Maria Estella Lovato was born Jan. 2, 1923, in New Mexico.

Survivors: Sons, Fred Lovato of Bedford; daughters, Marcella Hoffer of Garland; brothers, Tony Griego of Denver, Colo.; sisters, Flora Romero of California; six grandchildren; and 11 great- granchildren.

Lyla Maples was born Sept. 24, 1916, in Lometa.

Lyla taught Sunday School for many years in Richardson. She was the dietary supervisor at the Leisure Lodge in Euless for 15 years.

Survivors: Husband of 62 years, Horace F. Maples of Haltom City; sons, Ronnie Maples and wife, Brenda of Combine, Larry Maples and wife, Carol of North Richland Hills, Garry Maples and wife, Rosalie of Watauga; daughter, Lisa Wheet and her husband, Travis of Fort Worth; 10 grandchildren; 10 great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

WACO -- Bettie W. McMillion, 73, retired from the Crum and Forster Insurance Co., died Saturday, July 19, 1997, at a local hospital.

Funeral:2 p.m. Monday at BrookView Funeral Home. Burial: 5 p.m. Monday in Venus.

Officiant: Rev. Mark Wible.

Mrs. McMillion was born April 11, 1924, in Venus, where she was reared. After her retirement from Crum and Forster Insurance Co., she moved to Midlothian to be near her grandchildren. Mrs. McMillion worked at China Spring Elementary after moving to Waco.

Survivors: Daughters, Pamela McElhaney and Brenda Gordon; son, Danny McMillion; and grandchildren, Traci, Shauna, Jami, Emily and Katy.

Burgess Merrifield
FORT WORTH -- Burgess Merrifield, 16, a junior at Crowley High School, died Saturday July 19, 1997, from injuries received in an automobile accident near Sweetwater.

Funeral: 10 a.m. Tuesday at The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints on Alta Mesa Dr., in Fort Worth. Graveside services: 3 p.m. Tuesday in Albany Cemetery in Albany. Visitation: 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at the home of his parents. Bishop Brent Peterson will officiate the services.

Pallbearers: Jim Merrifield, Judson Petty, Cass Towns, Marcus Tolman, Richard King and Josh Green.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Boy Scouts of America, Longhorn Council and Cook Children's Medical Center.

Burgess Merrifield was born March 26, 1981, in Little Rock, Ark.

He died in a one-car accident near Sweetwater while returning from Philmont Boy Scouts Camp. He was a member of the Crowley High School varsity football team. He was a Life Scout and very close to being an Eagle Scout. He was also a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Survivors: Parents, John and Skylar Merrifield; brothers, Will and John Jr. Merrifield; sister, Matilda Merrifield; maternal grandmother, Matilda Nail Peeler, all of Fort Worth; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Arthur of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; numerous cousins; and other relatives.

Preston Steedley Newsom
WEATHERFORD -- Preston Steedley "Burr" Newsom, 72, a retired inspector, died Saturday, July 19, 1997, at a Weatherford medical facility.

Graveside service: 10 a.m. Monday in Central Cemetery of Parker County.

Memorials: Central Cemetery Association Central Community.

Preston Newsom was born May 10, 1925, in Parker County. He lived in Parker Country his entire life with the exception of three years he served in the Navy during World War II. He retired from General Dynamics Corporation after 36 years of service. Mr. Newsom and Dorothy Wright were married Nov. 24, 1945. He was a member of Oakridge Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Survivors: Wife, Dorothy Newsom of Weatherford; son and daughter-in-law, Aaron and Jayne Newsom of Weatherford; grandchildren, Lacie and Bryan Newsom of Weatherford; and sister, Una Shifflett of Fort Worth.
