Joanne Graves

SPEARMAN — Joanne Graves, 80, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in First Christian Church in Spearman with the Rev. Roy King officiating. Burial will be Moore City Cemetery in Moore, Okla. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Mrs. Graves was born July 30, 1931, in Wichita, Kan. She graduated from high school and attended business school for one year. She moved from Raleigh, N.C., and has lived in the area since 1981. She married Albert Henry Graves on June 3, 1951, in Wichita. He preceded her in death on Feb. 28, 2009.

Mrs. Graves was a homemaker. She and her husband Albert owned and operated the Baker Hotel and Bus Station in Spearman upon Albert’s Retirement in 1981, until they sold it in 1991. She was Very active in the Order of the Eastern Star in Raleigh and in Spearman.

Survivors include a two daughters, Rebecca Wiggins and husband Jeff of Spearman and Deborah Jones and husband C.B. of Maiden, N.C.; a sister, Jeanene Wilson of Lubbock; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The family suggests memorials be to First Christian Church of Spearman; or Hansford Manor in Spearman.

Garry Lynn Dodd

WINNSBORO, TX - Mr. Garry Lynn Dodd, age 56 of Winnsboro, passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2011.

Funeral services will be at Beaty Funeral Home at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, September 8, 2011 with Dr. David Rose officiating. Interment will be at Sharon Cemetery, Winnsboro, TX. Arrangements are being handled by Beaty Funeral Home, 816 W. Broadway, Winnsboro, TX where the family will receive friends from 3-4 p.m. on Thursday, September 8, 2011.

Garry was born in Borger, Tx. on January 1, 1955 to the late J.M. and Nadine Smith Dodd. He was a graduate of Texas A & M at Commerce, an administrator at P.E. Wallace Middle School in Mt. Pleasant, and a member of Tennison Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Ronnie Dodd.

He is survived by his loving wife, Debbie Brewer Dodd of Winnsboro; two daughters, Bree Dodd Bakke and husband Kevin of McKinney and Talia Dodd Hegmann and husband Kenneth of McKinney; brothers, Harold Dodd and wife Velda of Sulphur Springs, Bill Dodd and wife Myrna of Graham, Bobby Dodd and wife Linda of Texarkana, TX; and two grandchildren, Ella Grace Bakke, and Maggie Lynn Hegmann.

Because of Garry's passion for education and love of children, we request in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Reading is Fundamental at www.rif.org.

Jeffrey Robert Wilson

PERRYTON — Jeffrey Robert Wilson, 54, died Wednesday, August 17, 2011.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, August 22, 2011 in Harmon Cemetery in Harmon, Okla. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Perryton.

Mr. Wilson was born March 10, 1957, in Perryton to Roy and Emma Wilson. He was self-employed and owned Wilson Appliance for many years.

Survivors include his mother of Spearman; a brother, Jim Wilson of Perryton; and two sisters, Cora Sanders and Ruth Flaming, both of Perryton.

The family suggest memorials be to a favorite charity.

Sara Nealy

CANADIAN — Sara Nealy, 80, of Canadian died Saturday, August 20, 2011.

Services were at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2011 at The River Ministries, 221 Main, Canadian, Texas. Burial was at 3:00 p.m. Monday in Hansford Cemetery in Spearman, Texas. Arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Mrs. Nealy was born on February 17, 1931 on a farm outside of Spearman, Texas to Ella Onida and John Workentine Buschman. She had worked for the government in quality assurance. She had a story published in Guidepost in January 1981 with the title of "The Deadly Snow". It has remained available through the best of Guidepost.

Sara lived a life dedicated to faith in God. Through her faith God answered her prayers, showered her with blessings and provided miracles abundantly. Sara's testimony will live on through her family and many lives she has touched.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Nealy; one daughter, Nina Cowan; and one son Travis Nealy.

