County, she was a homemaker and a gardener. She was a member of the Chillicothe Church of Christ, where she taught Bible class, and was a former 4-H leader.

Survivors include a daughter, Karla Moore of Lubbock; a son, Max Lewis of Quanah; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

JOHNSON, E.J., Jr.: 1926 – 2011

E.J. Johnson Jr., 85, of Quanah, died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011, in Quanah. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, in Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Quanah with the Rev. Wayne Hollinshead, pastor of First Christian Church of Quanah, officiating. Interment will follow in Quanah Memorial Park under the direction of Smith Funeral Home of Quanah.

He was born Oct. 8, 1926, in Quanah, a son of E.J. and Alice Poole Johnson Sr. A lifelong resident of Quanah, he was a Quanah High School graduate and attended a year of barber school. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. He and Betty Smith were married on Dec. 31, 1948, in Quanah. Johnson was a farmer and rancher and owner of Midway Barber Shop. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, a former member of the Airport Board, and served as a Hardeman County precinct election judge for many years.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Eddy Wayne on Sept. 5, 2004, and Johnny Dean on Sept. 17, 2005.

Survivors include his wife, of Quanah; two sisters, Janiece Trout of Azle and Johnnie Hutchens of Fresno, Calif.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Family visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to Meals on Wheels, 1410 Shaw Street, Quanah, Texas 79252.

SMITH, Glen E., Sr.: 1956 – 2011

Glenn E. Smith Sr., 55, of Quanah, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, in Quanah. A memorial service has now been set for 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at First Christian Church in Quanah with the Rev. Wayne Hollinshead, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Smith Funeral Home of Quanah.

He was born Sept. 19, 1956, in Hobbs, N.M., a son of the late Sherman Hill and Eddie Beatrice Collins Smith. A longtime resident of Quanah, he was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Smith was a longtime self-employed truck driver.
Survivors include a daughter, Melissa Hegwood of Midland; two sons, Jeff Smith and Glenn Smith Jr., both of Quanah; and 10 grandchildren.

GRAY, L.E.: ? – 2011

The man credited with the “QHS Fight Song” when he was band director for the Quanah Independent School District throughout the 1950s, L.E. Gray, 85, of Kerens died Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at the East Texas Medical Center Hospital in Tyler.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19, in Paschal Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Leslie Byrd officiating. Burial was in Kerens Cemetery.

A 1943 graduate of Kerens High School, Gray attended Tarleton State University and then North Texas State University. He also served in the Army Air Force, and earned a private pilot’s license. Gray started his teaching career at Kerens, where he was for three years prior to becoming band director in Quanah from 1950 to 1960. From here he moved to Wichita Falls so that his sons could attend Midwestern University. In Wichita Falls, he first taught in junior high and then at Wichita Falls High School, staying in the city for 15 years before moving to Burkburnett, where he stayed 10 years.

At Quanah, Gray not only was credited with the “Fight Song,” but also with initiating the stage band, plus he organized a drive to purchase new band uniforms, to jazz up what became rafter-raising pep rallies in the auditorium, and to allow football players to be in the band and vice-versa.

Gray was remembered with great affection by an entire generation of Quanah High School students who continued to remain in touch with him through the years.
Survivors include two sons, Bill Gray of Broken Arrow, Okla., and David “Bubba” Gray of St. Augustine, Fla.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A scholarship in Gray’s memory has been established by the QHS Class of 1954 through the Quanah Alumni Association. FLOREZ, Pedro P.: 1936 – 2011

Hardeman County native Pedro P. Florez, 75, of Abilene, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011, in an Abilene medical center.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 24, officiated by Juan Gomez and Jesse Benavidez, with arrangements under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home of Abilene.

