Irene Diggs Cole Daniels
FORT WORTH -- Irene Diggs Cole Daniels, 73, a retired cook for Carswell Air Force Base and receptionist for the Working Connection, died Monday, May 12, 1997, at a local hospital.

Funeral: 1 p.m. Friday at New Vision Christian Church, 1329 Glen Garden St. Burial: Cedar Hill Memorial Park. Visitation: noon to 9 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home.

Irene Daniels was born Aug. 21, 1922, in Fort Worth.

Irene was the daughter of Elbert Diggs and Odessa Jones. She was adopted early in life by Willie B. Jones. She grew up here and attended the public schools. She completed her formal education at I.M. Terrell High School. Her grandfather, a Baptist minister, carried her to church as a young girl and she maintained a strong faith throughout life. She was formerly a member of Allen Avenue Church of Christ (now Eastland Street Church of Christ), Harvey Avenue Baptist Church and New Visions Christian Church.

She worked many years as a cook at Carswell Air Force Base. Following her retirement, she was receptionist for the Working Connection.

Survivors: Sons, James McCutcheon of Fort Worth and Donald Ray Johnson of Corpus Christi; daughter, Bobbie Morrison of Fort Worth; parent, Elbert Diggs Sr. of Fort Worth; brother, Elbert Diggs Jr. of Fort Worth; granddaughter reared as her own, Demetrice Johnson Adams and her husband, Byron, of Fort Worth; 16 grandchildren; five great- great-grandchildren; 40 great- grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

POMONA, Calif. -- Olevia Dawson, a homemaker and seamstress, passed away Wednesday, May 7, 1997, in Pomona, Calif.

Memorial service: in her honor will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 16, at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1035 E. Annie St., Fort Worth. Funeral: 1 p.m. Friday, May 16, at Inglewood Mortuary in Inglewood, Calif.

She leaves to mourn:

Survivors: Her beloved daughter, Early D. Black of Compton, Calif.; two sons, David Whiting of Pomona, Calif., and Lonzo Whiting Sr. of Fort Worth; a host of grandchildren, great- grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren; and two nieces, Louie Jewel and Rosie M. Sanders.

Marvin H. Dorr
MINERAL WELLS -- Marvin H. Dorr, 64, former Mineral Wells Airport Manager and a retired Army lieutenant colonel, died Wednesday, May 14, 1997, at home.

Funeral: 11 a.m. Friday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Burial: Woodland Park Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials: American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 280, Mineral Wells, Texas; Community Christian School; or St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

Marvin Dorr was born Sept. 19, 1932, in Bonanza, Ark., to Joseph and Sudie Dorr.

Marvin enlisted in the Army in 1951 and in 1957 married Verna L. Peerson of Fort Smith, Ark. He retired from the Army in 1971 after 20 years of meritorious service. He served in the infantry in the Korean War and was a pilot in the Vietnam War. During Marv's military service, he was awarded many prestigious medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Purple Hearts. Marvin was also active in a Korean orphanage while overseas.

Marvin retired in Mineral Wells in 1971 and worked at Can-Tex Industries for 20 years. He was employed as the Mineral Wells Airport manager until his recent illness.

Marvin was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, where he was a senior warden. He also served his community over the years by serving on the chamber of commerce, Little League Association, Men's Golf Association and other numerous community services.

He is one of our nation's humble
heroes.
He is our family's quiet hero.
Now he is one of God's
heavenly heroes.

Survivors: Wife, Verna; daughter and son-in-law, Valerie and Kenneth Martin of Mineral Wells; daughter and son-in- law, Kelly and Roy Dan Alderman of Lubbock; son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Christy Dorr of Mineral Wells; granddaughters, Linzi Alderman, Megan Martin and Kandis Alderman; grandsons, Zeke, Colt and Luke Dorr; brother, Herman Dorr of Lancaster, Calif.; sisters, Georgie Smith and Pansy Cattaeno of Fort Smith, Ark.; mother-in-law. Laverne Peerson of Fort Smith, Ark.; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and many beloved friends.

