John C. Robinson

GRUVER - John C. Robinson, 93, died Wednesday, March 10, 2010.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. George Price and the Rev. Brad Reeves officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

John was born Dec. 15, 1916, in Gem City to Elbert C. and Rosa Ann Robinson. He married Mary Jo Avent on June 14, 1940, in Clovis, N.M.

John and Mary Jo lived in Canyon in 1940, where he farmed with his brother and father in Happy. They moved to Panhandle in 1953 as he continued his farming career.

John and Mary Jo moved to Gruver in 1961, where he farmed until 2003. He was a Mason for more than 50 years.

The family truly appreciated the help and support of Hansford Hospice.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert C. and Rose Ann Robinson; a son, Johnny Robinson; a brother; and four sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jo Robinson; two daughters, Peggy Robinson of Gruver and Mary Ann Gill and husband Paul of Fairfax Station, Va.; a son, Joe C. Robinson and wife Kay of Gruver; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to Hansford Hospice, 707 S. Roland St., Spearman, TX 79070; or Gruver United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 977, Gruver, TX 79040.

Buster W. Kirk

SPEARMAN - Buster W. Kirk, 95, passed away peacefully in his sleep, March 2, 2010.

Memorial service will be March 13, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church, 200 North McGee, Borger, TX at 2 p.m.

Buster was born April 25, 1914, in Northern Hutchinson County to Dib and Minnie Kirk. He was the 8th of 9 children, and as he liked to put it; 'I had 5 brothers, and we each had 3 sisters.'

Buster was a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a great grandfather. He cherished his family's roots as pioneers in Hutchinson County; his service in World War II; becoming a farmer/rancher after the war; serving as a director in Panhandle Bank and Trust; serving as president of Kirk Properties Incorporated; his 39 years service to North Plains Ground Water District; and serving on many other county and State agriculture committees. He was a past Master Mason with over 50 years service.

Buster was educated in Lackey, Spearman High School, and Texas Tech receiving an education in Mechanical Engineering, which proved to be very valuable during nearly four years in the Army Air Force in the South West Pacific Theatre of World War II.

Buster met Dorene Davis before the war and they were married 7 years later on Feb 21, 1948. Pamela Kirk was born Feb 19,1949, and Randy Kirk on Sept 19, 1950.

Buster and Dorene lived in Borger, TX and became members of Angel Fire Resort in 1974. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Borger, a past member of First United Methodist Church of Spearman, and a charter member of the United Church of Angel Fire.

He is survived by: Dorene of Amarillo; Pamela and Richard Moore of Angel Fire; Randy and Teresa of Spearman; Tom Kirk, his wife Anna Leigh and their son Marshall of Dallas; Dib Kirk of Amarillo; and sister Dorris Faver of Lubbock.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to: Child Evangelism Fellowship of West Texas, 818 W. 9th Ave., Amarillo, TX 79101; Holt Cemetery, 10239 FM 281, Spearman, TX 79081.

There will be a time of fellowship after the Memorial Service in the Garden Room of the FUMC, Borger.

Jackie Thoreson Bell

LUBBOCK - Jackie Thoreson Bell, 74, of Lubbock died Thursday, March 4, 2010.

Graveside services were at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Resthaven Memorial Park of Lubbock. Arrangements were by Agape Funeral Chapel.

Mrs. Thoreson was born May 10, 1935, in Hansford County near Gruver. She was the daughter of Arnold and Grace Thoreson. She graduated from Gruver High School in 1953 and attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and then transferred to Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

She married Wynn Hamilton, and they resided in Pecos, Texas. Jackie relocated to California where she pursued a modeling career before settling back in Lubbock. While in Lubbock she owned the Polk-A-Dot boutique and was married to her loving husband, Jim Bell.

Jackie had a great love for animals, especially her baby Gucci, who preceded her in death. She also had a passion for fast cars and world travel. She assisted those in need by donating time at the local Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels charities.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Bell, in June of 1999, her father and mother Arnold and Grace, brothers Arthur, RB and Billy, sister Frances Glasgow, and sister-in-law Nell.

She is survived by her sister, Jeanette Niles of Amarillo; brother, Donnie Thoreson of Gruver; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to be to the Salvation Army or Meals on Wheels of Lubbock.

Floydean Shook

GRUVER - Floydean Shook, 77, formerly of Gruver, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010, in Amarillo.

Services were at 10 a.m. Friday, March 5, 2010 in First Baptist Church of Gruver with the Rev. Scott Curry officiating. Burial was in Gruver Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Floydean was born May 1, 1932, in Gruver to Ed and Winnie Vernon. She married Wayne Shook on Dec. 25, 1949. After 54 years of marriage, he preceded her in death in 2004.

Floydean was an artist and a teacher of art. Her students were 5 years of age to 99 in a retirement home. Art was her passion.

Her purpose in life was to be a caregiver to everyone. No one was sick or hungry around her who did not get doctored or fed.

Her 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren were all the light of her life.

She also was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Winnie Vernon.