Florez was born March 12, 1936, in Hardeman County, a son of Elvira Carlota (Perez) and Santos Zapata Florez. He married Maria Ofelia Perez on March 30, 1956. She preceded him in death. Florez moved from Quanah to Abilene in 1960, where he was employed by Gooch Meat Packing Company and later owned and operated Florez Filter Service. On July 17, 1995, he married Martina Coronado. He enjoyed playing golf and chess.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Santos P. Flores, Goyo P. Flores, and Juan P. Flores; and sisters Jovita Belamy, Guadalupe F. Perez, and Elma P. Flores.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Carlos P. Florez; a stepson, Javier Salinas; two daughters, Nicaela P. Gonzales and Elizabeth P. Cobarruvias; a stepdaughter, Marisela Mendoza; four brothers, Carlos P. Flores, Ricardo P. Flores, Ramon P. Flores, and Francisco P. Flores; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

MOORE, Elbert : 1946 – 2011

Former Quanah resident Elbert Moore, 65, of Odessa, died Monday, Dec. 19, 2011. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, at Freedom Missionary Baptist Church in Odessa, with the Rev. James Archie and the Rev. W.M. Tatum, pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Moore was born March 1, 1946, in Quanah, the youngest of Jerry and Buler Moore’s children. A graduate of Quanah High School, he moved to Odessa for a short time, then lived in Dallas for 23 years. He returned to Odessa in the late 1990s. He worshipped at Freedom Missionary Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers JB, Joe and Albert Moore; and sisters Jerrienne Toms, Pearline Houston, and Emma Jean Williams.
Survivors include a son, Elbert Miller of Fort Worth; a daughter, Sharon Prophet of Houston; three brothers, Melvin Moore of Santiago, Chile, Calvin Moore and Archer Moore, both of Odessa; two sisters, Mae Francis Carr and Helen Moore, both of Quanah; and four grandchildren.

ABERNATHY, Sweet Pea: 1933 – 2012

Sweet Pea Abernathy passed away Sunday, January 1, 2012 at her home in Altus. She was born June 29, 1933 in Quanah, Texas to Mayme and Don Drake. After graduating from Quanah High School in the spring of 1950, she married Earl Abernathy in August of that same year.

She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Altus where she was very active in Sunday school and many other numerous activities in the church. The National Association of Wheat Growers, Oklahoma Wheat Grower’s Association, and the Oklahoma Angus Association. She was a Past President of the Eroleathion Club, member of the Shortgrass Arts and Humanities, and a member of the National Cattlewomen’s Association for 40 years. She was named an Honorary Chapter Farmer by the FFA. In 1988 she was the High Plains Journal Agriculture Woman of the Year for the Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico region. She was heavily involved with the Altus FFA Chapter and the Ag Youth of Jackson County.

Sweet Pea enjoyed being involved in the family’s farming and ranching operation. She was a long time advocate for Agriculture in the State of Oklahoma and enjoyed being involved with many agriculture groups and activities throughout the years.

Sweet Pea’s greatest love, next to her family, was her enthusiastic devotion to the Democatic cause since 1966 when she went to her first convention. She held many positions of leadership in her local Democratic women’s group and worked in the local headquarters for candidates prior to elections. Her leadership positions include: Jackson County Democrat Co-Chair in 1967; Jackson County Chair since 1975; Delegate to the National Democratic Convention in 1988 and 1996; 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Vice-president for the Oklahoma Federation Democratic Women; President of the 4th District Democrat Women in 1974 and 1990; Recipient of the Outstanding Federation Democrat Women of the Year in 1988. She hosted many receptions in her home for Democrat hopefuls including David Hall, George Nigh, David Boren, Jim Townsend, Pauline Gore, David Walters, and Billy Carter (representing President Jimmy Carter), Governor Henry, and many others. She was inducted into the Oklahoma Democratic Party Activist Hall of Fame in 2003. Sweet Pea’s commitment went beyond her proclamation to be a Democrat. She “walked the walk.”

Sweet Pea is survived by her husband, Earl; three children, Don Abernathy and wife Gayle of Altus, Marita Lane and husband Kevin of Quanah, TX, Tommy Abernathy and wife Kristy of Altus; nine grandchildren, Ashley Abernathy, Braddock Abernathy, Abby Abernathy, Dr. Lance Lane and wife Lauren, Grant Lane, Alex Lane, Lindsey Dorton and husband Kyle, Lori Miller and husband Boone, and Reed Abernathy; one great grandson, Kamden Dorton.

Services have been scheduled for 10:00 am, Thursday, January 5, 2012 at First Baptist Church of Altus with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Interment will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.

The family will receive guests from 6:30-8:00 pm Wednesday evening at Lowell-Tims Chapel.
