Billy Ed Vernon

LAKE BROWNWOOD — Billy Ed Vernon, 81, of Lake Brownwood died Thursday, October 20, 2011.

Services were at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 23, 2011 in Rocky Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Justice and Ron Miller officiating. Burial followed in Rocky Creek Cemetery. Arrangements were by Heartland Funeral Home of Early. The family received friends prior to the service at the church.

Billy was born Dec. 21, 1929, in Gruver to James Edward and Winnie Boyd Vernon. He graduated from Gruver High School and later from Texas Tech University with a degree in engineering. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

Billy was married to Iva Dell Williams on July 11, 1952, and they recently celebrated 59 years of marriage together. He worked as a civil engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation in Amarillo for 15 years, later serving as the resident engineer at Snyder TxDoT for 15 years, and then as assistant district engineer at Brownwood TxDoT, where he retired in 1995. He lived at Lake Brownwood since 1990, and was a member of the Rocky Creek Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Floydean Shook.

Survivors include his wife, Iva Dell “Pete” Vernon of Lake Brownwood; three daughters, Cheryl Ward and husband Lonnie of Flower Mound, Debra Skinner and husband Phil of San Angelo, and Julie Kimmel and husband Tom of Kingsland; eight grandchildren, Kristin Dorsett and husband Kevin, David Ward, Charity Miller and husband Ron, Crystal Bolton and husband Jeremy, Belinda Chernicky, Suzanne James and husband Mark, Shauna Olson and husband Jeff and Bobbye Archer and husband Joe; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Roger Vernon of Tomball; two sisters, Wynell Shaw and Judy Fletcher, both of Amarillo; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials be to Lighthouse Hospice of Brownwood, 107 D S. Park Drive, Brownwood, TX 76801.

Wilbur Allen Hull

Wilbur Allen Hull passed away peacefully at his home early Sunday morning in Lago Vista, TX at the age of 73. He devoted over thirty years of service to public education as a teacher, administrator, Texas Education Agency executive, and a leader of youth organizations promoting commitment to community and service. Throughout his career he was recognized on the state and national levels, receiving numerous awards and accolades for his accomplishments and dedication.

Wilbur received an undergraduate degree from the University of North Texas, a masters degree from Texas State University, and completed post graduate work at both Texas A&M and the University of Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Miller Hull; sons Allen Hull and wife Donna, Rodney Hull and wife Heidi; daughter Valerie Hull Guerra and husband Adam, all of Lago Vista. He has 6 grandchildren; Tyler Hull, Chandler Hull, De Ana Hull and fiancé Mark Johnson, Grant Guerra, Cole Hull, Desiree Pill and husband Michael and one great grandson, Matthew Hull-Johnson. Other family members include Gwen and Joe Kale of Pt. Venture, TX. Richard and Sheryl Miller of Pittsburg, TX.; two nieces, one nephew, 6 great nephews, 2 great nieces, one aunt, one uncle and numerous cousins all of whom will remember him fondly and miss him tremendously.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Beck’s Funeral Home, 1700 East FM 1431 in Cedar Park at 11:00 a.m. with interment at Palm Valley Lutheran Church, 2500 East Palm Valley Blvd., Round Rock. Viewing will be at Beck’s Funeral Home Friday, October 28, 2011 from 6 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Ollive “Babe” Pendergraft

SPEARMAN - Olive "Babe" Kirk Pendergraft died on Friday, October 14, 2011 in Spearman, TX.

A memorial services was held at Hansford Manor on Sunday, October 16, 2011 at 3 p.m. Funeral services were held on Monday, October 17, 2011 at 10 a.m. in the First Christian Church of Spearman with Rev. Gary Smith, minister of First Christian Church of Stratford, officiating. Interment was in Holt Cemetery, under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Babe was born on March 2, 1913 in Comanche, TX. She moved to the Holt Community in Hutchinson County when she was three months old, traveling in a covered wagon. She attended Holt School, Spearman Schools, and was a 1932 graduate of Goodwell High School. She attended Panhandle State University. She married Owen Kenneth Pendergraft on August 28, 1933 in the J.R. Kirk Family home.

