Mary "Charleen" Patterson Branum

DALHART - Mary "Charleen" Patterson Branum, 86, died Thursday, March 3, 2011.

Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2011 in Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel in Amarillo with the Rev. Barry Walker of First Christian Church in Dalhart officiating. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery by LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Coulter Road Chapel, 8310 S. Coulter St.

Mary was born March 30, 1924, in Armithwaite, Tenn., to Joe and Effie Patton. She moved with her family from Tennessee to Gruver before moving to the Dalhart area.

Mary loved being a rancher's wife. She enjoyed cooking for the harvest and branding crews and also helping with harvest. She loved to be with her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary loved to sew and crochet. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and First Christian Church of Dalhart.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Effie Amner Thompkins; her father, Joe S. Patton; her first husband, W.R. Patterson; a granddaughter, Marlo Patterson; her second husband, Doris Clifford Branum; a son, Joe Martin Patterson; five brothers; and seven sisters.

Survivors include a son, W.R. Patterson Jr. of Amarillo; a daughter, Pat Wilson of Dalhart; a sister, Bertha Johnson of Amarillo; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cloie Navorn Setliff Walker Stephens

Cloie Walker Stephens, 101, of Amarillo, died Friday, March 4, 2011.

Services were at noon Saturday, March 5, 2011 in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Graveside services were at 4 p.m. in Hansford Cemetery near Spearman. Arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Mrs. Stephens was born Nov. 24, 1909, in Chapel Hill, AR, to Minnie May and George Washington Setliff, the fourth of nine children. She married Marshall W. Walker on July 18, 1927, in Eldorado, OK. He died in Spearman on Oct. 8, 1976. She and Mr. Walker operated Walker's Upholstery there.

She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Spearman. She taught Sunday school and training union and participated in many Women's Missionary Union projects. She sang in the church choir.

She moved to Amarillo in 1978. She married Frank L. Stephens on March 15, 1986, in Amarillo. He died March 2, 2001.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Amarillo, singing in the Heritage Choir for several years.

She was a resident of Craig Methodist Retirement community for 13 years. The family wishes to thank the staff for their devoted care all these years. The family also would like to thank Bobbie and Katrisa of BSA Hospice for their care and support.

Survivors include two sons, Marshall L. Walker and wife Beth of Murfreesboro, TN, and James R. Walker and wife Patricia of San Antonio; two daughters, Angie Walker Barker and Lueise Walker Tyson and husband Milt of Amarillo; three grandsons, Nick Tyson of Amarillo, Matt Sheets of Owasso, OK, and Lee Walker of Marshall, NC; seven granddaughters, Cindy Tyson Brodie of Houston, Cathleen Tyson and Annette Sheets Cross of Amarillo, Nena Walker Egli of Murfreesboro, TN, Jimmie Lynn Walker of San Antonio, Bobbie Jo Walker Nelson of Atlanta and Megan Zumwald of San Antonio; two stepgranddaughters, Chris Creek of Amarillo and Beth Bagwell of Pampa; 17 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorris Babb of North Miami Beach, FL.

The family suggests memorials to the Craig Retirement Home Benevolent Fund.

Betty Y Baker

RAPID CITY — Betty Y Baker passed away Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at Rapid City Regional Hospice House.

She was born Betty Olive Yale on May 20, 1923, in Pierre to Willard and Minnie Yale. She grew up in Pierre and graduated from Pierre High School in 1940. She married Kenneth “Toy” Baker on June 29, 1940 and promptly dropped the “Olive” from her name. Toy worked as a farmer during the first years of their marriage in Canning, Onida, Blunt and Wessington. They had six children. The family moved to Pierre in November 1958 and Betty began working for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1959 as a telephone operator. In June of 1975, Betty was transferred to Rapid City, where she continued working as a telephone operator until she retired from AT&T in 1986.

