Elizabeth Ellen Zimmer

STRATFORD - Elizabeth Ellen Zimmer, 82, of Stratford passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2011.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Stratford. Interment followed in Stratford Cemetery. Arrangements were by Morrison Funeral Directors.

Elizabeth Ellen Zimmer was born on May 14, 1928 in Dalhart, Texas to Nettie and Nick Brandt at her grandparents’ home, Jobe and Elizabeth Chennault. She attended Kelly Hill School. She worked in a diner, and a drug store. She later worked at a cleaners, where she became a designer and seamstress.

Elizabeth married Albert William Zimmer on August 15, 1946 at the First Baptist Church in Dalhart. She moved to Sherman County when she was 18 years old. Albert and Elizabeth lovingly made their home for 53 years at “Zimmerville”, southwest of Stratford.

Elizabeth was a wife, mother and helpmate. She raised chickens and sold eggs at Wayne Clements Feed Store in Dalhart. She raised a vegetable garden, yielding food for summer and winter after canning the produce. Her fried chicken, jellies, angel food cakes, brownies, and breads were enjoyed by her family and friends. Elizabeth designed and made clothes for Andrea, Bill and Bob as youngsters. Later, she fashioned clothing for other family members and friends.

Elizabeth was a member of the Lois Sunday School class, and First Baptist Church in Stratford, and helped with vacation bible school. She was a member of Iota Upsilon Preceptor chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, holding many offices as well as club sweetheart. She was also a member of Eastern Star, the Home Demonstration Club and Cowbelles.

Elizabeth helped in Boy Scouts, school band events, and all the school parties as her children were growing up. She was a 4-H clothing project leader, conducting sewing classes in Sherman County. She worked with the 4-H food concession stand during the livestock shows. She was recognized as “Friend of 4-H”. Elizabeth supported the Sherman County Library and Sherman County Museum. She took up oil painting and also piecing and designing quilts. Some special blankets had matching pillows that were given to family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Albert, on January 11, 2000.

Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Andrea Woolley and husband Gary of Spearman; two sons, Bill Zimmer of Stratford and Bob Zimmer of Gruver; six grandchildren, Shannon Norris of Sachse, Texas, Lezli Waits and husband Eric of Columbus, Mississippi, Matt Zimmer and wife Ashley of Amarillo, George Zimmer and wife Madison of Panhandle, Austin Zimmer of Lubbock, and Molly Zimmer of Baltimore, Maryland; three great-grandchildren, Emmie Waits, Magan Waits and Patrick Norris; three brothers, Reynold Brandt and wife Pat of Stow, Ohio, Robert Brandt of Amarillo, and Mack McCormack and wife Joy of Houston; and one godson, John Lavake of Stratford, Texas.

Elizabeth was an avid reader and a frequent visitor of the local library. The family suggests memorials be to the Sherman County Public Library, P. O. Box 46, Stratford, TX 79084, or to the First Baptist Church, 702 N. 3rd Street, Stratford, TX 79084.

The family will be at 717 Purnell in Stratford.

Nada M. Allison

CARBONDALE, KS - Nada M. Allison, 76, Carbondale, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at Brookside Manor, Overbrook, Kansas.

She was born January 19, 1935, at Shamrock, Texas, the daughter of Edward and Viola Harris Hutton. She grew up in Spearman, Texas, and graduated from Spearman High School. Mrs. Allison was camera operator for Jostens Printing and Publishing, Topeka, Kansas, and retired August 1, 2003, after 20 years of service.

She married Donald Lee Allison, November 4, 1952, at Clayton, New Mexico. He died December 27, 1998. She also was preceded in death by a son, James Richard Allison, who died in 1977, a brother James Hutton and a sister Norma Jean Mackie.

Survivors include a daughter, Janet (Dean) Michaels, DesMoines, WA; two sons, Gary (Dar) Allison, Black Canyon, AZ, and Donnie (Rebecca) Allison, Carbondale, KS; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2011, in Carbondale Cemetery, Carbondale, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to Brookside Activity Fund or Grace Hospice, and sent c/o the funeral home, P.O. Box 196, Burlingame, KS 66413.

