Memorials: The Fort Worth Garden Club for the maintenance of the Flower Clock or to Cook Children's Medical Center.

Tunstill, born in Fort Worth on Feb. 15, 1921, was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Tunstill Sr. His father, a pioneer oilman, was one of the early discoverers of oil in West Texas. Jack and his older brothers, Orville and Granville, were taught the oil business from almost infancy by their father. His parents and his brothers, Orville, Granville and James, a doctor, and his sister Ruby, wife of Eldon Busby, preceded him in death.

Before he was a teenager, Jack had been in the oil fields and associated with the oil business in its many phases. After graduating from Paschal High School and Texas Christian University, he became a full-fledged oilman. For over 20 years, he and Charles Renaud of Midland operated a partnership. His own personal royalty interests covered 38 states. He also managed Tunstill Oil and Land Co. and the estates of Mrs. Roy Stewart, Dr. Paul Lipps, his father-in- law, and the Orville and Mercedes Tunstill estate, his brother and sister-in-law.

Tunstill and his wife, Jean, traveled around the world for over 33 years. In 1977 they were honored by the government to travel to China with Pan Am, being one of the first groups admitted to China after World War II. They shared their experiences with many friends and organizations, giving lectures and showing slides. They returned to China again in 1987. They covered Europe, Asia and Africa, making friends wherever they went and bringing home many artifacts. Jack contended his favorite trips were to Austria, Switzerland, Russia, Cambodia and Africa. These trips were supplemented with cruises to Alaska, the South Pacific and Hawaii. Many of the cruises were shared with their grandchildren.

The beautiful flower clock that stands at the entrance of the Botanic Garden was Tunstill's idea from flower clocks he had seen in Italy and Switzerland. The clock was designed and built during his wife's tenure as president of The Fort Worth Garden Club and was given to the City of Fort Worth. Recovering from heart surgery, he watched its dedication from his car.

Tunstill, a preservationist, saw the history of the oil industry fleeting into oblivion. For some 20 years he was avidly interested in preserving its history. Finally, through sheer determination and financial help from his oil associates his dream was realized. `Oil Legends of Fort Worth,' containing the histories of early Fort Worth oilmen, companies and foundations was published in December, 1995. The book was published under the umbrella of the Petroleum Club. Recognized by historians and his peers, Tunstill received the William Jary Award for the written preservation of Tarrant County history.

Having been a trustee and with a particular interest in children, he insisted the profits from the book be given to Cook Children's Medical Center. Today the hospital has received some $75,000 for abused children from the proceeds of the book.

If one were looking for Tunstill at lunch, he could always be found on the 40th floor of the Petroleum Club with the "Armadillo Posse." This is a group of oilmen who spin their yarns and make deals over a table in a corner of the Men's Grill. A member of the Posse, said, "Anything you wanted to know about Fort Worth history or Texas oilman, Jack could tell you. He was our mentor. It is an historical tragedy that much of the true and colorful history of Fort Worth and West Texas oilmen and their operations is lost today because Jack never found time to record it."

During the 1940s, Tunstill was vice president of the Texas Junior Chamber of Commerce and traveled throughout the United States representing Texas. During that time the late Speaker Sam Rayburn appointed him to serve as `King Cotton' in Washington D.C. After his marriage to Jean Lipps, they established a home in Edgecliff. Through his efforts the area was incorporated into Edgecliff Village and he became its first mayor. After moving to Westover, he became active in its civic affairs. He and Jean also maintained "second" homes for 21 years at Boat Club Cabana and a villa in Acapulco for 14 years.

Tunstill served as a vice president of the Steeplechase Club. Not to break his record of perfect attendance for 48 years, he attended the ball last year.

Tunstill was a past president of the Petroleum Club, of which he was a founding member. Through his efforts the club was not dissolved after the major oil companies moved from Fort Worth. He was a founding member and board member of the Century II and Headliners clubs. He served on the boards of Ridglea Country Club, Fort Worth Boat Club, and was a former member of River Crest Country Club. He held memberships in Texas Independent Producers, Royalty Owners Association, American Association of Petroleum Landmen and the Independent Producers Association of America, in which he held an office.

Survivors: Wife, Jean Lipps Tunstill; daughter, Jeanie Tunstill Cowden and husband, J. Coley Cowden, of Austin; granddaughter, Christy Cowden Little and husband, Patrick Little, of Houston; grandson, J. Coley "Duke" Cowden Jr. and wife, Heidi Cowden, of Austin; grandson, Allen Tunstill Cowden of Dallas; brother, W.A. Tunstill Jr. and wife, Fay Tunstill; and several nieces and nephews.

Archie Leroy Warnick
FORT WORTH -- Archie Leroy Warnick, 79, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 1997, of lung cancer at his home in Fort Worth.

Funeral: 11 a.m. Friday at Martin's Funeral Home. Burial: Holly Hills Memorial Park in Granbury.

Archie L. Warnick was born April 29, 1918, in Warrensburg, Mo. After the death of his mother, he moved in childhood to Fort Worth, where he worked training and showing thoroughbred horses around the country until his early 20s. He married Laverne Austin in 1940 and was drafted into the Army a short time later. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. He jumped in Normandy and was then captured and held as a POW by the Germans, finally escaping into Russia and following a course which ended in Turkey before he was reunited with the Army and made his way home to his family.

His experiences as a POW created the belief that, as humans, we are all in this world to help one another -- a message he carried for the rest of his life. He received two Bronze Stars while serving his country faithfully.

After his discharge, Archie had several experiences as a small businessman before he trained and began working as a barber on the west side of Fort Worth, where he built a large following of loyal customers. He continued his training through the years, achieving the status of Master Barber. He was appointed to the Board of Barber Examiners, a post he held for over 10 years as he attempted to improve both the level of training for incoming barbers as well as the working conditions for all his colleagues. He also served as president of the Texas State Board of Master Barbers several years. In 1983, he moved his barber business to Granbury and worked several years more before retiring.

Mr. Warnick was a member of VFW Post 7835 in Granbury and Ex POWs of America, American Legion Post 491 in Granbury.

He was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Max Warnick, and his older sister, Edith Robbins.

Despite meeting many challenges throughout his life, Archie was able to face his life with courage and humor, and to accomplish many things with his love of learning. He agreed with Andrew Jackson: "One man with courage makes a majority." He will be greatly missed.

Survivors: Archie continued to be a dedicated and loving husband to Laverne, who survives him, until his dying day. His daughters, Judith Warnick- Sweeney of Atherton, Calif., and Gail Waller of Fort Worth, always saw him as their hero, with his quiet strength and gentle ways, and depended on him for his love, graciousness, intelligence and laughter, which he brought to everything he did. He was an exemplary mentor to his four grandchildren: Andrea Gail Williams of Menlo Park, Calif., Anthony Bruce Williams of Happy Camp, Calif., Robert Scott Waller of Fort Worth and Michael Shannon Waller of Copperas Cove. He is also survived by two granddaughters-in-law, Carol Waller and Jodi Waller, as well as five great- granddaughters, Katie Lea Waller of Copperas Cove, Hattie Lea Williams of Happy Camp, Calif., Harper Calyn Waller of Fort Worth, Michaela Shay Waller of Copperas Cove and Hayden Lynsey Waller of Fort Worth as well as a network of friends and other family members.