She is survived by her children, Richard Nealy of Queen Creek, AZ; Joella (Nealy) Karber of Balko, OK; Rebecca Nealy of Round Rock, TX; Gordon Nealy of Oregon City, OR; and Jane Nealy, of Carthage, MO; two brothers, Benny Buschman and wife Leola of Stinnett, TX; George Buschman of Canadian, TX; sixteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

William Jesmond “Jake” Vinson

SPEARMAN — William Jesmond “Jake” Vinson, 90, died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011.

Graveside services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Hansford Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Medley officiating. Arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Jake was born Dec. 29, 1920, in Wake County, N.C. He married Thyra Mae Coats on April 16, 1945, in North Carolina.

Jake was a U.S. Marine. He loved fishing, his family and, for the last six years of his life, he ran his own cattle.

Survivors include his wife, Thyra Mae Coats Vinson; two daughters, Pamela Jane Schnell and husband Clay of Spearman and Tracey Leigh Smith and husband Ralph of Grand Junction, Colo.; a son, William Voris Vinson of Benson, N.C.; two brothers, Rex Vinson of Maryland and Leonard Vinson of Raleigh, N.C.; two sisters, Barbara Hays and Margaret Hicks, both of Cary, N.C.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity.

Joann “Jo” Hurley

GRAND FORKS, ND - Joann “Jo” Hurley, 86, of Grand Forks, passed away Wed, July 27 at Valley Eldercare in Grand Forks surrounded by friends and family.

Joann Frantz started life in North Manchester, Indiana, born Sept 5, 1924, to Paul and Marie Frantz. Her brothers Donald and Richard (Nancy) Frantz, and sister Nancy Nicholson survive her..

Joann received her nursing degree from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit during WW II. She married a Marine Pilot 1st Lt. Charles Hurley in 1946. They lived in Grand Forks, Marion, and Devils Lake ND, before settling for good in Grand Forks. Charles retired from teaching chemistry at GF Central in 1985 and suddenly passed away in 1986. Joann loved geriatric nursing and was the Director of Nursing at Valley Memorial Almonte for 26 years, retiring in 1989.

Retired didn’t mean inactive for Joann as she traveled the world, biking and exploring many countries and serving on many mission trips. Her lake cabin at Maple Lake served as the site for summer family gatherings, and her home on Belmont Road was where family holidays were celebrated.

Especially important to her was membership in Zion United Methodist Church where she was on many committees to serve her community and church and a member of Miriam Circle. She was a longtime season ticket holder and big fan of UND hockey. Her friends, scrabble and card groups, and PEO sisters meant a lot to her. Her radiant smile and endearing laugh was always with her. Jo was a friendly, cheerful, optimistic woman with a special way of making everyone feel welcome.

She is survived by the families of five sons. Michael, of Grand Forks, his 3 daughters, Vicki (Earnest) Washington, Ruby (Chris) Carter, and Donna (Matt) Mulock, son Marlyn and grandchildren Onyx, Charles, Veronica (deceased), Naomi, Kevin Lommen, Kirsten, Casey, and great grand children Brooklyn, Kailen, and Selena. Timothy, of Sioux Falls SD has two sons Kevin and Ryan and his special friend, Rachel McCracken. Patric (Linda) of East Grand Forks and sons Patrick (Terra), and Mark (Staci), and granddaughter Hazel. Charles, of Bloomington MN. John, (Roxanne), of Grand Forks.have daughters Katelyn (Josh) Salwey and Laura.

Other surviving relatives include brother in law, Lawrence (Helen) Hurley and sister in law, Ada Mcleod and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles, her very special friend, Norman Neumann, sister in law, Jody Frantz, brother in laws James Nicholson and Walter Mcleod and grandchild, Veronica Hurley.

A Celebration of Life service was held on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Zion United Methodist Church in Grand Forks, ND.

Sharon L. Bailey

SPEARMAN - Sharon l. Bailey, 60, died Thursday, July 28, 2011.

Funeral services were held on Monday, August 1, 2011 at 10 a.m. at the Spearman Church of Christ with Monty Joiner and Larry McCollum officiating. Cremation was by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Sharon was born in Amarillo on September 30, 1950. She had lived in the area for her entire life. She married Bruce D. Bailey on April 17, 1980 in Spearman.