Alva D. Garner

SPEARMAN - Alva D. Garner, 83, died on Saturday, April 23, 2011.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Spearman with Rev. Joe Shultz and Rev. Toni Bailey officiating. Interment will be at Hansford Cemetery, under the direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Alva was born in Cundiff, TX on May 10, 1927. She married Edward Garner on March 16, 1946 in Mineral Wells, TX. He preceded her in death in 1997.

Alva was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Hansford Hospital Auxiliary and United Methodist Women. She worked in many church and civic organizations over the years.

She is survived by two daughters, Pam of Melbourne, Australia, and Cathy of Amarillo; two granddaughters Diane of Austin, Emily of Dallas; a grandson, Robb and wife Cindy of Dallas; great-granddaughters Cassie & Katelyn; great-grandsons, Robbie II, Kyle and Jacob.

The family requests memorials be to: First United Methodist Church, Box 547, Spearman TX 79081.

Steven "Steve" William Thaten

CHILDRESS - Steven "Steve" William Thaten, age 60, died Tuesday, April 12, 2011 in Amarillo. Services were at 2 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2011 in Central Christian Church with Brother James Ikner officiating. Burial was in Childress Cemetery.

Steven "Steve" William Thaten was born to Harry and Nell Thaten in Childress, TX on December 9, 1950. Steve graduated with the class of 1969 from Childress High School. He married Donna Langley on June 16, 2001. He worked in law enforcement for almost 15 years, and worked in the family construction business prior to that. Steve was a long time Mason, and a proud member of the Childress Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Central Christian Church of Childress. Steve loved spending time with his family. They were very important to him.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Harry William Thaten and Nell Byars Thaten; and sister, Judy Thaten Walker.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Thaten of Wellington; a sister, Marsha Thaten Murphy and husband Larry of Spearman, a brother, James Pat Thaten of Childress; and a brother-in-law, David Walker of Lubbock; his parents-in-law, D.R. and Juanita Langley of Quail; brother-in-law Randy Langley and wife Susan of Wellington; 5 nieces; 4 nephews; 3 great nieces; and 4 great nephews.

Joe Manuel Arjona

PERRYTON - Joe Manuel Arjona, 47, died Saturday, April 16, 2011.

Services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2011 in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Ramsey, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Perryton.

Mr. Arjona was born Feb. 10, 1964, in Lockney and was a member of Community Worship Center. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, playing golf and being around his family and friends.

Survivors include his father, Ramiro Arjona of Misson; five sisters, Maria Martinez of Perryton, Mary Ellen Vitela of San Antonio, Irma Luna of Groom, Gloria Contreras of Borger and Diana Christy of Amarillo; a son, Erick Arjona of Michigan; and a daughter, Kristee Norris of Amarillo.

The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity.

Andrew Joseph Burleson

GRUVER — Andrew Joseph Burleson, 77, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011.

Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 16, 2011 in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Scott Curry officiating. Burial was in Gruver Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Andrew was born Dec. 23, 1933, in the Holt community in Hutchinson County. He married Patricia Faye Cluck on Sept. 6, 1958. She preceded him in death in 2007.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Gruver. He was a graduate of Spearman High School, and attended Wayland Baptist University, West Texas State University, and Baylor University.

At age 12, Andy batched on the Turkey track ranch and helped on the family farm. After a few years of college, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was a cryptographer at the Pentagon.

He then returned to Gruver to farm and ranch with his father-in-law, Sam Cluck. After 17 years in Gruver, Andy worked for his lifelong friend, J.A. Whittenburg III at First State Bank of Stratford and later in Amarillo as operations manager for Mr. Whittenburg.

In 1985, he began working for Amarillo Production Credit Association, becoming vice president until his retirement.

Upon retiring, he and his wife, Pat, moved back to the Sam Cluck home place near Gruver. He then enjoyed working part-time for Interstate Bank in Spearman.

After Pat’s death in 2007, Andy moved into Gruver, where he was a huge basketball fan, and also other sports from junior high and up.

The family wishes to thank the entire Gruver community for their love and support in the three years since the death of his beautiful and beloved wife, Pat. They greatly helped in his healing after her loss.