She was a homemaker, a member of the First Christian Church of Spearman and the Holt Home Demonstration Club, and was Ms. Hansford Manor of 2010.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Owen Pendergraft, in 1993, and a son, James Beck.

Survivors include her daughter an her husband, Betty and Richard Gaines of Spearman; three granddaughters, Connie and Mark Tindal of Wichita, KS, and Glenda Louise Close and Peggy Jo and Allen Varnon, all of Spearman; two great-granddaughters, Shawna and Nate Brinson of St. Louis, MO and Haley Noble-Tucker of Amarillo; six great-grandsons, Byron Wright of Kansas City, MO, Freddie and Becky Tucker of Arlington, TX, Justin and Anna Tucker of Borger, Jason and Donia Varnon of Spearman, Eric and Leslie Varnon of Fort Worth, and Richard and Claire Varnon of Weatherford; nine great-great-grandchildren, Jordan and Linzey Tucker, Austin, Colton and Rylan Tucker, Taylor and Landrie Varnon, Noah and Cooper Varnon; three nieces, Janet Reger of Spearman, Karen Fiedler of Beaverille, OR, and Nancee Rush of Bastrop, TX; a nephew, W.L. Beck of Vacaville, CA; numerous great-nieces, great-nephews and other family members; and many dear friends.

Frankie Haines

FOLLETT — Frankie Haines, 75, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2011.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Follett Chapel with M.D. Methvin and J.J. Manning officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Perryton.

Mrs. Haines was born Sept. 19, 1936, in Shattuck, Okla., to Thomas and Gladys Wilson. She married Donald Haines on Aug. 6, 1962, in Spearman.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Margie McDaniel of Ulysses, Kan., Theresa Davis of El Reno, Okla., and Donna Haines of Ulysses, Kan.; two sons, Duane Hodges of Hooker, Okla., and Rene Haines of Follett; a sister, Helen Hemphill of Buena Park, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorials be to a favorite charity.

James Lorenzo (JL) Pierce

PAMPA, TX - The Prairie Fountains ran dry on Sunday, October 9th, 2011. James Lorenzo (JL) Pierce was born on April 10, 1925 in Spearman, Texas. J.L. spent his life building and repairing windmills on many Texas Panhandle ranches, in the canyons, and on the prairie. His wife and the mother of his five children, Jaunita Faus Pierce, and his beloved daughter, Jammie Dean Pierce, preceded him in death.

In Pampa, Texas, his youngest daughter, Rosa Pierce Roberts, and his grandchildren, Jessie Renae Roberts, Samuel AJ Pierce-Roberts, and Brandy Roberts (Antonio), and his great grandchildren, Destiny, Adrian, and Natalie, cared for J.L. His youngest son, James Tylan Pierce (Mendy), and grandchildren, Whitney, Garrett, and Dakota, lived close by in McLean, Texas and assisted with his care. J.L.’s oldest son, Lynn Diaz (L.D.), the family genealogist, lives in Gage, OK. His eldest daughter, Karon Pierce Hardy and his cherished son in law, Ulysses Quincy Hardy, live in Virginia as well as his first grandchild, Shameka Nicole Hardy of Hampton. His eldest grandson, Derek Quincy Hardy, lives in Bayamon, Puerto Rico with his wife, Danae Hernandez Rodriguez, and their newborn daughter, Dahlia Nicole Hardy Rodriguez. J.L. leaves behind a wonderful group of other relatives and friends.

On Thursday, October 13th, a viewing will be held from 9-11 a.m. at Boxwell Brothers in Spearman, Texas. Family and friends are invited to gather for lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Union Church in Spearman. A graveside service will be performed at the Hansford County Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Blossom Matthews, First United Methodist Church, Pampa, officiating. Lucille McClellan Cagle

BAYTOWN, TX - Lucille McClellan Cagle, 88, left her earthly body and was welcomed into Heaven by her husband, parents, brothers, sister, and other family members on Thursday, October 6, 2011. Visitation will be Monday, October 10 at 1 p.m. followed by services at 2 p.m. Both will be held at St. Mark's United Methodist Church. Rev. Linda Tolon and Rev. Mike Proctor will officiate.