Betty spent her retirement years at home with Toy in Rapid City where she loved the many visits from her family. Betty loved to talk and you could always find her hanging over the fence in her yard visiting with her neighbors. Her door was always open to anyone who had some news or just wanted to sit and talk over a cup of coffee. She also enjoyed gardening. Her yard was always beautiful and she loved to watch the rabbits, birds and squirrels that would wander in. She also enjoyed baking, reading and watching her daily soap operas. She delighted in her many children and grandchildren and loved them all dearly. Granny will be greatly missed.

Betty is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Jason Davis, who cared for her in the last years of her life. Her granddaughters, Lacey Davis and Audra Baker, also helped care for Betty, as well as many other friends and relatives. This allowed her to remain at home after she could no longer care for herself and Toy independently.

The family would like to give special thanks to the Meals on Wheels volunteers for all their help and concern over the years.

Betty is also survived by her husband Toy and a sister, Hazel Swanson, both of Rapid City; four more children, Julie Jacobsen of Gillette, Wyo., Dick Baker of Onida, Iowa, Jim Baker of Spearman, Texas, and Bonnie Redden, Rapid City; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and her dog Sammy.

Betty was preceded in death by her son, Kenny Baker; her parents; three sisters; her son-in-law, Dick Jacobsen; her daughter-in-law, Joan Baker; her daughter-in-law, Beth Baker; and many beloved sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

According to her wishes, Betty has been cremated and her ashes will be laid to rest next to her son Kenny at Riverside Cemetery in Pierre. There will be a graveside service on May 20, 2011, which would have been her 88th birthday.

Rodney Earl Harmond

WACO - Rodney Earl Harmond, 92, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011.

Memorial services will be at a later date. Arrangements are by Grace Gardens Funeral Home of Waco.

Rodney was born May 10, 1918, in Ochiltree County to Robert Earl and Mary Josephine Stump Harmond. He went to Spearman High School, then on to Panhandle A&M for two years.

Rodney married N. Grace Sheets on Christmas Day 1939 in Spearman. They celebrated 64 years of marriage prior to her death in 2004. The day after his wedding, he went to work for Phillips Petroleum Co. in Borger.

Rodney worked 35 years for Phillips in the maintenance department, where he ultimately held the position of superintendent of maintenance.

Rodney enjoyed traveling and had the opportunity to live and work for Phillips in numerous locations including Mexico City, Sweeny, Stavanger, Norway and Teesside, England.

During his tenure in Norway, he and his family visited many European countries: England, Denmark, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands and Scotland, as well as the Canary Islands near Africa.

Rodney's final years were spent in Meridian, living near his son and daughter-in-law.

Mr. Harmond lived a well-rounded life. He enjoyed working outside on equipment and tending cattle and chickens, and was an avid hunter and conservationist.

Although not physically able to perform much of the actual work on his son's sheep ranch, he was always thinking and inventing ways to improve the ranch.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Sylvia Marie Harmond Fleenor and Garnett Harmond Bailey; a brother, Joseph Marlin Harmond; his wife, N. Grace Sheets Harmond; and a daughter, Dorothy Jo Harmond Chambers.

Survivors include a sister, Bonita Harmond Ohlsen; a son, Ronald Earl Harmond and Mary Jane McLaren; a daughter, Zola Marie Harmond Lander and John; a son-in-law, Douglas Chambers; seven grandchildren, Richard Earl Harmond and Cassandra Heath, Gary D. Harmond and Cynthia Kirven, Rhonda Harmond, Don Philip Chambers and Kate; Darla Chambers Caldwell and Darrell, Eric Lander and Bethany Lander; and nine great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Dorothy Jo Harmond Chambers Scholarship Fund, in care of Amarillo College Foundation, P.O. Box 447, Amarillo, TX 79178.

James "Jim" Hudson

FRITCH - James "Jim" Hudson, 86, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, in Amarillo.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Westlawn Memorial Park with Richard Kasko, minister of Fritch Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in The Garden of Serenity in Westlawn Memorial Park by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Fritch.