Sharon was a member of the Westside Church of Christ. She worked for Gordon’s Drug as a sales clerk for 20 years.

Survivors include her husband, Bruce; a son and daughter-in-law, Pete and Jennie Mauk of Waxahachi, TX; three brothers, Darrell and Rhonda Tope of Tulsa, OK, Jerry and Linda Tope of Dove Creek, OK, and Jim Tope of Spearman; one sister, Karen & Keith Goodman of Follett; 4 grandchildren; 4 nieces; 2 nephews; and 8 grandnieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Avo Tope and a nephew, Ryan Tope.

The family requests memorials be to Hansford Hospice, 707 S. Roland, Spearman TX 79081.

Byron Lodge Groves

WAKA - Byron was born in Kansas City, MO on June 7, 1946. He was adopted by Marvin and Ellen Groves of Waka, TX when he was only a few weeks old. He grew up on a farm and went to school in Spearman, then to Ponca Military in Oklahoma. He attended college at Oklahoma State for Agriculture. He later drove a truck for 35 years before returning to farming full time.

He loved the farm and working in his shop making things for the farm and set up a car restoration shop to restore a 1938 Olds Businessman's Coup that had been in the family since it was new. He loved working in his shop with his wife, Loran, who enjoyed just being with him and helping him.

In the last year, Byron was confined to a wheelchair and needed help getting up and into bed. He had Myasthenia Gravis; Parkinson's and was a mild Diabetic. He had been in constant pain for a long time.

Byron was known in the community as a caring and loving giant of a man. He had wanted to find his biological mother for many years. Loran was able to find a nephew who was his mother's grandson. He called Byron on Monday, July 25th, and two days later, Byron held a picture of his mama in his hands and looked into the eyes of the woman who gave him life. His life long dream had finally come true.

Byron passed away at home in his sleep on Saturday, July 30, 2011. His wife was by his side as were his dear friends, Paul and Robin Bushman. Byron was laid to rest beside his parents at Hansford Cemetery on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 11 a.m., under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, who presided for his mother and father.

He's survived by his loving wife, Loran Groves; a grandson, Dakota Groves; a great-granddaughter, Autumn Sky Groves; and several cousins and a nephew.

"I love you, Byron. You were the only man I've loved and I'll keep up the farm and projects per your wishes. Be at peace in Heaven with your parents and loved ones. I'll miss you until the day they lay me t rest beside you and we see each other again in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ. Love, Loran"

Donald Max Piatt

PERRYTON - Donald Max Piatt, 79, died Tuesday, July 19, 2011.

No services are scheduled at this time. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Perryton.

Mr. Piatt was born Dec. 10, 1931, in Skellytown. He was a lifelong area resident. He married Georgia Lee Holtzclaw in Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on Jan. 21, 2005.

Don graduated from White Deer High School in 1950. He served in the Korean War as a staff sergeant in the advanced communications detachment.

Upon return from Korea, Don went to work for Santa Fe Railroad for 12 years, El Paso Natural Gas Co., and Texas Water Development Board in Alpine. Don worked for the North Plains Water District as a field engineer from 1970 to 1997, and was president of The Professional Agriculture Workers Association of Texas. He designed and implemented a water depletion program for the Internal Revenue Service.

While working at North Plains Water District, Don had a great love of the Colorado mountains, and photography, and was a very talented artist. He was a member of the North Plains Radio Control Association, where he was referred to as "Pappy."

He was preceded in death by his parents, Forest and Bessie Piatt; and his wife, Georgia Piatt. Survivors include two daughters, Tish Crouch and Leslie and husband Joe Paul, all of Perryton; a son, Jeff Piatt and wife Delinda Piatt of Dumas; and a brother, George Piatt of Paradise, Newfoundland; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Hollis Posey

AMARILLO - Hollis Posey, 43, of Amarillo, died Friday, July 22, 2011.

A memorial service was at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd with Mark Murray, pastor of Union Church in Spearman, Texas officiating.

Mr. Posey was born on September 30, 1967 in Amarillo, Texas to Sue and Gary Posey. He owned and opera...ted Quality Painting.

