SANGER -- Ernest Willie Crider, 88, a dairyman, died Sunday, July 27, 1997, at a Denton hospital.

Graveside service: 10 a.m. Tuesday in Jackson Cemetery in Krum. Brother John Payne will officiate.

Memorials: Alzheimer's Association; or a charity of choice.

Ernest Crider was born May 24, 1909, in Memphis, Texas, and married on Dec. 21, 1931. He was a member of the Church of Christ and was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Crider.

Survivors: Wife, Lillian Daniel Crider of Sanger; daughter and son-in-law, Jane Nance and Billy Ed Nance of Cedar Park; son and daughter-in-law, Richard Crider and Carolyn Crider of Godley; brother, Carl Crider of Ponder; four grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren.

F. Grace Gilley Davis
RIVER OAKS -- F. Grace Gilley Davis, "Mother Grace," 83, a homemaker, died Sunday, July 27, 1997, at a Fort Worth hospital.

Funeral: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home. Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers: David Gilley, Larry Gilley, Hal Gilley, Jimmy Davis, Anthony Davis, Jim Davis and Bill Davis.

F. Grace Gilley Davis, "Mother Grace," was born Oct. 11, 1913, in Azle, Texas.

Mrs. Davis enjoyed a family heritage of two proud Texas pioneer families. Her parents were William Franklin and Mattie Gordon Daugherty Gilley. She lived in Azle until her marriage to Alfred Owen Davis on Nov. 26, 1945. Mr. Davis brought to his marriage three children who came to love her as and call her "Mother Grace." Mr. Davis retired from General Dynamics and died in 1981. Mrs. Davis had lived in River Oaks for 51 years. "Mother Grace" enjoyed a very dear friendship with Mr. Bill Elliott for 13 years until his death in 1995.

Mrs. Davis was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She also enjoyed memberships in Disabled American Veterans and the Order of Eastern Star.

"Mother Grace" was a lovely Christian lady who loved the Lord, her husband, children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She will be missed by all who knew her. "Mother Grace," when asked how she was doing, always responded with a smile, "Oh, fine, I'm doing just fine." Now that she has gone home to be with Jesus, truly she is doing just fine.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Irene Gilley Page; brother, Leslie E. Gilley; dear friend, Bill Elliott; and her husband, Alfred O. Davis.

Survivors: Son, Don Davis of Houston; daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and George Lomas Jr. of Fort Worth and Janette and Bruce Glaze Jr. of Colleyville; brother, Paul Gilley of Burleson; grandchildren, Michelle D. and Mark Fitch of Atlanta and California, Lisa and Charles Nicholls of Michigan and Illinois, Carey C. Hargrove of Arlington, Brian C. Hargrove of Colleyville and Jana and Kevin Ballentine of Fort Worth; great- grandchildren, Michael E. Nicholls, Katherine B. Nicholls and David Lee A. Nicholls; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Frank D. Doyle
GRANBURY -- Frank D. Doyle, 76, a chiropractor, died Sunday, July 27, 1997, at a Granbury hospital.

Dr. Frank Doyle was born July 1, 1921, in Fort Worth. He was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church of Granbury. He was a founding member of Diamond Oaks Country Club and was a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, where an achievement award was named in his honor, Texas Chiropractor Association, Pecan Plantation and DeCordova Bend Country Club.

He was a resident of Fort Worth for 60 years and had resided in Granbury for 16 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he served as a torpedo bomber pilot aboard the USS Intrepid. He was a recipient of the nation's second highest honor, the Navy Cross. He practiced his profession in Fort Worth and Granbury for 49 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi, his parents and a brother, Bobby Doyle.

Survivors: Daughter, Peggy Peek of Saginaw; brothers, Charles Doyle of Fort Worth and Raymond Doyle of Haltom City; grandson, Bryan Peek of Saginaw; granddaughter, Jill Stewart of Saginaw; great-grandchildren, Amy and Jamie Stewart; and several nieces and nephews.

Ben Hogan was born Aug. 13, 1912, in Dublin, Texas.

He was a member of University Christian Church and was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II.

Mr. Hogan started as a caddie in Fort Worth at age 11. He turned professional in the Texas Open when he was 19.

He won the Professional Golfers' Association Championship in 1946 and 1948; U.S. Open Championship in 1948, 1950, 1951 and 1953; Western Open in 1946 and 1948; Los Angeles Open in 1946, 1947 and 1948; World's Championship in 1951 and 1953; Colonial National Invitation in 1946, 1947, 1952, 1953 and 1959; Pan American, 1953; British Open, 1953; Masters Tournament in 1951 and 1953; U.S. Vardon Trophy in 1940, 1941, 1942, 1946 and 1948; voted Golfer of the Year, 1948, 1950, 1951 and 1953; member of U.S. Ryder Cup Team in 1947, 1949 and 1951, captain in 1947 and 1949 and non-playing captain in 1967; voted Professional Athlete of the Year, 1953; winner of `Sports Magazine' Award Trophy "Sportsman of the Decade" 1946 through 1956; winner of Canada Cup matches in 1956; elected to PGA Golf Hall of Fame in 1953; elected to PGA World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974; was named as the greatest professional golfer of all time on May 4, 1956, in a poll of U.S. golf writers and sports editors; author of `Power Golf' and `The Modern Fundamentals of Golf' ; won a total of 64 tournaments; was never out of the top ten in the U.S. Open from 1940 through 1960; Masters runner-up four times and was never less than seventh from 1941 through 1956. His win in the British Open in 1953 on his only attempt was a record setting 287, breaking the course record in the process. He set the scoring record in the U.S. Open and Masters; and was PGA player of the year four times: 1948, 1950, 1951 and 1953.

Ernest B. Lawrence
FORT WORTH -- Ernest B. Lawrence, 86, a professional classical and opera singer, died Saturday, July 26, 1997, at home.

Funeral: 11 a.m. Wednesday at University Christian Church. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers: Dr. George Tade, Dr. James Newcomer and other Rotarians.

Ernest B. Lawrence was born June 22, 1911, in Nacogdoches.

He was the son of Jesse P. and Ora Alma Lawrence. He went to New York City in 1937 to study voice with Edgar Schofield. He met Telete Zorayda Lester there, another student of Schofield. He then studied voice with famed tenor Paul Auldhaus, the first American- trained tenor to sing at the Metropolitan Opera. He was associated with Billy Rose's Aquacade and sang for many years with Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians. He sang numerous leading tenor roles with the San Carlo Opera, the San Francisco Opera and the Pacific Opera Co. before accepting appointment to the faculty of the school of fine arts at Texas Christian University. He was, for many years, director of music at Magnolia Avenue Christian Church and later was tenor soloist at First United Methodist Church.

Mr. Lawrence was always a leading tenor and sang hundreds of performances in the Italian repertoire. His phenomenal ear for sound resulted in flawless Italian dialect. In later years, he worked for Banker's Life of Des Moines (now The Principal) and retired as senior agent. He was active in Rotary, being a lifetime member. He was active in civic activities including serving several terms as president of the Fort Worth Retarded Children's Association. He was also a member of the Southside Rotary Club, serving two terms as president.

In 1939, he married Telete Zorayda Lester, now professor emeritus of speech pathology at TCU.

Survivors: Wife, Telete Zorayda Lester Lawrence; son, James Lester, senior vice-president and dean of the College at the College of Santa Fe, N.M.; daughter, Valerie Alma, of St. Coletta School in Jefferson, Wis.; and twin sister, Berenice, of Federal Way, Wash.