She was born October 8, 1922, in Gruver, Texas, where she grew up on a farm. Some of her favorite artwork depicts the windmills that were a common sight on farms throughout the Texas Panhandle when she was growing up.

After graduating from high school, she went on to Texas Tech University where she received a bachelor's degree in Home Economics/Nutrition. She taught home economics in the Gruver schools and also worked as head dietician at an Amarillo hospital prior to meeting and marrying the love of her life, John Ellis Cagle. She was devoted to being a wife, homemaker, mother and later a grandmother. While her children were in junior high and high school, she received her master's degree in education from West Texas State University.

Lucille was very creative—she loved to sew, cook, decorate her home and create new craft projects with many of her friends. A member of Cedar Bayou Grace United Methodist Church since moving to Baytown in 1967, she sang in the chancel choir, was active in United Methodist Women activities as well as Sunday School. She was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and served as volunteer for Odyssey Hospice for about 10 years. Lucille also enjoyed playing games with friends---dominoes, cards, etc.---and she loved to win.

Her love of traveling prompted her and John to get a motor home and join the "Gadabouts" travel group where they made lifetime friends and enjoyed many trips over the years. After John passed away in 1988, Lucille continued to travel as a single with the "Gadabouts" until 2003. She also made several trips with the Lee College Sr. Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dave and Devona McClellan; brothers, Randolph McClellan, Herbert McClellan and Ralph McClellan; one sister, Ruth McClellan Landon; and her husband, John Cagle.

She is survived by a daughter, Jonna Cagle-Page and a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Cheryl Cagle, and two grandchildren, Holly Cagle and Kenneth (K.P.) John Page, all of Baytown.

The family would like to thank the many treasured friends for their love, prayers and support offered throughout Lucille's life, especially over the past five years. They would also like to thank all the caring members of both Cedar Bayou Grace United Methodist Church and St. Mark's United Methodist Church for all the visits to Lucille, the loving cards and gifts, their prayers and for providing communion to Lucille at St. James House. Also, thanks to the wonderful staff of Odyssey Hospice, St. James House and Green Acres Nursing Home for the care they gave our mother.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 10, 2011 at 2 p.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Baytown.

Sara Dossett

SPEARMAN - Sara Dossett, 96, went to join her Lord and Savior on October 10, 2011, following a brief illness.

Services will be held on Friday, October 14, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church of Spearman, followed by interment at Hansford Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home.

Sara was born on December 19, 1914 on her parents’ ranch near Beyeros, NM, the 6th of 14 children. The nearest school being Clayton, over 60 miles distance, her mother and siblings lived in Clayton during the school year.

When the wife of a neighboring rancher fell ill, Sara was sent to help with the children and to household chores. There she met and fell in love with a ranch hand, Larance T. Dossett. They married on october 15, 1932 in Las Vegas, NM, and soon thereafter moved to the Spearman area. Sara and Larance were happily married for 58 years until Larance’s death in October 1990.

Sara was a member of the First Christian Church of Spearman from the early 1930’s until her death. Her interests included reading, sewing, cooking (devilled eggs being a favorite at potluck dinners), gardening, and travel. She loved watching most sports on television. Friends and family knew not to call or visit during a Dallas Cowboy game. She listened to all Lynx basketball and football games when they were aired on the local radio station. She was a member of the Home Demonstration Club from the 1940’s until it disbanded in the late 1950’s, and volunteered at the Thrift shop from its founding until her recent illness. She worked in the Spearman School Cafeteria for over 20 years.

She is survived by her three children, Bernard (Theresa) Dossett of Amarillo, Diane Carter of Lubbock, and Buddy (Becky) Dossett of San Benito; 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 9 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Eleanor Elemand of Dumas; a sister-in-law, Caro Lee Frantz of Spearman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pauline Eithol Dickison

STINNETT — Pauline Eithol Dickison, 87, formerly of Borger, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, at Hansford Manor.