Survivors include a daughter, Rhonda Stafford and husband Vernon of Dumas; two sons, Eddy Shook and wife Mary of Sunray and Rex Shook and wife Nena of Dumas; two sisters, Winnell Shaw and Doug Shaw and Judy Fletcher and husband Bob, all of Amarillo; three brothers, Billy Ed Vernon and Pete Vernon, both of Brownwood, and Roger Vernon and wife Nancy of Tomball; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

The family suggests memorials be to Memorial Hospice, 224 E. Second St., Dumas, TX 79029.

Jesse Long

BALKO, OK - Jesse Long, 95, died Friday, March 5, 2010, in Perryton, Texas.

Memorial services were at 1 p.m. Monday, March 8, 2010 in Good Samaritan Funeral Service in Booker, Texas, with the Rev. Mark A. Farr of Balko Baptist Church officiating.

Mr. Long was born Feb. 23, 1915, in Cadet, Mo., to Walter and Fannie Joplin Long. He owned and operated numerous area skating rinks, including Guymon, Perryton and Spearman and also held a real estate license.

Survivors include a son, Jerry Long; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to Balko Education Foundation in care of Good Samaritan Funeral Service, P.O. Box 341, Booker, TX 79005.

Vi Hornsby

SPEARMAN - Vi Hornsby, age 81, died Tuesday March 9, 2010.

No services are planned at this time. Cremation will be by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Vi was born on March 30, 1928 in Young County to Carl and Pearl Tucker. She married L.J. Hornsby on February 15, 1947 in Spearman. He preceded her in death in 1985.

Vi was a member of the Spearman Church of Christ and was a nurses aide.

She is survived by two sons, Cliff Hornsby of Pampa and Larry Hornsby of Spearman; one brother, Bob Tucker of Spearman; one sister, Sue Sloan of Amarillo; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a daughter, Mary.

The family request memorials be to Hansford Hospice, 707 Roland, Spearman TX 79081.

Ray McCubbin

SPEARMAN - Ray McCubbin, 53, died Monday, March 1, 2010.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 2010 in Union Church with the Rev. Don Baltazar and Mark Murray officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Ray was born Oct. 8, 1956, in Mendota, Calif. He married Donna Heddins on Nov. 15, 1985.

He was a truck driver. He was a member of Union Church and Spearman Christian Motorcycle Association. He loved motorcycles, fishing and singing in the church choir.

Survivors include his wife, Donna McCubbin; eight children, Wayne McCubbin and wife Michelle, Lindsay McCubbin, Mariah Sheppard, Astyn Kennedy, Khairi Kennedy, Kimmi Rivera and Ramon Rivera, all of Spearman, and Aldonna Vanzant of Hanford, CA; three grandchildren, Kady McCubbin and Kyra Castillo, both of Spearman, and Kayla Vanzant of Hanford; two brothers, Danny McCubbin and wife Monica of Alabama and Rex McCubbin and wife Deb of Tennessee; and a sister, Debbie McCubbin of Lawton, OK.

The family suggests memorials be to Christian Motorcycle Association, PO Box 724, Spearman TX 79081; or Teen Challenge, P.O. Box 20610, Albuquerque NM 87154.

Pauline Rebecca Bell

FOLLETT - Pauline Rebecca Bell, 97, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, in Booker.

Services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2010 in United Methodist Church in Follett with Dan Carter officiating. Burial was in Fairmont Cemetery by Scotty Schilling Funeral Director of Follett.

Mrs. Bell was born June 5, 1912, in Kansas City, Kan., to Frank and Antonio Raczek Klinger. She married Emery L. Bell on March 1, 1932, in Spearman.

Survivors include a son, Vernor Bell of Follett; two daughters, Barbra Brown of Morrison, Okla., and Karen "Kack" Pearcy of Follett; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to United Methodist Church, 400 E. Ivanhoe Ave., Follett, TX 79034; or a favorite charity.

Orville Ernest 'Ernie' Williams

Memorial services for Orville Ernest 'Ernie' Williams, were at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 27, 2010, at First Christian Church, with Dr. Michael Passmore officiating and Rev. Kim Clowe assisting. Arrangements were under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.

Orville Ernest (Ernie) Williams was survived by his second wife, Madlyn (Lyn) Carol Williams of Lubbock; and his sister, Lolita Bohn and her husband, Robert Bohn of Indianapolis, Ind.

He is also survived by four children, sons, Jeffrey Michael Williams of Nacogdoches, Texas, David Ernest Williams of Seabeck, Wash., William Frederick Dean; and daughter, Jo Leigh Zuehike as well as her husband, David Zuehike of Lubbock. Proudly marrying both David and Jeffrey, Ernie is survived by daughter-in-law, Lisa Jaye Williams of Seabeck, Wash., and Rhonda (Robin) Kaye Williams of Nacogdoches, Texas. Ernie is also survived by grandson, B. J. Tapley of Lubbock, grandson, Kyle David Williams of Portland, Ore., grandson, Kane Christopher Williams of Seabeck, Wash.; granddaughter, Erin Melissa Luper of Crowley, Texas, granddaughter, Emily Carolyn Williams of Nacogdoches, Texas; and three great-granddaughters, Hope, Rebecca and Brooke Luper of Crowley, Texas.