Andy’s family is especially grateful to Tomasa Perez for her care and friendship.

Andy gave his life to Jesus at an early age. As a young man he rededicated his life and was devoted to serve his Lord in any capacity. Through this ministry, Andy was given many opportunities to touch lives, all to God’s glory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Ella Burleson; a sister, Dannie Hunt; and two brothers-in-law, N.C. “Jeff” Jeffries and Del Cluck.

Survivors include three daughters, DeDe Cummins and husband Tim of Canyon, Marcy Tow and husband Scott of Garland, and Esther Gibson and husband James “Hoot” of Carrizo Springs; two sisters, Georgia Kern and husband Dennis of Amarillo and Mona Jeffries of Tyler; three sisters-in-law, Barbara Cluck of Gruver, Sammie Hurt and husband Mike of Amarillo, and Mary Lou Mathews and husband Steve of Spearman; two granddaughters, Jessica Cummins McKenzie (Joel) of Canyon and Hayley Tow of Garland; two grandsons, Hogan Tow of Garland and Andrew Cummins of Canyon; a great-granddaughter, Jaidalyn Faye McKenzie of Canyon; and a great-grandson, Jeremiah Elijah McKenzie of Canyon; and numerous nephews and nieces.

The family suggests memorials be to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 1890, Amarillo, TX, 79174-0001; or the Those Who Have Gone Before Us Fund at First Baptist Church of Gruver, P.O. Box 608, Gruver, TX 79040.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church parlor in Gruver.

Yvetta Lucille McCammond

LUBBOCK - Yvetta Lucille McCammond, 93, formerly of Spearman, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011, in Lubbock.

Graveside services were at 10 a.m. Monday, April 18, 2011 in Hansford County Cemetery in Spearman. Arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors of Spearman.

Mrs. McCammond was born Nov. 20, 1917, in Hansford County to Clarence and Meda Martin. She married Raymond McCammond in 1932. Yvetta lived most of her life in Hansford County.

Yvetta graduated from the State Board of Cosmetology School in 1947. She was a hairdresser and a homemaker.

She loved gardening, crocheting, reading the Bible and spending time with family and friends. She loved to write down details about her life and her loved ones in journals.

Yvetta was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a woman of strong faith and attended the Union Church in Spearman until moving to Lubbock in 2008 to be closer to her son.

Her greatest joys were raising her great-grandson as her own and watching her great-great-grandchildren play and grow.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond; two sons, Eugene McCammond and Donald McCammond; four brothers, Elvin Martin, Clifford Martin, Robert Martin and Leroy Martin; and a grandson, Ron McCammond.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Zachary McCammond and wife Kelli of Lubbock; her great-great-grandchildren, Jackson McCammond and Kendall McCammond, both of Lubbock; a granddaughter, Kim Flippin of Clarendon; a grandson, Max McCammond of Houston; a great-grandson, Shane McCammond and wife Lynde of Lubbock; and a great-great-grandson, Cole McCammond of Lubbock.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Legacy of Love Hospice, P.O. Box 1308, Littlefield, TX 79339.

Leota Florence Wheeler

SPEARMAN - Leota Florence Wheeler, 78, died Thursday, April 14, 2011.

Services were at 2 p.m. Monday, April 18, 2011 in Spearman Church of Christ with the Rev. Larry McCollum, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Mrs. Wheeler was born Oct. 5, 1932, in Cleora, OK, to Benjamin Thomas and Mary Hatti Imogene Osborne. She grew up in Vinita, OK.

She married Benjamin Douglas Wheeler Sr. on Sept. 15, 1949, in Vinita. In their early married life, they moved to Pampa, where she was a rancher's wife and homemaker. Later, the family moved to Spearman on the Flowers Ranch. Again, they moved to Colorado and Clayton, NM, where she worked with her husband on a ranch. She and her husband, Ben, retired after 65 years in Boise City, OK.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Mary Osborn; three brothers, Clyde Osborn, Tom Osborn and Richard Henson; and a sister, Louise Titvl.

