Terrell E. Stokes
SAGINAW -- Terrell E. "Big Tex" Stokes, 77, a railway mail clerk, died Friday, June 13, 1997, at a Fort Worth nursing home after a brief illness. A date he would have thought most fitting!

Graveside service: 10 a.m. Tuesday in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Terrell E. "Big Tex" Stokes was born March 15, 1920, in Wilmer. He was raised in Wilmer and was an avid long- distance bicycle racer in his youth. He began his working career as a temporary postal employee with the special delivery unit of the Dallas Main Post Office. On this job, he road his bicycle all over Dallas on evening and Sunday shifts, always making sure--to the chagrin of many--the receipt was signed by the proper person. As he prospered with special delivery, during inclement weather he treated himself with a ride on the Texas Electric interurban.

During World War II, Terrell served in the Army. After basic training at Fort Sam Houston, he was shipped to Belfast, Northern Ireland where his Texas roots confused the local population. He then participated in the invasion of Europe and the Battle of the Bulge with General George Patton. One of his favorite stories was the return to New York and his playing the record, "Oh What A Beautiful Morning" over the ship's public address system as the Statue of Liberty came into view as they entered the harbor.

After the war, he returned to the postal service and eventually became a railway mail clerk. He road the MKT "the Katy," the T&P and the Mopac. His stories of this lost occupation were full of adventure, challenge and the memory of the stifling heat as the crew sorted mail while the trains sped along and "you just hoped they would stay on the rails or at least upright." The travel, good friends and shared hijinks, as well as the premium pay he earned, clearly were highlights of his life.

After the railway postal service was annulled, Terrell continued his government service with the Small Business Administration in Dallas and Denver and managed various local businesses until his retirement.

During the early 30s, while hitchhiking between Wilmer and Kemp, Terrell was picked up by a young couple, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, who bought him breakfast in Kemp. An avid CB radio enthusiast through the 70s and 80s, he often returned this hospitality to other travelers along the road and was quite proud of his "Big Tex" handle, all his friends on CB channel 27 and his special amplified microphone.

At age 77, he would often freely admit that most of his other relatives and friends had already passed on. Now he is with them and the "Great Majority" which he often said, "must be Democrats because there sure aren't many left here."

Survivors: Daughter, Terrie Kelley and her husband, Gerard of Arlington; son, Tracy Stokes and his wife Raquel, of Saginaw; grandsons, Charles and Matthew Stokes; and granddaughter, Caitlan Kelley.