Ernie was ordained into the ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at Third Christian Church in Indianapolis, Ind., in June of 1956. After serving as Director of Indian Lake Christian Camp in Indianapolis, Ind., he accepted the position of Associate Minister of Education for the Florida Region of the Christian Church. He continued his ministerial service at First Christian Church in Tulsa, Okla., and at University Place Christian Church in Enid, Okla., before moving to Texas in 1966. Ernie continued his ministerial service at Bellaire Christian Church and Gulf Gate Christian Church in Houston, Texas, before serving the First Christian Church of Lufkin, Texas, the First Christian Church of Bay City, Texas, and the Saint John's United Church of Christ of Rosenberg, Texas. In 1984, Ernie accepted the call to the First Christian Church of Coleman, Texas. Moving to North Amarillo Christian Church in 1989, Ernie continued his ministerial service until retirement in 1994.

During retirement, Ernie continued his Christian educational calling by serving as Executive Director of Ceta Glen Christian Conference Center and Lake Brownwood Christian Retreat before serving as Interim Minister for churches in Spearman, Tulia, Quanah, Childress, Borger, Lubbockview and Community Christian Church in Lubbock, as well as churches in Big Spring, Plainview, Brady and Mason.

As an avocational Biblical Archaeologist, Ernie was on the Board of Directors for the Joint Archaeological Expedition to Tel-El-Hesi, Israel from 1975 till 1983. Ernie was a volunteer organizer for Crop Walk of West Texas and Moderator for the High Plains Region of the Disciples of Christ Church. Ernie served as Moderator of the Texas Church World Service and participated in service missions to Lesotho, Honduras, Nicaragua and Mexico before focusing his mission work in the lower Texas Rio Grande Valley. During his time as Moderator and Board Member of the Southwest Good Samaritan Ministries in Los Fresnos, Texas, Ernie helped develop the organizational structure for serving the poorest of the poor of the Rio Grand Valley.

Elizabeth Martinez

SPEARMAN - Elizabeth Martinez, 67, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010.

Services were at 2 p.m. Monday in Primera Iglesia Bautista with the Rev. Lucio Moreno officiating. Burial was in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Mrs. Martinez was born Nov. 6, 1942, in Brownsville. She married Isabel Martinez on July 2, 1960, in Mathis. She was a member of Primera Iglesia Bautista.

Survivors include her husband, Isabel Martinez; a daughter, Juanita Gonzales of Alvord; a son, Florencio Martinez of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Magdalena DeLeon of Mathis and Rebecca Vallego of San Antonio; a brother, Santiago Vallego Jr.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to American Diabetes association, 8008 Slide Road, Suite 1A, Lubbock, TX 79424.

Sibyl Jones

OLTON - Sibyl Jones, 86, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010.

Services were at 10 a.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church in Olton with Patrick Hamilton officiating. Burial was in Olton Cemetery by Ramage Funeral Directors.

Mrs. Jones was born March 16, 1923, in Cranfills Gap to Emil and Beulah Smith Sorley. She married Owen Jones July 20, 1941, at Valley View Church.

Survivors include a son, George Jones of Paris, Texas; two daughters, Marilyn Carson of Dalhart and Valda Burkhalter of Spearman; two brothers, Grady Sorley of Bovina and Gene Sorley of Lubbock; a sister, Anita Powell of Somerville; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 408, Olton, TX 79064; or Runningwater Draw Care Center, P.O. Box 409, Olton, TX 79064.

Robert R. 'Bob' Hardy

SPEARMAN - Robert R. 'Bob' Hardy, 74, died on Monday, February 22, 2010.

Funeral services were held on Friday, February 26, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Spearman with Rev. Neely Landrum officiating. Interment was in Mountain View Cemetery near Elmwood, OK at 2:30 p.m. Arrangements were under the direction of Boxwell Funeral Home of Spearman.

Bob was born in Amarillo on January 6, 1936 to Raymond and Mildred Hardy.

Bob completed high school in Amarillo and went on to graduate from Texas A&M University. Bob's 27-year career in education included positions as football coach, counselor, special ed and drivers ed teacher. He was an avid Golfer and enjoyed sports of all kinds. As a young man, Bob was baptized in the Church of Christ and with faith believed we all would go to a better place.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Mildred Hardy of Amarillo, and a son, Gary Hardy of Dallas in 2000.

Survivors include his wife of 27-years, Claudine of Spearman; two daughters, Lynne Brock and Johnanna Dear, both of Perryton; two stepsons, Allen Gardiner and Chad Gardiner, both of Frisco; a stepdaughter, Stacia Hunzeker of McKinney; a sister, Judy Perales of Amarillo; 10 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorials be to the Hansford County Golf Course.