Services were at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 4, 2011 in Faith and Grace Church in Spearman with Gary Smith, pastor of First Christian Church of Stratford, officiating. Burial was in Stinnett Cemetery in Stinnett. Arrangements were by Brown Funeral Directors of Borger.

Mrs. Dickison was born Oct. 22, 1923, in Sapulpa, Okla., to Walter Leroy and Wilma Lois Faith McDaniel Tarr. She married Truman Dickison in Ponca City, Okla., on Aug. 14, 1975.

Survivors include two sons, Glenn Robinson of Spearman and Charles Robinson of Williamsburg, Va.; one daughter, Linda Kay Bookout; two sisters, Metta Moore of Oklahoma City and Isabel Wells of Harrah, Okla.; four grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.

Betty Jo Pierce Vernon

Betty Jo Pierce Vernon, long time resident of Spearman, TX, went to be with her heavenly Father on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at the age of 83. She passed away in Kingwood, TX surrounded by her family.

Betty was born December 19, 1927 in Amarillo, TX, to Allen and Eva Pierce. Although she was an only child, she grew up with numerous cousins in a close knit Christian family. She was a 1945 graduate of Spearman High School and attended college at West Texas State in Canyon, TX. On November 9, 1946 she wed J.P. (Peter) Vernon in Spearman, TX, with whom she had five children. They raised their children in Spearman and moved to Winters, TX in 1995. In 2005, Betty and Peter went to live close to their daughters in Kingwood, TX.

She was an active member of First Christian Church in Spearman, where she taught Sunday School and participated in CWF. She found joy in being involved in her children’s activities. These activities included serving as Girl Scout and 4-H Leader, FFA mom, and chauffeuring speech tournaments. Betty enjoyed attending her children’s basketball games, tennis tournaments, swim meets, and stock shows. Later in life, she became an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Winters where she served in the altar guild. She enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels with her best friend, Clara Bell. All her life she was a dedicated homemaker and quilter, creating lasting memories for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her husband, Peter Vernon. She is also survived by her daughter Johny Roach and husband John of Kingwood, TX; Bonnie Jackson and husband Mark of Huffman, TX; Scott Vernon and wife Molly of League City, TX; Connie Bridges and husband Jimmy of Odessa, TX; and Tracy Vernon and wife Sharyn of Nevada, TX. Grandma Betty’s surviving grandchildren are Dr. Greg Roach and wife Renee, Chris Roach, Courtney Hurst, Mandy Jackson, August Vernon and wife Sara, Austin Vernon, Blake Bridges and wife Lindi, Brady Bridges, Bailey Bridges, and Jack Allen Vernon. Her great grandchildren are Parker and Pryce Roach, soon to be born Liv Harlow, Parker and Drew Vernon, Ava Vernon, and Braydon, Bryli, and Brogan Bridges.

A viewing was held on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Boxwell Brother’s Funeral Home. Graveside services were held following the viewing at 11:00 a.m. at Holt Cemetery in Spearman, TX.

Cora Nichols

SPEARMAN — Cora Nichols, 88, of Spearman, died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011.

Graveside services were at 10 a.m. Monday, October 3, 2011 in Hansford Cemetery with Larry McCollum and Bill Turner officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Mrs. Nichols was born Oct. 20, 1922, in Beckham County, Okla. She married Garland Monroe Nichols on Sept. 18, 1937, in Perryton.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Kizziar and Nancy Kelley, both of Spearman; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to Hansford Manor, 707 S. Roland St., Spearman, TX 79081.

Winson (Win) Virgil Heath

SHALLOWATER - Winson (Win) Virgil Heath passed away on September 17, 2011 at 3:45 am in Lubbock, TX.

Memorial services were held on the September 24, 2011 at 12th Street Church of Christ in Shallowater, TX.

Win was born October 10, 1924 in Wayne, OK. He was raised in Gruver, TX, graduating from Gruver High School May 25, 1942. He enlisted in the Marine Corp in December 1942 and served in the Pacific during WWII. He was honorably discharged on December 31, 1945. A member of the church of Christ from his youth, he had just celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary on March 23, 2011.