Survivors include her husband, Benjamin Douglas Wheeler of Boise City, OK; a sister, Lorene White of Vinita; a brother, John L. and wife Flora Osborn of Edmond, OK; two sisters-in-law, Colene Wheeler of Higgins and Jerry Osborn of Tulsa, OK; her children, Ben Wheeler and wife Diane of Wewoka, OK, John Wheeler and wife Susan of Stratford, Patty Wheeler of Claude, Brenda Shieldknight of Spearman, and Steve Wheeler and wife Kathy of Springfield, Colo.; her grandchildren, Colby Wheeler and wife Sandi of Liberal, KS, Clay Wheeler of Lubbock, Jennifer Poling and husband Trent of Clayton, NM, Kelly Harper and husband Quentin of Gruver, Stephanie Moore of Claude, Wes Wheeler and wife Krista of Tahlequah, OK, Quenten Shieldknight and wife Kristin of Spearman, Ricky Armstrong and wife Randi of White Deer, Clara Simmons and husband Chris of Spearman, Kevin Wheeler of Scott City, KS, Mark Wheeler and wife Leah of Gladstone, NM, and Sara and Christine Wheeler, both of Springfield; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Cindy Barnes

SPEARMAN - Cindy Barnes, 55, died on Sunday, April 17, 2011.

Services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 22, 2011 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Spearman with Cecil Biggers officiating. Cremation will be by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Cindy was born in Valier, Montana on September 22, 1955. She married Raymond L. Barnes on March 21, 1983 in Spearman. He preceded her in death in 2007.

Cindy was a homemaker. She graduated from Belvidere High School in Belvidere, Montana in 1974.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her mother, Rosalie Rohrer; and her father, Howard Bowman.

Survivors include five brothers, Justin Bowman of Spearman, Bill Bowman, Daryl Bowman, Mike Rohrer and Brian Rohrer; two sisters, Amanda Bowman of Amarillo and Julie Ellis; special friends Joanne Baca and Raquel Arjona, both of Spearman; her stepmother, Debbie Bowman of Amarillo; and her stepfather Thomas Rohrer.

Fena Joyce Frost

Fena Joyce Frost, 73, died Friday, June 8, 2007.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the First United Methodist Church, Spearman, with the Rev. Ken Cole, St. Stephen Methodist Church, Amarillo, and the Rev. Neely Landrum, First United Methodist Church and John Scott officiating. Burial will be in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Funeral Home.

Joyce was born September 9, 1933, to Harry Samuel and Grace Viola Bruner in Shamrock, Texas. She graduated from McLean High School in 1953 and moved to Amarillo to work and play professional basketball for Bob Dowell and the 'Dowell's Dolls.' Joyce along with her mother operated Wade's Diner in Spearman for many years until Grace's retirement in 1975. Many people in Spearman still remember their wonderful cooking. Joyce also worked for many years in the produce department at Lowes Grocery Store always having a smile on her face and willingness to help anyone. Joyce loved to bowl and participated in several bowling leagues along with some of her good friends. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Spearman. Joyce will be remembered for her great cooking and her sweet spirit.

Joyce married Gordon Keetch on July 21, 1956 and later married Harold J. Frost on April 15, 1972. Harold died April 20, 2000. She is also preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Grace Bruner, a brother, Bob Bruner, a sister, Betty Stephens and an infant daughter, Rhonda Joyce.

Survivors include: son Robbin Keetch and wife Lisa of Perryton and one daughter Tracie Burcham and husband Joey of Sublette, Kansas, four grandchildren, Brittany Yeary and husband Tyler, Lubbock, Laci Keetch, Perryton, Robyn Burcham and Weston Burcham both of Sublette, Kansas, two great-grandchildren, Jayden Rodriguez and Wyatt Yeary, one sister, Helen Melton and husband, Richard Melton, Spearman, one brother W.A. Bruner and wife Faye, Abilene and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials be to Hansford Hospice, 707 Roland, Spearman, Texas, 79081.

