HALTOM CITY -- Verna L. Spearman, 86, a homemaker, died Saturday, July 12, 1997, at a hospital.

Funeral: 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home. Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Verna Spearman was born Oct. 6, 1910.

She was a devoted member of the Metroplex Baptist Church 20 years. She was an active member of the Haltom City Senior Citizens Center.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thurston Kirby.

Survivors: Husband, Henry Spearman of Haltom City; daughter and son- in-law, Joan W. and U. S. Branscum of Fort Worth; grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Russell and Donna Weatherly of Plano, Derrick and Carolyn Weatherly of Fort Worth; and five great- grandchildren.

Howard W. Story
PORTLAND -- Howard W. Story, 77, who worked in sales at an oil and gas company and retired from the U.S. Navy, died Saturday, July 12, 1997, in Portland.

Graveside service: 4 p.m. Tuesday at Rendon Cemetery of Burleson.

Howard W. Story was born April 27, 1920, in Fort Worth. He was member of the First Baptist Church of Portland. He retired from the Navy after 20 years of service. He also retired from Puffer- Sweiven Oil and Gas company.

Survivors: Wife, Rebecca Ruth Story of Portland; son, Howard Story Jr. of Tyler; daughter, Connie Sheppard of Arlington; sisters, Lora Mae Green of Corpus Christi and Doris Gilcrease of Plano; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Zelma Tanner
FORT WORTH -- Zelma Tanner, 90, a homemaker, died Saturday, July 12, 1997, at an Arlington nursing home.

Graveside service: 4 p.m. Monday in Emerald Hills Memorial Park in Kennedale.

Zelma Tanner was born Feb. 12, 1907, in Chickasha, Okla. She had lived in Handley since 1941. She was a homemaker who loved gardening, quiltmaking and crochet.

Survivors: Sons, Ron and Lou Tanner of Fort Worth and Charles and Margaret Tanner of Winfield, Kan.; two brothers and five sisters; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Donovan and Elizabeth Tanner; and great-granddaughter, Catherine Tanner.

ARLINGTON -- Mary Evelyn Thomasson, 86, a retired nurse, died Saturday, July 12, 1997, in Fort Worth.

Mary Evelyn Thomasson was born Sept. 7, 1910, in Bristol, and was a longtime resident of Arlington. She retired from Arlington Memorial Hospital.

Survivors: Sons, Bob Thomasson of Arlington and A.R. Thomasson of Bedford; daughters, Peggy Glass of Tyler, Betty McGee and Nelda Johns, both of Arlington; sister, Thelma Dickerson of Dallas; 14 grandchildren; and 24 great- grandchildren.

HURST -- Elna Isabell Umland, 73, a K-Mart supervisor, died Saturday, July 12, 1997, in Bedford.

Elna Umland was born Sept. 27, 1923, in Ainsworth, Neb. and was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. She was loved by many friends.

Survivors: Daughters, Robin Whited and husband, Morrow, of Fort Worth and Sandy Stone of New York, N.Y.; parents, Lenora and John Fay of Orlando, Fla.; brother, Bill Beatty and wife, Helen, of Warren, Ohio; sister, Kathy Miller and husband, Don, of Orlando, Fla.; grandchild, Jay Sutton of Hurst; and great- grandson, Brenden Sutton of Hurst.

BEAUMONT -- Henry Steven Vacker, 90, an accounting supervisor for Texas Pacific Coal and Oil Company for 43 years, died Saturday, July 12, 1997, in Beaumont.

Graveside service: 3 p.m. Monday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Fort Worth. Services will be under the direction of Handley Methodist Church.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Beaumont.

Henry Vacker was born Sept. 26, 1906, in Shiner. He was a longtime resident of Fort Worth, but had lived in Beaumont the last nine years.

Survivors: Son, Larry Vacker and wife, Glenda, of Beaumont; grandchildren, Barry Vacker and Lynn Vacker; and great-grandson, Justin Vacker.

Ted K. Whetstone
FORT WORTH -- Ted Kennedy Whetstone, 61, a disabled truck driver, died Thursday, July 10, 1997, at a Fort Worth hospital.

Graveside service:Noon Wednesday in Morning Star Cemetery in Naples. Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Baker Funeral Home.

Mr. Whetstone was born July 27, 1935, in Naples, the son of Arthur and Louise Whetstone. He attended school in Naples and was a member of Unionville Baptist Church. He settled here in January 1997.

Survivors: Son, Keith Whetstone of Fort Worth; daughters, Bridget Whetstone of Galveston and Teresa Whetstone LaFayette of Dallas; brothers, Godfrey Whetstone of Naples and James Whetstone of California; sisters, Mrs. Arthur Mae Boyd and Lovie Varie Jones, both of Fort Worth; many grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other family members and friends.

GRANBURY -- Don Young, 77, who was the original owner/operator of Tri- County Welding Supply, died Saturday, July 12, 1997, at home.

Mr. Young was born Nov. 30, 1919, in Los Angeles, Calif.

He was a World War II Army Veteran and member of the Episcopal Church. He was a Granbury resident 25 years.

Survivors: His wife, Gloria Amundson; sons, Lloyd Amundson and Robert Amundson; daughters, Mary Bullard, Jo Ann Jones and Carol Manuel; brother, Glen Amundson; sisters, Adeline Stanford and Doris Olson; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Ruby Perry Boyd was born May 10, 1909, in Mansfield and was a lifelong resident of Tarrant County. She retired after more than 35 years as an operator with Perry Beauty Salon. Ruby Boyd was a member of College Avenue Baptist Church.

Mrs. Boyd was the widow of Ben Orr Boyd and was also preceded in death by her brother, Glen, and a sister, Hazel.

Survivors: Stepson, Ben W. Boyd and family; sister, Virginia L. San Miguel; nieces and nephews, Glen Perry Jr., Howard Perry and Gloria Ann Newquist; three great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sons, H.W. Clark and Kenneth Clark.

Survivors: Son, W.J. Clark of Corsicana; daughters, Mary Dean of Hurst, Bobbie Roberson of Watauga and Lois Beadle and her husband, Joe, of Bedford; 20 grandchildren; and 23 great- grandchildren.