Mr. Hudson was born July 26, 1924, in Perico, and had lived in Fritch for 37 years. He was in law enforcement in Amarillo, Borger, Spearman and Fritch and retired in 1991 as the chief of police in Fritch.

Survivors include his wife Judith Hudson; three sons, James Hudson of Rockwell, Don Cole of Fritch and Jim Cole of Lubbock; a sister, Bobbie Martin of Big Springs; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Annie Louise Glover

AMARILLO - Annie Louise Glover 98, died Sunday, February 20, 2011 in Amarillo, Texas.

Graveside services were at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, February 22, 2011, at Fairview Cemetery with Mark Lance, pastor of Mary Ellen and Harvester Church of Christ, officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.

Mrs. Glover was born December 2, 1912 in Archer City.

Annie married Marson Luther Glover on April 20, 1935 in Spearman and he preceded her in death on December 24, 1959. Annie has been a resident of Pampa for 40 years. She was a buyer for Sandra Company for 18 years and she worked for Walmart for 8 years. Annie was a member of the Mary Ellen and Harvester Church of Christ and she also was proud to say she had been a member of the Church of Christ since the age of 14.

Survivors include 1 grandson: Doug Glover and wife Annie Heng of Santa Monica, California; 1 great grandson: Lucas Glover of Santa Monica, California; 2 special nieces: Connie Ward of Belmont, California and Rue Anne Santos of Las Vegas, Nevada. Annie was preceded in death by a son: Bobby Wayne Glover on January 20, 1997; 3 sisters: Jewel Parnell, Lena Schumacher and Nell Daigle; 1 brother Rueben Deering.

The family suggest memorials be to Mary Ellen and Harvester Church of Christ, 1342 Mary Ellen, Pampa TX 79065.

Arnold Jones

WAKA - Arnold Jones, 66, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2011.

Services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Community Worship Center with Terry Danley officiating and the Rev. Tim Ramsey assisting. Graveside services were at 3:30 p.m. in Laverne Cemetery in Laverne, OK. Arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Perryton.

Mr. Jones was born May 16, 1944, in Texline. He married Vallerie Jones on June 18, 1966.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Wayne Jones of Balko, OK; a daughter, Michelle Holt of Canadian; a brother, John Richard Adamson of Perryton; a sister, Donna Coates of Waka; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to American Cancer Society, 3915 S. Bell St., Amarillo, TX 79109; or American Heart Association, 2514 82nd St., Suite B, Lubbock, TX 79423.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Marshall Edward Hibbs, Sr.

SPEARMAN - Marshall Edward Hibbs, 86, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 21, 2011 in Spearman, Texas. Ed was born on December 8, 1924 in Beaver, Oklahoma to Ralph Fairbanks Hibbs and Alice Opal Day Hibbs.

Ed married Edna Mae Caldwell on February 18, 1943 in Woodward, Ok. Shortly after their marriage, Ed was enlisted in the United States Army in WWII where he proudly served his country. In December of 1955, Ed and Edna Mae moved to Enid, Ok. And in 1966 they established the Hibbs Western Store which they owned and operated for 24 years. Edna Mae passed away in 1990.

Ed married Vernetta Lesly on May 28, 1991, in Canadian, Texas. Ed and Vernetta enjoyed traveling and spending time with one another, their children and grandchildren. Ed was a member of the Church of Christ and was baptized on November 21, 1993. Ed was a sports fanatic and absolutely adored his Oklahoma Sooners and Dallas Cowboys. Vernetta passed away in 2010.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Edna Mae, his second wife, Vernetta, and a great grandson, Jonathan Brungardt.

Survivors include his two sons, Edward Hibbs, Jr and wife Lynne of Enid, OK and Richard Hibbs and wife Cathy of Edmond, OK; two step daughters, Hazel Scott and husband, John of Spearman, TX, and Linda Thrasher and husband Kennith of Canadian, TX; a sister, Louise Bartel of Washington, MO; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and a niece; a nephew; and a great niece.