Ralph Delano "Del" Cluck

SPEARMAN - Ralph Delano "Del" Cluck, 72, died Monday, June 4, 2007.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Gruver United Methodist Church with the Rev. George Price officiating. Burial will be in Gruver Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Del was born Dec. 7, 1934, in Dalhart to Sam and Faye Cluck. Del grew up in Gruver and graduated from Gruver High School in 1953. After attending Texas Tech, Del returned to Gruver where he was involved in farming and ranching until his death.

He married Barbara Bort on June 22, 1956, in Gruver. For the first seven years of their marriage they made their home 20 miles west of Gruver. In 1953, they and their two children moved into Gruver, residing at 608 Womble until they built their home at 202 Etling, where they have resided ever since.

Del and Barbara had the wonderful opportunity to travel extensively during their marriage, visiting such places as Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, Europe and the Holy Land. They also enjoyed many golfing trips and played bridge every Wednesday and Sunday night for 40 years with their good friends, Buddy and Frances Murrell.

Del was a member of Gruver United Methodist Church and the Wesley Sunday School Class. For many years he was a member of the Methodist Men's Quartet, singing at numerous venues across the Panhandle, including Ceta Canyon, with Rod Barkley, Carlie Knight and Buddy Murrell. Until his eyesight failed, he played the piano for Sunday church services and sang in the church choir. He served on the Gruver School Board from 1968 to 1974, serving as vice president from 1972 to 1974. For many years he served as president of Gruver Elevator Inc. and S&C Grain Co. Because he saw firsthand the blessing of the hospice program, he participated in the hospice training and served as a volunteer until his health began to fail.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Ralph and Beulah Bort; and a brother-in-law, Jim Jones.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 51 years, Barbara ; a daughter, Nanette Haines and husband Tom of Roswell, N.M.; a son, Brad Cluck and wife Mary of Amarillo; three granddaughters, Bennett and Maison Haines of Roswell and Maddie Cluck of Amarillo; a grandson, Samuel Cluck of Amarillo; three sisters, Pat Burleson and husband Andy of Gruver, Sammie Hurt and husband Mike of Amarillo and Mary Lou Mathews and husband Steve of Spearman; a sister-in-law, Peggy Jones of Hillsborough, Calif.; two aunts, Lou Cluck of Amarillo and Dorris Cluck of Spearman; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and "his" dog, Pooh Bear.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to United Methodist Church, 506 Broadway, Gruver, TX 79040; Hansford Hospice, 707 S. Roland, Spearman, TX 79081; or a favorite charity.

'Rocky' Ronald John Antalek

Ronald John "Rocky" Antalek

Ronald "Rocky" Antalek was born March 29, 1932, to Frank R. and Elizabeth Hranek Antalek. After a long illness he passed peacefully from this life on May 30, 2007. Family and friends are deeply grateful to the Hayesville (KS) Healthcare Center and Trinity Hospice personnel who cared for Rocky and his needs with devoted attention. Rocky was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Lackland AFB ('50-'51). He fell in love with Texas and after his discharge, remained in Texas, mainly Gruver. Other places he lived for a short time were Higgins, Pampa, Perryton, Bovina and Lubbock, returning only briefly to his place of birth, Endicott (NY) and to Buffalo (NY) where he grew into his teen years. In his later years, Rocky moved to Mobile (AL), his health deteriorated, so his son Terry moved him to Wichita (KS). He became a good mechanic and handyman, but Rocky's passion was music. He composed music and enjoyed playing the guitar and singing with friends. He touched many lives. Grandson, Micah preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons Ronnie Lee and wife Beverly of Spearman, Terry Lynn and wife Khrista of Wichita (KS), stepdaughters Brenda and husband Don Fielding of Plano (TX), and Tonya and husband Mike Yanke of Gruver (TX), and several grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers Robert and wife Mary Antalek of Bellevue, Ohio, Francis and wife Mary Jo Antalek of Toledo Ohio, sister, Mary Ann Geampa of Hamburg (NY), stepsister Gayle and husband Joseph Deskovich and stepbrother Gregory Antalek both of Lement (Ill). Several aunts and uncles, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews cherish his memory also along with the family of Todd and Ann Browning of Channing (TX) and many other friends.

There will be no formal services, as Rocky asked his remains be used for education.

The family request memorials be to a favorite charity.