FORT WORTH -- Betty Jo Drake, 69, a homemaker, died Monday, May 12, 1997, at a Fort Worth hospital.

Betty Jo Drake was born April 27, 1928, in Austin.

Survivors: Children, Gloria Gonner, Rebecca Stanley and Grant Daily, all of Fort Worth; Dan Daily of Granbury, John Daily, Al "Bogger" Drake, Tonja Drake Via, Tracy Drake and David Drake, all of Fort Worth; brothers, Fred Heaslet of Fort Worth and Robert Heaslet of Watauga; sisters, Lib Knoll, Bonnie Allen, both of San Antonio, and Juanita Winters of Fort Worth; 26 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

John Ernest Ferguson
FORT WORTH -- John Ernest Ferguson, 84, a retired railroad switchman, died Saturday, May 10, 1997, at a local hospital.

Funeral: 10 a.m. Thursday at Shannon North Funeral Chapel. Burial: Greenwood Cemetery.

John Ernest Ferguson was born Dec. 19, 1912, in Floresville.

He had worked as a railroad switchman for 50 years until his retirement.

Survivors: Wife of 57 years, Hazel Ferguson; son, John D. Ferguson of Hurst; daughters, Cheryl L. Newton of North Richland Hills and Nancy Dent of Azle; brother, Russell G. Ferguson of Austin; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Emma Davis Gaskin
FORT WORTH -- Emma Davis Gaskin, 90, a retired maid, died Sunday, May 11, 1997, at a local convalescent center.

Emma Gaskin was born March 28, 1907, in Itasca. She was a member of Wesley Chapel. She served as a stewardess and choir president and was a member of C.I.C. Club.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert Gaskin and S.T. Stewart, her son, Vernes Stewart, and her parents, Allen and Minnie Davis.

Survivors: Daughter, Lola Johnson of Fort Worth; seven grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

FORT WORTH -- Virginia Rushing Groom, a nurse for the Osteopathic Hospital who retired after 33 years, passed away Sunday, May 11, 1997, at a local hospital.

Virginia Rushing Groom was born Aug. 3, 1930.

Survivors: Husband; one son; three stepchildren; and a host of friends.

Zola Belle Heckman was born Nov. 3, 1924, in Spring Lake, Wis.

Survivors: Daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Ray Woods of Saginaw; granddaughter, Carmin Woods of Fort Worth; and one sister.

Leora H. Hulme
BEDFORD -- Leora H. Hulme, 99, a homemaker, died Tuesday, May 13, 1997, in Hurst.

Graveside service: 4 p.m. Thursday in Greenwood Memorial Park.

Leora Hulme was born Sept. 14, 1897, in Grosbeck, Texas. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Richland Hills. She moved to Fort Worth in 1916.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William, in 1982.

Survivors: Daughter-in-law, Jody Hulme of Richland Hills; grandchildren, Robert Fuller of Fort Worth, Phillip Fanning of Grapevine, Janice Fuller of Bedford, Debbie Nowell of Haslet, William Hulme and Rick Hulme, both of North Richland Hills and Sharon Des Jardins of Fort Worth; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

FORT WORTH -- Hattie S. Johnson, 83, a retired cafeteria manager with the FWISD, died Tuesday, May 13, 1997, at a local medical center.

Mrs. Hattie S. Johnson was born Feb. 13, 1914, in Bellville, Texas.

She was a member of Baker Chapel A.M.E. Church for 52 years. She served faithfully with the Gospel Choir, the Lay Organization, Corinne Griffin Missionary Society and was a member of the Sunday school. She retired in 1979 as cafeteria manager at Tanglewood Elementary School - Fort Worth Independent School District.

Survivors: Sisters, Melissa Parker of Brenham and Maggie Wallace of Chicago, Ill.; many nieces, nephews and other family members; and a vast number of friends.