Graveside services will be at 1:00 pm on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at the Enid Cemetery. John Scott will officiate.

C. David Long

GUYMON, OK – C. David Long, 89, lifelong Guymon rancher and businessman, passed away Friday morning, February 11, 2011.

The son of Elizabeth (Davis) and Homer W. Long, he was born June 6, 1921 in Caldwell, Kansas. The Long family moved to Guymon in 1923. David attended and graduated from Guymon schools and then attended Oklahoma A&M (OSU) and the Oklahoma Military Academy and in 1941 was appointed to the Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, David enlisted in the United States Marines, serving in the Pacific Theater and was awarded the Purple Heart. Following the War, he completed his education at the University of Colorado. David returned to Guymon and joined his family in the Long Insurance Agency. He was united in marriage to Mary Alexander Hart on March 1, 1948 in Santa Fe, NM.

The Longs were blessed with four children and David was able to be active in the insurance business while enjoying ranching and other business interests. He was a member of Victory Memorial United Methodist Church, Guymon Lodge #335 AF&AM and the Panhandle Shrine Club. He was honored as Pioneer Day Marshall in 2009.

The Long family would like to extend a special gratitude to Dr. Kelly McMurry and staff, home health nurses, caregivers, and the Guymon Fire Department for all their special care and support.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mary Long; daughter, Mary Melissa (Lisa) and husband, Douglas Gordon of Rancho Santa Fe, CA; sons, D. Patrick Long and wife, Shawn of Dallas, TX; Stephen K. Long of Guymon; seven grandchildren, Alissa Gordon, Adam Gordon, David Long, Patrick Long, Sally Long, Jake Long, Lindsey and husband, K.W. Cryer and a great-granddaughter, Campbell Elizabeth Cryer. He is also survived by a sister, Jennie Lou McKinnon of Guymon; and two brothers-in-law, Norman Wilmeth, Guymon, and Buddy Murrell, Gruver, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Homer Phillip Long; three sisters, Vera Lile, Helen Elrod and Donna Wilmeth, and daughter-in-law, Debbie Long.

Funeral services were Monday morning, February 14, 2010, 10:00 AM at Victory Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Michael Burkett, pastor, officiating. Military rites followed in Elmhurst Cemetery under the direction of Henson-Novak Funeral Directors of Guymon.

Memorials may be given to the Panhandle Shrine Club, Victory Memorial United Methodist Church or charity of choice, c/o Henson-Novak Funeral Directors, P.O. Box 1306, Guymon, OK 73942.

William “Bill” Pool

ALAMEDA, Saskatchewan — William “Bill” Pool, 55, formerly of Dumas, Texas, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011, in Regina.

Memorial services were at 11 a.m. Saturday in Grace Church, 4111 Plains Blvd., in Amarillo, Texas, with Doug Gehm officiating. Burial was in Alameda. Arrangements were by Hall Funeral Services of Estevan.

Bill was preceded in death by his father, J.C. Pool; two brothers, John and Tom Pool; his grandparents, Ernie and Thelma Kinder, and John Pool and Bessie Smart; and an uncle, Doug Beck.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; his children, Janine of Lloydminster, Danny and Leah, both of Alameda, Tobi and husband Jason Johnstone of Weyburn, and David Pool of Alida; his mother, Joyce Pool of Amarillo; five grandchildren, Brittany and Dylan Nielsen, and Paige, Brooklynn and Brayden Pool; two siblings, Mike Pool and wife Karen of Pittsboro, N.C., and Patty Akins and husband Bob of Amarillo; two uncles, Bill Pool and wife Beverly of Morse, Texas, and Kenneth Pool and wife Janice of Frederick, Okla.; two aunts, Louise Creekmore of Oklahoma City and Betty Beck of Dumas; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jim and Olive Hannah and their families; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jeaun Cotter Crail

Jeaun Cotter Crail, 73, of Amarillo died Friday, Feb. 4, 2011.

