Phyllis Jean Daniels Atwood
GRUVER — Phyllis Jean Daniels Atwood, 76, of Gruver died Wednesday, February 29, 2012.
Graveside services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2012 in Gruver Cemetery with the Rev. Kyle Brock officiating. Arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.
Phyllis was born April 9, 1935, in Marbelton, Wyo. She married Harvey Eugene Atwood on Sept. 23, 1953.
Harvey and Phyllis moved to Texas in 1965 and bought Nancy’s Cafe in Gruver three years later. They bought the Gruver Hotel and Coffee Shop two years later and turned it into El Vaquero, a historical restaurant that has attracted diners from all around to taste Phyllis’ famous Mexican food and hot sauce and to enjoy her unique hospitality and service.
These traits weren’t just a business strategy for Phyllis; it was a way of life. She tirelessly served those around her, rising early and going to bed late after everyone had been tended to. Her children, grandchildren and everyone blessed enough to know her attest to her ability to make even strangers feel welcome and at home. “She never met a stranger,” boasts her husband, Harvey, “and they all loved her for it.”
This love of family and friends was rooted in her love for Christ, in whose name she was baptized in 1966 at Victory Baptist Church. She loved music, dancing and meeting new people, all of which she is enjoying perfectly right now in the presence of her Savior.
Jesus said in Mark 10:43-44, “Whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.”
Phyllis served and honored others selflessly and tirelessly, laboring so that each was fed, each was comforted, each was provided for and each was welcomed home. Phyllis was truly great and first among many. She will be sorely missed, greatly celebrated and tightly embraced when we join her on high.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew Raymond Daniels and Nettie Francis lewis Daniels; 11 of her 12 brothers and sisters; a grandson, Sheldon Ross Atwood; and a grandson-in-law, James E. Smith.
Survivors include her husband, Harvey Atwood; a sister, Louise Marie Marx of Green River, Wyo.; three children, Phil Atwood and wife Toni of Gruver, Sandy Kuriyama and husband Kevin of Plainview and Scott Atwood and wife Tasha of Vega; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