He is survived by his girlfriend, Angia King, of the home; his father, Gary Posey; one son, Driftin Roberts; two daughters, Journie Smith and Stormi Posey, all of Amarillo; five brothers, Bryan Posey of Magnolia, TX; Gary Posey; Andy Posey; Larry Posey and Jerry Posey; and two sisters, Robin Posey and Rhonda Posey, all of Amarillo.

Sam Bass

AMARILLO - Sam Bass, 78, of Amarillo, died Saturday, July 23, 2011.

Memorial services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First Christian Church in Dumas with Darrell Wait officiating. Private burial was in Dumas Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Mr. Bass was born Sept. 19, 1932, in Beaver County, Okla., to Bertha and Marion Bass. He graduated from Felt High School and joined the U.S. Army. After discharging from the Army, he married Betty Gove on Feb. 18, 1956, in Clayton, N.M. He moved to Dumas in 1957, and worked for Southwestern Public Service for 38 years until retiring.

Betty and Sam traveled the United States. He loved spending time with his family and grandkids. Sam loved the outdoors, fishing and camping. He enjoyed talking to people, nobody was a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Walter Bass.

He is survived by his wife, Betty of Amarillo; a daughter, Deborah Hammit and husband Gary of Fritch; a son, Jerry Bass and wife Marjorie of San Antonio; three grandsons, Wheeler Hammit and wife Heather of Spearman, Seth Hammit and wife Jacey of Spearman and Justin Bass of San Antonio; two great-grandchildren, Brayson Hammit and Brancey Hammit, both of Spearman; three brothers, Leroy Bass and wife Mary Jo of Felt, Okla., Dale Bass and wife Joann of Albuquerque, N.M., and Herb Bass of Farmington, N.M.; three sisters, Norma Vann of California, Gladys Ottinger of Boise City, Okla., and Doris Smith and husband Paul of Fayetteville, Arkansas.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to favorite charity.

Paula Fern “Rusty” Kizziar

GRUVER - Paula Fern “Rusty” Kizziar, 77, died on Monday, July 25, 2011.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at the Gruver United Methodist Church with Rev. Brad Reeves officiating. Interment will be in Gruver Cemetery under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Rusty was born on January 19, 1934 in Spearman, and was a lifelong resident of Hansford County.

She married Odis “Corky” Kizziar on November 17, 1949 in Clayton, NM.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Gruver where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was an awesome wife, mother, grandmother, friend and homemaker. Paula’s devout faith in Jesus Christ has provided her with a unique ability to guide her family and friends by sharing words of wisdom, prayers and her own life experiences. It is through her willingness to follow the Lord that hearts were touched and lives were changed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Tots Bennett; a brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Waynette Bennett; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Kizziar; and a granddaughter, Mikka Lamberson.

She is survived by her husband, Odis “Corky” Kizziar of Gruver; two sons, Bo and Carol Kizziar of Amarillo and Terry and Sandy Kizziar of Gruver; two daughters, Lana and Mike O’Hair of Channing and Carla Jones of Gruver; a sister, Merrilee Hughes of Midlothian; 10 grandchildren, Charlie and wife Shiloh, Anissa and husband Scott, Clay, Shannon and wife Andrea, Jocelyne, Dustin and wife Tisha, Cody and wife Jenny, Whitney, Monty, and Mason; 22 great-grandchildren, Michael, Erik, Chesney, Ashlee, Paige, Jacey, Hadley, Asa, Taylor, Corbin, Coty, Dawson, Zak, Justin, Colton, Hannity, Jada, Trey, Madison, Tyler, Logan and Layton; two nephews; one niece; and a special daughter and grandchildren Haydee Azarte, Jose and Diana, and Austin Moreno; and many other special family and friends.

The family requests memorials be to City Church of Amarillo, 205 N. Polk, Amarillo TX; Ochiltree Hospice Volunteers, 3101 Garrett, Perryton TX 79070; or United Methodist Church, 506 Broadway, Gruver TX 79040.