Win was preceded in death by his parents, Chester C & Ruby Heath; 2 sisters Betty Jean Cotter of Gruver and Irene Huber of Massachusetts; 1 brother Donald Heath of Amarillo; and his oldest son Dale Wayne Heath, who was living in Germany.

He is survived his wife Delva (Del) L Heath of Shallowater, TX; a daughter Glenda K Heath also of Shallowater; 2 brothers and their wives Chester & Ora Mae Heath of Gruver and J B (Jim) & Shirley Heath of Stinnett, TX; 2 sons and their wives Terry & Mechelle Heath of Boaz, AL and Lynn Alan & Diane Heath of Hixson, TN; 3 grandchildren Jeffrey & his wife Kimberly Heath of Bartlett, TN, Timothy & his wife Jennifer Heath of Henderson, TN, and Bethany Heath of Hixson; 3 great-grandchildren Dylan Kai, Jacob Andrew, and Joshua Caleb Heath; and a myriad of cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Leona Parker Woods

Leona Parker Woods, 89, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011.

Services were at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 in First Christian Church Robinson Chapel with Dr. Linda Parker officiating. Burial was at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Miami Cemetery in the Maddox Parker section. Arrangements were by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.

Mrs. Woods was born March 15, 1922, in Miami to Franklin Spencer and Minnie Maddox Parker. Leona graduated from Miami High School in 1939, and from Draughn’s Business College in Lubbock in 1941, certified in accounting. She then earned a Bachelor of Science degree from West Texas A&M University in education and business.

She was employed at Pampa Independent School Tax Office at the time she met John W. Woods. They were married on April 15, 1954, at her parents’ home in Miami. Soon after marriage, they moved to San Antonio for John to attend St. Mary’s University School of Law. They moved to Stratford in 1968, where Mr. Woods opened his law office. He later became Justice of the Peace and Sherman County Judge. Mrs. Woods taught school two years in Spearman and then taught in the Stratford schools until she retired.

Mrs. Woods became a member of the First Christian Church in Miami at an early age, and in the remaining years of her life she was active in Christian churches in the towns she lived in.

Leona was an avid quilter and won many ribbons in quilt shows for the work on her quilts. She was adept in other forms of stitchery such as needlepoint, embroidery, crewel and mending. While living in Stratford, she was the mending lady for the nursing home.

She was always a volunteer wherever she lived. She taught Sunday school classes while living in Stratford. She has been a longtime member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society and was a life member of Texas State Teachers Association, Panhandle Piecemakers Quilt Club in Pampa, and Canyon Retired Teachers.

Since moving to Amarillo in 1995, she had been active in First Christian Church, the Friendship Class, the Happy Timers, the Ruth group of the Christian Women’s Fellowship, and a member of the Continental Resident Council. John and Leona moved to Amarillo in 1995, and moved to the Continental Retirement Center in 2000. John died Jan. 31, 2006. In October 2006, Leona moved into the Harrington Assisted Living Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and a nephew, Jerry W. Curl of McAllen.

Mrs. Woods is survived by a sister, Mary Alice Curl of Amarillo; brothers, Clifford Parker and wife Ethyle of Albuquerque, N.M., and Frank Parker and wife Joan of San Antonio; a sister-in-law, Alvro Dorman and husband Leo of Virginia Beach, Va.; four nieces, Linda Parker, Shari Parker, Barbara Parker Morse and husband Robert and Leslie Boerger and husband Ron; two nephews, Tom Curl and wife Lynda and Paul Parker; three great-nieces, Kennedy Shuler, Megan Jans and husband Michael and Clair Parker Siburt; six great-nephews, Rob Curl, Chris Curl and wife Vanessa, Brian Curl and wife Kristi, Justin Curl, Grant Shuler and Andrew Morse; four great-great-nieces, Jordan, Taylor, Autumn and Dakota Curl; and two great-great-nephews, Hunter Curl and Jacob Jans.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials be to First Christian Church College Scholarship Fund, 3001 Wolfin Ave., Amarillo, TX 79106; or Roberts County Museum, P.O. Box 249, Miami, TX 79059.