Memorial services were at 11 a.m. Friday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Jeaun was born Feb. 20, 1937, at the family ranch near Spearman to Austin "Tex" Cotter and Izene Lois Cotter. She was raised and educated in several area Panhandle towns.

She married Kenneth Dale Allen of Panhandle on Nov. 28, 1951, in Santa Rosa, N.M. They had two sons, Kenneth Dale Allen Jr. and Stewart Dulane Allen.

She later married Richard E. Crail on Aug. 16, 1982, in Clovis, N.M. She was self-employed for many years and also was a homemaker. She greatly enjoyed golfing with her husband, Richard, and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Stewart Allen.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Crail of Amarillo; a son, Ken Allen and wife Brenda of Amarillo; a stepdaughter, Lori Anderson and husband Allen of Minden, Nev.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Jackie Lee King

AMARILLO - Jackie Lee King of Amarillo died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011, at the age of 80.

Celebration of Life Services were held Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount in Amarillo. Todd Blackhurst, Associate Pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, officiated. A private family burial preceded the services.

Jackie was born Dec. 31, 1930, in Spearman. She was the second of three daughters born to Lee and Willie Garrett Stevenson. She was raised in the Texas Panhandle and Brawley, Calif., and was a proud 1949 graduate of Stinnett High School in Stinnett.

Jackie married her high school sweetheart, Dennis “Max” King on April 29, 1951. In their 43-year marriage, they proudly raised four children, Carol, Michael, Casey and Kristy.

Jackie and Max enjoyed spending time at their cabin in Angel Fire, N.M., traveling, spending time with friends, and above all their children and grandchildren. Max preceded Jackie in death on May 30, 1994.

Jackie fondly worked as secretary of Inspections and Registry at the American Quarter Horse Association for many years. A Christian woman, she was blessed with a true servant’s heart and continually reached out to her family, friends, and the communities of Amarillo and Pampa in practical and tangible ways. She served in leadership positions in the PTA and Scouting.

She quietly compiled thousands of hours in volunteer service at Pampa Regional Medical Center in Pampa, where she developed the Junior Volunteer program and served as Auxiliary President. Jackie faithfully served St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Pampa in the Altar guild and as a valuable asset to their women’s programs.

Later in her life, she enjoyed working with her brother-in-law at Cooley Aircraft Service. Jackie enjoyed small group Bible studies, delivering Meals on Wheels, bridge, and time spent with her beloved family. Jackie’s boundless generosity, West Texas wit and kitchen table wisdom sustained her family and friends through good times and bad.

Jackie was blessed with 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren who affectionately knew her by a host of names, Monnie, Jackie, Grandma, MeMe and Great-Grandmonnie.

Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Willie Stevenson; sister, Mary Lee England; and her husband, Max.

She is survived by her sister, June Stevenson Cooley and husband Oren, sister-in-laws Ann King and Shirlee Heard; by her children, Carol King Thomas and husband Jack of Amarillo, Michael King and fiancee Debby Pope of Pueblo, Colo., Casey King and wife Tracie of Amarillo, Kristy King Novinski and husband David of Irving; by her grandchildren Katie Thomas Joy and husband Kyle, Jack Thomas and wife Vanessa, Christopher King, Celeste King, Abby King, Garrett Max King, William Novinski, Peter Novinski, James Novinski, and Josef Novinski; and by her great grandchildren Dawson Timmons and Avery Joy.

The family would like to express our profound gratitude to Mother’s Hospice nurse, Wendy Fruscella and the family of Ware Living Center who cared for our mother in such a loving tender manner.

The family requests that memorial gifts be forwarded to the American Quarter Horse Foundation 2601 E. Interstate 40, Amarillo, TX 79104, earmarked for their Youth Scholarship fund.
